If you had an opinion on whether or not the City of Kawartha Lakes needs to

reduce the number of councillors, or vote them in at-large rather than by ward, the current council shut you down at its Mar. 25 meeting. During a lengthy debate, some of the reasons for harpooning a ballot question included: fewer councillors and councillors elected at-large equating to less representation; the age-old urban-rural divide that has yet to dissipate despite 13 years post-amalgamation; the question being posed for pure political and control reasons and one councillor later saying it didn’t matter what the voters wanted anyway since the province has the final say. We asked the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing for their take and senior communications advisor Mike Maka told The Kawartha Promoter

The Municipal Act gives councils the authority to change the composition of council, as long as there is a head of council elected at-large and at least four other councillors. Council also has the authority to create, change or dissolve wards. When the city was created, the restructuring order set out the number of councillors and the ward system but the restructuring order does not prevent council from exercising its authority under the Municipal Act to make changes to council composition or the ward system. “City of Kawartha Lakes council does not need approval from the province to make these changes, or to put a question on the ballot seeking the public’s opinion on reducing the number of council members,” Maka told us. Sunshine list CAO Mark Fisher is the highest paid city employee following Public Sector Salary Disclosure Mar. 31. Fisher made $160,000.10 in 2013 with taxable benefits of $1,405.54. Forty-three employees made $100,000 or more with a mix of senior managers, paramedics and firefighters. Meanwhile, the Kawartha Lakes Police Service chalked up 17 on the Sunshine list for a total of 60 for the CKL.

No ballot question Council decided it will not ask voters at the Oct. 27 municipal election if they are in favour of reducing the number of councillors. A committee of five councillors had recommended that the question be put to the electorate but a majority of councillors opted for no question on the ballot during the Mar. 25 regular council meeting. In a tabled report, it was estimated that the process of a question and carrying out the results could cost taxpayers $30,000.

Council spending for 2013 The 2013 annual report on council remuneration and expenses was tabled at the Mar. 25 meeting. Salary expenses for the mayor and council increased 1.5% over 2012. Overall milage, conferences and other expenses were comparable to 2012. Police board salaries and expenses were down, with board members not attending any out-of-province conferences in 2013. Mayor Ric McGee was paid $86,432.44 in 2013. The next highest councillor total was Ward 16 Coun. Heather Stauble at $37,201.06, while the most frugal was Ward 6 Coun. Doug Elmslie at $29,419.21.

Emergency funding request The Lindsay Gallery asked council on Mar. 27 to waive the gallery’s monthly rental fee of $400 and provide emergency operating funds of $50,000 beginning May 1. The gallery board indicated that without any immediate funding it may have to lay off its one full-time staff person and close in two years. It said it has a full calendar of new and ongoing programming for 2014 as well as fundraising events and added that it provides employment. Meanwhile, organizers of the Lindsay Ribfest are seeking an additional $20,000 in funding.

C.H.E.S.T. request approved The Bobcaygeon Legacy C.H.E.S.T. Fund committee asked council to bring forward its annual application deadline at the Mar. 25 council meeting and the request was approved. The date will be moved up to the last Friday of October, from the second Friday in November.

More bingo events allowed Organizations that hold fundraising bingo at Lindsay Bingo Hall can now stage 104 events a year, up from 78. A report to the Mar. 25 meeting said revenue had decreased the past two years, and the number of organizations was also in decline. This will allow keen organizations to stage more events.

New logo The city is looking at a new logo that will drop the “Catch the spirit” tagline. In addition, they will scrap the “city of” reference. A report to the Mar. 25 meeting said the change would not cost the city anything. However, some $45,000 has been spent on the re-branding initiative that was recommended back in 2011.

More staff hired The city has added another three staff for a combined cost of $205,523.14 a year. It came on the recommendation of public works director Michelle Hendry, who said her department needed two junior engineering technicians and an asset management person.

Wpd road use refused A request by Wpd to access Wild Turkey Road as one of its proposed routes for the Sumac Ridge Wind Project was refused by council.

City Hall – by Gord Killen It is time to go! I have been covering city hall for more than two years. At times I have found council meetings to be funny, sad, frustrating, wondrous and more often ponderous. There comes a time in everyone’s journey when it is appropriate to ‘let

go’. Sometimes we know when to do that and sometimes we need a little push. In this instance it was more like a big shove. For personal reasons I have decided it is time to bow out. However, this being an election year I will stay current with what is happening by reading The Kawartha Promoter and attending public meetings. I hope the voting public will also take a greater interest in who is running for mayor and council as well as trustee positions because it is our tax dollars they will be spending.

By Lisa GervaisliNdSAy – Premier Kathleen Wynne was “mightily impressed” with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes during a Mar. 28 tour. Following the tour, Wynne told the Kawartha Promoter she was impressed with the partnerships the club had established and said “when I think about a hub for kids, this is the kind of place that I imagine. It just seems to have touched everything and I’m just mightily impressed.” She lauded all aspects of the club’s offerings, from childcare, to before and after school programs, close links to school boards, the criminal youth diversion program, alternative education and opportunities for sports and recreation. “So I can tell you I am going to be carrying this model in my mind as we make policy decisions and platform decisions going forward.” During the tour, Wynne showed great interest in the gymnastics room, later quipping “I love gymnastics. It was hard to keep me off of that trampoline.” She said she thinks kids need to, in a safe environment, learn how to take risks, both in interpersonal relationship and physically. “I think if we try to protect kids from that, then we do them a disservice so we all need to push ourselves.” Wynne also visited Common Grounds coffee shop in Lindsay to meet with businesspeople and farmers.

MASTErS-bOuNdBy Lisa GervaisbObCAyGEON - On Apr. 6, nine-year-old Bobcaygeon girl Nyah Kelly will stand on the 18th hole of Augusta National and putt her little heart out as she competes in the “Drive, Chip and Putt” contest at the home of the Masters. The fact she will be there at all is a miracle as her name had to be selected from more than 17,600 entrants in a

lottery and she had to place first or second in two qualifying competitions in New York state to get to America’s most exalted golf green. She will now join 87 other kids between the ages of seven and 15 in the contest on the Sunday before the Masters begins. She will compete in the seven to nine girls’ category. The driving and chipping competition will take place on Augusta’s practice range but the putting contest will be on the fabled 18th green, where Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and so many others made putts that won the Masters. The finals will also be televised by Golf Channel. Augusta National, the U.S. Golf Association and the PGA of America are in charge of the program.

“I’m pretty excited and I’m nervous too,” Nyah told The Kawartha Promoter, noting she will be playing in front of a large crowd as well as a TV audience. She admitted that she wants to win, not just compete. She will have a large contingent of family on hand too. Golf is in this kid’s blood. Her mother is Shana Kelly, a PGA of Canada Class A Professional at Kelly’s Glen Golf Learning Centre on Pigeon Lake Road and the entire immediate and extended family is golf-mad. Nyah first picked up a club at age two-and-a-half. Shana said it is a dream come true for the whole family. Nyah said she had been practicing every day for half-an-hour to an hour at the centre. She said putting is her strong suit; she has a new driver she hopes will give her another 30 yards off of the tee but she needs to work on her chipping. Asked who her favourite golfer is, she replies Bubba Watson. An accomplished figure skater, she is asked what sport she would pick and says it is a dead heat. By Lisa GervaisbObCAyGEON - A prominent environmentalist is coming to help a group fighting zoning bylaw approval of the Dewdney Mountain Farm limestone quarry in Trent Lakes. Maude Barlow will attend the Earth Day event, scheduled

for the Lakeview Arts Barn, on Saturday, Apr. 19. Barlow, who has written numerous books on water, is coming at the request of Ward 13 Coun. Pat Warren who met Barlow socially a few years back and the two have kept in touch. Barlow will be on hand from 4 to 6 p.m. and then there will be a dance from 8 p.m. featuring the Eclectic G-Strings.

Warren said the event is a fundraiser for Citizens for Responsible Aggregate Development (formerly known as the quarry committee under The North Pigeon Lake Ratepayers Association). Nine citizens are fighting the municipal zoning bylaw approval before the Ontario Municipal Board in a hearing slated to begin May 20. Warren said she did not think the Bobcaygeon community realized the impact the quarry could have on the town, with the possibility of trucks rumbling over the bypass bridge by Port 32 on a regular basis. She said that route gets congested in summer as it is. With the appeal pending, the Municipality of Trent Lakes will not comment but mayor Janet Clarkson told the Kawartha Promoter in October the province is the driving force behind the development, not the municipality and believes that is where angry residents should take their fight. The quarry owner maintains it has carried out required studies on hydrogeology, production noise, blasting, traffic, archaeology and the environment for its planned 432-acre limestone quarry on Ledge Rd., about 15 km northwest of Buckhorn. Barlow told The Kawartha Promoter: “The latest rewrite of the provincial Aggregate Resources Act has disappointed communities across Ontario. Our demands for robust regulations to protect land and water were ignored. The lesson, once again, is that it is up to the communities themselves to protect what is most important. We have the right to water and we have the obligation to protect it.” Tickets are $30 for Barlow and the dance or $20 if you want to go to only one. bobcaygeon & district Horticultural Society Although we have endured and/or enjoyed one of the longest, coldest and snowiest winters in recent memory, it is not all grim news for the gardens. The heavy snow cover is a blessing for plants, insulating them from sub-zero temperatures and dry piercing winds. The density and depth of the snow pack should have made it harder for critters to feast on roots, branches and trunks this year. So what is there to do right now while we wait? Growing seedlings indoors under lights or on windowsills is an option. It is a cheerful and practical way to get a head start on perennials, herbs and tomato plants. Always check the seed package instructions. Start dahlia, canna or other container plants any day now. Those of you who have year round house plants should give them a good cleaning at this time of year. Accumulations of winter dust on the leaves can block out sunlight and reduce the plant’s ability to feed itself. It is also an ideal time to trim out dead foliage, remove any chemical deposits on the outside of the pot, top up the plant growing medium, start regular feedings and transplant root-bound plants to bigger containers. Attend a meeting of your local horticultural club. They can be found in communities such as Lindsay, Omemee, Fenelon Falls, Coboconk, Norland, Minden, Ennismore, Peterborough, Lakefield and Bobcaygeon. They share gardening tips, organize community projects and host interesting speakers. Paul Zammit, one of the most informative and entertaining speakers on the gardening circuit is coming to the Presbyterian Church Hall in Bobcaygeon on Thursday, Apr. 17. The topic is Tropical Plants – Inside and Outdoors. Be there for 7 p.m. He is well worth the $10 admission fee.

CHOriSTErS COrNErThe Bobcaygeon Choristers recently entertained the residents at both Pinecrest Nursing Home and Case Manor. The choir also performed at Retirement Suites of Kawartha Lakes on West Street. Each evening they had a sing-a-long with the audience and were surprised at the response. They could have had choirs of their own. The choir also discovered that it had an excellent master of ceremonies in its midst. Laura Plummer, who just happens to be the director’s wife, did a wonderful job of introducing the director, the accompanist and the choir. While announcing the numbers in the program, she always had a story to tell along the way. The group would like to thank the three venues for allowing them to hold their weekly practice following the performances. Some of the residents stayed to listen and I do believe that I heard some applause at one point. An afternoon trip to Ross Memorial Hospital to

perform for some of the patients was also part of the choir’s community spirit. It was hoped that a little bit of choral sunshine could brighten their day. Now that spring is upon us and we can get beautiful weather one day and a raging snowstorm the next, it is the time when some of our snowbirds will be returning from warmer climes. The Chamber of Commerce article and advertisement in the Mar. 7 issue of The Kawartha Promoter carried the message that Midnight Madness, the wildly-popular Aug. 2 event supported by the chamber, needed to build a new committee. We’re happy to report that 10 positions have been filled to date, with the first committee meeting already held. Bobcaygeon newcomer and Re/Max All-Stars Realty representative Kent Leckie is the new chairperson, Marylynn Lindsay (Purdy’s Jewellers) continues as treasurer and Bob Hughes has signed on as secretary. Gillian Barrett, Kerry Cook (In Fine Feather), Kevin Foster (Spitting Images), Nancy Hartai (Thompson’s Ready-to-Wear), Shaukat Mohamed (Pick’N’Save) and Joy and Jerry Mous (My Favourite Things) are committee members. Gillian and Bob also represent the chamber. Meanwhile, the chamber’s ever-popular Unlock the Summer will be chaired by new-this-term director Cathy Hopkins-Poole, Re/Max All-Stars Realty, who is looking for committee and day-of volunteers for this labour-intensive event. And, although June 14 may seem a long way away, it’s really not in terms of this event’s extensive planning, programming and setting up. KAWArTHA lAKES - The city is giving residents of Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, Lindsay, Omemee, and Woodville an opportunity to review the final version of its plans for growth and development in each community, and provide input on a new

program of financial incentives. Following extensive consultation, research, and analysis completed through 2012 and 2013, the municipality is ready to share the details of the plans to guide each community’s growth and development over the next 20 years. All interested citizens are encouraged to attend the open house in their community or visit the municipality’s website to obtain the Secondary Plans. The municipality is also concurrently conducting public consultation for new Community Improvement Plans (CIPs). Upon completion, the CIPs will make financial incentives available to downtown / main street properties in Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, Lindsay, Omemee, and Woodville to encourage renovation, rehabilitation, and redevelopment. “The linkage between the Secondary Plans and the Community Improvement Plans is very important,” said Michael Benner, the municipality’s manager of policy planning. “The Secondary Plans provide long-term direction and the CIPs will help stimulate positive change in the short-term.” The Secondary Plan open houses and consultation on the Community Improvement Plans will consist of display materials, an informal presentation, and a question-and-answer session. SAFETy MOST iMPOrTANT Canadians view the safety of a neighbourhood as the most important (63%) feature of a home’s location, according to a new BMO Bank of Montreal survey. The survey, conducted by Pollara, also found that living on a quiet street (43%), having good neighbours (30%) having a short commute to work (28%) and being near family and friends (25%) rank high on Canadians’ list of location priorities when buying a home. “Everyone has a unique set of personal and financial priorities, so it’s important that those particular needs are considered when deciding on the right location to purchase a home,” said Laura Parsons, Mortgage Expert, BMO Bank of Montreal. “Taking a practical approach to home buying is the key to preventing yourself from getting ‘swept away’ by the bells and whistles of a house. Home buyers should make a list of needs versus wants and prioritize them in order of highest to lowest importance.” The poll also revealed that significant differences become apparent when comparing

the national averages to first-time home buyers.

For instance:• Having a short commute to work is more

important to first-time buyers than the average buyer (34% versus 28%)

OTTAWA – Minister of National Revenue, Kerry-Lynne Findlay has

revealed that more Canadians are filing T1 income tax and benefit returns

online than ever before. As of Mar. 24, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)

has received more than 6.7 million returns, with close to 84% filed electronically, compared to 80% at the

same time last year. The CRA says electronic filing is quickly becoming the norm, as tax filers discover how convenient, easy, and secure online filing is. The CRA said direct deposit has also increased. So far, 65% of taxpayers getting a refund received it by direct deposit compared to 61% at the same time last year. When combining online filing with direct deposit, taxpayers may get their refunds in as little as eight days. Given the number of free software options available, filing a T1 income tax and benefit return couldn’t be easier or simpler, the CRA said.

Quick facts:• Taxpayers have until midnight Apr. 30 to file their

2013 T1 income tax and benefit return and to pay any balance owing.

• If an individual, his or her spouse, or common-law partner is self-employed, the deadline to file a 2013 return has been extended until midnight June 16,

since June 15 falls on a Sunday. However, any balance owing must still be paid by Apr. 30.

• So far, the average refund amount is $1,619.11.• On Mar. 24, the number of online submissions

processed on the CRA website hit a seasonal high to date of 1763 per minute.

To claim the FCA, the dependant must be:• 18 years or older and dependent on you because of a physical or mental impairment; or• a child under 18 with a physical or mental impairment. The impairment must be prolonged and indefinite, and the child must be dependent on you for assistance in attending to personal needs and care when compared to children of the same age. You may be asked to provide a signed statement from a medical doctor that provides information on the nature, commencement and duration of the dependant’s impairment. You can claim the family caregiver amount for more than one eligible dependant.

“Small businesses employ more than 90% of workers in rural Ontario, so it is important for me to know what the government can do to help these businesses succeed,” said Scott. “I am looking forward to seeing the responses.” Scott’s office mailed out approximately 1,000 surveys asking business owners about issues such as how the cost of hydro is impacting their business, whether red tape has increased and if they are experiencing a shortage of skilled tradespeople. “The cost of doing business in Ontario has steadily increased under this Liberal government,” said Scott. “Hydro rates have skyrocketed and will continue to go up another 42% over the next five years. lOOKiNG FOr FEEdbACKSix local health care organizations in Peterborough City and County are asking their communities – local residents, clients and caregivers, staff, volunteers, social services and other health care partners – to provide their feedback on a more collaborative way of delivering health care that they believe will improve access, ensure taxpayer dollars continue to be effectively spent to deliver services and better position the organizations to respond to increasing demands and future changes. A proposed draft integrated service delivery model, developed as part of a facilitated integration process initiated by the Central East Local Health Integration Network (Central East LHIN), is now posted to the LHIN website, each of the six organizations’ websites and is also available in hard copy. The proposed draft confirms that the six organizations will continue to exist and that their current services will continue to be provided to existing clients in existing communities and facilities. In the proposed draft, the organizations have focused their attention on ways they can improve communication and education and enhance their joint planning to ensure everyone is directed to the care that is right for them. Together, the organizations want to streamline their referral and assessment processes to make it easier for people to find their way to the services they require. They also hope to find efficiencies by sharing administrative expertise. The 15-page document is accompanied by two surveys – one directed to clients and local residents and one to staff and other health care and social service partners. Until Apr. 4, the six organizations will be using the surveys and meeting with their staff, volunteers, clients and partners to gather feedback on the model before a final plan is presented to their respective boards in May and the Central East LHIN board in June.

The health unit recently learned that it was among the workplaces selected by the MHCC. “It is a tremendous honour to be among a small group of workplaces in Canada selected for the project,” says Dr. Lynn Noseworthy, Medical Officer of Health with the HKPR District Health Unit. “Having access to the Mental Health Commission’s experts will be valuable and timely as we move forward to implement the National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace.” The voluntary Standard is the first of its kind in the world, providing tools and resources to help

workplaces promote and improve their approach to mental well-being among workers. The goal is to prevent mental injury, reduce absenteeism and support healthier workplaces. According to the commission, on any given week, roughly half a million Canadians will miss work due to a mental health problem or illness. The health unit added that its participation will benefit other local workplaces as it can share its journey and motivate and support them in their own efforts to address mental health issues at work. CMHA NEWSliNdSAy - The Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (CMHA HKPR) has moved. The new Lindsay office is at 33 Lindsay St. S.CMHA HKPR was formed through the voluntary

amalgamation of CMHA Kawartha Lakes and CMHA Peterborough in April 2013. The Kawartha Lakes branch used to be at 2 Kent St. W. In other CMHA HKPR news, the organization wanted to thank Riley Thompson and Kayla Hinze, first year students in the Police Foundations Program at Fleming College, for raising $250. With the recent announcement of a new mental health component being added to their program, Thompson and Hinze thought the CMHA HKPR would be a great place to donate the money. “Mental health is a huge aspect of policing and we need to be more aware of the different signs and symptoms regarding mental illness,” Hinze said. Thompson and Hinze will be part of the first class to go through the new mental health course beginning in the fall of this year.

EMPlOyErS FiGHT HiGHEr CPP COSTS

bObCAyGEON - A representative of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) said federal and provincial governments have been considering an increase to Canada Pension Plan (CPP) payments for small business owners. In Bobcaygeon last week, Sandi Evans said finance ministers did not reach an agreement on increasing CPP payments earlier this year but it is clear the threat is not going away. She said the federal government and the provinces have been considering an increase to CPP payments for some time but the majority of working Canadians don’t see this as their top choice for boosting retirement savings. The CFIB is calling for a freeze on CPP paid out by small business owners and greater government transparency on the issue. The CFIB has successfully lobbied to have employer EI contributions frozen until 2017. Evans said that before any further thought is given to hiking CPP or creating mandatory provincial plans, ministers must commit to full public consultations as increases would mean a significant premium hike for employers and working Canadians and even more serious impacts for the economy.

lAW TO COMbAT ASiAN CArP

The Ontario government has introduced a bill to support the prevention, early detection, rapid response and eradication of invasive species. The proposed Invasive Species Act would give Ontario the tools to only allow gutted Asian carp into the province. The proposed Act includes provisions allowing for strong penalties and enhanced enforcement powers to investigate violations. And if a high-risk species such as Asian carp were found in Ontario, the legislation would enable rapid response actions, such as working with partners on control and eradication efforts. If the proposed legislation is passed, Ontario will be the first jurisdiction in Canada with stand-alone invasive species legislation. A press release said everyone can help prevent the spread of invasive species. Here are some tips:• If you see an invasive species, report it to the Invading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711 or to [email protected]. • When fishing, don’t empty your bait bucket in or near water – it’s against the law. • When boating, wash your boat before you move to another lake or river. • If you’re travelling, don’t take plants, plant parts, seeds, or fruit across borders.

• Look before you leave: check your camping equipment, boats, tires, boots, etc., that may harbour invasive species, seeds or plants, insects, or tree diseases.• Buy firewood locally, burn it on site, and avoid transporting it long distances as it may contain invasive forest insects or diseases.

C-liNKS SOCiAl SErViCES MAP

lAuNCHEdliNdSAy - Accessing social services just got a whole lot easier following the Mar. 26 C-Links launch of a social services map for the city. The map, which can be accessed through the C-Links website (www.c-links.ca), includes approximately 300 points indicating social services in the city and a mass transit overlay showing the three bus routes in Lindsay and each stop along each route. A number of agencies helped fund the project, including federal money administered by the Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation, Fleming College, the United Way


Don't Wait for a Funeral to Celebrate

Have you said, “The only time I see my relatives is at weddings and funerals”? If your family is like mine, years could pass without seeing each other. Every time we are together, we all say, “We should do this more often.” But it ends there.

There is something to be said about the value of gathering together just for the sake of being with extended family.

Listen to Uncle Lester retell his story about getting lost in Montreal for three days on his way to Alberta. Or great-aunt Mildred sharing what it was like to have to leave school to look after her brothers and sisters when her mother died.

We have an uncle in our family who will be turning 100 in August. Through all the ups and downs of life, he has never lost his sense of humour. The hall in town has been rented and plans made. Relatives from near and far will descend on Lockeport, Nova Scotia to be part of this celebration.

Maybe it is time for a family party that is neither a wedding nor a funeral. It doesn't have to cost a lot of money – potluck would be great. Family from out of town would love to spend a night on your saggy pullout sofa. You will probably stay up half the night telling “Remember when….” stories.

Right now, the weather isn't conducive to having a picnic, but it is perfect for planning one. Create a new folder on your computer called “Picnic 2014”. Make notes to your heart's content. I can promise you won't regret it.

Barbara Bush wrote, “At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child, or a parent.”

April 1st marked the first anniversary of Dad's death. I still think of him often and mention his name daily.

Recently, Glenn and I moved into our own home just a couple of minutes from the funeral home. As I was unpacking, I came across many things that evoked poignant feelings.

The first item I found was his cheque book, which contained a signed blank cheque. Without thinking, I pressed that familiar signature to my lips and kissed it over and over.

Next, I found a “built to scale” model dory he had made for me. For moving, it had been stored in the filing cabinet. It will always remain a mystery how his monstrous hands could do such fine, intricate work. The dory contained a little bucket, complete with all the gear a fisherman would need — a miniature knife, a gaff, fish hooks, halibut bat along with many other implements.

The last straw came when I opened a box filled with the handwritten manuscripts for his books. He would send them to me to decipher and type. Dad only attended three or four years of school and had not learned spelling and punctuation in that short time. I could read his hen scratch, but the punctuation was another challenge. He knew from reading voraciously, that the written word contained periods, commas, question marks, etc. There was, however, neither rhyme nor reason to where he placed them. After a few words he would throw in a period. That left me to determine where one sentence ended and the next one began.

By that time, I was awash in so many feelings that I just sat and cried for awhile. So often, I just want to call him to say hi, talk about the weather and find out about his latest escapades, but I can't. I am grateful that I have his signature, his dory and his manuscripts. It is like having a little piece of him.

The event gets underway at 7 p.m. and will feature door prizes, finger food, a fashion show, a tarot reader, jewelry, beauty products, fashion accessories and more. Tickets are now on sale at the legion at Hwy. 35 and 48. Organizers said the spring fling started in 2008 as a way to bring women from the area together to shake off the winter blah’s and have a fun night out. Usually, 80 to 90 women attend and there are 10 to a dozen vendor tables as well as the fashion show featuring a local store. Women get a complimentary glass of wine with admission. Funds go to supporting the Legion branch and the community through the auxiliary’s bursary fund which supports youth education, youth sports (such as track and field), seniors (Community Care) and homeless veterans.
