English is an international that easy people from a country communicates

with other people from different country who have different language also.

Therefore, students are hoping to be able to perform language skill such as

listening, speaking, reading and writing. The first way to introduce a language is

by listening. Then, we can speak, read and write. Listening is the ability to

identify and understand what others are saying. We cannot learn English without

listen to it first. Listening activity usually applies through tape recorder or by

using language laboratory. However, for the students, listening is including

difficult subject. So, in here the students must be listening carefully and pay

attention about what they heard.

The purpose of the research is to find out whether, there is any significant

difference between the listening comprehension of procedure text of the tenth

grade students of SMA Islam Al-Hikmah Mayong Jepara before and after being

taught by using talking stick in the academic year 2012/2013. This is a quantitative research, which relies on quantitative data based on

computation and measurement, operational variables and statistics. The method of

the research is experiment. This design of the study is the quasi-experimental

research with pre-test and post-test. There was try out before the test, and then it

was continued by validity and reliability test. The data were taken from the

objective multiple choice tests. The total population is 129 of the tenth grade

students of SMA SMA Islam Al-Hikmah Mayong Jepara in the academic year

2012/2013. This research applied a cluster random sampling technique to get

samples. The total sample is 33 students from X-1 class.

The result of this research shows that the listening comprehension of

procedure text of the tenth grade students of SMA Islam Al-Hikmah Mayong

Jepara before being taught by using Talking Stick in the academic year 2012/2013

is found the highest score is 92, and the lowest score is 28. And from the

calculation the data, the mean is 63 and the standard deviation is 15.40. So, the

result is sufficient. Meanwhile, the test result of listening comprehension of

procedure text of the tenth grade students of SMA Islam Al-Hikmah Mayong

Jepara after being taught by using Talking Stick in the academic year 2012/2013

is found the highest score is 92, and the lowest score is 60. And from the

calculation the data, the mean is 74.86 and the standard deviation is 8.35. It is

categorized as good. Besides, it can also be concluded that the t (obtained) value

x

5.26 in the level of significance α = 0.05 and the degree of freedom 32, the t

(critical) is 2.04, so the t (obtained) value falls in the critical region. Thus, Ho is

refused and accepts the Ha. So, the hypothesis that states, “there is any significant

difference of the listening comprehension of the tenth grade students of SMA

Islam Al-Hikmah Mayong Jepara between before and after being taught by using

Talking Stick in the academic year 2012/2013” is accepted.

signifikansi = 0.05 dan derajat kebebasan 32, t (kritis) adalah 2.04, jadi t

(diperoleh) nilai jatuh di daerah kritis. Dengan demikian, Ho ditolak dan
