Lenten Worship
In celebration of Reformation 500, this year’s midweek Lenten services will focus
on the various parts of Luther’s Small Catechism. The Greek word katecho means
to sound again or from above, and this type of Christian instruction (“repeat after
me”) was already being used in the earliest days of the Christian church. Luther
used various parts of the catechism in his preaching even before the Reformation,
and began to write the Small and Large Catechisms in the late 1520s as a response
to the “spiritual distress” observed in many parishes. Consider the Catechism as
an introduction to Scripture. During Lent, we will be hearing again and learning
the 5 essential parts of the Small Catechism: 10 Commandments, Apostles Creed,
Lord’s Prayer and the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. Once again,
we will be worshipping using Holden Evening Prayer, and welcoming visiting
pastors from our sister churches of Bethlehem, Grace, Messiah, Epiphany (Eagle
Lake) and Redeemer (Good Thunder). Services will be at 5:00 and 6:00pm begin-
ning on Ash Wednesday, March 1.
All those wishing to become members of Christ the King are encouraged to attend
our New Member Orientation on Thursday, March 30 at 6:00pm. We will receive
new members into our congregation on Palm Sunday, April 9 at the 8:15am
worship service. Registration will be available online. Please contact Membership
Ambassador, Amy Olsen if you have questions.

Spring Hymn Festival
Christ the King will host a hymn festival on Friday, April 7. The festival will
begin in the Worship Center with Evensong at 4:45pm, followed by a table
talk dinner, and concluding with performances featuring guest organist
David Cherwien and the CTK Worship Choir. More details to come!
The Annual Ash Wednesday Soup Supper will be
held on Wednesday, March 1 from 5:00-6:00pm!

Community
Do you ever wonder why church is a part of your life? We know that for many who say they believe,
church is no longer something in which they participate. So “why church”?
While many would like to think that church is optional for a life of faith, many more would disagree,
including the apostle Paul. We’ve just wrapped up a sermon series on Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians,
and in this letter as well as many others, Paul strives to impress upon his hearers the importance of
community. And when you scrape away the layers of building and institution and structure, in the end,
church is about being in community with one another. The fact of the matter is this: we cannot be people
of faith by ourselves. We need one another to be people of faith. We need community. Our God is a
communal God, and God’s presence is best known within gathered community.
In his book “Living Together,” Dietrich Bonhoeffer says, “It is by God’s grace that a congregation is
permitted to gather visibly around God’s word and sacrament in this world. Not all Christians partake of
this grace.” Community is a gift of God; but how often do we think about it in this way? In speaking
about community as gift, Bonhoeffer tells us that we need each other for the sake of Jesus Christ. We
cannot be made holy on our own, or live by our own resources. Nor can we hear the Word of God on
our own. Hearing and discerning scripture is also a communal activity; we need others to speak God’s
Word to us and they need us to speak to them.
We also come to one another through Jesus Christ, another communal activity, as we come into
relationship with one another. Christ binds us together. Without Christ as our mediator, there is discord
between God and humanity and between one another. The only way we come to know one another is by
being in relationship with one another – and relationships come through community; especially, a
community built on the foundation of Jesus Christ.
Finally, Bonhoeffer says that we need Christian community because we have been chosen by Christ.
We are in him, and where he is we are too – we are a part of the incarnation, the cross, the resurrection.
Paul says it this way – “so let no one boast about human leaders – for all things are yours, whether Paul
or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future – all belong to you, and
you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.”
What’s it all mean? It means that we need community, each other, to find Christ and to see Christ and
to be Christ with one another. In other words, we need one another in order to live into our own faith.
And community is also where we come to be fed, not just by God’s Word, but through song and the
sacraments as well. And once we are fed and strengthened by community, by one another, we can then
go out and share God’s grace with others – to those who need a word of encouragement, to those who
do not know Christ, to those who say they no longer believe. Why church? Why community? Because
you need others, and others need you. This is a gift from God, and this is where God’s presence dwells
mightily; in the gathered community of believers.

Mission Trip to Chile
A trip to visit the missionary we sponsor in Chile is scheduled for Thanksgiving break. Missionary Karen
Anderson (originally from Owatonna) started a medical mission to provide health care and education to
poor women and children in Chile in 1982. We will accompany others from Trinity Lutheran in Owatonna
from November 17-26 to learn more about this ministry and the Chilean culture primarily in Santiago and
Conception. An informational meeting will be held in the Fireside Room at 9:30AM on Sunday, March 5.
For more information, please see Pastor Patrick or Nancy Patterson from the Justice & Peace Commission.

coming Lenten and Easter season. The piece is by Northfield artist Lucky Rimpila and will be on
display beginning February 22nd. It’s beauty is sure to enhance our worship space. Lucky offers us this
opportunity to enjoy his art free of charge. Thanks to Matt Norland for pursuing this opportunity for us.

Reformation 500—Women and the Reformation
“I am prepared to lose everything, even life or limb. May God stand by me.” Argula von Grumbach.
Protestant principles inspired women just like men to reengage Christian faith and find renewed spiritual
meaning in their daily vocations. For women, the reform offered mixed results. While women lost the
monastic option as convents were closed in Protestant areas, they benefitted significantly from the
education provided even for peasant girls. At the same time, women were forbidden to preach or teach in
public. Motherhood was presented to women as the holiest of callings, on a par with that of apostles and
bishops. So women used creativity in embracing their domestic calling and the authority it brought along.
Women leaders included Katharine Schütz Zell, a widely published lay author who had no children of her
own, but identified herself with a calling of a “church mother.” She exercised pastoral authority by the side
of her pastor-husband in Strasbourg, even daring to preach at funerals. Her scintillating writings in defense
of marriage may have caused an uproar, yet her pastoral texts and a hymnbook demonstrate her desire to
promote ecumenical unity and to empower Christians to sing the gospel with new voices.
Duchess Elisabeth von Braunschweig used her authority as the “mother of the people in her land” to
implement Lutheran faith through legislation. Her advice to her son, whom she groomed as a Lutheran
ruler, was that he should obey God, the emperor, and his mother.
Of all the Reformation mothers, the most famous is Luther’s beloved Katharina von Bora. She won the
heart and admiration of Luther, who had orchestrated the escape of Katharina and eleven other nuns from
their convent. As his equal “partner in calamity,” Katharina mothered their six children and managed the in
tricate finances and other affairs of their bustling household. Luther admitted that next to the Holy Spirit,
he obeyed his wife-“lord,” Katharina.

Summer Employment Opportunities
This summer, students in grades 9-12 will have the opportunity to take part in a mission trip to Denver,
Colorado from July 30 to August 4, 2017. An immersion trip, unlike many mission trips, offers participants
an opportunity to learn about issues that contribute to poverty and injustice, to serve those affected and to
take what we learn back home to our own community. Throughout the week we will be visiting different
non-profits and hearing stories from both advocates and participants about their lives and their work. Add
in some time for service work as well as time to reflect and to worship together and it will be a trip you’ll
be glad you took. Click here to register and please contact Pastor Trish if you have any questions.

With Jesus in the Prayer Gym: Our Relationship with the
Sovereign God
Have you ever entered a classroom and observed that the instructor was in a different mood … not a bad mood … but different. That’s what happened today at the Prayer Gym. We could all see that our Personal Prayer Trainer was, as it were, almost in a different world. But someone was brave enough to ask a question. “You mentioned earlier that in order to have a healthy prayer life, we need to know where we are in relation to the Supreme God of the universe. Tell us more about that relationship?” Our PPT seemed to suddenly come out of that mood we had all observed. “That question opens the door to my mood you no doubt have observed. This month you are entering what you call the season of Lent. You will hear much of what hap-pened the last days of my life. You will learn that I chose the way of the cross to accomplish what could not be done any other way. My apostle Paul said it well: ‘Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross.’ That sameness Paul mentions defines your relationship with the Sovereign God.” Pastor Donohue Sarff
If you like meeting new people, or if you want to share the joy of a certain ministry with which you are in-
volved at CTK, please contact Justine to volunteer for the New Member Mission Team. The mission
team will be a self-directed group discovering ways to engage new members in the life of our congregation.
Aside from attending a planning meeting or two and welcoming new members at orientation, there is no
designated time commitment. Please reach out to members of the Servant Commission if interested.
