A Letter from Jason

Jim Weir, a long time valuable member of the J&J sales team, will be retiring at the end of next January. Jim has been with

us for 34 years and started by working on the shop floor. He was transferred to the administrative side of the business within a short period of time, and since then, his contributions to the sales department have been immeasurable. “Jim’s accomplishments and commitment to our company helped to increase our profitability, expand our product lines, and allowed us to develop strong rela-tionships with our customers and vendors. He will be missed,” said Bill Riggs, President of Somerset Welding & Steel.

Jason Cornell, J&J Sales Manager, will be responsible for oversee-ing the sales department at J&J truck Equipment that includes two inside salesmen, Vince O’Donnell and Quintin Wyandt.

Just like our routines change with the

weather, we at J&J, are going through changes as well. We are prepar-ing for the future more than ever as we contin-ue to build a team that is determined to increase market share, improve quality, become more competitive, and provide

exceptional customer service.

We have assigned new industry-experienced managers throughout the organization including in engineering, purchasing, and production. This has been an ongoing succession initiative that ensures our work will continue without interrup-tion.

We are focusing our energy on building on the brand you have grown to trust. The sales team is concentrating on working with our customers, dealers, and distributors in providing them with products that are built to last and built for the long haul. In this issue, we have listed the entire sales staff along with their contact information. They are ready to assist with your upfit needs and I encourage you to reach out to them if you have any opportunities where we could help. I also ask that you reconnect if it’s been awhile, as we all get caught up in the day to day, it’s always important to keep the door open for future op-portunities.

The 2018 economic outlook is still strong and looks to be another positive year for the trans-portation and truck equipment industries. After attending the NTEA Executive Leadership Summit in Chicago, IL last month, we returned to the office with great optimism for 2018. Class 5-8 truck chassis production is expected to grow despite the leveling economy. Our customer and dealer feedback are also in line with the industry projections which means J&J is ramping up and planning for another good year.

With this demand, J&J has released the 2018 Dealer Spring Buy Program to help assure that you have production capacity when you need it. While we are already booking orders for end users and fleets in early 2018, we have set aside planned capacity to support dealers bringing in their spring inventory. Our goals are to continue to meet our customers’ expectations for on-time delivery. It is also our company’s mission to ex-ceed our customers’ expectations for producing the highest quality products in the industry. As 2017 winds down, we hope you will consider J&J for your future truck body, trailer, tank, and truck equipment needs. Thank you for your past business and we look forward to serving you for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Jason Cornell, Sales Manager

Mack Trucks benefits of automated manual transmissions (AMTs) are clear. That’s why the majority of new

Mack trucks sold in the United States and Canada are spec’d with Mack® mDRIVE™ AMTs. AMTs are proving popular with fleets for several reasons. The biggest may be that they can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 10 percent over manual transmissions, as shifting is optimized and controlled by a computer. With proper driving techniques, AMTs also can extend clutch life and minimize damage to a vehicle’s driveline caused by improper shifting.

Employees Earn NATC Certifications

Tim Mateljan, Propane Product Man-ager (pictured left), and Barry Durs-

tine, Quality Control Inspector, recently completed a 3-day Certified Registered Inspectors training that took place in Woodbury, NJ. The training included two days of classroom work and one field day for hands-on sessions. The training included actual inspection of cargo tanks and simulated ves-sels as required in CFR 180,407. As J&J continues to expand its propane product line, it was necessary that the company maintain certified inspectors on staff who can administer audits and confirm proper testing, inspection, and documentation for J&J propane vessels.

Last Piece of the Puzzle

J&J completed the last piece of a three year succession plan puzzle to hire the next generation of J&J managers. Like

many companies in our industry, J&J’s man-agement team was at an end of generation phase, with many of our senior managers entering the twilight of their careers. As part of our strategic planning, in 2014, J&J began having open discussions with senior managers annually, to discuss their end of career goals and retirement time frames. Any managers that fell into the “5 years or less” retirement window, were “tagged” on J&J’s organization chart with a retirement window.

Having retirement windows publicly posted on the organization chart did two things: one, it helped the employee begin retire-ment planning for real; and two, it helped senior management focus on succession planning well in advance of actual retire-ment, knowing that substantial industry experience and knowledge would be lost with the employee’s retirement.

Last August, J&J hired Eric Brown, P.E., as a successor for Tom Pletcher, J&J’s current engineering manager and 40 year employ-ee. Tom spent his career with J&J and was steadily promoted up through the organi-zation for his work ethic, extensive product and computer system knowledge and quite frankly his faith. A man of God, Tom’s knowl-edge and manner of living has made him a tremendous asset to the organization both in his character and business acumen.

Tom was one of the primary architects of J&J’s business information system, the primary estimating and costing platform being used by J&J. Eric Brown worked for J&J, starting right out of college for 11 years before an 11 year stint in the defense indus-try. In his early career, Eric was the primary designer of some of J&J’s most popular product models. Eric brings a wealth of ex-ternal design and manufacturing experience back to the organization and will be a great asset to the team.

There’s no substitute for a dump body or trailer built by J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers.

A public utilities company ordered 6 of these service bodies for their Ford trucks. The Knapheide enclosed body features side

accessible storage compartments and an oversized cargo area that can all be locked centrally for maximum security. This truck config-uration enables owners/operators to sufficiently organize tools and equipment which means better efficiency and productivity on the job site.

Flatbeds are a favorite with J&J Truck Equipment customers. At J&J, we can custom build or provide standard flatbed packages.

This truck is outfitted with heavy-duty aluminum diamondplate tool-boxes with stainless steel locking latches. Custom pipe racks were also installed at front and rear of the truck. A Pennsylvania township is putting this truck to work.
