On October 4, 2016, the City of Santa Ana held a ribbon cutting event to dedicate a new park site on the northwest corner of the city (Memory Lane Park) adjacent to the Santa Ana River. This ½ acre park site was funded with Housing Related Parks Grant and Park Acquisition and Development funds in the amount of $1,205,800. The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency is happy to announce that this year approximately $22 million will be spent on the purchase and development of new park sites, renovation of existing parks, improved security lighting, replacement of play equipment, installation of security cameras in various parks, development of the Roosevelt/Walker Joint Use Park site, renovation of the SA Stadium, new synthetic sports turf at the Dan Young Soccer Complex and a Giant River Otter Exhibit at the SA Zoo.

This project is funded with Community Development Block Grant Funding in the amount of $2.7 million. The City anticipates the project will be under construction in winter 2016 and completed in winter 2017. The 2.8 acre Roosevelt/Walker Joint Use Project is also being advertised for bids and will take a year to complete. This project includes a 10,000 square feet Com-munity Center, Basketball court, play equipment and Exercise Area, Community Garden, a jogging track and multi-purpose

The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency recently purchased two vacant parcels for the develop-ment of two new park sites at 1) 6th and Lacy and 2) Raitt and Myrtle Street. Community meetings will be held with residents to identify programs and activities that should be designed into the park. Once a concept plan is approved, staff will research grant funding sources to develop the new park sites.

The Santa Ana Zoo is also getting new improvements. A new 65 feet high Ferris Wheel is currently under con-struction in the Children’s zoo. This new improvement will complement the existing merry-go-round, train ride and farm exhibits in the zoo. The Zoo is also beginning the design work to renovate Amazon’s Edge to develop a new Giant River Otter Exhibit. The project is funded with Park Acquisition and Development funds and donations to the zoo. The project is estimated to cost over $2 million.

In the next year or two new improvements will be happening in our Santa Ana Parks, from new park sites, renovation of existing parks, stadium improvements and new exhibits at the zoo. Please join us as we plan groundbreaking and ribbon cutting events throughout the year. The improvements are being made for your use and enjoyment.
