Information by E-Mail/Website/App

Many parents have signed up to have newsletters and other information e-mailed to them, to ensure they receive them! If you don’t receive e-mails from the school, but would like to, please send a note of your e-mail address to [email protected]. In addition, from time to time, we will send out text messages to parents who have provided their mobile phone numbers. Should you NOT wish to receive texts from the school, please contact the school office to inform them of this. Our School website, which contains lots of information about the school and the curriculum, can be accessed using the following web address is http://www.muirhead.sayr.sch.uk/ Again this session we will be using our school app to keep parents updated with information. Uniforms

A big thank you to all parents for taking the time to ensure the children wear school uniform. All pupils look so smart and are a real credit to the school, themselves and of course, their parents. I have also reinforced with our older pupils to ensure that appropriate clothing is worn at all times. To ensure that we have positive role models for our younger pupils, we would ask that skirt lengths are appropriate. If there is occasion that your child comes to school without their uniform then we keep a supply and would ensure that your child is offered

the chance to change so that they don’t feel self-conscious. I would ask that ALL parents ensure their child’s name is on ALL articles of clothing – sweatshirts, jackets, blazers etc. We will hold all unclaimed items of uniform till the October Parent’s Night, and then if items remain unclaimed, we will send them off to one of the charity shops in the town. Please check your child has all their belongings. Primary 7 pupils look fantastic this session and are committed to being very good role models to our younger pupils. Their hooded jackets and black polo shirts (for P7 only) are very smart. We are also encouraging pupils to wear black school shoes and to bring football shoes to change in to. Your support here would be very much appreciated.

P.E. Kits

As a health promoting school, we place great importance in children accessing the gym for exercise, as well as trying to foster in them, an interest in different sports. I would ask that all parents ensure children have an appropriate gym kit available in school at all times: T-shirt or polo shirt, shorts and gym shoes/trainers. These can be kept in the classroom in a named bag. Class gym times are as follows: N Mon / Wed / Fri P1 Mon / Thu / Fri P4/5 Tue / Wed / Thu P2/3 Mon / Thu / Fri P6 Tue / Wed / Thu P3/4 Mon / Tue / Thu / Fri P7 Tue / Wed / Thu

Parent Council – Annual General Meeting

I am indebted to our Parent Council for the excellent work they do to support our school in so many ways. Their AGM will be on Wednesday 25th September at 5.30pm. All parents welcome. A letter will follow with details.

Café 5 Breakfast Club

Our breakfast club continues to run each morning, attended by children across the school. There are however, still places available for any interested pupils. Can I remind parents that our Breakfast Club opens at 8.15am each morning and we are unable to provide supervision prior to this time. The charge for our club is currently £1.50 per day. We will be reviewing this in the near future and will keep you undated.

If you are interested in our breakfast club then please contact the school office. Share-A-Lunch Our Share a lunch initiative was very successful last session and we are running it again across the year for all classes. We look forward to welcoming you with your child. The dates for the year are as follows: P2 Wednesday 18th September 2019 P3 Wednesday 9th October 2019 P4 Wednesday 6th November 2019 P5 Wednesday 15th January 2020 P6 Wednesday 19th February 2020 P7 Wednesday 18th March 2020 Food Allergies

Can I please ask parents not to send in snacks or items in packed lunches that contain nuts, as we have children who have nut allergies.

Homework Diaries/Homework Sheets

Homework diaries have been issued to all children. I would ask for your support in ensuring all set tasks are completed and returned to the class teacher on time. It would be helpful if parents could ensure they see their child’s diary on a regular basis. Please feel free to note any queries you may have in the diary. The Homework Policy and an information leaflet is available in the school should you wish another copy. Use of Car Park

Can I please remind ALL parents, childminders and carers that the car park is for staff use and disabled badge holders only. Please do not be offended if you are asked to leave the car park. Our Early Years Centre numbers have increased to 48 pupil so we need to ensure the safety of all. South Ayrshire Council will be providing signage in the near future. I would also ask parents NOT to walk through the car park with children. Instead, they should use the paths provided. Again, this is to keep our children safe! We have opened the gate at the bike shed for

nursery parents. Our Rights Respecting Pupil Council will help monitor the car park this session to keep everyone safe.

Pupil Absence

I would ask, if a child is going to be absent from school due to illness or any other reason, that the parents phone the school office by 9.00am indicating the reason for the absence. On return to school, this MUST be followed up with a written note to the class teacher explaining the reason for the absence. I would thank you for your co-operation with this. This also applies to children who attend our nursery class.

Water Bottles

We would encourage children to bring a water bottle to school each day. Children are encouraged to drink water during class time as they work, and can access the fountain to refill bottles. I would ask that children do not bring diluting juice or fizzy drinks – water only please. Would parents/carers please support us to be a health promoting school by ensuring that children have fresh water at the start of each day. This also supports us to comply with government requirements.

P1-4 Lunches and Milk Can I please remind parents that school lunches up to the value of £2.15 and milk are free for all our primary 1-4 pupils. We would encourage all primary 1-4 parents to take up this offer. School Improvement As you know, in Muirhead we are always striving to improve what we do. This year we are looking to achieve the following:

In line with SAC policy developing assessment , moderation and reporting

Developing skills in literacy and numeracy

Health and Wellbeing - Growth Mindset and Resilience

Outdoor learning across the year

Nurturing school

Family learning

Pupil voice and personal learning plans

We are also working very closely with schools across the authority to ‘Close the Attainment Gap’ in both literacy and numeracy. A full copy of the improvement plan is available for parents on the noticeboard. An information leaflet on our Improvement Journey will be with Parents Shortly.

Parents’ Nights – Open Invitation

Our October open Parents’ Night will be held in the school on Thursday 10th October between 3.45pm and 5.45pm and then between 6.30pm and 8.30pm on the one evening. No appointments will be issued for this evening, but you will still have the opportunity to speak to your child’s teacher, see the work your child is doing and to ask any questions you may have. The school also offers ‘OPEN HOURS’ for parents. These open hours give parents an opportunity to come up and speak to the class teacher if they wish to. If you have any concerns about your child’s learning, you should make contact with the school at any time, and not feel you have to wait to raise these at parent/teacher/OPEN HOUR meetings. Charities The main charities we will be supporting this year include:

National Charity – Children in Need/MacMillan Local Charity – Ayrshire Hospice Global Charity – UNICEF Help for Haiti – Ongoing Our pupils would like to support a range of charities and we thought we would have a one off charity day – date to be decided.

Early Level News

Early Years Centre

back everyone. We hope that you have all had a restful and enjoyable summer. We have settled well into our full day sessions and are enjoying sharing lunches together. Belongings This year children will have their picture above their peg so they can quickly identify where their jacket and other belongings are. We encourage children to be as independent as possible when putting on their jackets, changing their shoes for gym time or finding their wellies when they go outside. You can leave their gym shoes in a bag hanging on their peg and we ask that they have a pair of wellies available for daily access to the great outdoors. PLEASE remember to name all your child’s belongings. Snack/ Allergens

Our children are offered a healthy snack using the 'Setting the Table' guidelines. Snack is displayed on our notice board so you can discuss this with your child but also to refer to in case your child has an allergy to certain foods. A Parent/ Carer leaflet is available with advice if you are unsure. Please take one if you feel it is useful and let a staff member know immediately if your child develops an allergy to any food. We would be very grateful of a donation of £1.00 a week to help us cover the cost of snack. We would also be glad to receive kitchen roll and a box of hankies from

each family as these are items we quickly go through with spills and runny noses. Care Plans As your child/children are settling in we would like to get to know them a little more. Stay and Play sessions will be offered soon so you can come in and play with your child and some of the other children in the Nursery. At this time there will also be an opportunity for you to speak with their key worker and to agree targets we can work with you to help your child achieve. Please check the notice board as dates and times will be offered soon. Early Literacy/ Home link At Muirhead we wish to instil a love of language from an early age and we offer a range of home link opportunities to help support this.

We have two ‘travelling bears’ that we encourage the children to take home for a visit. The Bears

are called Becky and Freddy and children enjoy having them come for a sleep over.

They often talk more freely after a visit.

We also encourage all our pre-school children to take part in the Big Bedtime Read.

Our ante pre-school children will be given a book home each Thursday to share at

home for a week.

More information about these initiatives will follow shortly. Parent Helpers We are keen to build up a bank of parents who would be willing to come in from time to time and support the staff with outdoor activities, arts and crafts and short walks around the local area etc. If this is something you would be interested in doing please speak to a member of staff. Noticeboard Please read our Parent Noticeboard as we try to update it regularly and keep you up to date with information, If you have any questions please speak to a member of staff or myself. We have been enjoying our new novels in our Literacy Circles and using the Blooms questions to help us inform each other about what we have discovered about our books. The children have a reading record to note down the pages that they have read at home and also take a note of any unknown words for our classroom display.

Literacy Circle novels should be brought to school every day. This term our main focus in writing will be with regard to Imaginative Writing and we will be learning how to use paragraphs effectively.

In Numeracy we will be aiming to become even more confident with rounding numbers to the nearest tens, hundreds and thousands. Alongside this we will be working on multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 using a wide range of strategies.

Our homework will be issued on a Monday with the children requiring to complete it by the following Friday. The pupils will have spelling words, numeracy work and a topic challenge. The children will receive a Homework Planner in their folder each week informing them of the tasks and will also have class notices for each particular week.

Our PE focus will be gymnastics and our gym days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Also, on Friday the 11th October we will be performing our Harvest Assembly at which we will be informing the rest of the school about the needs of the local foodbank. Thank you very much for your continued support. Primary 7
