The Lorelei Queen? During the last two weeks of August, you may have noticed a boat quietly moving across the water which looks like a smaller version of the famous
African Queen of the movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Kathryn Hepburn. The “Lorelei Queen” is actually a 1910 hand-built wooden launch from northern
Michigan. It was purchased by Lorelei residents Dan and Jill Freshley in 2010.
It took Dan and Jill four years to complete the renovation of the 1910 boat, along with help from a wood boat restoration company in St. Bernard and Dan’s
father Ron who worked on the interior of the boat. The exterior of the boat is finished with a fiberglass coating. The boat is powered by an electric motor with
an AC drive system powered by an electric battery bank. They had taken out a “hit and miss “ engine which was used in the launch boats from the 1890’s to
1930’s and this engine tended to be rather loud. Dan says the wooden boat, being one of a kind, was easily modified for an electric motor, and they enjoy
cruising down the lake in peace and quiet. The 19 foot boat was christened the “May May”, the nickname of their daughter Meredith, on Tuesday, August 18.

Beginning on September 15, 2014 Lake Lorelei's Activities Club
will offer an excellent opportunity for moderate exercise three
times each week.
All exercises are done while standing up, and each 15 minutes in
class is the equivalent of a one mile walk at a brisk pace, and no
we don't just march around the clubhouse.
The exercises consist of simple done-in-place moves. Moves like
walking in place, stepping side to side, 4 steps forward and then
back, knee raises, kicks, kick backs, and simple arm
movements. However the pace is carefully calculated to
properly warm up and then move the participant into the pace
recommended by many health professionals.
The class begins at 9:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays. Be sure to wear comfortable exercise clothes, shoes,
and bring water or your favorite sport drink.
Children’s Trunk and Treat begins at 6:30 PM
Annual Halloween Party w/ prizes for the best costumes at 7:00 PM
ADULTS, ENJOY HALLOWEEN TREATING FROM THE FUN & SAFETY OF YOUR VEHICLE’S TRUNK
Decorate the trunk of your car and sit back and enjoy treating the “Ghosts, Princesses, Super Heroes, Fairies and Hobgoblins” on Halloween
Night.

Ladies in L.L. Women's Club are looking forward to a fun and productive year.
Our September meeting is our Annual Officer Installation Dinner. It will be catered this year by Sherry Corn of the Tavern. The Honorary Member is also
announced at this meeting.
The Fall Community Yard Sale is October 3rd, 4th, & 5th, so start thinking
about getting your STUFF ready to sell. Our Community Yard Sale is widely advertised, so get signed up.
For our October 2nd Meeting, the Program will be a Fall Decoration Demonstration by Jeff Dye, owner of J.R. Dye Nursery. We appreciate Jeff for
taking time to provide our very interesting program.
At our November 6th Meeting, Kay Mason has agreed to share with us her experiences on her travels to Africa. Over the past several years, Kay and the
group she travels with have done so much for the children in this little village.
They have built a school and provided supplies, food, and clothes. We can not wait to hear what they accomplished this year. Her presentation is always
interesting. She does such a good job.
Lake Lorelei Women’s Club welcomes all “Lake Ladies” interested in joining our
service oriented club to join us on the 1st Thursday night of each month at 7:00 PM.
The 2014-2015 calendar of events looks creative, fun, and a little crazy.

LAKE LORELEI 2015 CALENDAR
The advertised space is completely sold out, distribution is scheduled for December 1, 2014. We are delighted to report that our vendors are offering hundreds of dollars worth
of coupons to encourage your patronization.
DAM POSTS
After 40 years, the posts on our dam and railing on the spillway have deteriorated to the point where they now present a major safety issue. The last thing we want is a
catastrophe such as someone going over the sides of the dam. We are now in the process of getting bids for this project and will keep you informed what our next step will
be.
Thanks to all of you, our beautiful lake is better than ever. There are so many people
that do so many things that we never hear anything about. Just last week a visitor commented how clean the lake was. In spite of the economy, our values are holding up
quite well.
ATTENTION LAKE LORELEI PHOTOGRAPHERS
The time has come to put together the 2015 calendar. There were many great
opportunities for pictures at the lake this year! A committee of PRIDE
members will review and select photos for the calendar.

Trees in Peril By Lee Duncan
Have you noticed the large swaths of our area’s forested hillsides that have dead and dying trees? Every time we drive from our home in Northern Kentucky to Lake Lorelei along I-275, I’m reminded of the problems our urban forest is having.
The main culprit in the demise of all these beautiful trees is the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). This invasive species is believed to have hitched a ride from Asia, where it is native, to Detroit, Michigan in wooden packaging material. It has since spread
throughout Ohio and other Midwestern states, and has already killed over 200 million ash trees.
From my observation, I’d estimate that about five percent of the trees here at the lake
are ash trees, and most of them show signs of EAB infestation. In an infested tree, the top will begin dying back first, then the tree will usually try to compensate by producing
new growth lower on the trunk. By this point, the tree will die within one or two seasons.
Another pest, less widespread but potentially much more damaging, is the Asian
Longhorn Beetle. This invasive insect was first found in the New York City area and also arrived in wooden packing crates. Discovered in Clermont County in 2011, it can kill Maples, Elms, Beech, Sycamores, and many others. Once a tree is infested, there is no
cure. The state has removed more than 40,000 trees, within just a few miles from here, in an effort to eradicate this menace.
Of course, there have always been diseases and insects which attack trees, but the
difference with these threats is that they are non-native. This means that our local trees have very limited defenses. A similar situation occurred 90-odd years ago. There are
“Elm” streets in almost every city in the United States, but hardly any actual Elm trees left! This is because of the accidental introduction of Dutch Elm Disease in the 1920s. (Interestingly, this fungal disease also has its origin in Asia, not Holland.)
So unfortunately, many of you will soon be facing the expense of dealing with dead trees. Now is a good time to plant healthy trees in their stead.
Free (PRIDE) Trees!
In an effort to help keep Lake Lorelei beautiful, PRIDE is offering trees for free to interested
homeowners. These trees are offered in conjunction with the greater Cincinnati “Taking Root”
initiative (www.takingroot.info), which hopes to plant two million trees locally by the year 2020 and to foster a sense of stewardship for our trees.

On Friday, June 27, 2014 LLPOA had the pleasure of hosting ”The 7th Annual Fishing Event”
for families of adults and children with disabilities. This year, the Activities Committee’s “Lighthouse At The Lake,” sponsored the event at LLPOA’s Pavilion and beach facilities,
serving 119 participants! Lead by LLPOA member Shayna Hansel and a host of volunteers, folks with any type of
disability enjoyed a picnic dinner and shoreline fishing. The weather was perfect and the fish were biting! Our thanks to our sponsors: the Ohio Department of Natural Resources
donated a fishing rod for each participant along with the necessary hooks, weights, and bobbers; Kiley’s Market, who sponsored soft drinks; South Shore Marina, of Cowan Lake, that sponsored water and kids’ drinks; Midwest Medical, that sponsored ice and a photographer,
and our BIGGEST sponsor, THE WHOLESALE BAIT CO. that sponsored, food, desserts, bait and t-shirts. In addition, their ENTIRE staff came out to volunteer! A special thanks to LLPOA
member Dorie Charles who donated her lake shore for additional fishing access and ALL THE VOLUNTEERS that helped make this event work.
We are already looking forward to next year’s 8th Annual Fishing Event. If you are interested
in learning more about this event or would like to volunteer, please contact Shayna Hansel @
[email protected] or call 513-252-4367. Come help a special fisherman. It
will be the most rewarding fishing trip that you will take.

Fayetteville-Perry Library Says “Thank You”
On October 6 from 5-8PM, the Fayetteville-Perry Library will be hosting an
Open House for all in the Fayetteville and Lake Lorelei communities to cel-ebrate its Fifteenth Anniversary. Refreshments will be served and mem-
ories will be shared. The library staff wishes to thank the community for
supporting the library by voting for funding, but also by coming to the li-brary to check out books or use the many resources available at the li-
brary.
During this summer, if one walked into the library during the day, one would find not just people perusing the bookshelves, but family programs
taking place, pre-school age activities being held, and adults using com-puters for Internet access. The youth programs alone brought in 350 chil-
dren for programs to help keep their minds active during the summer months. There were reading programs, but there were also activities such
as learning how to make ice cream. (I don’t think a consensus was taken on which they liked more!)
Several Lake Lorelei residents are employed at the library and also are
members of Friends of the Library. New members are always welcome. If
your talents allow you to help plan fundraising events, to work those
events, to solicit donations, to help with mailings, to photograph events,
to write or edit items for a newsletter, to arrange for speaker/author visits
or work at a book sale, please join the Friends of the Library. If you like
to read and discuss what you have read with others, please join the dis-
cussions on either the second Wednesday evening of the month at 7PM or
on the second Thursday at 2PM.

Bald Eagles at Lake Lorelei by Gary Hetzell
What a summer boating season with bald eagles and ospreys filling the skies!
Being an avid birder, I thought I was back on the Snake River in Wyoming where I saw my first bald eagles twenty years ago; but here I am in my own
backyard enjoying this experience.
Here are a few facts about bald eagles:
● The white head and tail do not appear until year 5; juveniles are brown-ish-black for years 1-4.
● They can catch fish weighing up to 4 pounds and still fly. ● The eagles do not start to breed until year 5. Young bald eagles fledge
from the nest around 75 to 80 days but are dependent on mom and dad for another 6 weeks.
● Bald Eagles are potentially long-lived, at up to 28 years in the wild. Most bald eagles mate for life.
● A bald eagle’s territory is up to 10,000 acres.
September—October 2014
The Legend of Lorelei Page 17
The best times for viewing the eagles here at our lake have been morning hours when boat traffic is minimal. We have the perfect habitat to support a
nesting pair-- easy access to fish and large trees for the nest. All of our spottings have been of one adult, plus a juvenile down by the marina on Sat-
urday in late July. There are questions we still do not know:
● Was this juvenile the offspring of the adult eagle we have seen most of the summer?
● Why have we only seen one adult? ● Does our adult here already have a mate and nested nearby?
I am very optimistic that we could have a nesting pair in the coming years
and we might have answers to our bald eagle questions.
Happy birding, neighbors!
Gary Hetzell
***Footnote to Gary’s writing:
Two adult bald eagles were observed flying down the center of the lake the week of August 25-29. Please report sightings and send pictures to

The Sustainability of Lake Lorelei Open Discussions & Reports About Issues That Influence Lake Lorelei
By Olivia Espinoza Water Quality Committee Report
The Water Quality Monitors of Lake Lorelei with the support of the Board of
Trustees and our General Manager have started a lake monitoring program that is continually growing and evolving. Our committee members meet on the first
Monday of every month at 6:00 PM at the Clubhouse. We test the water for E. coli at 7 locations around our main lake and also take secchi disk, water
temperature, water color and water level readings. We are passionate about our lake and keeping a close watch on the health of it.
This summer the E. coli levels at our main beach rose higher than our
standard, which is 235 cfu’s (colony forming units). We go by the same standards as the Ohio Department of Health. We felt as a committee and with the support
of the Board of Trustees that it was best to place an advisory at our main beach. We felt posting an advisory and sending an all-call message to our members was
the best way to inform the community of what was happening. We want our community to protect themselves and their loved ones the best they can. The
advisory for our main beach was lifted after having two consecutive E. coli
readings that were below our standards. This means that the main beach is safe for swimming and other recreational uses.
While the main beach site advisory was not a sign that our lake was in good
health, it did spark a lot of questions and concerns. This we felt was a good sign. We need our members to take a closer look at the one thing that has brought us
all together in this community. As individuals we can make decisions that better the environment around us. We need to keep in mind that runoff from our
properties can carry nutrients (from lawn fertilizers), bacteria (from animal and human waste), pesticides (from lawn and garden chemicals), metals (from
rooftops and roadways), and petroleum by-products (from leaking vehicles) into our lake. These are all things that can be prevented.
We want to encourage any community members to attend our monthly
meetings or even be a part of taking water samples.
Please contact Olivia at 479-409-0235 or via e-mail: [email protected]
for more information.

Letter From The Roads Committee
Compliance Committee
In May of this year, Jimmy Johnson—the current President of the Lake Lorelei Property
Owners Association—agreed that there was a big need for a Compliance Committee within the lake. The Committee wasn’t formed to put burdens on members or to cause
members to be upset. It was formed to help better our community. In the past several years, there has been a decrease in ensuring that lake rules and by-laws are complied with. Unfortunately, if you let one issue go with the “out of sight, out of mind” thought,
the simple, easily rectified violation then starts to turn into several violations that will not be taken care of overnight. This mentality then spreads, and before long, you have
a lot of concerns to deal with. A “cooperative—compliance mentality” not only betters Lake Lorelei, it also brings the morale within the membership up. In turn, better
neighborhood equals a raised value on your main investments—your real estate. This is a win—win situation for all involved.
As some members take great pride with their properties, it isn’t fair for their neighbor to
have nothing said to them if their property is out of compliance. When driving through our community, take a look around and notice the wide array of non-compliance within the membership with the By-Laws, Code of Regulations and Rules. Since the meeting in
May, numerous non-compliant concerns were documented and given to the lake manager for follow up. Roughly 10 concerns a month have been submitted. Those range
from lawn care, boats/boat trailers on vacant lots, buildings never completed, sheds on vacant lots, etc. Since these concerns have been submitted for the office to review, some have been rectified already.
With this, it shows as a whole, the community can work together and become in
compliance. The compliance committee will continue to submit these violations to the
office. If you see any violation or concern you feel needs to be addressed, please
contact Steve in the office and let him know so he can follow up properly.
Well here we are, just a few more weeks and we will be paving the week of the Brown
County Fair. School is out and no school buses will be running that last week of
September.
Please be kind to our contractors. We have to pave to make our roads better. That
means lots of trucks and equipment around our road ways. Please leave earlier—no road
rage.
We have put in some new culverts and fixed roads out front. We have lots of roads to fix
and lots of potholes on back roads. Someday after all the culverts are replaced and road
bases are firm, we won’t have all these bumps. But until then we have to keep on fixing,
paving, patching, graveling, and improving drainage. Like I’ve said before, we will be
paving about two miles and when this is done, we’ll pay cash on the barrel head. We will
own the two miles—we will pay as we go. We will get there.
Thanks for all your support, Allen Williams, 513 Lorelei Dr.

Dear Lake Lorelei Members,
As you take a look around, summer is passing and fall is upon us. We certainly have had a mild summer, but as the temperatures are rising, autumn
will be here quickly and the leaves will begin to change and fall. Much needed work will begin on the roads this next season.
Paving will begin the end of September, while school is out for fair break. Please be patient with the road crew as Lake Lorelei will have another couple
of miles of nicely paved roads. Thanks to all of the road committee members for your hard work and dedication to make Lake Lorelei a better place.
As the boating season ends, it’s that time of year to begin taking boats out for the winter. Remember that the lake valve opens on November 15th and closes
on February 15th. During this time, our members can build/repair docks and shorelines.
I would like to thank all of the committees for their countless hours and dedication, and for our staff and maintenance department for making Lake
Lorelei a wonderful place for all of us.
Thank You,
Jimmy Johnson LLPOA President

On November 15th the valve to the lake will be opened. The goal is to obtain
winter pool by December 15th and maintain as close to that level as possible given weather conditions – often not an easy task. One of several purposes of lowering
lake level is to allow dock maintenance or construction. If you plan on dock construction or maintenance now is the time to plan. Should you need a building permit you will want to apply many weeks before prime construction time.
Will I need a permit? Yes. The application for the permit can be found on the
lake website, at “governing documents” under “other useful information.” This form should be filled out and a diagram of the proposed dock together with a surveyed or platted site plan provided.
Do I need a permit for existing dock maintenance? No. A new dock requires
a permit. Changing a current dock’s orientation or footprint will require a permit. If in doubt, ask the office.
What are the rules? (Rules Section 5, paragraph B, subparagraph 9) “decks and docks over the water shall not extend more than twenty (20) feet into the lake
from the normal waterline on the recorded plats. Canopies or coverings over decks or docks within fifty (50) feet of the normal waterline are prohibited.” Additionally
subparagraphs 10 and 11 describe requirements for proposals to build docks on association owned property.
What is the procedure? Once submitted, the application will go to the property inspector who will verify the plan is in keeping with covenants and
restrictions and rules. Once approved by the inspector, it goes to the board of trustees for approval. Once the board approves, a permit is issue and work may begin. Expect this to take several weeks.
Does it cost anything? Yes. A dock building permit costs $50. The money
remitted goes to the road assessment account and can only be spent on road improvement.
The key to an effective and pleasant experience in building or expanding a dock is prior planning and submitting plans in advance with plenty of time. The
office stands ready to assist you in this process.

Olivia Espinoza spoke on water quality. The committee has been taking sample since the 1st of May. A number of the water quality committee members have become qualified data gatherers. The committee intends on making regular
sample collections from 7 established locations. Testing at the north end of the beach came back high and was retested again as elevated (1200+ count /Mil – 268 and below is considered normal) for eColi. The committee hopes to raise the water quality awareness of members and currently note that only the beach sites have tested high. Signs are being made to inform swimmers of the conditions. The committee is searching for a lab to do more detail testing on eColi beyond the Clermont County lab testing normally does. The committee collects samples on the first Monday of the month and then meets 6pm the same day.
Much discussion ensued about finding the test lab to find the reason for the elevated eColi levels. Goose and Human
waste are suspected causes of the higher eColi levels, but until we can get the improved testing it’s all speculation.
ODNR permit is good to remove 16 more geese from the lake at this time. – Geo Mason.
