FROM THE PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE . .
Though the calendar says it’s fall, as I’m writing this article, it still doesn’t feel like fallhas fallen! Nevertheless, it’s here. And things are in full swing here at Jonesboro HeightsBaptist Church.
Mission Jonesboro is up and going. Our first step of adopting J. Glenn EdwardsElementary School is well under way. A number of the teachers and staff have expressedappreciation for our offer to be prayer partners with them. Members of our congregation have given$640 toward providing sets of academic attire (school uniforms) for students whose family can’tafford them. That amount will purchase about 42 uniforms. A volunteer team from our church hasalready packed the Backpack Pals food bags one week that help insure that the children from thelowest-income families have something nutritious to eat over the weekends. And in the comingweeks, JHBC volunteers will begin reading with students one-to-one in the Book Buddies program.Thank you to all who are supporting and participating in these important efforts. While at first glancethey may appear to be simply service projects, remember that as we do these things prayerfully andin the name of Christ, our presence embodies the presence of Christ to those we encounter. And thatprepares the way for us to share a verbal witness with those we are dealing with in these efforts. Justas Jesus often addressed physical or mental needs as a means to addressing spiritual needs, so we areministering in His name to open doors to share the gospel with people so they might come to knowChrist. I like how our Sandy Creek Association Director of Missions puts it: “Ministry is what we dowith people inside the church; missions is what we do with people outside the church.”
We will soon be taking the next step in this effort. Preparations are in process now to host anEnglish-as-a-Second-Language class here in our facilities. We will need volunteers to help withchild-care and supervision in this effort, and would like to involve families in it. Imagine how it mightimpact a young child from another country or culture, who is here for his or parents to learn to speakour language, not only to be in the care of kind adults, but to have children to play with as well!Imagine what kind of relationships might be built out of that setting that will pave the way to sharethe gospel in the future! Please be in prayer that God will raise up families to share in this task, andthat God will use our hospitality to open doors for the gospel.
Another attempt to reach out to our surrounding neighborhoods will take place on Saturday,October 23 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. In cooperation with the Humane Society of the U.S.A. and inpartnership with the Shallow Well Church, we will host a free veterinary clinic on the grassy lot at thecorner of Woodland Avenue and Globe Street (the former Mann property). As you know, veterinarycare is very expensive. When the Humane Society contacted us about the possibility of such a clinicfor our church, we responded by inquiring about opening it as an outreach to our community. Theyagreed, and Shallow Well leaders approached us about joining together for this effort. Again, providing this service has the potential to establish relationships in the community that will opendoors to share the gospel. The service is open to members of our church who need to take advantageof it for their pets as well.
In our Sunday morning worship services (both 8:45 and 11:00), we have been focusing on thefuture, thinking biblically and theologically about specific areas of our life and ministry together as achurch, and sharing plans about moving forward in these areas in strategic ways. Please be in prayeras we continue this emphasis in October. As you participate in these services, listen carefully andprayerfully with an open mind and heart. Understand that things we are sharing with you as staff andlay leaders are ways to build on and enhance what we’ve done in the past, expanding our reach notonly to our church family but beyond to our community to bring people to Christ. Remember that thefocus is on our mission to embody Christ’s presence to Sanford and the world through our worship, our witness, and our way of life as His disciples.

FROM THE PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE . . (CONTINUED)
On another note, October marks 19 years that Ronnie Byrd has served JHBC as our music andeducation minister. We are truly blessed to have him as a part of our staff and our church family. Themusic from week to week in our worship services as well as the special services and musicalsdemonstrate Ronnie’s commitment to a music ministry that has integrity. His efforts to stay currentwith what is going on in Christian education gives evidence of his desire to help people know andgrow in Christ. Thanks, Ronnie, for all you do in the ministry and mission of our church! You haveserved well, and we look forward to your continued ministry among us in the coming years.
Finally, our church received a wonderful expression of appreciation from our local National Guardunit a couple of weeks ago. You may remember that we announced a special celebration the unit washaving at O. T. Sloan Park called Freedom Salute. Along with presenting several items to the soldiers(flags, certificates, special coins, etc.), the unit also presented expressions of thanks to individuals andgroups who had offered support during their deployment. Ann Laton, who has served so well for anumber of years as our Outreach Director, received a beautiful certificate of appreciation. The unitalso presented our church with two very special gifts. One is a framed replica of the company flag. The other is the Minuteman statue, a very prestigious award that the Guard gives in recognition orappreciation. I was extremely honored to receive all these on behalf of our congregation. But whattouched me even more was the genuine depth of gratitude that was expressed and the realization thatour efforts to reach out to these soldiers and their families during this deployment had made a deepimpact on them. May God be pleased to use that impact to bring those who don’t already know Him totrust Him, and to help those who already do know Him to grow in their relationship with Him.
Grace and peace.
Your servant for Jesus’ sake,
Mark E. GaskinsSenior Pastor
Hey Churh Family! We have had an exciting end of summer and beginning of the school year!
On Saturday, October 21, we had a big back-to-school bash at Mr. & Mrs. SamWornom’s house. (Thanks to the Wornum’s for hosting us!) We had anawesome time hanging out, swimming, riding in the boat and tube, and havinga cook-out. It was a great way to end the summer!
All our Wednesday night activities have gotten back to normal. The youthgirls meet for Acteens at 6:00 PM every Wednesday. Mrs. Alicia Holly leads us
in a great Bible study and fellowship. We want more girls (7th—12th grade) to come and join us forActeens.
We have Youth at 7:00 PM every Wednesday. The Youth Center opens at 6:30 PM for us to come andhang out and the program starts at 7:00 PM. Every third Wednesday of the moth, we are having specialyouth-led Bible studies (separating boys and girls). We are very excited to start these new studies.
The weekend of September 24 through 26, our youth group went to Myrtle Beach for a youth retreat. We met some missionaries from a ministry called Delta Jewels. You can learn more about this ministryonline. Some of our youth (Callie Batchelor, Mekaila Holly, Haley Kane, Ariane Smith, and BryanPhillips) participated in a sand castle building contest. We won the certificate of “Boldest SandSculpture!”
Thank you for your prayers and support. We appreciate it very much!JHBC YouthAriane Smith, Newsletter Coordinator
hoiPraise the Lord, fall is here and winter is just around the corner.
I just love wintertime, especially when it snows. That pure blanket of white snow that lays so perfectacross the fields and lawns. Also, the icy tree limbs that make everything just glisten. However, I mustconfess I don’t like Mr. Weather, when we have no electricity, etc. With all this comes Halloween: thechildren all decked out in their costumes along with the pumpkin carvings, and all the churches havingtheir harvest celebrations. Then comes thanksgiving: another time of the year to pause and give thanksfor the year’s plentiful blessings. Then finally, Christmas: as the song writer puts it : “It’s the MostWonderful Time of the Year”. Even though it’s my busiest time of the year. it is also the mostheartwarming time for me. We engage in all the festivities from the church musical programs, to eatingwith family and friends, to sharing of gifts, by looking and listening to all the special Christmas movies, musical concerts, reading all the children’s Christmas books, refreshing and renewing myself by readingthe Christmas Story. Let this Advent season be a reminder of how truly blessed we are by the coming ofour Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I am sure that that are many other blessings that I could write about, and I feel sure that some of you, too, have many blessings that you could share. My prayer is that ourcongregation will allow Jesus Christ to come into our hearts. May this season bless us with Christ’s loveand may we truly worship our Lord in spirit and in truth.
During the course of September and the month of October I pray that you have been listening to theseries of sermons and the time of reflection on “Following Jesus into the Future”. This has taken a lot oftime to prepare, write and present such an extraordinary document. These dreams for JHBC wereprayerfully and artistically written, then presented to the fellowship of deacons for approval andguidance. Revisions that were made about what the Lord would have us (the church fellowship) do forHim. Thanks to all whom helped in this endeavor.
Western Carolina University Choir in Concert — Our church will be hosting the Western CarolinaUniversity Choir on Sunday evening, October 24, 2010 at 7:00 PM for a concert as part of their fall choirtour. If you are willing to be a host family, please call the church office with your nameand how many you can accommodate overnight. The only requirement is that they must be housed inpairs. Thanks in advance for your willingness to serve.

Children’s Choir - Thanks to Kaye Cummings, Karen Wood, Kristan Ozee and Laurie Phillips for lead-ing our children’s choirs on Wednesday evenings. The children meet at 6:00 PM. They will soonbegin preparing for their Christmas musical, too. However, we need your child to come and sing withus not only for the Christmas musical, but we need your children to help lead us as we worship. Thechildren will be singing during our 11:00 AM worship service soon. What better way to praise theLord than to have your child singing their little hearts out as they proclaim the gospel throughmusic. The older children’s choir will also be having a special outreach project real soon. A letterexplaining the program will be sent home with each child. It will also be announced in the churchbulleting, as well as, a phone call to each home. We hope your child has a hearty appetite and loves tobe creative.

Deacon's Corner - by John Hall
New Church Year
Our Fellowship of Deacons held their first meeting of the new church year on September 21 andwelcomed three new Deacons: Roy Lowe, James Mitchell, and Mary Upchurch. Mary and Royhave both served before and James was ordained as a Deacon in August. Also serving this year areDallas Harper, Lynwood Jones, Tim Smith, Bob Tilley, Sam Wornom, and myself. Deacon officersfor this church year are as follows:
Chair - John HallVice Chair - Tim Smith
Secretary - Lynwood Jones
The regular monthly meeting for the Deacons has been changed to the first Monday of each monthbeginning at 6:30 P.M.
BUSINESS MEETING SCHEDULETwo years ago, JHBC voted to change our business meeting schedule from the first Sundayevening of each month to meeting four times per year on the first Sunday evening of each quarter.Conducting only four regular business meetings per year has caused some difficulties. Thefrequency of special Sunday morning business meetings has increased because issues arise thatmust be voted on before the regular quarterly meeting. Judging from the number of churchmembers who leave when the visitors are dismissed, special Sunday business meetings followingthe worship service are not very popular. Attendance has also decreased at the quarterlybusiness meetings with one meeting failing to have a quorum present in order to conductbusiness.
In order to improve participation in our regular church business meetings, the Deacons willpresent the following recommendation at the October 3 quarterly business meeting:
The Deacons recommend that Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church conduct anannual business meeting on a Sunday evening in July and five [5] bimonthlymeetings with meeting dates to be determined by the Deacons. The annual businessmeeting will be conducted following a covered dish supper. The purpose of theannual meeting is to conduct regular business and to vote on the following majorbusiness items:
Annual Church BudgetElection of Deacons
Nominating Committee Report
Church business meetings are important to the ministry and fellowship of our church and yourparticipation is vitally needed. An informal time will precede each business meeting to allowmembers to ask questions, make comments, and identify issues and concerns that we need todiscuss.
