I feel for the residents of the Lakeview Water Co-op in Thurstonia as they face the daunting task of

coming up with an estimated $5,000 to $15,000 per household to hook up to municipal water. I also empathize with the City of Kawartha Lakes which has been ordered by the Ministry of the Environment to take over the co-op’s water issues. Ever since the province passed the Safe Water Drinking Act in 2002, the city has had to shell out millions of dollars to meet more stringent rules for water and wastewater. The SWDA was motivated by Walkerton, which was indeed a tragedy. Has the province over-reacted? Some would argue yes. However, I can understand that it does not want to be responsible for any more lost lives. So, where are we? The MOE has forced the city to step in. It, in turn, will force residents to pay the price tag for compliance, not wanting

taxpayers across the city to have to subsidize this once private water system. But what if the city revisited a very smart initiative it has already undertaken on behalf of residents who must repair, replace or upgrade their septic systems? Ward 8 Coun. Donna Villemaire was the driving force behind the septic rehabilitation program, similar to the city’s tile drainage program. The program allows residents to secure the required funds against their property tax assessment. This would allow the city to pay for the work and recover that money through a local improvement charge. The charge would then appear on the residents’ property tax bills as a surcharge until the charge is completely paid off. On the sale of the property, the charge remains with the property. If it isn’t paid, it “sticks” to the property. I would encourage city staff to continue to talk to residents to hammer out an agreement that allows for the work to be done to comply with the MOE’s order while allowing residents to pay the money back over a reasonable period of time.* see City at war with MOE on p. 7

I seriously doubt this will be the only letter you receive regarding the back-breaking cost of Hydro in this area. I, like the Shirreffs, have property in the Kawarthas (I live in mine year round, however) and

the feeling of being gouged has entered my head in all seasons. Calling Hydro does absolutely no good at all. The answer is always the same and one comes away more frustrated and angry at wasting their time to listen to their gibberish. What I want to know is this: Where on Earth does my Hydro come from, where is the depot, how many miles away can it be and what happened to the cost of doing business anyway? Back in the day (I’m 75), delivery was part of that cost and if you bought a business that had debt, you and they paid it off. The customer was valued enough not to be robbed blind, and if treated fairly stayed with the company forever. Here comes the government, more than willing to say yes to any and all increases proposed by Hydro, regardless of the hardship put on its people. I want proof when it comes to delivery and debt charges. I want it spelled out on my bill, when the debt was accrued and when (if ever) it will be paid off as well as proof that it actually costs what Hydro says it does to deliver, from where it’s delivered to where it’s received. Wastewater emergency fund Every year, some residents are faced with the inconvenience and expense of sanitary sewer backups that may be caused by system anomalies or malfunctions or intense rain. This can be intensified by cross connections with sump pumps redirecting storm water. The consequences of these back-ups can leave residents with large, clean-up expenses. Residents may be caught in a waiting game between the city insurance coverage and their own insurance coverage and substantial delays are the result. Ward 6 councillor Doug Elmslie, put forward a motion that Staff be requested to review the creation of a program to establish a relief fund for affected parties in order to provide them with immediate funds up to a maximum dollar amount that staff deem reasonable, with a report back to council by the end of the third quarter of 2014. Elmslie also asked that staff research and develop a draft subsidy program and policy that will provide up to $1,000 per residential or commercial property to install backwater valves in their homes or businesses with a report back for the third quarter 2014.

Code of Conduct for council/employees CAO Mark Fisher submitted a suggested policy statement regarding a code of conduct and ethics for the mayor and councillors. The idea is to supplement legislative requirements. The code would strengthen the public’s confidence and perception that elected representatives operate from a base of integrity, justice, respect, honesty and courtesy. It covers general terms, gifts and benefits, confidentiality and use of municipal information and conduct at meetings. Another initiative from the CAO promotes a written code of conduct and ethics for staff. It is again aimed at supplementing legislative parameters supporting professional standards and codes of conduct and ethics already in place. Key areas include: respect, integrity, teamwork, competency, excellence, communication and a positive attitude.

Bobcaygeon wants in Matching funds totaling $245,000 from the Ontario Government (RED) were granted to the city to implement projects in Coboconk-Norland, Fenelon Falls, Lindsay and Omemee totaling $491.000 Both councillors for Bobcaygeon, Pat Warren and Brian Junkin, queried the director of economic development as to why Bobcaygeon was not included since Bobcaygeon is the second largest urban area in the city. They were assured that while they were not included in the original submission the program could be expanded to include them.

Films By The Falls COmingFenelOn Falls – The Kawartha Lakes Film Circuit has announced details of its upcoming Films by the Falls season, including opening night. The season will open Mar. 25 with two additional movie screenings Apr. 29 and May 27. All screenings will take place in the auditorium of the Fenelon Falls Secondary School. The feature documentary 20 Feet From Stardom from TIFF’s winter catalogue and director Morgan Neville will be the first movie screened in the series. “We are thrilled to announce our opening night details,” said chair Kathryn Rogers. “It’s been a lot of work and we can’t wait to share the movie experience with our fellow movie fans. The wonderful support we have received from the Fenelon Falls community has been outstanding and without it this would not have been possible.” Tickets are on sale at a few downtown businesses and the high school and a limited number will be available at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; show commences at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $10 per person, taxes included. Kawartha Lakes Film Circuit was formed in 2013 and is a group of volunteers living in and near Fenelon Falls who want to share their passion for movies by bringing local residents the opportunity to experience the world through film. Film Circuit is TIFF’s (Toronto International Film Festival) successful outreach programme.

FenelOn Falls – ‘The Horse Whisperer’ will be laid to rest this weekend in Fenelon Falls. Gregory Joseph Barrington, 67, passed away Feb. 13 and will be remembered at two visitations and a celebration of life Mar. 7 and 8. According to his obituary on the Jardine Funeral Home website, Mr Barrington had been an active member of the Kinmount Fair Board for many years, including president. He had also served with the Lions Club for several years. He is remembered for playing an influential role in the lives of many young people as a caring foster parent. KaWarTha laKes – Now that the city’s volunteer firefighters have voted to unionize, the next step will see them elect a bargaining committee to work with the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC) to negotiate their first-ever contract with the City of Kawartha Lakes. CLAC spokesman J.D. Alkema told the Kawartha Promoter that 72% of volunteer firefighters voted 72% in favour of unionizing and “we’re very pleased that that many people came out.” Alkema said they are awaiting certification by the Ontario Labour Board but are looking forward to internal meetings heading into the Spring when they

then hope to meet with the city to strike a collective bargaining agreement. The city issued a news release following the unionization vote to say residents will continue to receive “the same level of professional, quality service from the city’s volunteer firefighters” following the Feb. 24 vote.” The city has 356 volunteer firefighters. The release adds that city officials look forward to working with members of CLAC, as they do all union organizations representing employees within the city, on the volunteer firefighter’s initial contract and look forward to a continued positive relationship with the volunteers.

CiTy aT War WiTh mOeKaWarTha laKes - The City of Kawartha Lakes has demanded an immediate investigation into the Peterborough office of the Ministry of Environment (MOE) and the enforcement branch following an MOE order last month for it to assume operations and take responsibility for the Lakeview Water Co-op water system. “We are asking that Premier Wynne and Minister Bradley conduct an investigation into the operations of these two departments as a result of more than six years of inaction on their part to ensure safe drinking water for residents in Thurstonia, Kawartha Lakes,” Mayor Ric McGee said. In August, 2008, the MOE issued an order against 11 co-op residences requiring them to comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act 2002. The city said it believes the order has never been


rescinded or enforced and residents have also not taken any action. “So 12 years after the Safe Drinking Water Act came into being and six years after ignoring their own order against the impacted residences, the MOE has decided to go after the city because we have deeper pockets. This order isn’t about safe drinking water, this order is about the MOE laying the financial blame for their inaction on the city,” McGee said. McGee has consistently said he does not want other CKL residents to subsidize the co-op’s water costs. At a special council meeting Feb. 19, the city passed a bylaw to establish and require payment to recover costs expended on behalf of the co-op. Several residents attended a Feb. 20 update meeting in Bobcaygeon in which they again emphasized they cannot afford the estimated $5,000 to $15,000 price tag per household for a new system.

KaWarTha laKes - The Anglican parish of the Kawartha Lakes has officially welcomed a new priest. Rev. Bob Bettson moved from Toronto in January to begin ministry for the parish, which includes Christ Church, Bobcaygeon, St. Luke’s, Burnt River and St. John’s, Dunsford. Rev. Bettson was officially welcomed as incumbent of the parish at a special celebration of new ministry and induction at Christ Church Bobcaygeon on Sunday, Feb. 9. The service was attended by parishioners from all three congregations as well as clergy from throughout the Victoria Haliburton Deanery.

Bishop Linda Nicholls, area Bishop for Trent Durham area of Toronto Diocese, presided at a service of Holy Communion and induction, with Canon Tim Elliott, of Toronto, as guest preacher. Canon Elliott was homiletics tutor at Trinity College, Toronto, where Rev. Bettson completed his theological studies. The new Kawartha Lakes priest spent two decades as a journalist including four years as religion writer at the Calgary Herald, a daily newspaper, and 11 years as a writer and editor at the United Church Observer. Since his ordination in 2001, Rev. Bettson has served parishes in Didsbury (AB.), Calgary (AB.), Dauphin (MB.) and Sarnia (ON.) Rev. Bettson and his wife Coline live in a rectory next door to Christ Church, Bobcaygeon with a dog and three cats. They have four grown children, and three grandchildren.

WinD hearing aDjOurneD

TOrOnTO – The Environmental Review Tribunal has adjourned the Cham Shan Temple, Cransley Home Farm Ltd. and Manvers Wind Concerns’ case over the wpd Sumac Ridge Wind Inc. renewable energy approval until Apr. 8. The Feb. 26 ruling followed hearings in Toronto on Feb. 25 and 10. In a written order provided to The Kawartha Promoter, it said “on that date, the Tribunal will review the status of the proceeding.” The time and location of the review has not yet been announced. Hearing dates had been set down for Lindsay starting Feb. 24 but were cancelled. On that date, wind farm opponents instead bussed to Toronto to protest at the Ontario Legislature. MPP Laurie Scott has also renewed her calls for a moratorium on wind projects. A couple of issues discussed during a Feb. 25 teleconference hearing (which The Kawartha Promoter listened to) was opposition claims that Sumac Ridge missed a noise receptor site within 550 m of a turbine when preparing its case. The issue of possible disturbance of graves at the old Ballyduff church was also discussed.

The BuCKs sTOp hereBOBCaygeOn – The Bobcaygeon Bucks 2013-14 season has come to an end with a first round playoff defeat at the hands of the Seguin Huskies. The Bucks dropped three games in a row by scores of 8-2, 11-2 and 9-3 to the regular-season winning Huskies. The Bucks finished the season in 16th place out of 20 teams with a record of 11 wins, 27 losses and four overtime losses for 26 points. Meanwhile, former Buck Nikolai Skladnichenko has won a bronze medal at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship. Nikolai was representing Team Russia in the tournament. Nikolai played with the Bucks for two seasons back in 2009-10 and 2010-11. In his final GMHL season, Skladnichenko finished fifth in team scoring with 50 points (25 goals and 25 assists) in just 42 games. He was just 15 years old the first time he suited up in the GMHL. In the World Junior Championships, Nikolai played in all seven games for his country. While playing in Bobcaygeon, Nikolai caught the eye of the KHL team Barys Astana who drafted him in the fourth round #101 overall in the KHL entry draft. Barys Astana took special interest in the GMHL that season, also drafting and signing Alexander Nikulnikov from the Shelburne Red Wings in the third round of that draft. Nikolai has spent the last two seasons between

Russia’s top professional league, the KHL and their top junior development league the MHL. He is currently on the roster of Metallurg Novokuznetsk (KHL).

Curling FOr ChariTyBOBCayeOn - The first annual ‘Bobcaygeon Cares’ local charity bonspiel. at the Bobcaygeon Curling Club Feb. 19-22, was a great success with more than 96 curlers, numerous volunteers and business sponsors. The event started Wednesday night with curlers playing one game on each of the three evenings. Saturday featured curling throughout the early afternoon followed by silent auction bidding on a wide array of items. In addition, curlers and their guests were invited to purchase tickets for the raffle table. Local businesses, residents and club members donated the items. The day wrapped up with a hearty roast chicken dinner followed by the presentation of medals to the winning curlers. The real winners are local charitable organizations selected by the Curling Club to be this year’s recipients of proceeds. The Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank and Community Care (Bobcaygeon and District) will share the bulk of the proceeds and a smaller donation has been presented to the Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society. The Bobcaygeon Curling Club would like this to be the first of many annual bonspiels recognizing the good work of local charitable organizations.

WhO is Bill DenBy?

By lisa gervais Mayoral candidate Bill Denby drinks root beer with breakfast at 9 o’clock in the morning, talking a mile a minute about everything, including his similarities to beleaguered Toronto mayor Rob Ford. Denby says he has never smoked crack cocaine but is Ford-like. “Rob Ford came into power with a platform. He delivered on his platform. What happened there was, because his platform attacked key individuals within the city, the old boys’ club, he’s been painted as this lunatic. The problem is,

you can only be stalked so long, 24/7/365, some people can handle that pressure and actually deal with it effectively. Other people break. Ford, I think, is broken.” Denby admits to being controversial and confrontational. He took on the Dairy Farmers of Ontario a few years back. Nor does he shy away from publicity, both good and bad. “I have to get my point across to the electorate and to the public that there is something wrong in the City of Kawartha Lakes,” he says. Since filing his nomination papers on Jan. 1, he has faced criminal charges in connection with being a Lindsay landlord. He has filed statements of claim or threatened a number of lawsuits. He is requesting that the Ontario Civilian Police Commission investigate the Kawartha Lakes Police Services Board and has been at the centre of a board leaked document scandal. And, he has been banned from the Lindsay Exhibition fairgrounds where mayoral candidate Andy

Letham is general manager. He has also outlined an ambitious election platform and is in the midst of recruiting a slate of candidates. He is asked about whether all of the controversy swirling around him will negatively impact his campaign as some people will dismiss him as “crazy” or a “conspiracy theorist.” “There’s choice. I always say, take time, watch me, come to the debates, ask me questions and I’ll give you the answers.” A self-described entrepreneur, he believes council and staff have held the city back. His platform is heavily based on sending a message to investors that the city is open for business. Have you said, “The only time I see my relatives is at weddings and funerals”? If your family is like mine, years could pass without seeing each other. Every time we are together, we all say, “We should do this more often.” But it ends there.

There is something to be said about the value of gathering together just for the sake of being with extended family.

Listen to Uncle Lester retell his story about getting lost in Montreal for three days on his way to Alberta. Or great-aunt Mildred sharing what it was like to have to leave school to look after her brothers and sisters when her mother died.

We have an uncle in our family who will be turning 100 in August. Through all the ups and downs of life, he has never lost his sense of humour. The hall in town has been rented and plans made. Relatives from near and far will descend on Lockeport, Nova Scotia to be part of this celebration.

Maybe it is time for a family party that is neither a wedding nor a funeral. It doesn't have to cost a lot of money – potluck would be great. Family from out of town would love to spend a night on your saggy pullout sofa. You will probably stay up half the night telling “Remember when….” stories.

Right now, the weather isn't conducive to having a picnic, but it is perfect for planning one. Create a new folder on your computer called “Picnic 2014”. Make notes to your heart's content. I can promise you won't regret it.

Barbara Bush wrote, “At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child, or a parent.”

linDsay - Jamie Schmale will seek the federal Conservative nomination for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. The decision was made following last November’s announcement by current MP Barry Devolin he would not seek re-election in 2015. “After 10 years as Barry’s executive assistant, I feel I have gained the knowledge and skills needed to tackle the many issues facing this area,” Schmale said. “It has been an honour to work with such a great representative and I hope local members of the party will consider me worthy of their support.” Schmale was campaign manager for the 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2011 federal elections. He has been a member of the riding association since 2004 and currently holds a number of volunteer positions in the area. In a press release, he said he would focus his campaign on jobs and the economy. “The Trent-Severn Waterway can be a great economic driver for this area, and I will continue to work with local stakeholders to improve this resource so that it reaches its full potential.” He said he would also work to improve market access for farmers, manufacturers, and exporters by ensuring government departments act in a more collaborative manner and keeping taxes low for Canadian businesses and families. Growing up in Bobcaygeon, Schmale began his career with 910 CKLY radio in Lindsay and spent the next seven years as a local journalist and news director. First running for the Conservative Party of Canada nomination in 2003, Schmale went on to lead Devolin’s team in Lindsay and Ottawa. Local Conservative Party members will determine their official candidate at a nomination meeting later this year.

marCh BreaK Fun Looking for some March break activities for the kids? The city is calling all junior flying enthusiasts for its Cyber Camp for Kids. Participants, aged seven to 11 years, will investigate flight, construct a paper airplane and perform flight tests. Computers will be used to research lift and aerodynamics, find airplane patterns and track statistics. This program takes place at Library branches throughout the city but space is limited and children are requested to register in advance at their local library. CarOlyn’s reTiremenTBOBCaygeOn - A familiar face to many at the Bobcaygeon branch of the City of Kawartha Lakes public library retired last Friday (Feb. 28) after a 24-year career. Carolyn Warren was fare-welled in fine style with flowers, gifts, balloons, edible goodies and many kind words. She told the Kawartha Promoter she was ‘overwhelmed’ by the community response on her last official day of work. She had planned to work a normal day but retirement festivities soon took over. Many patrons and colleagues told her how much she would be missed. She said the highlights of her job had been meeting people, that everyday was a learning experience and joked she had a head full of trivia she didn’t know what she was going to do with now.

for the church. At this slow time of the year, the Choristers are entertaining residents of local nursing homes in the coming weeks, along with leading them in ‘sing-alongs ‘ of melodies familiar to them. The group will also be singing in the foyer of Ross Memorial Hospital. The group is pleased to welcome a new tenor to their ranks. Bob Bettson is the new Anglican minister and

has previously sung in many choirs. This is a very good time to join the Choristers as they learn new music. FenelOn Falls - The Kawartha North Family Health Team (KNFHT) officially opened the new Fenelon Falls walk-in clinic in the Pharmasave Feb. 26. Community fundraising has allowed the team to offer the clinic on Fridays between 9 a.m. and noon. It is conveniently located across the street from its own clinic. Pharmacist Phong Tan, KNFHT executive-director Marina Hodson and Ward 6 Coun. Doug Elmslie were on hand for the event. Tan emphasized it was a community initiative that he was happy to host in his business and gave special thanks to the Legion for its equipment donations. There is a reception area, consultation room and examination room. “This is huge for the community and the collaboration between Kawartha North, Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls has just done so much for health care in the two areas. People like Phong and the folks on the board of KNFHT have enabled us to do this,” Elmslie said. There is also a walk-in clinic at 100 East St. S. Bobcaygeon between 5 and 8 p.m, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you would like to show your financial support to the new walk-in clinic, you can make a donation and receive a charitable tax receipt.

COmmuniTy Cares March is Nutrition Month across Canada, and it’s a perfect time for Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes to promote its large basket of food and nutrition programs and services. The agency’s food and nutrition services include traditional programs such as Meals on Wheels and Diners Clubs, as well as newer initiatives that have recently been introduced as Community Care has expanded. Though Community Care programs such as hot and/or frozen meal delivery have traditionally been presented as serving seniors and people with special needs, most services are available for people of all ages. In the Bobcaygeon area, a large menu of frozen meals can be accessed through the local office at 71 Bolton St., and they can be purchased there, or arrangements can be made to have volunteers deliver to clients’ homes. Newer services include a monthly “Cooking for One” program designed to help people who

geTTing reaDy FOr BaByKaWarTha laKes – Parents-to-be can get back to class with the health unit to help prepare for the arrival of their new baby. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit provides free education programs

throughout the year to help parents. Starting in mid-March, and running again in May, the health unit is offering a multi-week class that helps expectant parents prepare for the birth of babies, as well as another one-time session focusing on breastfeeding. “A baby does not come with an owner’s manual, so that is why we encourage people to attend these programs to gain insight and information on becoming a parent,” says Cindy Hutchinson, a family health nurse with the health unit who will lead both classes. The health unit programs run as follows:• A Healthy Beginnings Prenatal Class starts on Mar.

13, and continues the following four Thursdays (Mar. 20, 27, Apr. 3 and 10) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. It also runs Thursday nights in May. It will help participants learn about labour and birth, transition to parenting, taking care of mom and baby and feeding babies. Pregnant women are encouraged to bring a support person. Each participant receives a free copy of the Healthy Beginnings pregnancy guidebook.

• A Preparation for Breastfeeding Class is set for Mar. 20 (6:30-8:30 pm), and again on May 8 (6:30-8:30 pm). It provides information about the importance of breastfeeding, how to get a great start with breastfeeding, and resources and supports in the community. Attending the class is ideal for all expectant parents, whether it is their first, second


or third child. Partners are encouraged to attend as well. Participants will also receive a free copy of the Breastfeeding Matters resource guide.

nOrThumBerlanD COunTy – One of Canada’s leading experts on workplace mental health is coming to Cobourg in April to make a business case for why organizations need to develop strategies for addressing a multi-billion-dollar problem. Mary Ann Baynton (www.maryannbaynton.ca) works with employers, organizations, unions and associations to improve, address and resolve mental health issues at work. Baynton is also author of Resolving Workplace Issues and co-author with Dr. Martin Shain of Preventing Workplace Meltdown: An Employer’s Guide to Maintaining a Psychologically Safe Workplace. “When you support employees in dealing with mental health issues, you help them stay productive and healthy. That’s good for the individual and the organization,” says Baynton. “Inaction on mental health issues may end up costing more in the long-run.” According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, it is estimated mental health problems affect one in five people and cost the Canadian economy approximately $50-billion every year.

Baynton will be the featured speaker at an all-day workshop entitled ‘Solutions 2 Work Stress: Strategies for Success’ taking place on April 9 at the Cobourg Lions Centre. The event is organized by the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit and the Workplace Wellness in Northumberland committee. “Mary Ann Baynton is renowned for assisting workplaces and their staff move beyond mental health problems to reclaim dignity, preserve civility, restore productivity and improve working lives,” says organizer Lisa van der Vinne, a health promoter with the HKPR District Health Unit. “We are very pleased that Mary Ann can share her expertise with workplaces in our area.” Cost for the workshop is $175 per person, which includes breakfast, lunch and morning/afternoon snacks. We raised more than $3,200 throughout the past year and were able to donate money to Sue McGill from our local food bank, the Kawartha North Family Health Team in Bobcaygeon, the Royal Canadian Legion ladies bursary program and the humane society. We are a small group of ladies who work diligently to raise money for the branch and our community. At a recent crib tournament, our ladies (Jessie Detweiller, Ruth Sheppard, Louise James and Willa Smithers) came in third out of 12 teams. Family Fun runraises $3000

A total of $3,000 has been raised for breakfast programs at the Fenelon Township Public School, Langton Public School and Ridgewood Public School following the Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club’s annual family fun run. Event chair Liz Phillips said a near-capacity crowd filled the Burnt River Community Centre for the finale after an amazing ride on Saturday, Feb. 15. The money was raised from registrations, raffles and silent auction. Special guests included mayor Ric McGee, councillors David Hodgson, Steve Strangway, Brian Junkin and founding club members for the 35th anniversary year. Phillips thanked business supporters, volunteers and groomer operators.

BOBCaygeOn - Settlers Village Quilters donated $1000 to the Bobcaygeon Food Bank in time for the Christmas Hamper program. The money was raised at the guild’s recent quilt show. The guild continues to support the Food Bank by collecting items throughout the year. As part of the guild’s outreach program, they make small quilts for children and collect toiletries which are then donated to the Women’s Outreach program. They also assist in making the quilt tops for the City of Kawartha Lakes Victoria’s Quilt program, which are then given to anyone in the area undergoing cancer treatment.

on Friday, February 21, 2014 in her 90th year. Predeceased by her husband the late Eric Brock. Loving

mother of Louise Urie (late Elroy), Ted, Karen Mackay (Eldon), Susan,

Dunc, and the late Jemmy Hutchinson. Survived by son-in-law Bill Hutchinson and special friends Butch McMahon and Dayle Mathews Very special

grandmother of Angie, Chris (Sherrie), Luke (Cindy), Jessica (Cole), and the late Matthew; Keith

(Tammy), Brent (Marcia), Billy (Leah), Melissa (Jamie), Brad and the late Bryan, Darren (Tammy), Brock and Laura. Great-grandmother of Conner,

Adam, Kennedy, Gates, Abigale, Colton, Mathew, Dunae, Alisha, Chloe, Kadri, Jaclyn, Brianne,

Alexandra, Adyson, Darby and Kyle. Dear sister of Ella Walters, Ernie (late Billie), Loreen Gravelle

(late Frank), predeceased by brothers Bill and Duke and sisters Leona Wright, Mary Woodward (Bill). Survived by brother-in-law Nellie Wright.

Doreen was an avid horse racing fan and lived life to the fullest. Memorial visitation was held at the

OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Friday February 28, 2014 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday, March 1st from 12:00 noon until time of Memorial Service in the

“Elva”Elva Anderson passed

away at Ross Memorial Hospital with her family by her side on Saturday, February 22nd, 2014 at the age of 87. Beloved

wife of Winston Anderson for 66 years. Mother of

John (Brenda) Anderson, Allan (Patty) Anderson, Morris (Sandra) Anderson, and Janice (Trevor) Jones,

all of Bobcaygeon. Grandmother of Mike (Kim), Julie, Wendy, David (Veronica), Jason (Melissa), Lisa (Darryl), and Jillian. Great-grandmother of Courtney,

Kylie, Heidi, Reese, Reegan, and Dawson. Sister of Merle (deceased) and her husband John Lawrie.

She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews. Family and friends were received at Monk Funeral

It is an honour to be asked to be this year’s Campaign Chairperson. Contributors to United Way make life altering, life changing impacts for individuals, families and our community.

Citizens of this community have worked together to build, nurture and support one another since 1967 through United Way. Aside from government funding, it is the leader in our community and now supports 44 vital programs which impact 1 in 3 citizens living in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Our villages, towns and hamlets are rich in possibilities. At the same time, we have our challenges. Building our communities person by person is possible when we come together to make a difference where we live.

A community that embraces all citizens with generosity and compassion is a place that many people envy. It is here on our doorstep. If you live work or play here, we need you to help make a difference in the lives of people we call neighbours, family and friends.

United Way’s role is changing so that it can tackle tough issues such as poverty, housing and youth engagement. As a donor, your commitment to building our community through United Way can offer hope, vision and positive change. You and I support 15 agencies and 44 programs. Your donation and mine stays right here in our community.

United Way is efficient because it operates mostly on volunteer manpower. United Way is accountable and makes giving simple through payroll deductions, online donation system, quarterly or monthly payments, planned gifts and Leadership Levels for corporations and individuals.
