What honor was it for the Lord to be king of Israel? What great thing

was it for the king of eternity to become the king of men? Christ’s

kingship over Israel was not for the purpose of exacting tribute, of

putting swords into soldiers’ hands, of subduing His enemies by

open warfare. But He was king of Israel in exercising kingly authority

over their inward natures, in standing for their eternal interests, in

bringing into His heavenly kingdom those whose faith and hope and

love were centered in Himself. For the Son of God, the Father’s equal,

the Word by him all things were made, in His good pleasure to be

King of Israel was an act of condescension, not of promotion; a token

of compassion, and not any increase of power. For He who was called

on earth the king of the Jews, is in the heavens the Lord of angels.

– Augustine of Hippo, “Tractate LI”

7 OPENINg HYmN

"All Glory, Laud, and Honor"

All glory, laud, and honor,

To Thee, Redeemer, King,

To whom the lips of children

Made sweet hosannas ring.

Thou art the King of Israel,

Thou David’s royal Son,

Who in the Lord’s name comest,

The King and blessed One!

The company of angels

Are praising Thee on high,

And mortal men and all things

Created make reply.

The people of the Hebrews

With palms before Thee went;

Our praise and prayer and anthems

Before Thee we present.

To Thee, before Thy passion,

They sang their hymns of praise;

To Thee, now high exalted,

Our melody we raise.

Thou didst accept their praises;

Accept the praise we bring,

Who in all good delightest,

Thou good and gracious King!

Words: Theodulph of Orleans, ca. 820; tr. by John Mason Neale, 1854; alt.

Music: Melchior Teschner, ca. 1615.

7 PRAYER OF INVOCATION

Almighty and everlasting God, which of Your tender love

toward humanity, has sent Your Son our Savior Jesus Christ

to take upon Him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the

cross, that all mankind should follow the example of His

great humility: Mercifully grant that we may both follow

the example of His patience, and also be made partakers of

His resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God,

forever and ever. Amen.

7SECOND HYmN

“Hail to the Lord’s Anointed”

Chorus:

Hail to the Lord’s anointed,

Great David’s greater Son!

Hail in the time appointed,

His reign on earth begun!

His reign on earth begun!

He comes to break oppression,

To set the captive free;

To take away transgression,

And rule in equity.

(Chorus)

He comes with comfort speedy

To those who suffer wrong;

To help the poor and needy,

And bid the weak be strong.

(Chorus)

To give them songs for sighing,

Their darkness turned to light,

Whose souls, condemned and dying,

Were precious in his sight.

He shall come down like showers

Upon the fruitful earth;

Love, joy, and hope, like flowers,

Spring in His path to birth.

(Chorus)

The tide of time shall never

His covenant remove;

His name shall stand forever;

That name to us is Love.

(Chorus)

Words: James Montgomery (alt. Sandra McCracken). Music: Sandra McCracken.

OLD TESTAmENT READINg

Isaiah 50:4-9

The Lord God has given me

the tongue of those who are taught,

that I may know how to sustain with a word

him who is weary.

Morning by morning he awakens;

he awakens my ear

to hear as those who are taught.5The Lord God has opened my ear,

and I was not rebellious;

I turned not backward.6I gave my back to those who strike,

and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard;

I hid not my face

from disgrace and spitting.7But the Lord God helps me;

therefore I have not been disgraced;

therefore I have set my face like a flint,

and I know that I shall not be put to shame.8He who vindicates me is near.

Who will contend with me?

Let us stand up together.

Who is my adversary?

Let him come near to me.9Behold, the Lord God helps me;

who will declare me guilty?

Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment;

the moth will eat them up.

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

CONFESSION OF SIN

Pastor: All we like sheep have gone astray;

we have turned—every one—to his own way…

Isaiah 53:6a

ALL: Have mercy on me, O God,

according to your steadfast love;

according to your abundant mercy

blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,

and cleanse me from my sin!

For I know my transgressions,

and my sin is ever before me.

Against you, you only, have I sinned

and done what is evil in your sight,

so that you may be justified in your words

and blameless in your judgment.

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,

and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,

and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;

wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Hide your face from my sins,

and blot out all my iniquities.

Psalm 51:1-7, 9

7ASSURANCE OF PARDON Pastor: …but the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

—Isaiah 53:6b

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and

remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of

life, and the grace and consolation of His Holy Spirit.

ALL: Amen.

7 HYmN OF RESPONSE

“O Great God”

O great God of highest heaven

Occupy my lowly heart

Own it all and reign supreme

Conquer every rebel power

Let no vice or sin remain

That resist Your holy war

You have loved and purchased me

Make me Yours forevermore

I was blinded by my sin

Had no ears to hear Your voice

Did not know Your love within

Had no taste for heaven’s joys

Then Your Spirit gave me life

Opened up Your Word to me

Through the gospel or Your Son

Gave me endless hope and peace

Help me now to live a life

That’s dependent on Your grace

Keep my heart and guard my soul

From the evils that I face

You are worthy to be praised

With my every thought and deed

O great God of highest heaven

Glorify Your Name through me

gIVINg OF FIRST FRUITS

“Hosanna, Loud Hosanna”

Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang,

Through pillared court and temple the lovely anthem rang.

To Jesus, who had blessed them close

Folded to his breast, the children sang their praises,

The simplest and the best.

From Olivet they followed mid an exultant crowd,

The victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud.

The Lord of men and angels rode on in lowly state,

Nor scorned that little children

Should on his bidding wait.

"Hosanna in the highest!" that ancient song we sing,

For Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven our King.

O may we ever praise him with heart and life and voice,

And in his blissful presence eternally rejoice.

7 PASSINg OF THE PEACE

Pastor: The peace of the LORD be with you.

People: And also with you!

Greet one another with words of peace and reconciliation such as

those above.

PREPARATION FOR COmmUNION

The “passing of the peace” precedes the Lord’s Supper as a liturgical reminder

of our unity as members of Christ’s body. 1 Corinthians 11:18-19 implores us

to not let factions and divisions remain in our midst. Thus, the peace calls us

to move toward our brothers and sisters as Christ moves toward us.

All who are united in Christ Jesus by faith and are baptized, communing

members of His visible Church are invited to come to the Lord’s Table. If you

are not communing but would like to participate, come forward and fold

your hands, and you will receive a prayer of blessing from the server.

mINISTRY ANNOUNCEmENTS visitors, please take a moment to fill out the attendance cards

located in the pew racks.

mORNINg PRAYER AND LORD'S PRAYER

And so Lord, we pray as Christ taught:

ALL: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in

heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us

our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the

kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever, Amen.

gOSPEL READINg

John 11:47-12:19

So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the Council and

said, “What are we to do?” For this man performs many signs. 48If

we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the

Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. 49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to

them, “You know nothing at all. 50Nor do you understand that it

is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that

the whole nation should perish.” 51He did not say this of his own

accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus

would die for the nation, 52and not for the nation only, but also to

gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53So

from that day on they made plans to put him to death.

54Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but

went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town

called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.

55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went

up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify

themselves. 56They were looking for Jesus and saying to one

another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That

he will not come to the feast at all?” 57Now the chief priests and

the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he

was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

12 Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany,

where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2So

they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was

one of those reclining with him at table. 3Mary therefore took a

pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed

the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was

filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4But Judas Iscariot, one of

his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, 5“Why

Page 17: The Lord’s Day in Worshipcovenantdayschool.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/... · toward humanity, has sent Your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon Him our flesh, and to suffer

was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given

to the poor?” 6He said this, not because he cared about the poor,

but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag

he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7Jesus said, “Leave

her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. 8For the

poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”9When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there,

they came, not only on account of him, but also to see Lazarus,

whom he had raised from the dead. 10So the chief priests made

plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11because on account of him

many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

12The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard

that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13So they took branches of

palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King

of Israel!” 14And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as

it is written,

15Fear not, daughter of Zion;

behold, your king is coming,

sitting on a donkey's colt!

16His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when

Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had

been written about him and had been done to him. 17The crowd

that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb

and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18The

reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he

had done this sign. 19So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see

that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Praise be to you, O Christ.

gOD WELCOmES US TO HIS TABLE

INVITATION

The Nicene Creed

All: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven

and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light,

very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance

with the Father, by whom all things were made.

Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven,

and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary,

and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;

He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again,

according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven,

and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again,

with glory, to judge the quick and the dead;

whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life;

who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father

and the Son together is worshiped and glorified;

who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins;

and I look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

from 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Mark 14:22-25

PRAYER OF HUmBLE ACCESS

ALL: We do not presume to come to this your Table, O merciful

Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your

manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much

as to gather up the crumbs under your Table, but you

are the same Lord whose property is always to have

mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the

flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink His

blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by His

body and our souls washed through His most precious

blood, that we may evermore dwell in Him, and He in us.

Amen.

CONSECRATION OF THE ELEmENTS

Celebrant: Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon

us and upon these your gifts of bread and wine,

that the bread we break and the cup we bless

may be the communion of the body and blood

of Christ. By your Spirit make us one with Christ,

that we may be one with all who share this feast,

united in ministry in every place. As this bread

is Christ’s body for us, send us out to be the body

of Christ in the world.

HYmNS FOR THE EUCHARIST

“O Sacred Head, Now Wounded”

O sacred Head, now wounded,

With grief and shame weighed down,

Now scornfully surrounded

With thorns, Thine only crown:

How pale thou art with anguish,

With sore abuse and scorn!

How does that visage languish

Which once was bright as morn!

What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered

Was all for sinners' gain;

Mine, mine was the transgression,

But Thine the deadly pain.

Lo, here I fall my Savior!

'Tis I deserve Thy place;

Look on me with Thy favor,

vouchsafe to me Thy grace.

What language shall I borrow

To thank Thee, dearest friend,

For this Thy dying sorrow,

Thy pity without end?

O make me Thine forever;

And should I fainting be,

Lord, let me never, never

Outlive my love to Thee.

“It Is Finished – Pt II (Hark, the voice of Love and Mercy)”

Hark, the voice of love and mercy, Sounds aloud from Calvary!

See, it rends the rocks asunder, Shakes the earth and veils the sky!

“It is finished, it is finished,” Hear the dying Savior cry;

“It is finished, it is finished,” Hear the dying Savior cry.

“It is finished,” O what pleasure Do these charming words afford!

Heavenly blessings without measure Flow to us from Christ the Lord!

“It is finished, it is finished,” Saints, the dying words record;

“It is finished, it is finished,” Saints, the dying words record.

Finished all the types and shadows Of the ceremonial law,

Finished all that God had promised; Death and hell no more shall awe!

“It is finished, it is finished,” Saints from hence your comfort draw;

“It is finished, it is finished,” Saints from hence your comfort draw.

Tune your harps anew, ye seraphs, Join to sing the pleasing theme;

Saints on earth and all in heaven, Join to praise Immanuel’s name!

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Glory to the bleeding Lamb!

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Glory to the bleeding Lamb!
