Tey did so with the impetus o aninitial promise rom a class donorwho chooses to remain anonymous,

to match classmate donations upto $1,000. With that jump start theclass surpassed its goal o $3,000 byraising a total o $5,000 that week.

I dont think any other class hasmatched that during a week and wedlike to challenge the other classes totry and beat our total, Marlow toldus as we met or a photo op o theClass o 57 check presentation toEndowment Chairman Doug Stan-ley at the Warren County Govern-ment Center.

    ALONG THESE LINES

Why did the chicken cross the road?

    By Nick Tomas

Apparently, i youre six years old, to get to theother side is an acceptable and singularly humor-ous answer to this age-old question which seems todate rom a New York magazine article publishedaround 1850.

Te answer may also depend upon whomyou ask. So, i some well-known personali-ties were asked Why did the chicken cross theroad? they might respond along these lines:Dick Cheney: It was eeing rom me. I tried towing it with my AK-47, but took out the KFC signhal a mile down the road instead.George W. Bush: I dont know about things likethat - Laura doesnt let me cross the road alone. But I hope the poor chicken doesnt misunderesti-mate the trac.Al Gore: I invented the chicken.

Ron Paul: Tats none o our concern. Chickensshould be ree to cross roads without governmentintervention.Sarah Palin: Fry baby, ry!Arnold Schwarzenegger: I dont know the an-swer, but I can tell its a girlie chicken by the wayit walks.Michael Moore: Ater being conned, abused, and repressed by capitalistic poultry armers, thechicken was escaping to reedom, to star in mynew movie Eggo.Paris Hilton: Just because Im, like, umm, gor-geous and an heiress, I still have my own viewsabout chickens and roads. Let me check with my

agent to see what I think.Lindsay Lohan: It crossed? Dang, I must havemissed it.Charlie Sheen: Winging!

David Letterman: And the number one reasonthe chicken crossed the road it was eeing whenit saw this weeks CBS ratings.Dr. Phil: Te issue is not why the chicken is cross-ing, by why were enabling it to engage in risky ac-tivities.Samuel L. Jackson: Clearly, this is one dumbmother clucker.Darth Vader: It was crossing over to the Dark Side.May the sauce be with you.Bill Gates: In this age, we shouldnt have to worryabout real chickens and potential poultry highwaycarnage. Te next version o Windows will eaturean app where a virtual chicken can saely crosssimulated roads.Te United Nations: We will send a team o poul-try inspectors to the road site in question and de-termine i a crossing is viable. Ten we will orma committee to determine i the chicken crossing

should be internationally sanctioned. Tis maytake or 3 years at which time we will make anunenorceable recommendation.Woody Allen: I cant look at chickens. I get theurge to move to Rhode Island.Superman: It was my ellow crime ghter SuperChicken, in disguise as Cluck Kent.Mel Gibson: Bloody chickens! Teyre responsibleor all the bad eggs in this world.Martha Stewart: It was trying to escape my crock-pot. I wanted it or a recipe I was testing or mynew book, Cooking with Conviction.Pat Robertson: Only the good Lord knows. Butthis is typical o liberal, eminist poultry that are

clearly being tempted by the devil ttheir homes and amily. Repent, chiwill appear in the orm o a speeding strike you down.

iger Woods: It was probably scaredto hit a lot o birdies and eagles.Kirstie Alley: Because I was chasTree words: Chicken Pot Pie.William Shatner: ChicKHAAAAADeForest Kelley: I dont know, Im a chicken plucker. Wait! Look out ono... hes dead, Jim.Dr. Suess: I do not like chickens on tI do not like them with a toadI do not like them with green beansI do not like them with collard greenI do not like them in my commode.Steven Wright: I met this grouchthe side o the road today. I think it wDonald rump: Youre ried!Bill OReilly: It was walking in my Nand I hit it. Stupid chicken! Okay, sunion-loving, veggo, anti-gun totting

Lets start with a act: On November

16, the Israeli Air Force bombed the10,000-seat Palestine Stadium intoruins. Te stadium also headquar-tered the center or youth sports pro-grams throughout the Gaza Strip. Tisis the second time Israel has attenedthe acility. Te rst was in 006 andthe people o Gaza have spent the lastsix years rebuilding the elds, stands, and oces to keep the national soccerteam as well as club sports alive in theregion.

Im sure the reaction to this actwill depend on what side people takein the current conict. For the Israeligovernment and their supporters, they promised collective punish-ment ollowing the Hamas rocketsred over the border and they are

delivering collective punishment.Matan Vilnai, deputy deense ministero Israel has in the past threatened aholocaust and Gilad Sharon, son oormer Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, called or Gaza to be the new Hiro-shima. In this context, a sports acil-ity must seem like little more thantarget practice.

For those attending daily demon-strations against the carnage, thisnews o a stadiums destruction mustalso be seen as an irrelevancy. Aterall, according to Te Wall Street Jour-

nal, 90 Palestinians, including 50 ci-vilians, have been killed in Gaza; 5children are among the more than 700

injured and these numbers are climb-ing as I write. Israeli ground troopsare massing at the border and Presi-dent Obama can only bring himsel todeend Israel without criticism. Tereis only so much concern or a stadiumpeople can be expected to muster.

I think however that we should alltake a moment to ask the question,Why?

Why has the Palestinian sports in-rastructure, not to mention Palestin-ian athletes, always been a target othe Israeli military?

Why has the Palestinian domesticsoccer league only completed sevenseasons since its ounding in 1977?

Why are players commonly subject-ed to harassment and violence, not to

mention curews, checkpoints, andall sorts o legal restrictions on theirmovement?

Why were national team players Ay-man Alkurd, Shadi Sbakhe and WajehMoshate killed by the Israeli DeenseForces during the 009 military cam-paign?

Why did imprisoned national teamplayer Mahmoud Sarsak require ahunger strike, the international soli-darity campaign o Amnesty Interna-tional, and a ormal protest rom bothFIFA and the 50,000-player soccer

union FIFpro to just to win his ree-dom ater three years behind bars?

    Te answer is simple.

Sports is more than loved in Gaza(and it is loved.) Its an expression ohumanity or those living under oc-cupation. Its not just soccer and itsnot just the boys. Everyone plays, with handball, volleyball, and basket-ball joining soccer as the most popu-lar choices. o have several thousandpeople gather to watch a girls sportingevent is a way o lie. Its a community

event designed not onlon the eld, but chestands. As one Palesti

Gaza said to me, [Spoto orget where we arewho we are.

Attacking the athlture is about attackin

nationally and at home. Te only waythe Israeli government and its alliescan continue to act with such brazendisregard or civilian lie is i they con-

vince the world that their adversariescollectively are less than human. Tesubway ads calling Muslims savages,

the Islamophobic cartoons and videosthat are held up as examples o reespeech, are all part o a quilt that says

some deaths are not to be mourned. At home, attacking sports is about

nothing less than killing hope. Israelstotal war, underwritten by the UnitedStates, is a war not only on Hamasor military installations but on theidea that lie can ever be so careree

in Gaza as to involve play. Te objec-tive instead, is to hear these words oa young girl outside Al Shia Hospital

on November 18th who said, o theworld and people: Why should we bekilled and why shouldnt we have anormal childhood? What did we do toace all this?

I you play, you can dream. I youdream, you are imagining a better

world. As the great Olympian WilmaRudolph said, Never underestimatethe power o dreams and the inuence

o the human spirit. Te potential orgreatness lives within each o us.

Nothing marks the nihilism oIsraels project quite like this act:they dont want the people o Gazato dream. In the eyes o BenjaminNetanyahu, they are only worthy o

    nightmares.

Speakers at the 01 local remem-brance o Veterans Day reminded usthat this Nov. 11 holiday began as Ar-mistice Day commemorating the endo what was believed to be the warto end all wars World War I.

Tat belie that war could no lon-ger be the solution to national, reli-gious or secular disputes was due tothe historically unprecedented death, destruction and human carnage themodern technology o 1914-1917brought to bear on violent humanconict.

For some reason, as one speakernoted, in 196 Congress decidedto rename Armistice Day, VeteransDay, ocusing on the heroic sacriceo the soldier, but without the addednotion o trying to move beyond the

Te bridge, according to reli-able engineers, cannot be repairedand due to its current conditionis high on VDOs replacementpriority list. So the question is,do you replace it with a two-lanebridge as presented by VDO or

    By Leslie FiddlerWarren County Report

Conservation scientist BillMcShea spoke about Deer asCritical Architects o the For-est at the Beautication o FrontRoyal Committees recent annualscholarship luncheon. McSheascredentials include wildlie ecol-ogist, computational biologistand member o the internationalcommittee charged with over-sight o the worlds deer popula-tions. His good natured, casualdemeanor and disarming presen-

tation created an immediate rap-port with the audience.

McShea began with an over-view o deer populations. He said

that there are 50 species o deerin the world, with a third o thoseendangered. In the 1800s Virgin-ias deer were rare too becauselocal game was a popular res-taurant dish. Ten in the 190sand 30s wildlie agencies pio-neered species restoration. Deerwere shipped rom Arkansas toShenandoah National Park in the1930s and 40s and the white taildeer population rebounded. o-day, even though its habitat hasdeclined, the North Americanwhite tailed deer is more abun-dant than 00 years ago - 35 mil-

lion deer today compared to 15- 0 million deer then.

Deer are the orests chie ar-chitects and engineers McShea

stated, and as an example de-scribed the impact o deer on mi-gratory birds and small mammalpopulations. Specically, deereat birds nesting vegetation, sothere are ewer birds. Deer alsosuccessully compete or acornswith small mammals. With ewersmall mammals hawks start eat-ing small birds. Deer also aectinvasive plant species by clearingout natives and turning over lealitter. McShea described deer asdisturbance agents responsibleor a loss o diversity and oster-ing the invasion o exotic plantsand animals.

McShea pronounced contem-porary Virginia as deer heavenwith its orest edges, corn eldsand landscaping. Dogs andences are the best controls hesaid, while adding that a prop-erty owners deer control is onlyas good as their neighbors. Goodmanagement happens at thecommunity level... We have totake ownership o the deer.

I think that densities need tobe brought down with a goal oincreasing diversity. McShea sit-ed the states hunting programs, including urban hunts, as posi-tive steps. However, they are lim-

ited by a reliance ohunters home reeand, in the case o HHungry, processingper deer.

Ater the talk thisMcShea what he elwas. He replied thdense deer populaprivate land and tpartnerships betwand private land ohelp curb the probsuggested an increaged urban hunts.
