The Joy of ArtLa alegría del arte
Throughout history, art has tendered affirming feelings of love, happiness, and hope. This exhibition focuses on these positive emotions during a time of pestilence through the creativity of seven artists that germinates from a “Joy of Art.”
I invite you to witness the exuberance of Sandra Murphy-Pak’s swirling colors; the delight of nature in the photography of the Wheelchair Highwaymen; the splendor of Chris Mendicino’s icy blooms; the glee of Megan Holmes Cameron’s self-portraits; the rapture seen in Pariswinkle’scharacters; the majesty of nature painted by Adorable Monique; and the enchantment of Madison Hongyee’s vision.
The work in this exhibition brings to mind words written by Vincent Van Gogh to his brother Theo in 1888 as he expressed his ideas about using color, “ I am always in hope of making a discovery . . . to express the love of two lovers . . . by the mysterious vibrations of kindred tones. To express hope by some star, the eagerness of a soul by a sunset radiance. Certainly there is no delusive realism in that, but isn’t it something that actually exists?”
As Van Gogh did more than 130 years ago, the artists here signal hope for our world through the joy of art.

A lo largo de la historia, el arte ha tendido a afirmar sentimientos de amor, felicidad y esperanza. Esta exposición se enfoca en estas emociones positivas durante un momento de pestilencia a través de la creatividad de siete artistas que germina de una "Alegría del arte".

When I set to work, I am drawing from my own internal universe, out from my right foot, and onto the canvas. The viewer, by resting the eye on the black center, might envision a portal into another dimension, a place of rest within the eternal movement of life. The action of the circle centers around the still point – our individual consciousness.

Cuando me puse a trabajar, estoy dibujando desde mi propio universo interno, desde mi pie derecho y hacia el lienzo. The creative process is cathartic for Madison and her creations provide the viewer with pure joy. Watching Madison draw is mesmerizing and I know there are many others who would benefit from her creativity.

Art often make me feel quite joyful; it’s very relaxing when I can just sit by myself in a quiet room with a candle, listening to music and sketching or painting. Something about that is just incredibly soothing to me.

Wheelchair HighwaymenWe are three friends with a shared common denominator (paralysis). All three of us are nature enthusiasts who found a way, like all people with disabilities, to overcome obstacles. In this case, our obstacle was how to “better” revel in mother nature and to preserve and share our experiences with others. We see our drone nature photography as a healthy and accessible leisure activity with a focus on community service and advocacy for the disabled. We hope that each of you can enjoy our experiences as much as we did!

The smile on Chris’ face when he captures something beautiful and pleasing to him indicates the personal satisfaction he gets from creating his art. Sometimes, the smile is accompanied by a song or a hum as he takes the different angles of the subject with his camera. It is a relaxing and engaging activity that brings him the simple joys of life.

Megan Holmes CameronCreating can bring joy through the opportunity to connect and be in the world in a different way. It may be the silliness of creating a giant paper mâché head, or painting huge flowers on a garden shed, or sending good buddies wonky drawings to let them know you are thinking of them and they matter. These may be the things that get us through and bring some lightness when it's going really rough.
I love this quote by artist Corita Kent, "It is a huge danger to pretend that awful things do not happen. But you need enough hope to keep going. I am trying to make hope. Flowers grow out of darkness."
Megan Holmes CameronCrear puede traer alegría a través de la oportunidad de conectarse y estar en el mundo de una manera diferente. Puede ser la tontería de crear una cabeza de papel maché gigante o pintar flores enormes en el cobertizo de un jardín o enviar a los buenos amigos dibujos extravagantes para hacerles saber que estás pensando en ellos y que importan.
