n Nayarit existen espacios de belleza excepcional, muchos de ellos todavía poco

frecuentados por los turistas, lo cual les imprime un sello de intimidad cuando se decide visitarlos. Tal es el caso de la región conocida como “Lagunas Encantadas”, integrada por los municipios de San Pedro Lagu-nillas y Santa María del Oro, el primero cuenta con las lagunas de San Pedro y la de Tepeltiltic y el segundo con La Laguna de Santa María del Oro.

En esta edición descu-briremos tan solo algunas de las abundantes opciones de diver-sión y esparcimiento que ofrece esta última, a la que de manera coloquial se le denomina por sus siglas “Laguna de SAMAO”.

There are many exceptionally beautiful, unspoiled areas in the state of Nayarit rarely visited by tourists, which once discovered, will reward intrepid explorers with an authentic and unique experience. Such is the case with the region known as “Lagunas Encantadas”, comprised of the municipalities of San Pedro La-gunillas and Santa María del Oro. San Pedro and Tepeltiltic lagoons are found in San Pedro Lagunillas, and the second mu-nicipality is the home of Santa María de Oro. In this issue we will discover just some of the many options for fun and entertain-ment offered by the latter, locally known as “SAMAO Lagoon”.

El origen de los primeros asenta-mientos humanos de los que se tiene registro, se remonta a la época prehispánica, donde se señala que antes de la llegada de los españoles existía un pueblo a la orilla de la laguna de nom-bre “Acuitapilco”, mismo que con el proceso de evangelización fue reubicado a una gran plani-cie con importantes manantiales y que con el paso del tiempo se convertiría en el actual po-blado de Santa María del Oro, este último cal-ificativo producto de los hallazgos de múltiples yacimientos de oro en los alrededores de la la-guna. Para llegar a la laguna es necesario pasar por el pueblito de Santa María del Oro, el cual goza de una gran tranquilidad y contagiosa calma que permite recuperar el equilibrio a los ajetreados visitantes que provienen de grandes ciudades donde imperan el caos y el estrés. Al transitar por su calle principal es posible encontrar algunos productos llenos de

nostalgia: tercios de leña, raspados de pomarro-

sa, cocuixtles, gualacamotes, cocoyules, tamales

de lima, caña dulce con chile y limón, tejuino y

un larguísimo etcétera.

According to records of the first hu-man settlement, dating back to pre-Hispanic times before the arrival of the Spanish, there was a town on the lakeshore named “Acuitapilco”, which was relocated to a large plain with natural springs during the process of colonization. The village gradually evolved into the present day town of Santa Maria del Oro, named due to the multiple gold deposits found around the lagoon. The road to the lake leads through the town of Santa Maria del Oro, a calm and peaceful place that allows visitors to rejuvenate and rebalance their energies, coming as they do from big cities where stress and chaos often pre-vail. Along the main street there are many interesting and traditional products for sale: firewood, apple leather, tamales with lime, sugar cane with chili and lime, and many other re-gional specialties and delicacies.

La laguna tiene su origen en un cráter volcánico que con el paso del tiempo y debido a los escurrimientos de agua por las paredes terminó por convertirse en una laguna.

- GASTRONOMÍA -

La laguna de “SAMAO” cuenta con una gas-tronomía exquisita a base de pescados y maris-cos, el platillo típico es “El Chicharrón” de pescado, es decir, pequeños trozos de filete de mojarra cubiertos de una capa a base de harina, que una vez fritos les otorga una consistencia crujiente y deliciosa. Este platillo se sirve con sopa de ar-roz blanco, suculentos frijoles refritos, tortillas hechas a mano y una deliciosa salsa de jitomate con pequeños trozos de cilantro y cebolla.La recomendación para el postre es una capiro-

tada al horno que en realidad es más bien un budín que cuenta en la superficie con una capa bien doradita. Para disfrutar esta delicia recomenda-mos sin el más mínimo recato el restaurante “Mary”, ya que la cocina está a cargo de Doña Mary, mujer de manos mágicas que todo lo que toca queda impregnado de abundante sazón, además de que el área de comedor se encuentra a la orilla de la laguna, desde donde se pueden apreciar unas estupendas vistas. Otro postre por demás recomend-able es el plátano frito, que se puede encontrar en el restaurante “La Mata” y que consiste en un plátano envuelto en una tortilla de harina que se fríe y después se baña con chocolate líquido para ser servido con dos bolas de nieve de gar-rafa sabor vainilla.

- GASTRONOMY -

Santa Maria del Oro features exquisite cuisine based on fish and seafood. A typical regional

dish is “chicharron” fish, small pieces of tilapia fillet, breaded and deep fried, which gives it a crunchy and delicious flavor. This dish is served with white rice soup, succulent beans, hand-made tortillas and a delicious tomato sauce with cilantro and onion. Our recommendation for dessert is an oven-baked flan, which is a type of pudding that has a fine golden brown crust. We highly recommend Mary’s res-taurant to enjoy these culinary delicacies, as the kitchen is run by Mary herself, a cook with mag-ical hands that impart flavor to everything she touches. The dining area, located at the edge of the lagoon, provides wonderful views for your added dining pleasure. Another delicious dessert, from La Mata restaurant, is fried plantains: bananas wrapped in a flour tortilla, deep fried and then drizzled with chocolate syrup and served with two scoops of vanilla ice cream in a crystal des-sert dish.

- ACTIVIDADES -

Una de las actividades indispensables al visi-tar la laguna es un relajante paseo en lancha, el recorrer la laguna desde su interior resulta muy atractivo ya que podrá apreciar a plenitud la cara completamente cubierta de vegetación del cráter, de la misma manera visualizar toda la zona restaurantera, la zona residencial con sus estupendos jardines y la pequeña zona hotelera con hoteles boutique que cuentan con servicios muy exclusivos.Pero si lo que busca son los deportes acuáticos, se puede practicar el kayak, el esquí, wakeboard, o el novedoso deporte de stand up paddle board (tabla con remo) o bien darse un espontáneo chapuzón en alguna de sus pequeñas playas. Para los amantes de la bicicleta de montaña o de la caminata, es muy recomendable darle la vuelta a la laguna muy temprano o bien en la tarde antes de que se oculte el sol, segura-mente al pasar bajo la fronda de los árboles, las urracas seguirán su paso, al tiempo que generan un escándalo con sus cantos llenos de asombro. Si se cuenta con una cámara fotográ-fica, el espléndido paisaje es su mejor aliado, cualquier fotografía que se tome quedará como

si la hubiera tomado un profesional de la mate-ria.

- ACTIVITIES -

One of the essential activities is a relaxing boat ride. Touring the lagoon is very attractive as you can fully appreciate the vegetation of the crater, as well as a full panoramic view of the dining district, a residential area with beautiful gardens and the hotel area with small boutique hotels offering exclusive services.

If your preference is water sports, you’ll find kayaking, skiing, wakeboarding, stand-up pad-dleboarding, or you can take a quick dip at one of the small beach areas. For lovers of mountain biking or hik-ing, it is advisable to tour the lagoon in early evening before the sun dips behind the crater, and as you pass under the canopy of trees, the magpies will send up a scandalous chorus, a wondrous early morning song. If you have a camera, be sure to take some pictures of this unspoiled spot for a last-ing memory of this beautiful volcanic lagoon.

La laguna posee una gran variedad de flora y fauna, lo que le ha valido ser incluida en la lista de parques

nacionales. SAMAO cuenta con una importante infraestructura turística

que ofrece todas las comodidades para pasar unos lindos dias de des-canso, ya sea pescando, esquiando o

paseando en lancha.

The lagoon is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, which have earned

it a place on the list of national parks. SAMAO possesses a major tourist

infrastructure providing visitors with everything they need for a few days of

rest, fishing, skiing and boating.

Un sitio verdaderamente interesante para visitar dentro de una experiencia cultural es el pueblito del Real de Acuitapilco, fundado por los espa-ñoles al encontrar oro en sus alrededores. Este pueblo fue económicamente muy importante en la región, tanto que para 1536 ya contaba con una alcaldía. Durante la época del virreinato abrir una mina resultaba relativamente fácil, la primer condición que ponía la corona era contar con al menos cinco trabajadores y que la quinta parte del total de lo producido fuera en-tregado a la corona. Actualmente se puede apreciar en per-fecto estado de conservación el acueducto que servía para derivar el agua necesaria para el pro-ceso de extracción de oro, inclusive existen una buena cantidad de tahonas (piletas de piedra ma-ciza en forma de una gran cazuela) que eran op-eradas por burros haciendo girar una gigantesca piedra circular, la cual se encargaba de pulver-izar la roca, se le agregaba agua para generar un líquido espeso que al combinarlo con el asogue

(mercurio), permitía separar el metal de la tierra, finalmente el resultado de este proceso se fundía para poder apreciar el oro en todo su esplendor. Los registros locales señalan que por cada 20 kilos de roca, se extraían un promedio de dos gramos de oro. Para visitar este sitio, es necesario lle-gar al hotelito “Cabañas El Real”, donde en medio de frondosos y bien cuidados jardines se pueden apreciar estos vestigios. Si llega al pórtico del ho-tel y lo encuentra cerrado, pregunte a cualquier persona que encuentre en el pueblo por “Jorge”, de inmediato cualquier niño acomedido llevará su mensaje para que el responsable acuda de in-mediato a mostrar las instalaciones

One interesting place to visit is the town of Real de Acuitapilco, founded by the Spanish in their search for gold. The town was an important cen-tre for the economy of the region, and was big enough to appoint a mayor by the year 1536.During the Spanish viceroyalty founding a mine

was relatively easy; the first condition that the

Crown mandated was to have at least five workers

and one fifth of the mine’s total production was to

be delivered to the Crown. The aqueducts used to

provide the necessary water for the extraction of gold are still in perfect condition today, as are the stone ovens (solid stone sinks in the shape of a big pot) that were operated by donkeys. A massive circular rotating stone was responsible for spraying the rock, then water was added to produce a thick liquid which when combined with the mercury, allowed the metal to separate from the earth, resulting in the melted gold in all its glory. Local records indicate that for every 20 kilos of rock, an average of two grams of gold was extracted. To visit this site, look for the small ho-tel, “Cabañas El Real”, where you’ll find vestiges of the gold-making process amid lush and mani-cured gardens. If the hotel is closed when you ar-rive, ask anyone in town for “Jorge”, who will be happy to show you around the premises.

La Laguna de Santa María del Oro se encuentra a 50 Km. de Tepic, a 210 Km de Puerto Vallarta y a 190 Km de Guadalajara.

Está a 20 Km. por camino pavimentado desde el crucero de Santa María del Oro en la carretera federal 15, o desde la caseta de cobro de la autopista Guadalajara -Tepic.

Es solamente 2 horas vía autopista de Guadalajara, 45 minutos de Tepic y 3 horas

de Puerto Vallarta.

Laguna de Santa María del Oro is situated 50 km S.E of Tepic, 210 km N.E. of Puerto Vallarta and 190 km N.W. of Guadalajara.

It is 20 km via a good paved road from both the Santa Maria del Oro turnoff on

highway Mex. 15 or from the Santa María del Oro tollbooth on the Guadalajara

-Tepic highway. It takes about 2 hours via highway from Guadalajara and 50 minutes

from Tepic.

The won-derful aroma of their espresso wafts through the bookstore tempting early morning shoppers.Here you can start your day with goodies such as fresh muffins, black bean brownies, and choco-late cupcakes or purchase whole or ground coffee to take home.

n este mundo con fronteras desdibujadas, la realidad se define, entre muchas cosas, por el espacio, donde las esquinas del mun-do resultan el fondo perfecto -el motivo perfecto- para excavar su hermosura. “La belleza está en los ojos de quien la mira”, así

lo refirió Salvador Dalí, y para retenerla quizás sólo se necesite el ojo que la capture, una cámara que la reproduzca y el momento para mirarla y recrearla infinitamente. La trascendencia de la imagen y el valor de las mil palabras.

Conocida en el medio por su capacidad de hilar delicadamente la vida de una comunidad con las suntuosidades del fashion, la fotógrafa Anne Menke es un espíritu libre cuya pasión por la moda y por viajar le han dado un lugar en la industria. Ha pasado los últimos 15 años de su vida viajando por el mundo haciendo fotografías para las “biblias” Vogue, Elle, Cosmo-politan, W y Marie Claire. Sus editoriales suelen ser en lugares recónditos como Mongolia, India, Perú, Japón, Kenya; y es justo allí donde Menke y su equipo producen hermosas imágenes llenas de folklore local y alta moda.

Con un estilo que derrocha glamour y un profundo sentido de la realidad, la fotógrafa alemana nos entrega en su segundo libro “See The World Beautiful”, una colección de fotografías tomadas alrededor del mundo a manera de reportaje. Influenciadas por la espontaneidad de Henri-Carter Breson y con el toque humanitario de Alfred Eisenstaedt, las imágenes y textos del libro dejan ver la delgada línea donde el fashion se encuentra con

la cultura étnica y popular. Un gaucho relinchando su caballo en la Pampa Argentina, el cadencioso caminar de tres mujeres de blanco en Brazil, un dueto de mujeres de piel morena que contrastan con sus faldas de flores azules. “Fashion is where you find it” (“El fashion está donde lo encuentras”) escribió Tommy Hilfiger en la introducción del libro, recalcando la capa-cidad de Anne de convertir cualquier esquina del mundo en la locación perfecta donde la belleza y las diferencias culturales colindan.

“See The World Beautiful” entreteje los detalles del mundo real con el mundo de la moda, Menke lo describe así: “Este es un diario fotográfico sobre las diásporas culturales en el mundo y representa historias perdidas de transición frente a la amenaza inminente de la globalización”. El resultado son imágenes únicas, llenas de sensibilidad. Así mismo, Menke asegura que mientras pasa tiempo en los poblados rurales o en asenta-mientos indígenas, logra ver, de primera mano, de dónde viene mucha de la inspiración de los grandes diseñadores, los colores del mundo iluminan las más opulentas pasarelas.

La artista se piensa como una fotógrafa de moda que ama retratar a la gente en su día a día “cuando produzco fotografía de moda uso a gente real y también a modelos”. Conocer gente con marcadas diferencias socio-culturales y explorar nuevos terrenos son fuente de inspiración en la vida de Anne, compartir dichas experiencias lo considera un “regalo increíble”.

Anne nació en Alemania y desde temprana edad supo

que sería parte del mundo de la imagen, a la edad de 18 años decidió dedicar su vida a la fo-tografía de moda. Así se mudó

a la ciudad de Dusseldorf.

En la década de los 90 se mudó a París, donde comen-zó su fructífera carrera dentro de la fotografía comercial y en

el mundo de la moda.

Años mas tarde Nueva York sería el hogar de su estudio, hoy en día, Anne divide su

tiempo entre México y la Gran Manzana.

Y debió ser justo esta conexión con la cultura po-pular, lo folklórico, lo relajado y la tranquilidad de la naturaleza lo que llamó la atención de Anne para dimitir los aires cosmopolitas de Nueva York, y dejarse caer en las suaves arenas , las cándidas espumas y las estrelladas noches de Sayulita, en la Rivera Nayarit.

Ya son varios años que han pasado desde que Menke emigró a Sayulita para vivir y conside-rarlo como el puerto seguro para su familia. Así pues, Sayulita se ha convertido en el spot favorito donde la fotógrafa juega a lo mismo que juega en todo el mundo: a ver la belleza.

“Beauty is happines, happines is Beauty”

In this world of blurred boundaries, reality is de-fined, among other things, as the space where the corners of the world are the perfect backdrop and the perfect reason, to bring out its beauty. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” said Salvador Dalí, and in order to retain it perhaps all that is needed is an eye to capture it, a camera to reproduce it and a moment to recreate it endlessly. The result can be an image that can transcend a thousand words.

Known in the field for her capacity to gently weave images of ethnically diverse commu-nities with the glamour of fashion, Anne Menke a free spirit photographer, has earned her place in the industry. She has spent the last 15 years of her life traveling the world taking pictures for the grand dames of fashion: Vogue, Elle, Cosmopoli-tan, Marie Claire and W.

A gaucho on his neighing horse on the pampas of Argentina, the rhythmic walk of three Brazilian women wearing white, a duo of women whose brown skin contrasts with their blue-flow-ered skirts. Her editorials are set in exotic and dis-tant places such as Mongolia, India, Perú, Japan, and Kenya. In these faraway countries Menke and her team have produced beautiful images of local folklore and high fashion.

Anne was born in Germany and has been snapping photographs since the age of twelve. At an early age she knew that she wanted to be a part of the world of images, and at 18 decided to devote her life to fashion photography. She moved to the city of Dusseldorf where she found a job as a photography assistant, and just two years later she began her solo career. In the 90´s she moved to Paris and began a successful career in commercial and fashion pho-tography. Years later New York would become her home and today, Anne divides her time between México and the Big Apple.

With a style that exudes glamour and gives off a

profound sense of reality, Anne Menke delivers us her second book “ See the World Beautiful”, as a collection of photographic stories taken around the world. “Fashion is where you find it,” wrote Tommy Hilfiger in the book’s introduction, emphasizing Anne’s ability to turn any corner of the world into the perfect location where style and cultural differences seamlessly blend.

Influenced by the spontaneity of Henri-Carter Breson and the humanitarian touch of Alfred Eisenstaedt, the stills and texts of the book reveal the fine line where fashion meets ethnic and popular culture. “See The World Beautiful” weaves the details of the real world with the world of fashion, and as Menke describes it: “This is a photo journal of cultural diaspo-ras in the world and represents the transition of lost histories against the imminent threat of globalization.”

The results are unique images, presented with sensitivity. Through Menke’s portrayal of her time spent in rural villages and indigenous settlements, we are able to see first hand where much of the inspiration of great designers comes from; the colors of the world are illuminated on the most opulent runways. The artist sees herself as a fashion photographer who loves to portray people in their day-to-day life - “when I produce fashion photography I use real people and models.” Meeting people with marked socio-cultural differences and exploring new areas are a source of inspiration in Anne’s life, and she considers sharing those experiences an “incredible gift.” It is this very connection to popular culture and folklore, and the relaxing calm of nature that prompted Anne to retire from the cosmopolitan ambience of New York, and to indulge in the soft sand, the timeless foamy sea and the starry nights of Sayulita, on the Riviera Nayarit.

Menke has lived in Sayulita for several years and finds it to be a safe haven for herself and her family. Sayulita has become her new inspiration to continue producing images full of beauty. “Beauty is happiness, happiness is Beauty.”

A tras de la puerta del corazón aparece la Casa Love, un hogar donde se vive libremente, sin necesidad de coche, todo lo puedes hacer en bicicleta o paseando por el pueblo, la selva y las playas. Situada en la segunda planta, justo ar-riba de la boutique, este recinto inigualable por la distribución de sus espacios es la promesa de una noche estrellada, arrullos del mar y saludos al sol. La vista panorámica sobre el spot de surf causa adicción, aquí han crecido grandes campeones como Tigre, Diego Cadena y una nueva generación de amantes de las olas de la tribu Mignot representando a Sayulita alred-

edor del Mundo. La casa está decorada con re-cuerdos de los viajes y obras de arte. Casa Love tiene siete habitaciones, con la posibilidad de alquilarse por días, semanas u horas de photo-shoots. Es sin duda el lugar perfecto para com-partir momentos divinos con amigos y familia.

Behind the door with a huge painted heart lies the stairway to Love, a home where one can live freely. Without the need of a car, everything can be done using a bicycle or by strolling around the town, jungle and the beaches. Located on the second floor just above the boutique, this unique spacious venue holds the promise of starry nights, a calming sea and morning salutations to the sun.

The panoramic view of the surf break can be addictive. In this very place, great champions such as Tigre, Diego Cadena and a new generation of Mignots have been raised, now representing Sayulita in surf competi-tions around the world. Casa Love has seven rooms, which include a large palapa area that works well as a dining area or a perfect spot to hang a hammock. The house is decorated with travel souvenirs and artwork and is available as a rental space for groups or location shoots. At Casa Love both friends and family members will feel welcomed by the warmth of this tropi-cal home.

La segunda parada dentro del recorrido por este “multi-espacio”, es la Boutique, que desde su apertura hace nueve años ha causado sensación con sus perlas negras, sus bolsas, bikinis y camisas de corazón. La boutique siempre se ha caracterizado por su deco-ración original, en sus paredes cuelgan vestidos bordados, multi-colores bolsas de piel, hermosas fotografías y espejos redondos que acentúan aún mas, el espíritu juguetón que impera en este lugar. El suelo de madera, pintado a mano, es una especie de cortesía a la unión y al trabajo en equipo. Quien quiera que entre a esta tienda, sale encantado.

The second stop on the tour of this multi-space is the bou-tique, which, since its opening nine years ago, has caused a sensation with its displays of black pearls, colorful bags, bikinis and shirts decorated with hearts. The boutique has become known for its eclectic and artistic interior. Gracing the walls are embroidered dresses, multicolored leather bags, beautiful photographs and round mirrors that further accen-tuate the playful spirit that prevails here.

La última parada y aun lado de la Casa Love se encuentra la galería. Un espa-

cio para la creación y el dialogo creativo que busca la integración de la gente

que concibe el arte como una pasión que merece ser disfrutada y compartida.

El lugar propone múltiples talleres con las puertas abiertas para todos. La sala

de exhibición ha sido engalanada con la obra del Maestro Sergio Hernández,

artista oaxaqueño representante del realismo mágico contemporáneo.

En Espacio Pachamama también se crea campañas de concientización, apo-

yando la idea de formar un centro comunitario en el poblado de San Ignacio

en conjunto con la Lic. Jessica Zepeda y “La Casa Clu” donde a través de los

juegos, talleres, deportes, charlas y otras herramientas interactivas se enseña

a los adultos y a los niños a desarrollar sus potenciales para vivir una vida

plena y consciente.

The gallery is the last stop and is located beside Casa Love. It is a space for

creativity and artistic dialogue that seeks to integrate people who see art as a

passion that deserves to be enjoyed and shared. Its doors are open to all and

the space has hosted many creative workshops.

The showroom displays the work of master Sergio Hernandez, a Oaxacan

artist and leading representative of contemporary magical realism.

The Pachamama space also creates awareness campaigns and helps artists to

develop their talents and ideas. Ideas such as the creation of a community

centre in the town of San Ignacio was formed here, with the support of Jessica

Zepeda. Casa Clu was founded as a space where games, workshops, sports,

talks and other interactive activities teach children and adults how to develop

their potential to live a happy and conscious life.
