    Students o Te MFG were invitedto attend a special event at theUniversity o Leeds which oered15 Key Stage 4 students an insightinto scientic careers and speci-cally, Physics degree courses.

    Students will soon be makingchoices about their uture, de-ciding which A level courses tostudy and which career path toollow, so this experience was aninvaluable opportunity or them towork with leading academics andcurrent students rom some o the

    regions most exciting universitiesthroughout an action-packed day.

    Students discovered what it is liketo study Physics at a top univer-sity by experiencing teaching andlearning rst hand on campus andthen using this opportunity toask questions about university lieand making applications to study

    higher education.

    Miss Sharpe explained, Te day

    was denitely action packed withenquiry based challenges set todevelop the thinking skills o ourstudents. Te students involvedrom York and Leeds University,who supported our students learn-ing throughout the day, were ex-cellent role models. Tey advisedour students to understand ullythe requirements o the courses

    they may wish to ollow and learnwhich activities inside and outside

    school can enhance their chances

    o university application success;our students ound the experienceinspiring.

    Discovering a world of Physics at Leeds University

    Students Debate Modern Issues

    Te MFG was invited to attend aprestigious event at Leeds Metro-politan University which oereda group o 15 Sixth Form studentsthe opportunity to experience asimulated UN Security Councildebate on intervention in Syria.Te Economic and Social Re-search Council and University or-ganised this event as part o theirNational Festival o Social Science.

    Students were provided with apack o preparatory materials tobrie them on their country andthey were supported by Leeds

    Metropolitan Undergraduate stu-

    dents to help them understand thematerial.

    Students were brieed on the situ-ation in Syria and the operation othe UN Security Council by one othe Leeds Metropolitan academ-ics. Tey then received a serieso lobbying presentations romcountry and NGO (Non-Gov-ernmental Organisation) repre-sentatives. Troughout the dayour students interacted in groupso various sizes, with studentsrom other Sixth Forms, to delib-erate on their personal and coun-

    try positions to decide whether

    there should be an intervention inSyria. Tey then presented theirideas in a mock debate in ront oan audience o 50 people.

    Christian Smith,Year 13 said, Iwould highly recommend takingpart in the day at Leeds Metropoli-tan University, even i a studentdoes not have a direct interest inpolitics or social science, as it givesyou a chance to develop skills(enquiry, debating, leadership andteam work skills) that you wouldnot usually have the chance todevelop in ront o an audience o

    Miss Sharpe explained, Teevent was excellent and providedour students with an insight intouniversity lie, as well as helpingthem to develop their own analyti-cal, thinking and communicationskills; it also provided an opportu-nity to strengthen their knowledgeo international aairs.

    Engineering andConstructionIn October, 35 students romYears 10 and 11 participated inan Engineering and Construc-tion Roadshow. Engineering isan area where the number o jobsor school leavers at 16 and 18

    is growing. Te workshop gavestudents a lot o inormation aboutthis exciting career opportunity.Tey gained the inside inorma-tion on the skills, qualities andprogression routes available tothem.

    Involvement in this workshop alsoprovided students with supportor their CV development, Further

    Education applications or job ap-plications in the uture.

    On Tursday 8th November 2012,we competed against 4 otherschools in a Graphics Competitionled by ID30 Design Ltd, Hud-derseld at Moor End Academy.

    Te schools Te MFG competedagainst were Moor End Academy,Salendine Nook High School,Honley High School and KingJames High School. In total, 21Year 9 students took part in thecompetition, which was intro-duced by Peter urner, who isChair o Friends o BeaumontPark and ID30 Design Ltd.

    Te design brie was to design alogo or the new visitors centrein Beaumont Park which will beprinted on all uture promotionalmaterial. Peter urner and ID30Design Ltd who judged the com-petition explained it could havebeen won by any o the competingstudents. Aer much delibera-tion, the competition was won by

    a student at Salendine Nook HighSchool.

    Te 3 Year 9 students who were

    Graphics Day chosen to represent Te MFGand Sixth Form, due to their cur-rent outstanding achievementsin Design and echnology, wereMichelle Mirza, Mariah Shawand Sarah Bennett. Mr Bailey,who took the 3 students to thecompetition stated, Te girlsperormed admirably consideringthey had to work with sowarewhich was slightly dierent tothat which they are used to here atTe MFG. Mariah, Michelle andSarah worked hard to producetheir logos - they demonstrated anexcellent work ethic and were mo-tivated throughout the duration othe competition.

    Whilst it was a shame their e-orts were not rewarded with aprize, they should eel proud thatthey reected Te MFG in a verypositive manner and that theywere chosen to best represent usbecause o their hard work anddedication toward the subject ographics.

    Storm Marsden in Year 8 has beenincredibly busy this Novemberwith the Spen Valley Scout andGuide Marching Band within theNational Youth Marching Band.

    On the 10th November she parad-ed through London or the LordMayors Show, and then at the endo November she took part or the3rd year running in the Birming-ham International attoo (a twoday event).

    Arabian Nights with a Twist!Students in Year 9 have been stud-ying a brand new series o lessonsin English this hal term, and havebeen involved in some experienceswhich are taking them beyond theclassroom.

    Working alongside students romAll Saints Catholic College inHudderseld, students have beenlearning about storytelling and itshistory.

    Te big question or their learn-ing this hal term, Why do peopletell stories? is ocused on the talesrom Arabian Nights, and involvesthem devising, writing and telling

    stories o their own.

    o help them develop their story-telling skills, a group o studentsrom both schools was visited byJo Hirons, a proessional story-teller, who enchanted the studentswith tales o soldiers, shoes andsphinxes, amongst other things!

    Students were able to hear someo the stories passed on throughthe oral tradition o storytellingrom one generation to the next,

    and got the opportunity to try onauthentic Arabic costumes to helpthem get into character. Tey willnow share their experiences withthe other students in their classes,and write their very own versiono the Arabian Nights tales, but

    with a Mireld twist!

    Growing awareness of Mens Cancer

    Eleven sta members at Te MFGhave been taking part in the now

    very popular Movember aware-ness campaign.

    During November each year,Movember is responsible orthe sprouting o moustaches onthousands o mens aces in theUK and around the world. Teaim o which is to raise vital undsand awareness or mens health,specically prostate and testicularcancer.

    Once registered at movember.comeach Mo Bro must begin the 1sto Movember with a clean shavenace. For the entire month eachMo Bro must grow and grooma moustache. Tere is to be no

    joining o the mo to the sideburns(thats considered a beard), theresto be no joining o the handlebarsto the chin (thats considered a

    goatee) and each Mo Bro mustconduct himsel like a true gentle-man.

    A Mo Sista is essentially a womanwho loves a Mo. An individualthat is dedicated to supportingthe Mo Bros in her lie throughtheir moustache growing journey;whether it be a riend, colleague,

    amily member or partner. Teseinspirational women are commit-ted to raising awareness o menshealth issues and much neededunds or mens health along theway.

    Mo Bros eectively become walk-ing, talking billboards or the 30days o November and through

    their actions and words raiseawareness by prompting privateand public conversation aroundthe oen ignored issue o menshealth.

    Since its humble beginnings inMelbourne, Australia Movem-ber has grown to become a trulyglobal movement inspiring morethan 1.9 Million Mo Bros and MoSistas to participate with ormalcampaigns in Australia, NewZealand, the US, Canada, the UK,South Arica, Ireland, Finland,the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark,

    Norway, Belgium and the CzechRepublic. In addition, Movem-ber is aware o Mo Bros and MoSistas supporting the campaignand mens health causes across theglobe, rom Russia to Dubai, Hong

    Kong to Antarctica, Rio de Janeiro

    to Mumbai, and everywhere inbetween.

    No matter the country or city, Mo-vember will continue to work tochange established habits and atti-tudes men have about their health,to educate men about the healthrisks they ace, and to act on thatknowledge, thereby increasing the

    Celebration

    Year 8 are holding a Celebra-tion o Success evening on

    uesday the 18th December5.00-6.30pm in relation to theBe Te Best You Can Be andValues programme. We areexpecting 80 students involvedand 160 parents to attend.Te evening will include pres-entations rom students on BeTe Best You Can Be, reading,

    their work on values and theirwork on charity events. Parentswill have the opportunity to seesome o the outstanding workthe year group have produced.Te intention is that the even-ing will be a relaxed one withChristmas rereshments.

    Trampolining ExcellenceCongratulations to Emily Powell (Le,Year 8) and Jodie Ramsden (Right, Year 7) who both competed inTe Yorkshire Schools Regional rampolining Championships where 20 competitors rom 10 Schools wererepresented in the U13 event. Both students are perorming at an excellent standard or their age and cansuccessully complete the complex 10 bounce routine reecting A Grade in GCSE PE. Te involves perorm-ing with uency, consistency in height and good orm both ront and back somersaults linked by a variety otwists and dierent landings on the trampolining bed.As Miss Sharpe, PE teacher, explained, Tere were over 150 parents, students and coaches in the audience,in Sheeld, which created an enlightening atmosphere or both Emily and Jodie to perorm in, but also one

    in which they had to ensure they controlled any nerves that this tense, yet exciting, situation created. I amvery proud o both students achievements and am looking orward to seeing them continue to develop withthe same enthusiasm and commitment that they have shown since they have been at Te MFG, so they cancontinue to develop more complex skills on the trampoline.

    Christmas Concert

    For a lot o people, Te MFG Christmas Celebration is the start to theChristmas period.

    Tis year the celebration will take place on Wednesday 12th Decem-

    ber at 7pm, and or the rst time will be held in the newly reurbishedChapel at Te Community o the Resurrection on Stocks Bank Road.

    Tere will be carols, music and readings, and, ocourse, mulled wine and mince pies aerwards.

    Year 13 BTEC Business

    Year 13 Business students weregiven the opportunity to hearabout Birstall Shopping Parkrom the Parks Regional Man-ager, Denis Copeland. Studentsare currently working on a retail

    unit as part o their nal year ortheir BEC Subsidiary Diploma

    in Business. Te school has de-veloped a strong partnership withthe shopping park which givesstudents real insight into how itoperates. Te team at Birstall havealso been invaluable in helping

    students with parts o the curricu-lum and providing an insight into

    the world o work.Denis Copeland said, Te stu-dents were antastic and askedsome excellent questions about thepark and its activities.

    The Olympics come to The MFGYear 13 Leisure students organised an Olympic un day or Sixth Form students on Wednesday 21st Novem-ber.

    As well as helping with their coursework, they managed to raise over 200 or Children in Need. Eventsincluded were: an egg and spoon race, three legged race, 100 metres, a long jump event and a relay event.

    Congratulations to all the organisers and those who took part.

    It was a antastic aernoon and a great eort in aid o a very good cause.

    Year 9 Fundraising

    Year 9 took part in a variety oundraising initiatives includingsponsored walks, cake selling,organising a summer ete, Liveor Lie Music concert, rafes andquizzes.

    Te year group raised over 1100last year or their chosen chari-ties including Kirkwood Hospice,Make a Wish Foundation andHelp For Heroes.

    Year 10 Readathon

    Year 10 have just come to the endo an amazing Readathon.

    From 15 October to 30 Novemberthey have been getting sponsor-

    ship to read a number o books.Monies collected are now comingin and the unds go to support thechildrens charities Readwell, CLICSargent and Roald Dahls Mar-

    vellous Childrens Charity. Tese

    charities help very ill children andtheir amilies.

    Representatives rom each Year10 orm have organised and co-

    ordinated the Readathon whichhas promoted reading or pleasureas well as undraising to help seri-ously ill children.Reading or pleasure is the single

    Year 10 launched their SkySports or Living programmeon Wednesday 28th November.Proessional athlete mentor Paul

    Broadbent worked with Year 9 and10 students during the day inspir-ing and motivating students torise to new challenges and developtheir leadership skills.
