Hello everyone and welcome to the NSW AHA first newsletter of 2013! My name is Maddison Hosking and as of the 2013 Annual General Meeting I am the new Publicity Officer. I was very excited to become a major part of the team, as I have a lot of ideas in store for the upcoming shows. This newsletter will be released bi-monthly, and in it will include various stories, news and information that is vital to the Horse Industry. Be wary of me at the upcoming shows, as I will be equipped with a camera to take photos of all those behind the scenes unsuspecting victims! Anyone is welcome to send through a photo and a story about their horses! Within this newsletter is information regarding the Horsezone website, stories and news from some members, East Coast results, and other bits and pieces! If you find an error, or would like to offer any suggestions or ideas, please don’t hesitate to email me at: [email protected] Thank you, and enjoy! Maddison Hosking.

2012 East Coast Arabian Championships

It’s hard to believe that East Coast has come and gone already, with all the hours the hard working committee put into the lead up and then during the show it is over so quickly. The weather was perfect and apart from a hick up with some clashing that we tried to deal with to make it fair on everyone things ran pretty smooth. This year seen a trial format for saddle and halter championships being held over two separate nights. We have had brilliant positive feedback from this change. As when you first change things there is always an ironing out period and we welcome any feedback to help next years show.

Our International Judge Emma Maxwell from the UK did a fantastic job with the long hours that she, as well as all the other judges, had to endure. We would like to thank Emma for bringing her credibility to our show. Our Australian judges are also to be commended on the fantastic job they all did over the course of the show. A big thank you to Belinda Hoile, Mieke Bigg, Roger Fitzharding and our Dressage judges Jan Geary, Pip Tonkin and Cathy Padgen. Whilst we might not all have a positive result, the judges are out in the elements doing their best with what they are faced with and harsh critical comments are not welcomed, without them we wouldn’t have a show!

Our committee members worked tirelessly over the course of the show and we would love for people that have some spare time put their hand up to help out wherever they can. We hope you all had a terrific show, win lose or draw and we look forward to sharing the exciting changes for next year!

- Tanya Geyteman, Secretary.

Ripples has had great success at quite a few major shows during the past couple of months. This year, she won three championships at the East Coast Championships in February, in all her three classes! We won Champion Part bred Arabian Mare under Saddle, Bridle Path Hack ne 14hh and

Show Hunter Mare ne 14.2hh. This success continued at the Australian Arabian Championships where she was Top 5 in Show

Costume and Part bred Arabian Mare under saddle, and also won the Australian Champion Show Hunter ne 14.2hh!

The Chocolate Pony continued on to Sydney Royal where she won the Ridden Arabian Derivative 13-14hh. Then, not to be outdone, my versatile pony showed how the Arabian breed can hold

their own against open company, and won the Sydney Royal Working Hunter Pony 12.2-14hh out of a large class the next day!

To add to her successful run, Ripples also won Champion Arabian Derivative Show Hunter at the 2012 NSW State Titles, and Reserve Champion at the 2012 National Arabian Stud Show. Another

award to add to her long list was winning Reserve Champion Led, and Champion Ridden Arabian Derivative at the 2012 National Stud Pony Show.

Ripples has been such a consistent and versatile pony, always holding her own in open company. She also gained quite a few Champions at the 2012 National Capital Horse Show, including

Champion Show Hunter Pony and Runner Up in the first All Breeds Hunter Challenge! Ripples also won Champion Ridden Australian Saddle Pony at the recent National Saddle Pony Championships

in February this year. Ripples is only 13.2hh, and carries 50% Arabian blood. She is such a wonderful ambassador for the Arabian breed as she is incredibly versatile and holds the desired beauty. We are so proud of all

her achievements in her career and love her dearly. We are also proudly sponsored by and support Top to Toe Equestrian, Riverden Browbands and

Stance Equine.

How old were you when you got into horses, specifically Arabians? How did it start? I was born into horses, my mum (Kerry) had bought my older sister Kim a pony & there was a Trotting Track across the road from my Grandparents property in Kellyville NSW were mum would always find me watching, my younger sister Courtney had a purebred Gelding called Burrendah Desert Fire that she competed on & did very successful. How many horses do you own now? I own two horses at the moment a Quarab mare called Kaarinee (Quatia Califar x Rainee Star Bar) that's Australian Champion led/Ridden Quarab which she's due to foal this August & will be a full Sibling to Crown Lodge That’s Gold (Karrinee x Gold N Wings), current Res Champion led Quarab Gelding & Champion of Champions Quarab at East

Coast. What I love about the breed is that there so versatile, I camp draft with Karrinee & Crown Lodge That’s Gold has to work cattle as well to move them around on our cattle stud in Bowral NSW. Do you have a favourite? My favourite horse I have would be Crown Lodge that's Gold, as he is a bucket baby. He was raised by my mum & two sisters. He would not be here today if it wasn't for them with long night feeds & supervision. I truly and proud to say I own an Arabian horse. What is your most memorable moment where your horses are concerned? My most memorable moment was when my younger sister Courtney Gibson won East Coast Cup, I was very proud that as a family we did it together. I wish people took the time to understand that "Arabs" are not mad or crazy but they are such a versatile breed.

NICOLE KULLEN

Margaret & Nicole Kullen with Nikshar Valentino As another year gets under way so do the shows & the dreams that many hope to be achieved. And 2013 is no different for NSW member Nicole Kullen... In 1996 Nicole was struck down with Meningococcal Meningitis Septicemia. She lost both lower legs, all function and feeling in both hands and wrists, partial use of her arms and all of her internal organs were damaged. Plus she relies on Peritoneal Dialysis 4 times a day due to kidney failure to keep her alive & her mother Margaret is her fulltime carer. But even with her extremely long continuing battle with way too many surgeries & admissions to count & a life time dealing with degenerative health & disabilities ahead, Nicole won’t let this get her down! With a big need for the horses of Nikshar Stud to be respectful, patient, and accepting to many different circumstances they’d normally never experience in a life time, Nicole still handles & trains all of their horses including the foals, from both her electric wheelchair and whilst standing on prosthetic legs. All the horses young & old are used to being around her wheelchair & most are imprinted by Nicole & Margaret at birth. They also breed with temperament in mind, along with being beautiful, well conformed individuals. Most know Nicole thru her National & Paralympic achievements after she began to ride

competitively again in 2000, and became involved in Para Equestrian Dressage & Open Dressage Competition with Equestrian Australia & the FEI. Nicole was the 2009 and 2010 Para Equestrian National Dressage Champions, with three National titles two years in a row! She was also the 2005 National Champion as well. Nicole’s travelled to represent Australia overseas in Belgium, Hong Kong (for 2008 Beijing Paralympics), the United Kingdom for 2007 World Champ's where she won Silver & Bronze medals & to Kentucky USA for the 2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG). Unknown to many, Nicole’s health is continually deteriorating & causing several problems, including making her quite weak. After 2010 WEG, her health was getting worse and it was clear she was becoming too weak to ride her main competition horse Nikshar Nomination, an imported KWPN Dutch Warmblood & registered Arabian Warmblood with the AHSA. Knowing she couldn’t ride Nom to the best of her ability like she did in the past, Nicole made the extremely hard decision to retire their partnership. Whilst it was a heartbreaking end for the successful combination & for Nicole to no longer be competing for her country, unfortunately it had to be done. However they ended their partnership knowing they’d achieved so much together, including being an unbeaten

Page 11: 2013 Winter Edition

combination in all the Para Equestrian Dressage events held within Australia they’d contested, including winning national & international championship titles, & competing overseas as well. They also received several awards over the years for sporting excellence so Nicole has plenty of amazing memories to remember. But on a positive note when her health allows, the situation has given Nicole more time to work with her Arabian bred horses at Nikshar Stud, her true passion since a child. One especially exciting adventure for Nicole has been slowly bringing thru her young Purebred Arabian stallion ‘Nikshar Valentino’ (Rehal Gold x Pinnaroo Mary (x Golden Spark (IMP UK)). Valli’s a stunning up & coming Crabbet bred stallion whose been developing into a talented, gentle stallion with an enormous presence & versatility, just as Nicole had expected of him. Together they’re showing the world time & time again just how special a bond can be shared between a person’s heart & their chosen Arabian. The last few years, Nikshar Valentino’s had some great results in the show ring, including being sashed ‘Best in Show’, with both professional handlers & most recently with Nicole showing him from her electric wheelchair as well. They’ve received some really positive feedback about him & people are often amazed at the special bond they share, but he has such an incredible temperament, even in a crowd of horses, and is happy to be beside Nicole’s wheelchair. As Nicole says “He’s just a really special horse!” 2013 will hopefully be a great year with Nicole continuing her plans to showing Nikshar Valentino this show season & advancing him further in his saddle education as well. And most of all enjoy what an athletic & loving Arabian stallion he can be. Nicole also hopes to show his filly foal Nikshar Valentinah Rose (pending) in halter later this year as well. Born January 2013, she’s part welsh & a 51.7% Arabian Pony (with 47.615% Crabbet breeding). Known as Dora at home, Nicole feels sure she’ll follow in her sire’s hoof prints when her time comes as she’s already showing she has his amazing temperament, movement & flashy looks. Plus she’s been a pleasure for Nicole to work with whilst she’s been halter training her. So keep an eye out for this little girl! Hopefully it’ll be a great year for Nicole & her horses! So look out for her zooming around in her chair with either a horse or camera in hand & say hello to her & her mother Margaret in their green & gold Nikshar Stud kit proudly outfitted by AK Gossow Embroidery.

How Horsezone is helping the NSW AHA

When people list a horse for sale on Horsezone, they can select a Not for Profit Organisation at the checkout and Horsezone will donate 10% of the cost of their

listing to that organisation for sponsorship of events.

For example: Tom lists a horse and his advertisement costs $30. If he then selects the NSW AHA at checkout, you will receive $3 of his listing fee. Tom still

only pays $30 for his advertisement and Horsezone pays you $3. When the balance reaches $200 the NSW AHA will receive the money for sponsorship for

up and coming events.

So when you use Horsezone to list a horse for sale, don’t forget to select our Not for Profit Organisation, NSW Arabian Horse Association at the checkout so

we can receive a sponsorship to further better our events!

Crown Lodge has had a great 2012/2013

season, starting with State where Gold N Wings took home 3 State Champion Titles Led and Ridden Amateur and Ridden Stallion. Also I took along his baby, Crown Lodge Astro Boy (who is now sold to Claire Redman of Vic) who also brought home Champion led Amateur Derivative and Reserve Champion Led Part bred Junior. Then came Arabian Nationals where Wingsey took one Reserve Champion Ridden Stallion and Champion Led Amateur Arabian. And Astro Boy won pleadings in all of his classes. East Coast Championships was another great show with a new pony that I purchased for my daughter Sarah! Koorana Centre Stage took out Champion Led Arabian Pony gelding 2/3 years which was a big surprise as it was his first Arabian show!! Wings also bought home champion Led and Ridden Amateur!! Wingsey has won State, Nationals and East Coast Champion for the led Arabian Amateur!! He took out Australian Champion Led Amateur Stallion as well, not bad for my first season as an amateur!! Koorana Centre Stage won Reserve Champion Arabian pony gelding at the Australian Championships as well! Now the boys are on a well-earned break, Koorana Centre Stage is being broken in and look forward to the coming season with the boys and a new filly as well!!

Mondamil Park Performance Horses reports a great

show season with Quarryview Hercules and their yearling Arabian Warmblood filly, MP Caterina, a newcomer to the show scene. Many of you would recognize Hercules, that imposing big barreled grey gelding shown under saddle by Leigh Richardson, from Mondamil Park. Herc, a 12.5% Arabian Warmblood Gelding (Centaur Gladiator x Double TT Touch of Leather) has only been showing for three years, having spent more time concentrating on Open Dressage. This year Herc found his place amongst the many Champions that grace the Arabian derivative classes. In the space of two months, Herc achieved success in Arabian and Open company – Champion Arabian Derivative Preliminary Dressage, East Coast Arabian Championships, Champion Arabian Derivative Novice Dressage , East Coast Arabian Championships, Arabian Derivative under saddle, Canberra Royal Show, February 2013, Lady Rider, Canberra Royal Show, February 2013, Champion Derivative Show Hunter over 15hh and ridden by AO, Arabian Championships, March 2013 and 6 x saddle Top Ten (finalist) ribbons, Australian Arabian Championships, March 2013. This was on top of an impressive 2012, where he won East Coast Arabian Reserve Champion Ridden Amateur Arabian Derivative, 6 Open Show Hunter and Arabian Derivative Show Hunter Championships, SDA Reserve Champion Novice Dressage, FSCDA Novice Dressage Champion, EDA Novice Dressage Champion and EDA Point Score Novice Runner up and a raft of Top Five or Top Ten placings. MP Caterina, (out of the pure bred Arabian mare, Gleniph Anastasia) is a 50% Arabian Warmblood Filly, sired by Mondamil Park’s resident Stallion, Belcam Caruso (Capone - imp Germany). Although only a yearling, Cat, as she is affectionately known, almost achieved the rare triple of winning Champion at her first three shows - those three outings were all at AA or AAA graded shows. Her first outing was the Sydney National Arabian Stud Horse Show in November 2012, where she won Champion Junior Arabian Warmblood. She followed that success up by winning Reserve Champion Yearling Arabian Warmblood Filly at the East Coast Arabian Championships in February 2013, only her second outing, and then topped it all off with her third outing - Champion Arabian Warmblood shown by AO at the Australian Arabian Championships in March this year. Cat’s impeccable temperament, combined with great conformation and movement, should see her excel as a saddle prospect in years to come. Mondamil Park Performance Horses breed Arabian Derivative and straight Warmblood horses for any equestrian pursuit. This year, a sibling of MP Caterina’s will be offered for sale. Belcam Caruso has been bred to the Royal Hit mare, Hollands Bend Regina and the Warmblood foal is expected in August of this year. For information on Regina’s foal or any of the other Arabian derivatives expected this year, please contact Mondamil Park Performance Horses on 02 6493 6236 or 0407 201 121.

Australian, Kerri Grisham lived in America for 17 years where she specialized in the importation of Australian Arabian ponies while also working in the film industry.

Kerri and her family returned to Australia June 2012 so she could produce a slate of films, TV shows and kid’s books with her business partner Hollywood writer/actor Todd Farmer. One of the shows and kids' books is based on the adventures of Amurath Santiago, her pure bred Arabian gelding she brought with her from the States. Santiago happens to have a perfect love heart star on his forehead and Addison her daughter has a heart birthmark on her arm. Sometimes real life has its own special magic you just can’t make up.

As a child in Australia, Kerri grew up around horses and was an accomplished rider and horse fanatic from a young age.

At 16 she suffered an accident while jumping cross-country and was left with spinal damage and has been in a wheelchair since. Her passion for horses and riding runs deep – evidenced by her commitment to the industry despite her devastating accident. Although the accident took her away from riding horses in the ring it did nothing to deter her energy and drive.

Kerri refused to step back from life. She first began importing Australian Arabian ponies and Australian ponies, back in 2001 and sits in a very unique position, linking the Australian equine industry and industry sponsors in the United States.

Kerri also works as a freelance journalist; covering USA Arabian show events for various horse magazines and online publications.

Kerri hopes her story of success will inspire others to set and achieve their goals, even in the face of adversity. She refuses to be dissuaded by the obstacles in her life and hopes to encourage others to do the same.

"I hope people see what I am doing and realize that anything is possible if you just put your mind to it and believe in yourself. Never give up and remember every great achievement was once considered impossible. Believe and achieve, I am living proof of that".

Charlotte and Tarnikka are a fabulous “young rider/older horse” duo – and are out there showing many “non-Arab” riders in the show world that these purebred Arabs aren’t the highly-strung, hard-work and naughty mounts that people think they are! Charlotte is constantly pulled up at Pony Club events by other mothers, asking her what breed of horse she is riding, as Tarnikka is so cool and calm all the time – and does just as well in her hack events as she does in pleasure and jumping events (sporting and mounted games are done very prettily, but not successfully!)

Tarnikka had spent 10 years simply showing with her previous owner – and had never put a hoof into a Pony Club or Interschool’s ring. Charlotte soon changed this, entering the Berry Interschool’s competition four weeks after Tarnikka arrived from Queensland. They placed in every event they entered, and finished the day placing third in the Challenge event (lead/hack/jumping), much to Charlotte’s surprise! Since deciding that she’s a showjumper in disguise, Tarnikka has gone on to do regular jumping at a local jump club, easily clearing the 90cm rounds, and jumps C grade at Pony Club regularly. Charlotte and Tarnikka have also recently placed in hacking at Sydney Royal, with a 2nd place in both PC Pairs and Team of Four Classes, making Top-10 in her rider class, and has represented her zone at NSW PCA State Show riding.

As well as Pony Club classes - Charlotte has continued to show Tarnikka in her Arabian classes with fantastic results. Her most recent results are a Supreme Ridden Arabian/Derivative at the Autumn ARABS Inc show in March 2013 (where she also won Champion ridden and Champion led Galloway), and Champion Purebred under saddle at Bathurst Royal Show in April this year. Both Charlotte and Tarnikka thoroughly enjoy their Show Costume classes as well, placing first in every costume class they have entered. Her next step is to continue with Tarnikka’s dressage training and continue to show everyone how versatile this fabulous little Arab is.

Charlotte’s short-term plan is to attend the State Championships this year, as well as the East Coast Championships and “The Aussies” next year. 11-year-old Charlotte Phillips and Charaway Tarnikka have done so well together in the last 10 months; we can only imagine what the future will hold for this superstar pair.
