Cambridgeshire Cross Country
Championships – Saturday 14th January
2012
The Cambridgeshire Schools Cross Country
Championships were held at King’s Ely Schools on Sat-
urday 14th January 2012. When we arrived the
ground was white and completely frozen, however
the sun was out and by the first race it had started to
thaw. The event has the top 16 runners from four
areas within Cambridgeshire, 26 King’s Schools pupils
took part on the day, a few that had been selected
could not take part. As the day went on the ground
became softer and in places quite slippery but it was
perfect conditions for cross country running.
From this event athletes are selected to represent
Cambridgeshire at the Anglian Schools Cross Country
Championships, to be selected athletes had to finish in
the top 10.
There were some outstanding performances, Ollie
Bowling and James Barkshire finished 4th and 5th
respectively in the Junior Boys( Year 8 +9), both in
Year 8 and will have another year to compete in this
age group.
In the Senior Girls, Emma Randall finished 2nd and
Eleanor Smith 3rd with Penny Ford 6th and so all
three qualified along with Callum Reid and Henry
Morton who finished 9th and 10th respectively in the
senior boys.

selected, the Anglian Championships will be held in
Ipswich on Saturday 4th February 2012

gymnastic competitions taking place this term. Gymnastic classes take
place in the sports hall on Tuesday evenings from 4-6pm.

Rowing Challenge – Monday 23rd Jan at Hampton
College
We have recently been attending some of the Rowing Competition that are held
throughout the year. The most recent was held at Hampton, it was split into two age
groups, Year7/8 and Year 9/10. The Year 7/8’s rowed for 2 minutes trying to cover as
great a distance as possible whilst the Year 9/10 rowed a distance of 1000m’s in the
shortest time.
The second part of the competition was a relay in teams of four covering 2012m, we
had a group of year 7 girls and a group from Year 9. The Year 7 girls finished 2nd and
the Year 9 mixed team 4th.
In the individual challenges the Year 7 girls rowed exceptionally well with very high
score for the 2 minute event. Overall the Kings Schools has now moved up into 3rd
position and we hope to build on this.
Jack Hunt Rowing Competition– Monday 26th March
Report by Sophie Hobday
In rowing this season we have seen an ever growing improvement with the results.
Starting off with only a very small year 7 team it has grown into a stronger team
espically with year 7 girls and year 9 boys and girls! The year 7 girls have been the
most consistent attendening with a massive improvement, the most shown by Jassica
Enum with the top score from the group. The Year 7 girls team includes Sophie
Hobday, Jassica Enum, Tomi Kehinde, Martha Page and Amy van Dogen. In relays we
have been very successful as we have been finsihing as one of the first couple of
schools even though we only have girls and no boys in the team and we have all had
a good laugh at each other getting off the machine! We all have had a fun time doing
the events and are looking forward to the events in the future!
Rowing Trampolining
Trampolining
Matthew Gladders and Luke Hagerty represented King's at the British National Schools
trampoline finals today, accompanied by Ann and Kevin Gladders and Brian McGeeney in a
coaching capacity. Matthew achieved 7th place in the Elite Under 19 Boys competition and Luke
4th place in the U15 Boys Standard competition. To reach this level, both have had to achieve top
3 individual positions in their age groups at preceding regional and zonal competitions.
This achievement shows the talent and hard work the boys put in on a regular basis, and it is
good to see such strong achievement for the school at the highest level of school competition.

International Hockey Visit– Build up to the Olympics
20 Year 7 and 8 pupils took part in an “ In2Hockey” Session held at The
Voyager School on Friday 9th March. They were joined by Jack Hunt, The
Peterborough School, Nene Park Academy, AMVC and TDA.
Chloe Rogers, International hockey player, greeted the pupils and they spent
the morning taking part in coaching sessions with her. During lunch, she
spoke about her achievements and hopes for the Olympics whilst showing
some of the medals she had won. All pupils were given a small signed stick
and hockey ball.
The day finished with a hockey tournament to put the new skills learnt into
practice. This was a valuable experience for all pupils involved, they had
access to high quality coaching and an excellent promotional event to inspire
all to support GB hockey in the Olympics.

Thomas Deacon’s Academy 1st XI 9-1 The King’s (The Cathedral) School 1st IX
(King’s goal from Chris Wood)
The much anticipated game against local rivals TDA was hard fought on enemy
territory, especially due to the two man disadvantage verses the national
school final’s runner ups.
Despite the majority of ball possession in the opening phases going in favour
of TDA, the King’s defence held firm with a formation that proved difficult for
the prowess of the opponents to break down. The opening exchanges weren’t
one way, with our midfield and forward forcing mistakes in their
overconfident defence, however a lack of numbers showed costly as options
were limited and attacks broke down. Reduced numbers also left the King’s
defence exposed on counter attacks. Despite a well-defended short corner,
the defensive formation of King’s was broken midway through the half and a
dip in confidence and concentration led to a few more goals before the break.
A tactical half time switch between defending debutant Wood and forward
Caruso provided the defence with more level-headed experience. The away
team pushed for a goal which, combined with mistakes, gifted TDA with goals
as well as well rehearsed and efficient short corner routines. The continued
battling for a goal forced the ball into the home team territory, and link up
play from Yau and Davies resulted in the last goal of the game from Wood .
King’s showed heart in this always impossible fixture and look to use the
experience in future fixtures.
Maxifuel Super sixes Indoor Hockey
Trip to Wembley Arena
The 2011 super sixes Finals were played out in dra-
matic fashion in front of a near full house of 5000
hockey fans at the iconic Wembley Arena on Sunday
30th January. Out of these 5000 passionate hockey
fans were 48 King’s pupils ranging from Years 7-13
and 6 members of staff.
The format of the day consisted of 3 men’s matches
and 1 women’s finals. The first semi-final saw East
Grinstead V Old Loughtonians with an 8-3 result. The
second men’s semi final was against Reading and
Beeston with a score of 3-3 leading into a very nail
biting penalty flick competition. Beeston came victo-
rious with a 2-1 lead. The Men’s final was against
East Grinstead v Beeston with a 8-5 victory for East
Grinstead . The women’s final was against Bowdon
High town v Reading with similar to the men’s game
a 5-5 score line leading to penalty flicks. Bowdon
Hightown's women and East Grinstead's men were
crowned champions on the day, overcoming strong
opposition to lift the coveted trophies.
In between games there were activities planned to
inspire our up and coming hockey players with beat
the goalie, a blow up relay race, video presentations
and numerous merchandising stalls. This is our
second visit to the indoor competition as has certain-
ly gathered interest for Miss Naismith’s indoor hock-
ey sessions on Wednesday mornings.

Mrs Amps and Miss Naismith are running the London Marathon and would like to raise as much money for HOPE
FOR CHILDREN. The charity was founded in 1994 as a non-religious, non-sectarian, non-profit making organisa-
tion. It stands for Helping disabled, Orphaned, Poor and Exploited children, in particular those living in developing
countries as well as the UK.
The week after the London Marathon, Mr Harrison will be running the Milton Keynes Marathon also.
Please go to http://www.justgiving.com/KingsPeterborough to donate money to this very worthy cause.
Many thanks

Zara Bailey-Swimming
Again in July this year Zara will be attending the National Swimming Tournament.
It is hoped that there is a chance she will qualify for the Olympics before this. She
needs to take part in two very high profile competitions to try to achieve the
qualifying time. This year she has already attended the British Olympic Trials
where she achieved a 2 second PB in the 200IM. She needs another second off to
have achieved the Olympic Consideration Time. She is also trying for her 400IM
time. Once the Olympics are over she will be working towards the World Short
Course Championships in Istanbul, December 2012.
Lizzie Pam– Tennis
Lizzie is a year 8 pupil at Kings. She has been playing tennis since
the age of 6 and now has developed into an elite performer.
Lizzie trains 4 times a week in Cambridge and Peterborough.
Sessions consist of fitness, endurance and speed, as well as
technical and tactical training. Currently Lizzie is ranked 52nd in
the 14 and under age group for the country. Previously she had
an LTA rating of 18 in the U12 age group. She has a busy tennis
season ahead with competitions including a National Competi-
tion in Nottingham over Easter and regional events over the
summer.
Last summer Lizzie experienced her most successful season with
winning results in the Donarbon Tournament, Cambridge and the
Cambridge Closed. Lizzie also got to the final at Letchworth to
narrowly miss out on another trophy.
Lizzie is currently balancing her school commitments with
training. We hope to see her competing for school this season.

On Wednesday 21st of March at 2.15pm the sixth form flocked to the sports
field to observe the annual rugby match between the year 13’s and the year
12’s. The battle began weeks before kick-off, with the verbal competition flying
across the common room. The favour was firmly with the Year 13’s as they con-
tained 19 out of 22 players in the school’s first team. When the day of the
match came there were many worried faces on the supporters; for the lives of
the members of the Year 12’s team. The game got underway and the year 12’s
set a statement of intent in the first few seconds, with Rob Strong and Henry
Morton putting in firm tackles. There was shock in the Year 13’s ranks; as they
were not expecting the fearsome defence and organisation that came against
them. The Year 12’s managed to put themselves into the lead with two penal-
ties and went up 6-0. The 13’s came back and scored a try through Jack Thorn-
dike but failed to convert, so the 12’s, to their growing confidence were still
ahead 6-5.
The defence of both sides held strong with occasional bursts through the mid-
field from Phil Trotman and Mikey Harris, with Year 12’s bouncing off them left,
right and centre. Tempers occasionally broke as the passionate hunt to become
the Charities Match Champions was hotly contested. As half time arrived the
13’s had broken ahead with a couple of tries and the 12’s found themselves go-
ing in 19-9 down. But that was a far better score than anyone had been ex-
pecting, the predicted cricket score was firmly in the back of their minds.
Charity Rugby
The second half began similarly to the first, with strong defence from both
teams. But as the half grew on the experience of the 13’s held them strong
and as the teams tired in the extreme heat of the day the score began to run
away in favour of the year 13’s with some well worked tries. The score ended
up 31-12 to the Year 13’s. But a good contest and great spectacle for all who
came to watch. Bring on next year!!
