Presenter
Presentation Notes
Good Afternoon, I am Amy Meyer, Vice President of Kohler (Manufacturing) Operating Systems and Supply Chain. I also have the pleasure of running our India Technical Center of about 80 engineers, and my favorite of all, our Machine Build and Process Automation team where we build custom equipment for our internal operations. I work for Kohler, a 143 year old privately owned Company in Kohler Wisconsin. We have been bold in Kitchen and Bath design since 1873, electric generator manufacturers since 1920, gasoline and diesel engine manufacturers since 1924. We are also in the furniture business with the Baker and McGuire brands, custom tile business as Ann Sachs, and various Hospitality businesses, The 5 diamond American Club Resort in Wisconsin, the Hotel on the Old Course in St. Andrews Scotland, and award winning championship golf courses, including Whistling Straits, where tournaments like the 2015 PGA Championship were played and the 2020 Ryder Cup will be played. And you thought that all Kohler did was make spectacular toilets, sinks and faucets…

Dare to Lead

Presentation Notes
I am honored to be here. It’s captivating to be in a room full of Women in Manufacturing. Honestly, I was a bit nervous to speak to this group of professional women. I am well equipped to talk to a room full of male executives, that is the norm in many manufacturing companies today. But here, I have to talk to a conference room full of very talented women. It’s a bit intimidating… Especially when it is women who are willing to walk on treacherous ground every single day. The world of manufacturing is less then gentle at times. Look around. There are Women in this room who Dare to Lead…. But before we get to that….. Just as a warning, I will be asking many questions today and hanging out up here sweating bullets waiting for you to respond, so please, be kind and play along…. I do understand the lunch load you are carrying, so interaction will help with that. The preverbial Win-Win. First of all let’s find out if there are aspirations in the room.

MMS

Women of Aspiration?

How many of you do NOT lead today, but aspire to?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Are you ready to Lead? What do you think that you will have to give up in order to lead? What have you already had to give up to lead? Anything? And you still want to lead??? Do you …… ??? (next slide)

Dare to Lead

In Manufacturing

What does that look like for you? What do you think you need to do to get ready? From what I have heard during this conference, there are plenty of mentors in the audience. What wisdom do we already possess in the room?

MMS

Women of Conviction

For those who already Lead:

• How many years?• What do you enjoy?

– Growing Leaders– Helping teams form, gel and succeed– Helping the less confident people realize a level of performance

that they never thought they possessed– Solving crushingly, difficult problems– Planning at a high level and inspiring other associates to follow

your lead to exceptional performance– Setting future strategy and aspirational goals

Presenter

Do you still enjoy it all of the time? Or in small pockets?

Presentation Notes
I love strategy, and even more, I love envisioning the path to success. I get completely fired up by this. There is no magic here. Just clear vision, deliberate execution, and respectful, engaging leadership. I know what this will look like in 2020!!! I can see it!

2020 is Mine to Master!

2020

Presenter
Presentation Notes
At this point, I want to do high fives, ah fist bumps, chest bumps…. Whatever the manly cohort does to celebrate…. Drink beer, maybe do shots of tequila with lime…. In reality, at this point in my life, I will typically have a nice dinner with my husband, maybe a glass of wine, head home, relax, and then slip into blissful sleep. But behind the scenes… WHAM!!!

MMS

It’s 2020!

I fell asleepand

I’m drooling on my deskand

there is a pop quiz today on my Strategic Plan, and the CEO hates blue font!

Presenter
Presentation Notes
I wake up sweating and can barely breathe. It’s the DREAM again. Ok, I’m safe, I’m home. But now I am wide awake and my brain is in full work mode. And, I am at home…….

External Perception – What the world thinksand assumesShe should be… She should do...

External Observation – What the world sees that you have or have not done in the pastShe should have…

Internal – Jr. Employee tape, ‘You’re going to screw this up’I should do… I can’t do…

Home is where the truth leaks out.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Home is often where the truth leaks out, even if it is in our dreams. My Jr. VP tape says “ you are no good. You’ve just been lucky the last 26 years. You are on the verge of failure.” Professionally, we are driven to improve every day, or at least we think we should be driven to improve every day. We are vulnerable. But we will come back to that. So what do you do? How do you deal with the noise in your head? Like Russell Crowe from Beautiful Mind (bring your voices with you?) Do you know how to quiet the noise each day? How do you prepare for each day?

MMS

What is your morning routine?

• Put on your Game Face• Apply Mental Kevlar• Fake It until you Make It

– Confidence• You start the day with perfection in mind

• And there you are, in control, and ready for another successful day.

11

Presenter
Presentation Notes
I’m not talking about what goes on in front of the mirror. I mean your routine after the one where you turn your bed head into the Epitome of Spectacular. You put on your Game Face, You lather on your emotion blocking Mental Kevlar You sprinkle yourself with Fake It dust And there you have it. You are back in CONTROL, and you Dare to Lead in Manufacturing.

MMS

Have you unlocked Success?

12

You have had many successes

Countless individual events that have brought you happiness

Occasions where you achieved brief and fleeting moments of joy

You are mastering a tough career

Sure you have made some compromises, but the price for success has never been too high

• Me at work vs. Me at home• It is exhausting to make the transition

every morning and every night

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The price of success has never been too high. You have never compromised your integrity. But be very careful of the brand of success that you have purchased. Who are you now? Transition to - Me at work… The danger to yourself and your career, is that you will stop making the transition, and stay trapped in Me At Work. Or you will stop the transition and stay trapped in Me At Home. Or you will transition every single day for the rest of your exhausting but successful career, but to what end? Let’s go back and look at our Morning routine …

MMS

Is your morning routine effective?

• Put on your game face– Work is not a game. When can you take it off?

• Apply Mental Kevlar– Blocking emotion is non-discriminatory. Everything is blocked.

• Fake it until you make it– Removing the costume reveals the truth and the flaws. You

leave it on out of fear

13

Presenter
Presentation Notes
You put on your Game Face, but the Game never ends…. So when can you take it off? When does your emotion blocking Mental Kevlar get removed? I put mine on one day, and I realized eighteen years later that it was still on, at work and at home. It is non-discriminatory. It blocks emotion just like you need it to, but it blocks all emotion, and feeling, and empathy: the good and the bad. It turns you, the You at Home, off. Your spouse, kids, family, friends, they all get the Work version…. When do you stop Faking it? Once you have created a false version of you, you cannot take off the costume. You force yourself to live up to the vision of perfection that you have created. Believe it or not, there are probably a few of us here in the room that are using chemicals to hide our gray hair. What else are we hiding? Women who Lead In Manufacturing, and, Men who Lead in Manufacturing, what can we communicate to those who aspire to our positions? How do you get yourself and those around you off of the survival treadmill and onto a path of joy? Do you even believe that Joy is attainable? How can we truly help them to be more than successful at work?

MMSDo you have the Courage to Share your personal Failures?

If fear of failure (embarrassment, humiliation) is our enemy

Then, expecting perfection, in ourselves or others, is also our enemy

Perfectionism will lead us to a compromise in Authenticity You can not be perfect

You will make mistakes

You will bury your mistakes, or downplay them, and never learn

You will compromise your Authenticity

So WHAT?

14

Without Authenticity, there cannot be Joy

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Fear of FAILURE is our enemy, Not, Fear. So what if you compromise your Authenticity? I am not talking about your integrity. Authenticity is the difference between who you are and who you think you have to be to maintain success. If we fear our failures and hide them, there is no learning for us or for those around us, but there is far more than the loss of knowledge or Continuous Improvement at stake here. Because without Authenticity, there cannot be joy. So what? I never expected to have Joy anyway. Joy is a myth and is only for people who don’t have a serious, demanding job.

MMS

Unlocking Joy

Authenticity creates Joy

Authenticity requires vulnerabilityVulnerability is not weakness 1

Vulnerability is the most accurate measure of courage 1

Authenticity requires vocabulary I don’t agree

I don’t understand

I need help

15

1 Brene Brown - TED talks: Vulnerability, Shame

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Stating it again, Joy is the result of Authenticity Authenticity requires vulnerability. Authenticity is NOT ‘screw you, I’m doing what I want’. That is rudeness and is often confused with being Direct. I can be direct and respectful. Authenticity requires a different vocabulary’ than we typically hear in Manufacturing. Another of my favorites from Bren’e Brown’s TED talks is “Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.” How many leaders do you know who are desperately searching for innovation, creativity and change in their workplace???

MMS

Stop listening to the Jr. Employee tapes that paralyze you with fear of failure

Give yourself a pass on perfection, but never on integrity

Stop getting stuck on control

Move your focus to quieting your mind and minding your body - MMS

(Meditate – Move – Sleep)

Dare to be Authentic, it will bring Joy But the price is vulnerability

Dare to allow those around you to be Authentic

Dare be Vulnerable

Joy is real. You must change to find it and to keep it.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
My Jr. VP tape says “ you are no good. You’ve just been lucky the last 26 years. You are on the verge of failure.” Destroy the notion that perfection exists in people. We can all do perfect things, but we need to embrace that mistakes will happen, and embrace that it is the lesson, not who caused it, that is important. Ask Why, not Who! There are circumstances that will happen every single day that you cannot anticipate or control. Yes, you do need to prepare for What If Situations, but do not ever let yourself believe that you can control them. Your Authenticity will be compromised. Well-being starts in your head. Learn how to quiet your mind. You cannot stop the guys in the basement from playing random tapes, but you can choose to ignore them and focus elsewhere. Learn how to mind your body. Move and Sleep. Dare to be Authentic? It WILL bring Joy. But, the PRICE is VULNERABILTY. Say good bye to being perfect. You aren’t anyway, but its easier to think that you are. I understand that… And now for the tough part…. Dare to allow those around you to be Authentic. Be a coach, not a critic.

MMS

Dare to Lead with Joy

In the world of manufacturing, the tough survive, but they rarely thrive.

Perhaps it is time to lift yourself, your team and your organization out of the world of management by fear and

intimidation. It may be the right time for a significantly more balanced approach to driving results. It is possible to lead your organization to higher levels of performance and yet,

actually enable joy in yourself, your team and your organization.

Dare to be Authentic! 17
