The thing about true worship is, once you have experienced it, you don’t want to go back to anything less. So what’s different over the last several weeks? For my article this month, I want to take the opportunity to say thank you to all of you

who have been praying for me concerning my recent health issues. For those of you who don’t

know what happened or what is going on, allow me to share.

I went for my annual physical back in early August. Through routine testing, it was

discovered that my blood sugar level was abnormally high. Subsequent testing over the

following three weeks revealed that I have Type 2 Diabetes. As word has got around, the

general reaction I’ve received from people is shock (I can relate… I was pretty shocked

myself). The second most popular response has been, “How??? You’re young… You’re thin…

(thank you!).” Honestly, I don’t know what caused it. It could stem from genetics. It could have

been the result of 30+ years of drinking multiple glasses of Dr. Pepper / Pepsi / Coke or sweet

tea per day. For all I know, it could be revenge for all those times I made fun of those Wilford

Brimley commercials. At this point, how I got it isn’t so much as important as where do I go

from here.

What got me the most was a statistic I read about the severe increase of heart disease

that diabetes causes. As someone who has a family history of it, that statistic alone was enough

to realize that some changes needed to be made.

In thinking theologically about all of this, I’m reminded of 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 which

says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom

you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore

honor God with your bodies.” This passage can be interpreted a number of ways, but one way

that hits home right now is that I need to do more to take care of this temple that is my body. It

means that I need to eat healthier, exercise more, and focus on doing the things that help my

body instead of hurt it. When we do this, we honor God with our bodies and fulfill the practice

of loving the Lord our God with all our strength (Deuteronomy 6:4).

So from all of this, I want to encourage you to practice loving God with all your strength

and take care of the temple of the Holy Spirit that is your body. I don’t know what that might

look like for you, but you do. So this month, take some time to examine your habits as far as

eating, working and exercising are concerned. Are there any changes that need to be made? If

so, do them, so that you may honor God with your body.

Blessings,

Rich

Policy Statement on Marriage, Sexuality, and Facility Usage

Because of the recent Supreme Court opinion on same sex marriage, both the Southern Baptist

Convention and the North Carolina Baptist State Convention have recommended that local

churches have a policy in place with regard to marriage, sexuality, and facility usage. A draft

policy statement was developed and has been prayerfully reviewed by the deacons and the

church staff for the past few months. This policy statement comes as a unanimous

recommendation from the deacons to the church for consideration. A letter of explanation and

the draft policy will be mailed to each church family the first week in October. On Sunday,

October 11, paper copies will be available at the worship service for anyone who did not

receive the mailed copy. On Sunday, October 18 at the end of the worship service, time for

discussion and questions will be provided. If the church is ready, we will vote to include the

policy in the JHBC Manuel of Policies and Procedures. The Deacons request that each of you

prayerfully study and consider this policy for adoption by JHBC.

Dear Friend,

Thank you for your monetary

donation. You’re making it possible

for spiritually starving souls at home and around

the world to receive their very own copy of God’s

Word! It’s a privilege for American Bible Society

to partner with you to bless many who desperately

need God’s Word. When we place Bibles in the

hands of people around the world, we are sharing

a priceless gift! Scripture offers the message of

God’s love and His eternal plan for salvation

through His Son, Jesus Christ! That is why your

support of American Bible Society is so critical.

CITY ON A HILL NEWS

From David, Heather and Jyoti Webb

Greetings from the hills of Mussoorie. The daily rains are over and

we are having more sunny days than clouds.

On September 3rd, we had our date in court for our adoption case.

Jyoti did great and the judge unexpectedly gave final approval to our

adoption! We thought there would be another hearing after that one to

conclude the case. Needless to say, we are full of joy that the case is over.

We are now waiting for the court to generate all of the orders so we can

begin the process of obtaining Jyoti’s Indian Passport. There will likely be a

two year period before we can obtain an U.S. immigrant visa for Jyoti. We want to thank our JHBC

family for all of your prayer support through this journey. Also, thanks for your generosity in giving

Jyoti a welcome “shower” through your contributions.

Also in September, we helped lead a retreat for the grade 9 to 12 students on Servant-

Leadership. There was a good response from the students on learning how Jesus led by being a servant.

The students ended the time with a session where they lifted each other up by recognizing the gifts for

leadership of each student. We felt that the students truly grew in their faith over the weekend. This is

the first of five retreats we will be involved with leading this year.

At the school Chapel service, both Heather and David spoke. David gave a message based on

Psalm 46 on prayer and understanding God’s plan. As part of the service, Heather shared how she was

healed in 2011 through the power of prayer. She told the story of how she was sick and had to come

back to the U.S. for medical treatment before the school term was finished. We still give thanks to how

JHBC supported us through that time of trial.

In October, we will have our activity week trips in the middle of the month. Heather will be

staying at home as both she and Jyoti will have day trips away from school. David will be camping and

doing hiking and other activities for 5 days with the grade 6 class. At the end of the month, we will

assist with the grade 3 and 4 retreat. Please pray that all of these opportunities to speak into the lives of

our students will be blessed and seeds will be planted.

Dear Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church,

Lee County Schools would like to express

sincere appreciation for your monetary donation

to be used in obtaining an eye exam/ glasses for

one of our students. Poor eyesight is a major

barrier to learning. It is very rewarding to see a

child’s face when their vision has been corrected

and they are able to see instructional materials

as well as beauty of nature.

Thank you for caring for our students. Your

donation will help remove a major obstacle to

learning for one of our students. Lee County

Schools is very fortunate to be surrounded by a

community which cares so much for our

students.

Dear Rev. Sayles,

I write on behalf of our organization, the Baptist

gratefully acknowledge your church family’s recent

thoughtful monetary contribution to the ministry of our

underwrite the cost of providing care to Older Adults

living across this state who cannot afford to pay for the

quality institutional services that they both need and

deserve. Please know that our staff and residents state-

wide will be thinking about you and your church family

as you begin your Fall activities...wishing for you

continued success in your ministry.

NEWS FROM WMU

All of our groups are back learning about and doing missions with the start of the new church year. We have a new Acteens group that is meeting each Wednesday evening at 6:00 PM at the church along with the Mission Friends, GA's and RA's meeting each Wednesday at 6:45 PM. There is a group for everyone!! Two projects that we are supporting include BUNDLES OF HOPE and the RED BOX MINISTRY.

“BUNDLES OF HOPE” is a new joint ministry of the Sandy Creek Baptist Association (SCBA)! The purpose of this ministry is to assist in “covering” the diaper needs in Lee and Chatham Counties. The National Diaper Bank Network defines “diaper need” as “the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby clean, dry and healthy." The host sites for the diaper pantry are Hunt Springs Baptist Church and Sandy Branch Baptist Church. Diapers are distributed on Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. A box for collection and “Bundles of Hope” brochures, including an application to receive diapers is now available outside the Bullock-Matthews Room. Please think of these babies and give generously through the months of September, October and November by buying diapers (any size) and bringing in coupons for diapers to assist in purchasing diapers. Monetary donations are welcome as well.

This year SCBA WMU is responsible for 400 (8 ounce to 11 ounce) size plastic bottles of lotion (no pumps!) for the RED BOX MINISTRY which will reach approximately 1,700 women inmates in NC at Christmas. Please have your donations in the Christmas box outside the nursery by Wednesday, October 21 or deliver to the Association office by Friday, October 23. If you have any questions see Mary Hawley Oates. It is not too soon to be thinking about our International Missions Emphasis and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Our goal for this year is $5,000.

On Thursday, September 3, our JHBC Baptist Men constructed a ramp on Summit Avenue. The request for the ramp came from the NC Baptist Aging Ministry. We thank Randy Angel for being the experienced carpenter on-site for this activity. Thanks for the help from everyone who came to the site. We have requests for two (2) more ramps and will be asking for help from our JHBC men. The speaker for our September 28th meeting was Ms. Caroline Farmer from the NC Attorney General’s Office. Her topic for the evening was “Scams, Identity Theft and Online Fraud”. Our October meeting will be held on Monday, October 26 with Mr. Rich Kirik. Mr. Kirk was a charity worker in Nepal during the recent earthquake. He has photos of the disaster and presents an interesting program. All are welcome to come for dinner and/or the program. Please sign up to reserve your plate.
