    President’s Message

June the mid-year month and this is a good time to review your new year’s resolutions. How are you doing with those New Year’s resolutions? Personally I forgot mine around mid-January. June 4th & 5th is the annual Huntington Beach Concours. Saturday’s Rod & Custom Show in the Park salutes Donut Derelicts and Sunday’s Concours de Elegance salutes Cadillac, BMW, and Indian & BMW motorcycles. This fund raiser for the Children’s Resource Center wing at the Huntington Beach Public Library has raised over $900,000 since its founding in 1985. Here’s a big thank you going out to the dedicated and hardworking volunteers. I would like to take the opportunity to let the membership know that Thursday, September 8, 2016 will be the Long Beach MG Car Club’s 800th general membership meeting. This meeting marks 66+ years of the LBMG Car Club. Hope to see you at the September 8th meeting at College Park Clubhouse, 808 Stevely Ave., Long Beach, CA. I have heard MG’s referred to as fun to drive around town, simple to repair and maintain, time consuming money pits, and old cars that tend to break often. Either you love them or you ignore them. As a family with an MGA, several MGBs, and an MGC I think we fall into the “love or at least like” category. I first heard about the Long Beach MG Car Club from my sister, SuzAnne, in 1970. SuzAnne needed a navigator for something called a rallye. This was when the club had Friday night and Saturday rallyes. Thus, I became a regular LBMG rallye navigator. Many of the old timers say they don’t remember me from the 70’s. Well, that may be because I was just a kid in High School but it could also be because we got lost most of the time as those rallyes had obscure direction with alternative meanings and lots of downright nasty tricks. Anyway by the time we finished everyone was well into the “party” mode and past the point of being able to remember who showed up late. However, I did become interested in how the LBMG Car Club started and follows is the story that was told to me by Dan Dickinson.

  • Page 3

It was 1950 when several MGB owners started meeting at restaurants or bars on a regular basis to talk about and show off their MGs. At that time MGs were considered an affordable sports car that was cheap to run and easy to fix. The stories about roads and the speed with which the driver claimed to have traveled lead to group touring to check out the various claims. Finally after sitting in a bar and downing a “few” beers Dan Dickinson jested that they should start an MG car club. And the rest is history. It is my understanding that it took several more beers to iron out the workings of the club. My Take: The Long Beach MG Car Club was conceived, designed, and nurtured by an exceptionally social group of people that owned and enjoyed driving MG’s. However, the most import concept for the club was the social aspect so owning an MG is not necessary but having the ability to have fun is a requirement.

    MUSEUM RUN XV 2016

In the fifteenth running of the “Museum Run”, we went to the Lyon Air Museum, located on the West side of John Wayne International Airport. A great collection of World War II planes plus motorcycles and cars of the same era. We were given dulcet to explain all the exhibits and other items on display throughout the museum. Oh, and by the way, there was a rallye that got us from the start to lunch and then the museum. Listed below are the results of that very simple and short rallye. Driver/Navigator Leg 1 Leg 2 Total Error 1st Mike Peters / 1.01 1.86 2.87 Juanita Fast 2nd Ken Thomas / 2.15 2.58 4.73 Marie Thomas 3rd Phil Glumm / 1.72 5.00 6.72 Merry Glumm Co-Rallymasters – Jim and Bonnie Elsten Checkpoint / pre-run – Jim Tulk and Marilyn Gettys Checkpoint worker – Linda Maxwell

Comments on the Rally: Museum Run, Lyons Museum We had a good time at the Lyons Museum. Does everyone remember the helms bakery truck? A great DC 3, and a film on how it was built. There were cars, motorcycles, planes, this is a beautiful facility, and worth the trip. Thanks Jim and Bonnie for a great rally, good lunch, and a fun trip to American history. -Marilyn

    VARA British Extravaganza

April is winding to an end. That might be a strange way to start a story about a race weekend but you need to look at it more as a marathon of weekends. For many on the LBMG Race Worker team, the lead up to the British Extravaganza began back in the middle of March with the VARA High Desert Challenge. The following weekend was Easter followed by weekends comprised of the Long Beach Formula E Race, credentialing for the Long Beach Grand Prix (or the Porsche Festival of Speed Race), the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and then VARA’s British Extravaganza. Your author’s Easter weekend involved family activities as I would image did many other workers’ Easter weekend. The weekend after British was SVRA’s race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. If you add that all up many of the team were busy seven straight weekends. That’s a whole season wrapped up in 2 months.

With that preface to the race report, Morris had his hands full getting a whole crew for VARA’s British Extravaganza. Morris did that “voodoo that he does so well” (compliments to Mel Brooks and Blazing Saddles) and gathered a first class team to handle the weekend’s festivities.

The cast (I’m sticking with the movie theme) was comprised of Jim Elsten in Turn 1/Re-entry, Greg and Juanita Fast in Turn 2 (or 2A, I can’t remember what it’s called). Mervyn Radley was in Turn 3 with Bobby Webster in Turn 4 and Jim Dingwall in Turn 5. Turn 7, also known as the black flag station, was handled by Candye Rucker and Bruce Saunders while John Payne was in Turn 9. Bob and Karen Lewis were in Turn 10 with Wayne Phelan and Doug Fetrow in Turn 12. The starters were Tom Jones and Rick Bush. Marilyn Getty’s crew on the grid was Linda Maxwell and Mary DeSantis. Jim Tulk was in Race Control with Morris and Laurie Glumm kept the log. The computers in Timing and Scoring were mastered by Ellen Lowery and Bonnie Elsten. Carolyn Berens was also on site to help Morris keep his sanity.

VARA members brought out over 150 cars including the Historic Group. Historic, in this case, included one 1910 race car and three cars built in 1916. (None of our workers are 100 years old but we feel like it after a long weekend.) There were several good size race groups and we had one incident where a Volvo Race Car rolled over six times coming out of Turn 7. They may be “boxy but good” (the movie Crazy People) therefore the driver was able to tell his story about his adventure later in the day.

It was a good weekend. Hopefully in 2017 the weekends leading up to the British Extravaganza won’t be quite as busy and Morris will have an easier time getting the team together. Help us out and start flagging with us. It’s the second best seat at the track and you don’t need to remember the Jaguar ad from Crazy People.
