WELCOME TO LANGE SCHOOL

LANGE HISTORY “We celebrate our history by appreciating our traditions. A shared sense of belonging to a special place inspires commitment to quality”. - Oakwood City School District Core Values adopted: 8/14/06 The Julian and Marjorie Lange School was made possible through the generosity of Rich and Kitty Lange when they authorized a bequest from the Lange Foundation in memory of Rich’s parents. Julian and Marjorie Lange were exemplary citizens of Oakwood who valued family, education, community, and service. Julian Lange was, himself, a graduate of Oakwood High School and his wife, Marjorie, devoted many years of volunteer service to the Oakwood Schools prior to their children’s graduations from Oakwood High School in the 1960’s. Lange School was officially dedicated on Sunday, August 20, 2000, after six months of remarkable volunteer service. Scores of Oakwood community members, students, graduates, staff members, and parents -- under the benevolent (yet vigilant) eye of former Superintendent, Dr. Judy Hennessey -- contributed incalculable hours and incredible creativity. We are especially grateful to the Oakwood Rotary, which has “adopted” Lange School. We have every confidence that our youngest learners, who are the beneficiaries of the Lange Family’s great generosity and the Oakwood Community’s indelible spirit, will embrace the legacy of service and commitment entrusted to them.

Our Mission…

Lange school, a child’s place, is a community of learners.

We nurture, respect, and inspire each other.

A Note To The Big People Kindergarten can be an especially exciting, yet difficult, time for a parent. We all want to be involved in our child’s education and want to help our children thrive during their first year of school. We want to protect them and make sure that school is a positive experience. Yet, this school experience may be new to us, too, and we may need some assistance in how “to do” school as an adult. The staff at Lange School wants to make sure that both you and your child have positive beginnings to your thirteen-year educational partnership with the Oakwood Schools. We’d like to offer four recommendations to help you get started.

1. Please read your entire Handbook. *We’ve tried to include pertinent information that will provide you with insight about school operations. Our rules and procedures have been created to ensure safety and to establish order and routine as one means of respecting the entire community of learners.

2. Please be active.

*Children love to know that their parents are helping at school. We want you to be involved and will give you plenty of opportunities to volunteer at Lange.

3. Please communicate frequently with the teachers.

*Be sure that you talk with the teachers when you have questions or concerns. If you would like to talk with a teacher, you should call the office to set up an appointment or to request that a teacher telephone you. Typically, teachers will not be able to call you back during the school day because they will be teaching. If you decide that you need to call a teacher at home, please call before 8:00 P.M. (Kindergarten teachers need their sleep!) You may also email the teachers directly. Remember: however, that our teachers may only check messages at the end of the day so do not expect an immediate reply from an email.

4. Please never go directly to your child’s classroom during the school day.

*Always stop in at the office, check in, and allow us to greet you. This helps us to keep our school safe as well as to protect the valuable time our teachers have with the students. If you are dropping something off, we will be happy to deliver it to the classroom.

Our School Day

Daily Schedule: Kindergarten Lunch Session 8:50 A.M.- 2:55 P.M. Group #1: 11:30-11:50 Group #2: 12:00-12:20 Group #3: 12:30-12:50 Lunch Lunch will be served according to the above captioned schedule. There are two options available to your child for lunch: A) either a packed lunch brought from home (no glass, plastic knives or carbonated beverages are permitted.); or B) the child may purchase a school lunch for the price of $2.75. Lunches available for purchase at school include: 1) A hot lunch (a monthly menu will be provided to your child); 2) A turkey sandwich; 3) a pre-made peanut butter & jelly sandwich. NOTE: On the provided menu, we ask that you indicate your child’s lunch choices for the day; i.e.: HL – Hot Lunch, T – Turkey, PBJ – uncrustable PBJ, P – Pack, M – Milk. If packing a lunch, milk is available for purchase at the cost of 50¢. The time allotted for lunch is 20 minutes. Recess will be held at different times for different classes, depending on the daily schedule, however it will generally be the ½ hour after lunch. We also want to make you aware of a change in the lunch procedures in the unlikely event of a two-hour delay for Oakwood City Schools. Due to time constraints, it will not be possible for us to provide a hot lunch for our Lange children. We will be offering a cold alternative: either peanut butter & jelly uncrustables or turkey & cheese sandwiches. These alternatives would be served with a fruit, vegetable and milk.

Transportation: Kindergarten There are three options for transporting your child to school. You may transport your child by private vehicle directly to the Lange School. You may also walk directly to the Lange School. You may walk/transport your child to his/her home elementary school and have him/her ride the shuttle to Lange School. The Kettering City Schools will provide the shuttle service. When walking to or from Lange School with children in strollers, we ask that you use the sidewalk along the outside of the building in order to ensure safety. Also, please note that riding bicycles and scooters is not permitted on school grounds. We do not have the facilities to store bikes during the school day. Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures If you drive your children to Lange, please arrive between 8:40-8:45 A.M. to avoid the shuttles’ arrival time. If you plan to leave your car -- even for “just a minute”-- please park in the back of school in designated parking areas. When parents pick up students, please come between 2:50-3:00 P.M. to avoid the shuttles’ departure from Lange. If you are truly just dropping off or picking up your child, please use the circular drive in the back of the building. Cars may not be left running and unattended at any time on the school grounds. • Shuttle Procedures It is important to remember that the shuttles must leave promptly from their two pick up points, Harman and Smith Elementary Schools. Families will need to plan carefully so that kindergartners walking with older siblings to their home school will arrive on time to ride the shuttle to Lange School. Kindergartners will arrive at their home schools and go to a designated waiting area where they will be greeted and supervised by a staff member. Children will board the shuttle and ride the short distance to Lange School, where, again, a staff member or parent volunteer will supervise their entry into the school and their classrooms. To facilitate childcare planning, parents must remember children may not arrive at their home schools prior to 8:25 A.M. Kindergartners must be picked up promptly when they return to their home school at the end of the school day. Unless we have received a written directive from a parent, our kindergartners will always be dismissed according to the LAST directive we received from the parents.

Shuttle Harman Smith Shuttle Harman Smith Departure Elementary 8:40 8:40 Leave Lange 3:00 3:00 Arrive at Lange 8:45 8:45 Return Elementary 3:05 3:05 NOTE: Bus Discipline Procedure – If a child receives 3 behavior strikes (to be determined by bus driver or adults riding bus) on the bus, they are removed for one week. Parents will be notified of each strike when it occurs.

Student Attendance We want your children to be with us regularly so that we can do our best to help them learn. However, we know that children do become ill and must miss periodically due to doctor’s appointments and to observe religious holidays. •Absences When a child must be absent from school, we ask that parents do the following: Call (299-8730) or email ([email protected]) the school office prior to 9:00 A.M. to inform us of your child’s absence. • For your convenience, you may leave a message on our voice mail the night

before or earlier in the morning. Please let us know if your child will be absent for more than one day. If you do not let us know of an extended absence, you will need to call each day your child is out.

• The Missing Child Act requires that we contact parents when a student is

absent from school. If you do not inform us of your child’s absence, we must place a call to you at home or at work. If we are unable to reach you, the District Practice is for us to call the Oakwood Police Dept.

In the event your child is absent for more than three days, please send a brief note of explanation to the homeroom teacher upon your child’s return to school. The note should include name, dates of absence, and reason (i.e. illness, vacation, etc.). This note allows us to confirm our school records. Thank you for your help. When possible, the office should be notified that a child is going to be absent prior to the absence. A written note delivered to the office will be sufficient. Parents/guardians of children who are absent more than ten (10) days during the school year will receive a letter from the principal with a copy placed in their supplemental records. Parents of children absent more than twenty (20) days during the school year will be required to attend a conference with the principal and child’s teacher. NOTE: It is considered an unexcused absence if you choose to keep your child home due to weather conditions and Oakwood City Schools remain open. Please call South Connection at 643-9314, as well as Lange School, if your child attends both programs.

•Tardiness Children arriving after 9:00 a.m. will be counted as tardy. Students arriving after 10:30 a.m. will be counted as absent for one-half day. Parents/guardians of children who are tardy more than ten (10) days during the school year will receive a letter from the principal with a copy placed in their supplemental records. Parents of children tardy more than twenty (20) days during the school year will be required to attend a conference with the principal and child’s teacher. If you know that your child will be tardy to school please contact the office and leave a message. Upon arrival at school:

1. Be sure that the child is checked in at the office. Do not go directly to the classroom. While at the office you will be asked to sign the late arrival log. Your child will be given a late admittance slip before we take him/her to class.

2. If your child had a doctor or dental appointment, please provide written

verification of the appointment. •Early Dismissals There are times when students will need to leave school prior to the normal dismissal times. When this is necessary, please remember the following:

1. Requests for early dismissal of a student should be in writing to your child’s classroom teacher. If a note is not possible, please contact the office by phone.

2. When picking up a child at school for an early dismissal, please come to the office and sign the early dismissal log. Please, do not go directly to your child’s classroom. This may unnecessarily disrupt the learning environment for the other students. Your child will meet you in the office.

•Vacations Kindergarten is a very important year in your child’s school experience. Lange School is required by the Ohio Department of Education to impart a significant amount of knowledge to your children based on the state mandated content standards. Instructional time at Lange School is 5 ½ hours per day. Therefore, it is extremely important that children miss as infrequently as possible as they will miss a significant amount of material and will be put at a disadvantage in the classroom. We realize families choose to take their children on vacation during the school year, but it is our hope that vacations be scheduled according to the school calendar. We also recognize that the need for family time together may not always fit the school schedule. Unfortunately, for vacations it is extremely difficult to prepare a "packet" or send work for children prior/during their vacation. Also, in order for a vacation to be considered an excused absence, it is necessary to submit a written plan of what the child will be doing that is educationally enriching, i.e. keeping a journal, drawing a picture of their activities, etc. Please contact the office for a copy of the procedures to be followed in the event school is missed due to vacations.

•Emergency Closings, Delays, Early Dismissals In the event of inclement weather or other emergencies that may necessitate a school closing, delay or early dismissal, the Oakwood City Schools will communicate with parents and students through the local media, web site, email, and the District’s OneCall Now System (details regarding this automated messaging system are found of page #22). The decision to close or delay school due to situations, which have occurred overnight, will usually be made before 6:30 A.M. When the Kettering Schools close, but the Oakwood Schools do not close, there will be no shuttle bus service and parents will be asked to transport their children to school. Additionally, if Oakwood and/or Kettering are delayed,

the usual school schedule and transportation will be altered according to the schedules contained in this Handbook. We have also experienced emergency situations, which necessitated that we dismiss school early. These situations are much more challenging to handle because they are completely unexpected. The decisions to close school due to situations that occur during the school day are made only when student health or safety is in jeopardy. To prepare for unexpected early dismissals due to emergencies, we recommend that families talk about what their plan will be in such a circumstance. Keep in mind that students may not be able to use the phones in some emergencies, and parents may not be able to reach the school because of busy or damaged phone lines. As our SCHOOL plan we will keep students here at school until one of the following scenarios occurs:

• A parent comes to pick up the child (it is very important that mom and dad coordinate this so there is no confusion), or

• A person listed on the office card you complete at the beginning of school

comes to pick up your child, or

• A parent contacts us and tells us that another person may take their child.

Medical Concerns

•Illness At School

When students become ill at school, either our school nurse or administrative assistant will provide care. When the conditions listed below occur, we will contact the parent to take the ill child home. Because the school has very limited space for accommodating multiple students who become ill during the school day, it is absolutely essential that parents make sure that arrangements are made and communicated to the school in the event your child is too sick to remain at school. We will make your child as comfortable as possible while here at school, but our clinic is not equipped or staffed to handle all-day care. Students will be sent home if any of the following symptoms are present: 1. Fever of 100 degrees or over. Sometimes a lesser temperature elevation accompanied with complaints of headache, stomachache, or diarrhea. 2. Nausea and/or vomiting 3. Skin rash (not seen by a doctor) 4. Coughing (excessive) 5. Reddened eyes (not seen by a doctor) The following guidelines should be observed:

1. Keep your child at home when ill, since children cannot learn at full capacity and most illnesses are of shorter duration if recognized and treated early.

2. Colds, fever, rash, reddened eyes or other signs may indicate a communicable disease. These symptoms should be checked before sending to school.

3. If your child has had a high fever of over 100 degrees and has had vomiting and/or diarrhea, allow 24 hours of a fever, vomiting, and diarrhea free period before sending back to school. Certain effects of illness remain after the temperature is normal.

4. Report cases of chicken pox and all contagious diseases to the school. 5. Students with fractures, serious illnesses such as mono, recent surgeries,

and chronic conditions, which restrict physical activity, must obtain written consent from a physician to participate in P.E. class.

•Communicable Diseases The school also has a vital role in the control of communicable diseases. Following local and state guidelines, students will be excluded during the period for communicability and/or until appropriate treatment by a physician has been received.

When your child may return to school: Chicken Pox Your child may return after 7 days including weekends if all scabs are dry. The other school age children in the family may attend school if they are well. Observe your child each morning for symptoms. Conjunctivitis (Pinkeye) Your child must be excluded from school until on antibiotics for 24 hours (if ordered) and discharge has ceased. Fifth Disease Your child may return after diagnosis and when fever-free for 24 hours. Head Lice Please notify the school immediately if your child has lice. Students will be excluded from school until treated and free of all live lice. The school nurse will check the student's hair before he/she may return to the classroom. Treat head lice with a prescription shampoo from your physician or with an over-the-counter treatment recommended by your pharmacist. Impetigo Your child will be excluded from school until released by physician or under treatment, and lesions are beginning to heal. Infectious Hepatitis Your child may return to school after the doctor’s release, but not before 7 consecutive days from the onset of jaundice.

Mononucleosis Consult a physician. Please keep your child home if he/she has a fever, is symptomatically ill, or has been advised to remain home by a physician. Ringworm or Athlete’s Foot Your child will be excluded from school until he/she is under treatment. Scabies Your child will be excluded from school until he/she is under treatment. You will have to consult a physician for prescription lotion. Scarlet Fever, Scarletina, and Strep Throat Your child may return to school 24 hours after treatment has started and after a 24-hour fever-free period.

•Immunizations For entrance into school, immunizations are required. The minimum requirements are: 5 DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) *If the 4th dose was administered after the 4th birthday, a 5th dose is NOT required.

4 TOPV (trivalent oral polio vaccine) *4 doses of any combination of OPV or IPV, the final dose must be administered on or after the 4th birthday regardless of the number of previous doses.

2 Rubella (Measles) *Must have been given after first birthday; must have actual date (day, month, year).

2 Rubella (3 day measles) *Must have been administered after first birthday. History of the disease is not sufficient.

2 Mumps *Must have been administered after first birthday.

Hepatitis B *Must have 3 hepatitis B shots.

Chicken Pox *Must have 2 doses administered prior to Kindergarten entrance or a documented history of having had the disease.

The requirements set forth above are minimum requirements. They do not constitute the full complement of immunizations that are recommended for pupils through grade 12. Note: For contaminated wounds, a tetanus booster is needed if it has been more than 5 years since the last vaccination. With clean minor wounds, no booster dose should be given unless 10 years have elapsed since the last one.

•Medication and Prescription Drug Policy When possible, administration of medication to students should be scheduled outside of school hours. If special circumstances require administration of medication during school hours, we are required to follow the same procedure for both prescription and non-prescription medication:

1. All situations requiring school administration of medication require written permission of the parent and the physician.

Forms for this purpose are available in the office and on the website. Both the parent and the physician must sign these forms before any school personnel are permitted to administer the medication.

2. All requests for administration of medication must include the name of the

medication, dosage, when administered, possible side effects, and the duration.

3. If the medication is given on a continuing basis, the forms must be renewed

annually.

4. The parent is responsible for providing the medication in the original container, bringing the medication to school, picking up any remaining medication at the end of the year (or when use is terminated), and notifying the school of any changes in the original order or change in doctors.

5. Students are not permitted to carry medication or keep medication in the

backpacks. Authorized staff members will administer all medication.

•Control of Blood-Borne Pathogens Oakwood City Schools seeks to provide a safe educational environment for students and take appropriate measures to protect those students who may be exposed to blood-borne pathogens in the school environment and/or during their participation in school-related activities. While the risks of students being exposed to blood borne pathogens may be low, students must assume that all body fluids are potentially infections and must take precaution to follow universal procedures in order to reduce such risks and minimize and/or prevent the potential for accidental infection. Whenever a student has contact with blood or other potentially infectious material, s/he must immediately notify his/her teacher, who will contact the District nurse, Mary Barnett. Proper requisite documentation will be completed subsequent to the event. The parents of a student who is exposed will be contacted immediately regarding the exposure and encouraged to have the student’s blood tested for Hepatitis B and HIV either by his/her physician or Montgomery County Health Services. The student’s parents are encouraged to consult with the student’s physician concerning any post-exposure treatment. The student’s parent/s will also be asked to provide a copy of the test results and any post-exposure treatment for maintenance in the student’s educational record in accordance with the Federal and State laws concerning confidentiality.

Home-School Communications

1. To share general announcements, policies, and procedures, we rely heavily upon electronic communication via WEBSITES (both teacher & Lange School websites) and E MAIL.

2. Teacher newsletters and monthly Lange School newsletters will be sent electronically unless you request a paper copy.

3. We expect the children to deliver these communications to you and urge you to take time to read them.

4. In addition to regular school newsletters, there will be periodic flyers, memos and announcements.

5. Communication of a personal nature is addressed via conferences, telephone contacts, written notes, and email.

•Teacher Contact Parents wishing to contact teachers during the school day should use the following procedures. Please keep in mind that our teachers may not be able to get back with you until after the teaching day is over.

1. Telephone the office to schedule an appointment or to request that a teacher telephone you.

2. Email the teacher directly. Please note: This should not be used for emergencies. Our teachers are busy working with the children and may not check messages until the end of the day.

If you feel that you need to contact a teacher at home after school hours, please call before 8:00 P.M.

Page 26: The Julian and Marjorie Parent/Student Handbook/Directory ... · The Julian and Marjorie Lange School Parent/Student Handbook/Directory 2017-2018 219 West Dorothy Lane Dayton, OH

22

•Teacher Newsletters Our teachers rely upon a monthly newsletter to keep you updated on class activities. Your child’s teacher will let you know what to expect. The teachers’ newsletters are also posted on their websites. •Important Papers Important papers will often come home with your child. We ask that you read all these communications and respond accordingly. Please check your child’s backpack daily. If we need to prepare two sets of informational packets to accommodate your family’s circumstances, please let us know. •Email, Web Site and OneCall Now Notification System More frequently, we are taking advantage of these electronic modes of communication.

1. Email address for teacher: [email protected]

2. Web site: www.oakwoodschools.org 3. The OneCall Now Notification System: OneCall Now is a specialized voice message delivery system that allows us to record a message and send it to all of our Lange families and staff. It provides us with an effective notification system in the event of last minute scheduling changes, emergencies and major event reminders.

•Parent’s Night There is a Parent’s Night scheduled on September 7th in order to give parents the opportunity to meet teachers, handle paperwork requirements, and tour the school. We look forward to seeing parents there. •Progress Reports Our teachers make parent-teacher communication a high priority. We know that our students benefit when parents and teachers form positive relationships that include frequent communication. In addition to regular communication from teachers, parents can expect to receive quarterly progress information about their child. In November, the end of the first quarter, our teachers will conduct parent-teacher conferences, allowing parents an opportunity to discuss their child’s progress. (Parents sign up for the fall conferences at the Parent’s Night in September.) At the end of the semester, the second quarter, parents will receive a progress report (via backpack) identifying progress the student is making toward expected outcomes. The end of the third quarter a writing rubric will be sent home showing your child’s progress towards meeting grade level benchmarks. At year’s end, parents will receive a final progress report (via backpack) identifying performance levels and designated areas of need as well as a recommendation for grade placement for the following school year. Additionally, if parents are concerned about their child’s progress at any point during the school year, a conference can be scheduled at a mutually agreed upon date. Finally, teachers use notes, phone calls, emails, work folders, etc. to keep parents informed of student progress. •Promotion/Retention of Students The promotion/retention of students in Kindergarten is based upon the best interests of the students. The first consideration for student retention is failure to meet at least minimum levels of knowledge and skills on District curricula. We have found that success on the curricula is influenced by student attendance rates. Secondly, the decision requires input from parents, principal, teachers and other intervention team members.

Gifted Identification and Services The Oakwood Board of Education has adopted a policy, in accordance with Ohio Revised Code 3324.01-3324.07 and Ohio Administrative Code, for identifying children who are gifted. The state mandates that all students have the opportunity to be assessed for possible "giftedness" based on the state's specific definition of giftedness, which follows:

• Children who perform or show potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment and who are identified in the areas of superior cognitive domain, specific academic domain (math, science, social studies, reading/writing), creative thinking domain, and/or visual/performing arts domain (visual arts, music, dance, drama).

The District uses an approach of assessment and identification to identify students who perform, or show potential for performing, at high levels of accomplishment in these domains. To be identified as "gifted" a student must achieve the requisite cutoff score on an assessment instrument authorized by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), which sets cutoff scores. Children may participate in either whole-grade assessment or referral-based assessment. Whole-grade level assessment occurs at grades 2, 4, and 6 in Oakwood City School District. For referral-based assessment, children may be referred for possible gifted identification on an ongoing basis based upon child request (self-referral), teacher recommendation, parent/guardian request, child referral of peer, or other referral. Referral forms are available in the school offices, Gifted Intervention Specialists’ offices, and counselors’ offices. While the State of Ohio requires that students have the opportunity to be assessed for giftedness, it does not require districts to provide services for students who are identified as gifted. Through local tax dollars, Oakwood employs Gifted Intervention Specialists (GIS) who assist teachers at Lange, Harman, Smith, and the Junior/Senior High Schools in working with students identified as gifted.

Page 29: The Julian and Marjorie Parent/Student Handbook/Directory ... · The Julian and Marjorie Lange School Parent/Student Handbook/Directory 2017-2018 219 West Dorothy Lane Dayton, OH

25

The gifted services revolve around instructional activities for students who have been identified in each of the four domains of giftedness defined by the State of Ohio. The District ensures equal opportunity for all students identified as gifted to receive services offered by the District. Differentiated instruction in the classroom is the linchpin of the program. Differentiated instruction requires modifying process, content, or product according to student need, readiness, and interest, and it is often performed in consultation with the Gifted Intervention Specialist. Our instructional program at all levels continues to evolve in order to meet the needs of our learners, and annually revised gifted services matrices are available from the Gifted Intervention Specialists. At the Kindergarten level, enrichment services are provided for students in the form of differentiation within the regular classroom, with consultation from our Intervention Specialist and the elementary Gifted Intervention Specialists. Differentiation is based on student need as identified by the teacher. Nonetheless, some parents/guardians of Kindergarteners elect to refer their children for gifted evaluation. To do so, parents/guardians should pick up a referral form from the Lange School office, complete it, and return the form to the office. A meeting will then be scheduled with our Lange Intervention Specialist to discuss the testing process.

General Information •Guidance and Counseling Services Professional school counselors are certified/licensed professionals with a masters’ degree or higher in school counseling or the substantial equivalent and are uniquely qualified to address the developmental needs of all students. Professional school counselors deliver a comprehensive School Counseling program encouraging all students’ academic, career and personal/social development and helping all students in maximizing student achievement. The Oakwood Elementary Guidance counselor serves three buildings: Lange, E.D. Smith, and Harman. The counselor primarily delivers short-term solution focused services. If longer-term counseling services are needed, the counselor can assist families with making referrals. Counseling: Includes individual, small group, classroom guidance, and career education. Consultations with parents, staff and community providers are common on matters related to academic success, personal, social, and emotional issues. Confidentiality: The relationship between the student and counselor is a confidential one. The student client is entitled to privacy about personal matters. However, there are limits to confidentiality, which include situations where there is risk of danger. If there is suspicion that the student could harm him or herself, is in danger of being abused or neglected, or could be of risk to others, the counselor is legally and ethically bound to report this to the proper adults to investigate and take protective action if warranted. Parents or legal guardians are entitled to general information about the nature of the problem and counseling interventions. Since many of the concerns brought to counseling by a student relate to situations where teacher or caring adults in the child’s life need to be involved in making changes to benefit the student, permission to involve these adults is frequently requested and received. For more information, please refer to the FERPA section of this handbook. To request service: Appointments can be requested by writing a note or calling the office. Often referrals are made by teachers, parents, or principals.

•Special Services/Response to Intervention Team Oakwood City elementary schools offer a variety of special services for students who have special educational needs. These services include guidance counselor, English Language Learners (ELL) tutor, school psychologist, intervention specialist, speech therapist, and teacher assistants for special needs students. Home tutoring services are also available for students whose illness would prevent their class attendance for an extended period of time. Contact the building principal or your child’s classroom teacher for more information. A building level RtI team will meet to intervene on behalf of students needing assistance for academic or social concerns. Students may be referred to RtI (Response to Intervention) by parents and/or teachers. Contact the building principal or your child’s teacher for more information.

•Child Abuse Reporting School employees are required by law to report any evidence of child abuse or neglect to the Montgomery County Children’s Services or the local law enforcement officials.

•Disaster Drills Procedures for disaster drills are posted in each classroom. Fire drills are held once per month. Tornado drills are held during the months of March, April, and May. Safety drills are conducted once per semester. Students are expected to participate in a quiet and orderly fashion during all drills. In the event of a Tornado Warning issued by the National Weather Service in effect at dismissal times, students will be held in the building until the warning expires unless released to the parents.

•Instructional Materials Upon request, parents have the right to inspect any instructional material used as a part of the educational curriculum for their student. See Board Policy 2416 for the procedures for making such a request.

Page 32: The Julian and Marjorie Parent/Student Handbook/Directory ... · The Julian and Marjorie Lange School Parent/Student Handbook/Directory 2017-2018 219 West Dorothy Lane Dayton, OH

28

•Recess – “In Days” and “Out Days” Recess will be conducted outside unless extreme weather prohibits it. Students will be kept indoors during rainy weather, extreme heat or when the temperature or chill factor is 20 degrees or below. Because we will strive to conduct recess outside, it is important that students be dressed properly for the weather. •Toys Toys from home are not permitted unless it is a designated classroom show and tell and/or theme day. Additionally, please note that we are a Pokemon Card free zone at Lange School and on the bus. The trading and showing of cards becomes a distraction to our learning environment and also causes many tears on the bus.

•Birthday Treats/Party Invitations Since birthdays are important, we happily allow children to bring a simple treat on their birthdays. We prefer finger foods (cookies, brownies, marshmallow treats, fruit, etc.), and we ask that you provide napkins. Lange School is also a FROSTED-CUPCAKE FREE ZONE. (Cupcakes without icing or muffins are acceptable.) Also consider that we have a number of students with food allergies. For example, several of our children experience severe allergic reactions to peanut products. Therefore, please check with your child’s teacher before baking or purchasing class treats. ADDITIONALLY, we ask that you do not send in party favors of any kind. You might want to consider donating a book to the classroom in lieu of edible treats. The book could be inscribed by the birthday child with his or her name and birthday. The child would have the memory of his/her book being added to the classroom collection, and it will be enjoyed by many future generations. This would also help us add to our classroom collection of childhood favorites. Children with summer birthdays may choose to celebrate one day during the school year. Parents need to make arrangements with the teacher in advance. Feelings are easily hurt in Kindergarten, many times accidentally. Invitations to private parties may only be distributed at school if all class members are invited.

Page 33: The Julian and Marjorie Parent/Student Handbook/Directory ... · The Julian and Marjorie Lange School Parent/Student Handbook/Directory 2017-2018 219 West Dorothy Lane Dayton, OH

29

•Dress Code We are very active in Kindergarten and want your child to be as comfortable as possible. Students should come to school dressed appropriately for the weather and the day’s activities. You should expect us to spend some time outside on most days. We recommend that students not wear flip-flops, sandals without socks, or pants with cut out knees, as playground play can be hard on feet and knees. Kindergarten activities can also be messy at times. Keep this in mind when dressing your child in the morning. Mrs. Osterfeld, our Kindergarten Physical Education Teacher (P.E.), requests that each student wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes on P.E. days (Wednesdays & Fridays).

•Parking We have seven parking spaces in front of the school, one of which is identified as handicap accessible. The remainder of our parking is in the rear of school. During major school events and meetings, parking is available at St. Albert the Great School located across the street.

•Walking When walking to or from Lange School with children in strollers, we ask that you use the sidewalk alongside of the outside of the building in order to ensure safety.

•PTO There is no “official” PTO at Lange. We do not intend to participate in formal fund raising projects with the exception of a Book Fair and school pictures.

Page 34: The Julian and Marjorie Parent/Student Handbook/Directory ... · The Julian and Marjorie Lange School Parent/Student Handbook/Directory 2017-2018 219 West Dorothy Lane Dayton, OH

30

•School Fees To help offset the cost of consumable materials and supplies, we charge a per student fee of $50 in Kindergarten. Fees are payable during the first week of school. If you find that, due to financial difficulties, you cannot pay your child's school fees, please contact the school principal or the Board of Education (297-5332) to request a possible waiver of these fees. Additionally, lunch is priced at $2.75 and milk is 40¢.

•Supplies Kindergarten is very active and hands-on. We do not require families to purchase crayons, writing utensils, etc. as the school purchases these items for our emergent writers. We want all writing supplies to be the same to facilitate consistent instruction. However, the following supplies will be necessary: 1 box of tissues 1 tote bag or regular sized backpack (no preschool sized backpacks) Because we are teaching responsibility for one's belongings (and because we'd like to get papers home to you), it is important that each child bring a backpack daily. The backpack, as well as coats and other belongings, should be identified clearly with the child’s name. This will save time in locating lost items later. It would be great if you had a special place at home for keeping the backpack and a special time to empty it each day. This will help your child begin to assume responsibility for getting notes and important papers home to you, and it will keep you abreast of happenings here at Lange School.

Page 35: The Julian and Marjorie Parent/Student Handbook/Directory ... · The Julian and Marjorie Lange School Parent/Student Handbook/Directory 2017-2018 219 West Dorothy Lane Dayton, OH

31

•Traffic Flow When you drop-off or pick-up students you must go to the rear of the building and follow the traffic flow indicated by the arrows. Please do not plan to leave the car -- even for just a moment. If you must leave your car for any reason, you MUST park in a designated parking place. When picking up your child, please display your child’s name card on the dashboard so that we may make a quick identification. When you plan to come in the building -- even for just a moment--please park in a designated parking space either in the front or rear of the building. Our shuttle bus picks up and drops off the children in the front of the building. If you are in your vehicle and have picked up or dropped off your child at the rear of the building and are ready to exit Lange School, it is necessary to wait until the bus has departed before proceeding out of Lange School. It is extremely important for the safety of our children to NEVER, under any circumstances, attempt to 1) go around the bus when it is parked in front of the school loading children or 2) go out of Lange School against the flow of traffic (the left driveway) and 3) please turn off cellular phones. Please ALWAYS follow the directional arrows. •Visiting Lange School Please use the front entrance when you visit us at Lange, sign-in and obtain a visitor’s badge. (Please note that all doors are locked and you will be let in by office personnel.) We ask that you never go directly to your child’s classroom. Our Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Nanci Koepke, will be happy to direct you to South Connection or Kindergarten programs.

•Students Moving From the District If you plan to move out of our attendance area, please notify the school office as soon as possible and a withdrawal form will need to be completed and placed in your child’s cum file. Additionally, a release of records form must be completed before records can be sent to another school district.

Page 36: The Julian and Marjorie Parent/Student Handbook/Directory ... · The Julian and Marjorie Lange School Parent/Student Handbook/Directory 2017-2018 219 West Dorothy Lane Dayton, OH

•Volunteers Lange uses many volunteers each week. There are opportunities to assist in the school library, the cafeteria, playground and other special times during the school year. “Job descriptions” and sign-ups are available during KRA week (Aug. 18-20), Parents’ Night (Sept. 10th) or by stopping into the Lange Office. The building newsletter will also act as a means of seeking volunteers for special projects. The use of volunteers will be coordinated through the office, Sign-Up Genius and/or classroom teachers. A volunteer training session is required (schedules of training sessions will be announced periodically throughout the school year). Volunteers who work regularly with students, and those who work with students in an unsupervised area will be required to provide fingerprints. This can be done at the Board office and at no cost to volunteers.

•Surveys The Board of Education respects the privacy rights of parents and their children. No student shall be required, as a part of the school program or the District’s curriculum, without prior written consent of the student, (if a student is an adult, or an emancipated minor or parents), to submit to or participate in any survey, analysis, or evaluation that reveals information concerning:

A. the students’ or parents’ political affiliation(s); B. mental or psychological problems of the student or his/her family; C. sex behavior or attitudes; D. illegal, anti-social, self-incriminating or demeaning behavior; E. critical appraisals of other individuals with whom respondents have close

family relationships; F. legally recognized privileged and analogous relationships, such as those of

lawyers, physicians, and ministers; G. religious practices, affiliations, or beliefs of the student or his/her

parents; or H. income (other than that required by law to determine eligibility for

participation in a program or for receiving financial assistance under such a program).

Upon request, parents have the right to inspect a survey created by a third party before the survey is administered or distributed by the school to its students. See Board Policy 2416 concerning the procedures for making such a request.

Student Records

•Confidentiality of Records Parents may review the academic and official records of their children. These records have both non-classified and classified information included therein. The directory data (part of the non-classified information) includes the student’s name, parent’s name, address, telephone listing, date and place of birth, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of member of athletic teams, attendance record, and most recent school attended. Classified information includes test results, grades, evaluations, etc. The schools Administrative Assistants are responsible for the maintenance of academic records. The remaining non-classified data and all classified data remains confidential except to the student, the parent, or the staff member who has a responsibility for the educational program of that student. For the classified contents of a record to be released, the parent must sign a waiver. In the examination of records, any materials determined to be inaccurate, misleading or inappropriate shall be corrected, deleted, or a written explanation inserted by the parent. Records are first challenged to the person responsible for their maintenance, then to the principal, and then to the Superintendent of Schools.

•Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Any parent or student who believes that the School District has failed to comply with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) or the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA), may file a complaint directly with the Family Policy Compliance Office, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20202-5920.

34

•Directory Information Each year the Superintendent shall provide public notice to students and their parents of the District’s intent to make available, upon request, certain information known as “directory information.” The Board designates as student “directory information”: a student’s name; address; telephone number; date and place of birth; photograph; major field of study; participation in officially-recognized activities and sports; height and weight, if a member of an athletic team; dates of attendance; date of graduation; awards received; honor rolls; scholarships, telephone numbers only for inclusion in school or PTO directories or email addresses. Directory information shall not be provided to any person or organization for profit-making purposes. Parents and adult students may refuse to allow the District to disclose any or all of such "directory information" upon written notification to the principal. In accordance with Federal and State law, the Board shall release the names, addresses, and telephone listings of secondary students to recruiting officers for (1) any branch of the United States Armed Forces and (2) any institutions of higher education who request such information. A secondary school student or parent may request in writing that the student’s name, address, and telephone listing not be released without prior consent of the parent(s)/adult student. The Board may disclose “directory information” regarding former students without student or parental consent.

•Educational Records Because personal privacy is important, each year the Oakwood Schools maintain and publish policies that outline District procedures for the collection and use of student cumulative records. Federal law also governs these policies. Please call the school principal if you have any questions. Definition "Educational Records" include any records, which contain information directly related to a student and are maintained by Oakwood City Schools or by a person acting for the Oakwood City Schools. However, "educational records" do not include: 1) records which are maintained by school personnel and which are not accessible or revealed to any other person except a substitute, or 2) records maintained in the normal course of business which relate exclusively to the student as an employee of Oakwood City Schools. Access to Student Records Student records shall be available only to students and their parents, designated school officials, and designated school personnel, who have a legitimate educational interest in the information, or to other individuals or organizations as permitted by law. An individual will have a “legitimate educational purpose” if the record is necessary in order for the school official/employee to perform an administrative, supervisory, or instructional task or to perform a service or benefit for the student or the student’s family. Parents and students may meet with a professional staff member to review the contents of the records. Requests for a records review conference must be in writing and will be scheduled within 45 days.

Release of Student Records

1. Student records may be released to officials of other schools or school systems in which the student intends to enroll, without written permission, upon condition that a reasonable attempt is made to notify the student’s parents of the transfer, of their right to receive a copy of the record if desired, and of their right to have a hearing to challenge the content of the record.

2. No information may be furnished in any form to any other persons than listed above unless in compliance with a judicial court order or subpoena or by written parental consent specifying records to be released, the reasons for such release, and to whom. In such cases, parents and students have the right to receive a copy if desired.

3. All persons, agencies, or organizations desiring access to records shall be required to sign a written release specifically indicating the legitimate educational or other interest each has in seeking the information. This form shall be kept permanently with the file of the student.

4. Both parents shall have equal access to student records unless stipulated otherwise by court order or law. In the case of adult students, parents may be allowed access to the records without the student’s consent, provided the student is considered a dependent under Section 152 of the Internal Revenue Code.

Right to Challenge

Student Code of Conduct

All students attending the Oakwood City Schools are expected to conduct themselves in a manner reflecting a basic belief in the worth and dignity of every person. Therefore, any behavior which could reasonably be expected to result in harm to one's self or to another person, which is destructive of property, which disrupts school activities, or which tends to conflict with respect inherent in this basic principle, is prohibited. • Classroom Discipline Plan Each teacher will develop a classroom discipline plan. The plan will contain class rules, and both negative and positive consequences. Rules and expectations for student behavior will be discussed in detail with the students. The written code will be displayed prominently in the room. A letter to parents explaining the classroom plan will be sent home sometime during the first weeks of school. • School Rules While under the jurisdiction of the school, any behavior, which could ultimately result in harm to one's self or another, damage of school property or damage to the property of another, or any activity that interferes with one’s own or another’s learning is prohibited.

• We expect our students to respect one another and all adults who work with them here at Lange School. No student may knowingly be disrespectful to an adult.

• We expect our students to respect the learning environment here at Lange. Rough or boisterous activities (such as running and wrestling, as well as the throwing of objects) are prohibited while in the building.

• Truancies from school are in violation of the compulsory attendance laws.
