    President’s Message

    Juanita Fast

October is here and that means it is time for the Great Western Rallye, “You May Have Seen This Before”. The rallye date is Saturday, October 22nd. The start location is behind the Hof’s Hut Restaurant at 2147 N. Bellflower Blvd, Long Beach. The driver’s meeting is at 7:45am and first car out is 8:01am. Come early and have breakfast at Hof’s Hut Restaurant. They open at 6:00am. The Great Western Rallye kicks off on the streets of Long Beach and then makes its way through mountains (okay maybe it’s only hills), along the ocean, and across several cities to end at an exciting (okay most restaurants are similar) lunch location. Hope to see you there. Last month was the 800th consecutive LBMG Car Club general membership meeting. I would like to thank everyone that attended the meeting for their support and membership in the LBMG Car Club over the years. I would also like to thank all of you that could not make the meeting but sent emails, texts, and phone calls of support and congratulations, you were missed. I would also like to thank the Board of Governors for their help and support with organizing and setting up for the 800th meeting. A special thanks goes out to Ken and Marie Thomas for the decorations and cake and the early birds that helped set up. For those of you that could not make the 800th general membership meeting just think back to the meetings in the past with the room filled with people laughing, serious conversations about rallyes and flagging, and the joy of talking with people you had not seen in awhile. Hope to see more of you at the October 13th meeting. My Take: The best way to appreciate the LBMG Car Club is to imagine life without an LBMG Car Club. My social life would take a great downward spiral, great friendships would be lost, and quite frankly life would not be the same. My life is filled with great relationships, monthly events, and my involvement with club events.

Greetings to our friends from LBMG. This is going to sound like one of those stories that Juanita and Greg produce.

Once upon a time, a very nice couple planned to attend the 800th Meeting of LBMG. In stepped fate! #1 John's pet 1982 Volvo started spewing gasoline last Thursday, Sept 1. John dutifully jacked up his pet and put Jack Stands underneath while he diagnosed the issue. He decided that it was something called an accumulator and that he could just by pass it with hose and hose clamps. That was Thursday. Friday, Sept 2, Carol wanted to take pictures of the Festival of Sail in San Diego Bay. So off we went, with sandwiches and cameras for a fun day. When we arrived home, there was a notice on the front door from San Diego parking enforcement. You are not allowed to leave a car in that position (this was less than 24 hours). John called around for info on parts and Carol went to the internet. As required John left a message for the SD Officer. He worked on it and then on the start up the kluge job blew off. Back to square one.

Sunday morning (Of Labor Day Weekend) the laundry had more water on the floor than is normal. Our laundry room is on cement so nothing really spoiled. Did I mention Labor Day? No calling a plumber then. John bought pieces of copper pipe and other stuff and began his attack. Well that was useless as the leak kept going. Monday night he contacted a recommended plumber who agreed to come Wednesday the 7th. So we began camping in our home. We have buckets to flush. We have 2 gallon jugs for washing and tooth brushing. Carol got to go to the public laundry mat. $2.25 for wash and brought it home to go in our dryer. John found an accumulator to install on his favorite Volvo. That will happen after the plumbing job which will hopefully be repaired on Thursday.

The plumber said it will be 5 hours. So we may or may not get to attend #800. Please know that we truly intended to celebrate with our Friends.

Love you all, Carol and John McKnight

They tried to attend the meeting……...

Ernie Reget in Memorial: Ernie died unexpectedly on

May 22, 2016. He joined the Long Beach MG Club on 3/9/1961 and received his 55 year award at the Installation Banquet this year. He and Adele were active in club activities, especially Rallying. They lived in the San Fernando Valley, so they had a long way to come, but that did not stop them.

Ernie was Points Chairman in 1966, Rallye Teams Chairman in 1965, and Recording Secretary for the years from 1968 through 1972, while Adele was Merchandise Chairman in 1970 and 1971.

Ernie owned Meyers Cookies. When Rick was in the hospital in Panorama City, Ernie would visit, usually every week. He always brought a large box of Meyers cookies, which he gave to the nurses. They really appreciated that and would ask “when is your friend Ernie coming again?”

When Ernie retired, he and Adele moved to Helendale and we did not see as much of them, but they stayed in contact. They came to the Installation Banquet every year. They stayed overnight with us for several years, driving back to Helendale on Sunday morning.

Ernie was also an avid golfer and usually had his clubs in the trunk of his car. He was a member of a golf group and wrote a golf column for the local newspaper for a number of years.

Ernie graduated from Stanford and Adele from Oregon State. They met when they were both worked at Liberty Mutual. Adele owned an MG and Ernie asked her if she was interested in joining a car club. She didn’t know there were such things, so he asked her if she would like to go to a gathering called Steakbake. That was the beginning of a relationship that resulted in 54 years of marriage celebrated May 19, 2016.

Ernie was like so many of our long-term members. He was active, would do anything he was asked, and really enjoyed being with the other members of our club. Thistraitis consistent with many members through the years of this club and continues to this day.

It was our pleasure to know and be associated with Ernie, he will be missed by all who knew him. We were glad to be able to call him “friend”.
