Leopards Pride No Fuss Fundraiser A big THANK YOU to those of you who have already responded to our Leopard’s Pride No Fuss Fundraiser! We’re off to a good start, but we need everyone’s help. I know, I get it. I haven’t sent in my contribution yet either. Go-Play-Save and now Leopard’s Pride No Fuss – fundraising seems constant and can be overwhelming. It’s necessary if we want to continue to provide funds for the programs and services that benefit our staff and students at Lead Mine. The only other option is to have our kids selling things door- to-door, and this is much simpler with 100% of contributions coming right back to our school. If we could get just $10 for every child at our school we would be more than halfway to our goal. If we got $20 for every child enrolled we would be over the top! You don’t have to give $10, but every little bit gets us that much closer to the goal. It all goes back to supporting our kids and our staff. Extra forms are available in the front office or at http://leadminepta.weebly.com/forms.html. It has been requested that we offer PayPal as an option, and this can make it easier for friends and fami- lies to contribute. So, we have set up a Pay Pal account. If you would like to make an online donation, you can use the link: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s- xclick&hosted_button_id=DA5UFETELXTC8 . For the rest of us (yes, I’m including myself) here is a timely reminder to send your donations in. Our students need our support and we appreciate any help you can give! B.J. BACKPACK BUDDIES FOOD DRIVE

OCTOBER 27th – NOVEMBER 1st

BackPack Buddies provides children from food-insecure homes with healthy weekend meals during the school year right here in at Lead Mine Elementary and throughout Wake County. 1,850 children were served 68,450 backpacks at 55 sites in 7 counties during the 2013-14 school year! Please bring healthy items to school the week of October 27th. We will wrap up the food drive on Saturday, November 1st at the Carnival. Check the flyer in your child’s Tuesday folder for more detailed information! Questions? Contact Jennifer Heard at [email protected].

How Would the WCPSS Student Enrollment Plan Affect Lead Mine Elementary? On Oct. 7, WCPSS Board of Education reviewed the second draft of a student enrollment plan for the 2015-2016 school year. Draft #1 was presented to the board and the public in August. Draft #2 reflects many of the changes requested by parents. WCPSS staff members did their utmost to respond to parent concerns related to stability and choice while still addressing the district’s priorities of easing overcrowding and filling new and under-enrolled schools. Wake County is growing and new families mean new schools. Several new schools will be opening within the next few years and as new schools open, changes in school assignments need to be made; this is one part of the plan. Lead Mine is affected by the Calendar Options Change part of the plan. Most elementary schools have two calendar options for families to apply for a school of the opposite calendar. Under draft #2 of the proposal, Lead Mine’s year round calendar option will be Pleasant Union Elementary School. As it was, Wakefield Elementary was our year round option, but due to Wakefield changing to a traditional calendar for 2015-2016, it left our school in need of a new year round option. You can read more about the plan by going to www.wcpss.net and clicking on the "School Enrollment Proposal" link. You can also provide feedback on the plan online or in person. To do so online, you can go to the WCPSS website http://www.wcpss.net/enrollment-proposal/join-the-conversation.html and choose the "Is your student affected by the calendar options changes" link. You can also provide feedback in person at the community meeting scheduled for October 23 at 6:30PM at Southeast Raleigh High School.

Literacy Corner

Audio Books! An easy twist on the read-aloud is to have your children listen to audio books. Listening gives them a good sense of the flow and rhythm of language, enhancing how they express their own thoughts and feelings. A child understands what is spoken to him long

before he can read the words that are used, but if he has head the words before he tries to read them, it is easier to learn to recognize them in print. Listening to good children’s literature exposes your kids to a greater variety of words than they might hear in their immediate environment, equipping them with a formidable vocabulary with which to build their literacy success.

Math at Home Kindergarten

Have your child count to 100 by ones, fives and tens. Count objects like windows, doors, etc…

Use the calendar to count the # of days in a week or in a month, the # of months in a year, or to name the days of a week or months of a year.

Pour different amounts of water into 3-4 glasses of the same size. Compare the amounts of water using terms such as more, less, or the same.

Compare sizes of different objects using terms such as bigger, smaller, longer, shorter, etc…

Sort objects by size, shape and color, and discuss what makes them different from each other.

Find different kinds of patterns in your home such as on wallpaper, quilts, curtains, furniture, clothing, etc…

When you have a moment, try some of these activities with your child to improve his/her math skills. Source: http://www.gardnerk12.org/TitleI Math_home_activities.htm
