“Das Haus – Interiors on Stage” is the simulation of a home at the international interior design fair imm cologne. In the middle of the Pure Village hall, the trade fair a big, open stage for the installation measuring approximately 240 m². Every year, the imm cologne nominates a new designer whose plans are then used for the layout and furnishings. As Guest of Honour, he/she determines what both the architectural elements and the furnishings for the interior and outdoor spaces will look like. The furniture, colours, materials, lighting and accessories chosen by the Guest of Honour add up to an individually configured interior design. But this holistically conceived proposal isn’t just meant to be forward-looking; it should be practical as well – and above all authentic. “Das Haus –Interiors on Stage” is both a designer portrait and a vision-ary blueprint, an example of how it is possible to createa world of one’s own that becomes an expression of one’sown personality. In 2012, London design team Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien were in charge of the new format’s debut. At the imm cologne 2013, the design event continuedunder the direction of Italian product designer Luca Nichetto. This time round, Koelnmesse has invited Danishdesigner Louise Campbell to create "Das Haus" for the imm cologne 2014.

This collection of materials – press releases, a designer portrait and interviews – is intended to provide as much scope for variation as possible for your work. I would par-ticularly like to draw your attention to the interview ma-terial we have compiled with Louise Campbell, as it is of course impossible for her to respond to every interview request to an equal extent.

I hope you enjoy letting yourself be inspired by Louise Campbell.

We are delighted to present the third interpretation of our design format to you today: Louise Campbell's plans for "Das Haus – Interiors on Stage" 2014. This press kit is in-tended to give you an initial impression of what awaits you and visitors to the imm cologne in January 2014 – when, of course, you will able to admire the full-scale, walk-in original 1:1.

But one thing is already certain: it will be an extraordinary"Das Haus"; a scenography of a rather "different" kind that combines the practical focus of the format with the imagination of one of the most unusual designers of her generation. It will be fascinating to see how Louise Camp-bell manages to link such wide-ranging associations as the world of Alice in Wonderland, The Cure's Wild Mood Swings album, Sherril Jaffe's Scars make your body more interesting stories and Jane Austen's literary classicSense and Sensibility. Suffice it to say that she will be playing with scale and expectations and presenting an alternative to the perfectly styled 3-room apartment with kitchen, hall and bathroom.

And there's something else we can tell you now: this third edition of "Das Haus – Interiors on Stage" will once and for all establish the format as one of the most exciting plat-forms for groundbreaking ideas and concepts the design scene has to offer. All three of the designers and design teams who have "performed" as Guests of Honour in this format so far have presented fascinating and visionary solutions that are nevertheless down-to-earth – in the sensethat they are understandable for interior designers and consumers too. At the same time, their visionary interiors have been just as authentic as we'd hoped – and far more different than we could ever have imagined.

By the way: we're delighted to report that "Das Haus", to-gether with Pure Village, is moving into a new, extremely spacious home in Hall 2.2 as part of the imm cologne's expansion of its Pure design trail. In fact, the new loca-tion is so big and airy that – at the designer's request – we might even be able to hint at a second level this time round.

The trade fair architecture of the Pure Village format that was launched four years ago was developed for the imm cologne by external consultant and Creative Director Dick Spierenburg. In the course of the trade fair management's ongoing expansion of the Pure seg-ment, he was also responsible for devising a further component that celebrated its highly successful pre-miere in 2013: Pure Editions, a gallery-like stage for curators of visionary furniture concepts. In 2014, the Pure segment will be featuring another new format by the name of Pure Elegance; judging by the posi-tive response from exhibitors, it already looks set to be a hit. And thanks to the successful start it got off to with Doshi Levien (2012) and Luca Nichetto (2013), the design event "Das Haus – Interiors on Stage" that was initiated under Dick Spierenburg's creative super-vision will be opening its doors in Pure Village again next year too. This time it will be based on a blueprint by Danish designer Louise Campbell.

The "Das Haus" event is entering its third season. How important is this project for the imm cologne? The imm cologne stages numerous events for visi-tors. When we presented the "Das Haus" format for the first time in 2012 with designer couple Doshi Levien, we weren'tnecessarily planning a series of houses: we wanted to wait and see what the response would be like. Well, it turned out to be very positive, and even after the stunning next in-stalment by Luca Nichetto, the initial designs from LouiseCampbell still managed to surprise us: it's astonish-ing to see just how wide the scope of a format like this can be. And it's precisely this individual interpretation by the respective designer that makes it so appealing to visitors. On 240 square metres of space, "Das Haus" pre-sents innovative ideas for interiors in the here and now. This time you decided to commission a female designer. Why? Well, to start with the last house was designed by a man. Obviously we keep a close eye on the design scene, and it's still true to say that the design world – for what-ever reason – is dominated by male designers. The ques-tion itself is proof of that. But it's often women who de-

cide what furnishings to buy for the home. So you could ask yourself whether women designers aren't actually much closer to the female target audience that plays such an important role for the industry. Nevertheless, we did consider other designers and design teams for the project too, but with Louise Campbell we've managed to find somebody with a strong personality who's not just rooted in the world of Scandinavian interiors – a highly productive field right now – but who is very influential in that area as well. Personally, I'm delighted to have our first female solo designer for "Das Haus", but it wasn't the decisive factor.

What do you particularly like about working with Louise Campbell? Louise has given the development of her house at the imm cologne 2014 intense consideration. She builds her models herself, brings a lot of her delightful personali-ty to bear and is concentrating wholeheartedly on this project. She also surprised us by coming up with severalcompletely different designs and is bringing some totally new aspects of home living to the public dialogue. When-ever we get together and she shows us the latest model, it's like an updated snapshot of the "Haus", which seems to be growing as time goes on. But more than any-thing else, Louise Campbell is a virtuoso when it comes to light, whereas many furniture designers often under-estimate just how complex that particular area of interior design is. And Louise Campbell is also a queen of col-ours, patterns and decoration. But there's one thing you can't expect from her: a conventional approach. We'll be experiencing a very sensuous "Haus" at the imm cologne 2014, a house that allows people to take a step back from everyday life. So there are plenty of good reasons to look forward to "Das Haus".

Why do visitors and creatives find "Das Haus" so appealing? It shows a complete picture, an original example of avant-garde, creative living – a picture that has been refracted through the lens of the designer's personality and individual tastes. Rather than being homogeneously "styled" to ensure its conformity with a given brand, it showcases an exclusive selection of what the market has

to offer. It's as authentic as any trade fair scenography that strives for good design can be. It's like being allowed to look into a stranger's home, except that this is the home of a creative who deals with issues relating to how we live professionally and is allowed to "play a little," as Louise puts it. At the end of the day, "Das Haus" is also an experi-ment, a look at the possibilities interiors offer us and how we will be living in future. Louise Campbell's "Haus" really will have a very playful side to it, whereas Luca Nichetto's scenography was more application-oriented. Whatever its focus – which will sometimes be more realistic than others –the "Haus" is definitely a source of inspiration, not just for consumers but for professionals as well.

Will there be any changes at the next imm cologne in 2014? Yes: although "Das Haus" will be erected in the middleof Pure Village again, it will be in Hall 2.2 this time round –and thus on a level of the exhibition centre that has a higherceiling. We want to make the most of that, and the way things stand at the moment we'll be presenting our first house with two levels.

What does participating in "Das Haus" mean for a designer? It's hard to think of any other event format in the field of interior design that attracts so much public attention as "Das Haus". And it really is a fantastic job: you're given around 200 square metres and a decent budget and get to build and furnish a house according to your own ide-as. What's more, you get to do it all before the eyes of an international audience of professionals. That's not just at-tractive to visitors, it catches the attention of companies looking to commission designers too. So far all the de-signers who've taken part have been able to make some interesting contacts on the very first day of the fair.

Isn't it a shame that "Das Haus" has to be disman-tled once the imm cologne is over? Of course, but then again we're used to the fact that a trade fair is a transient thing. But we do try to reuse a lot of the materials. The products displayed in the "Haus" go back to the manufacturers, and the many plants that Luca Nichetto used in his design went back to a nursery. We're even thinking about exporting "Das Haus" as an ambassador for the imm cologne. We've had enquiries from international design events about re-erecting "Das Haus" in other places. We want to bear that in mind more when it comes to constructing the current house by LouiseCampbell. Who knows: maybe there'll be a Cologne "designhouse" travelling the world as an ambassador before too long.

too, but I always start with my hands. Always." What ap-peals to her about the "Das Haus" project is the prospect of telling one of many potential stories about the per-fect interior and being able to translate it into reality on a 1:1 basis. "Can I play?" was the first question she asked her client Koelnmesse. A little like Alice in Wonderland, visitors to "Das Haus" 2014 can thus look forward to a fascinating play with dimensions in a vision of the ideal home that Louise Campbell has entitled "0-100. (Made to measure.)”.

Born in Copenhagen in 1970 as the daughter of a Danishfather and an English mother and influenced by two different cultures, Louise Campbell is today one of the leading protagonists in a new avant-garde generationof designers. As they evolve the grand tradition of Scan-dinavian Modernism not only with respect but with new-found self-confidence as well, these creatives are marrying traditional Nordic craftsmanship with new technologies and materials. Between the poles of tradi-tional minimalism and a far more playful approach that exhibits great courage in its willingness to experiment with forms and materials, Louise Campbell creates fur-niture and luminaires that owe their appeal just as much to the clarity of their forms as to the emotionality of their aesthetics. As a result, her works are anything but austere;instead, for all the stringency of their forms, their warmth and the playful, sometimes even humorous way she re-interprets everyday objects exudes an irresistible fasci-nation.

But there is another side to her as well, a side that aims to counter the Danish passion for perfection with a sense of the beauty inherent in decay and imperfection – which, she believes, is the very quality that gives a cityscape or home much of its warmth and personality. Louise Camp-bell's close ties with Anglo-Saxon culture undoubtedly played a part in shaping this aesthetic sensibility. At the age of 15, she and her family moved to England. After graduating from the London College of Furniture in 1992, she continued her studies at the Danish Design School, where she qualified as an industrial designer in 1995. She set up her own business the following year and was

As a Danish designer, Louise Campbell sees herself as part of a culture in which the combination of beautifulthings and good quality is nothing short of a tradition. The filigree aesthetics that are the hallmark of her work are best shown to advantage when translated into perfectly crafted products by highly specialised name-brand companies. This is particularly true of her lamps, which use sophisticated constructions and choice materials to create remarkably natural lighting effects. She made a name for herself with exquisite products for exclusive brands such as Louis Poulsen, Royal Copenhagen and Zanotta. Unusual interior designssuch as the front office of the Danish Ministry of Culture, which is reminiscent of luxurious changing cubicles, are just as much part of her work as purely conceptual scenographies like "Blah, blah, blah", a meeting room she created at the Kunstforeningen Gammel Strand Museum as a one-off installation in 2008.

Louise Campbell doesn't necessarily belong to the loud and busy world of "popstar" designers. She selects a small number of projects and dedicates herself to them 100 percent. With almost artistic ambition, the Danish designer seeks the poetic quality in everything that sur-rounds people in their day-to-day lives. At the same time, she loves to have a hand in every single detail – in a very literal sense: "I've always tried to find out what makes an object or atmosphere attractive to people. I believe it's something very elemental, something that appeals to our senses: Is it soft? Does it smell good? Do I want to put my bare feet on this floor? Besides being interesting to look at, is this mug pleasant to touch as well, is it something that I'm happy to feel up close and that I want to share intimacy with? When all's said and done, the home is after all a very intimate place."

"The best way to approach these things is with your hands," she says, explaining how she sets about her work. And that is exactly how Louise Campbell approached her latest project too, creating a whole series of models for the interior scenography of "Das Haus – Interiors on Stage" at the international furnishing fair imm cologne 2014. "Obviously I work with computers and machines

soon celebrating her first triumphs, especially in the field of lighting design.

Besides her lighting and furniture designs, Louise Camp-bell is also increasingly active in the fields of product and interior design. Her long list of clients includes Louis Poulsen, Zanotta, HAY, Royal Copenhagen, Holmegaard, Stelton, Muuto, Interstop and the Danish Ministry of Cul-ture. At her studio, she works with a team of up to five staff, but she loves to work on her own now and again as well. After several productive years, she can afford the luxury of choosing projects that she can handle alone: "I don't want to be a big business. I prefer to be independent and choose which projects I do. I don't want to be an industry! That's not what makes me happy."

In addition to the diverse prizes she has won for her prod-ucts and personal accolades such as Denmark's Thor-vald Bindesbøll Medal (2007) and Sweden's Prince Eugen Medal (2009), the prominent role she plays in the Scan-dinavian design scene is also evident from various guest lectureships, her commitment to Denmark's leading designinstitutions and her involvement with non-commercial ini-tiatives such as "Walk the Plank".

• Louise Campbell designs "Das Haus – Interiors on Stage" at the imm cologne 2014 as a low-tech house in which open space and furniture are put to flexible use

• The Danish designer will be stagingher individual interior vision as a play with measurements and scale entitled "0-100. (Made to measure.)"

Das Haus –Interiors on Stage 2014Playing with dimensions

It is meant to be a house that radiates calm amidst the hustle and bustle of the trade fair; a house that extends a solicitous welcome to visitors and entices them into the world of Louise Campbell with subdued lighting, a warm atmosphere and an extremely large bed space. But also a house that turns the home as we know it on its head and alters the familiar dimensions of space and furniture. Very gently and seductively, the Danish designer's rebellion against rigid interior habits and design norms is taking on concrete shape in Cologne.

Louise Campbell is continuing the "Das Haus – Interiors onStage" series in unusual fashion: her design for the 240 m² house that will be erected at the international furnishing fair imm cologne in January 2014 shows an open space without walls; whilst three of its sides are largely closed by a textile covering, the fourth is totally open. Inside, a post-and-beam grid structures the space. A second, non-accessible, gallery-like level hints at areas of retreat.

Open space with symbolically designed furnishings"I didn't approach the assignment as a purely architec-tural project; on the contrary, I've actually tried to empha-sise that it's a piece of design," says Louise Campbell. "I built'Das Haus' from the inside out. The house itself can be seen as a big piece of furniture. It's one big storage unit for people. Or you could say it's a shelf for life."

The interior design is correspondingly unusual and has nothing in common with mere styling. "You can't imitate a house 100 percent in a place like this, with no air and no light. So my 'Haus' is a lot more abstract."

"0-100. (Made to measure.)"For although the great attraction the project holds for a designer is undoubtedly the possibility of implementing an ideal living situation on a 1:1 scale, Louise Campbell –influenced by the unusual location – has very deliberatelydecided to play with dimensions and challenge visitors with surprising details. She picks up on size norms in archi-tecture and design and the search for the right balance between hectic activity and total relaxation and turns them into the central theme of her design. The tools and grids present throughout the house also serve to emphasise the major role measuring and weighing things up play in our modern lifestyle – and help explain why Louise Camp-bell has given her vision of the ideal way to live the fitting title "0-100. (Made to measure.)".

But besides representing complex layers of meaning in relation to taking measurements and scale, "Das Haus" 2014is also an authentic reflection of the designer's personality: here, Scandinavian rationality collides with Louise Camp-bell's passion for the aesthetics of decay. The designer –who grew up in two cultures and has been shaped by both Danish and English influences – also wants her scenographyto embody her penchant for mistakes and accidents. As a result, "Das Haus" is also a statement that takes a stance against the perfectionism and static furniture concepts that are so often intrinsic to interior design.

The designer is thus deliberately focussing on just a few crucial functions – such as the light that is so essential to the atmosphere – and depicting them in symbols.

There are huge cabinets, lamps, tables and mattresses –permanent built-in fixtures that represent basic functions for the users: something soft that enables them to lie down and relax instantly, work surfaces meant for productive activity. "These functions are going to be given high priorityin my 'Haus'. Because some things are fixed – including a very long work surface in the kitchen and a surprising amount of bed space – the interior also permits a great deal of flexibility," says Louise Campbell in explanation of her design concept.

Louise Campbell's design demonstrates the broad scopeof the "Das Haus" formatThe third "Das Haus" scenography thus differs considerablyfrom its predecessors, which created a more or less ready-to-use, cosily furnished house organised into a sequence of spaces. Louise Campbell, however, turns "Das Haus" into a stage for her own, very personal interior manifesto, a place that tells a lot of stories without the need for words. The most important advance cue she wants to give visitors is an allusion to the stories of Alice in Wonderland. And so, like Alice, visitors to "Das Haus" 2014 can look forward to a fascinating play with dimensions.

as well – and above all authentic. “Das Haus – Interiors on Stage” is both a designer portrait and a visionary blue-print, an example of how it is possible to create a world of one’s own that becomes an expression of one’s own personality. Besides picking up on current interior design trends, the project also addresses the public’s aspirations and social change.

In 2012, Anglo-Indian designer team Nipa Doshi and Jon-athan Levien were in charge of the new format's debut, staging what was effectively an organically evolved space that permits communicative interaction between occu-pants and cultures. In 2013, Italian product designer Luca Nichetto created the next instalment of the design event as an elegant ensemble open to nature on all sides. "Das Haus" is located within Pure Village; in 2014, the trade fair format will be moving into a spacious new home in Hall 2.2.

The next trade fair duoimm cologne // LivingInteriors will be held from13th to 19th January 2014

A low-tech house as a survival strategyWhat makes her house visionary is a seemingly anach-ronistic attitude towards media and domestic technology. "This is a low-tech house. It's in opposition to too much electronic media coming into the house, it’s in opposition to too much noise. I want this to be a quiet place. I love my smartphone and take it to bed with me, but that's enough," reveals the mother of an adolescent son. Rather than beingrooted in a certain philosophy, Zen or sentimentality, this conviction stems from the fact that she believes people are swamped by a flood of impressions and require-ments as soon as they step outside the door. "My ideal home is completely rid of all this rubbish. There's nothing old-fashioned about that; it's just a survival strategy."

"Das Haus" – half designer portrait, half visionary blueprint“Das Haus – Interiors on Stage” is the simulation of a home at the international interior design fair imm cologne. In the middle of the Pure Village hall, the trade fair will be erectinga big, open stage for the installation measuring around 240 m². Every year, the imm cologne nominates a new designer whose plans are then used for the layout and furnishings. As Guest of Honour, he/she determines what both the architectural elements and the furnishings for the interior and outdoor spaces will look like. The furniture, colours, materials, lighting and accessories chosen by the Guest of Honour add up to an individually configured in-terior design. But this holistically conceived proposal isn’t just meant to be forward-looking; it should be practical

behind the pragmatism of the house and its designer, who is mainly known for her lighting designs, there is a wealth of surprises, poetry and humour waiting to be discovered.

Louise Campbell is one of the leading protagonists in a new avant-garde generation of designers who are evolvingthe grand tradition of Scandinavian Modernism not only with respect but with new-found self-confidence as well. Born in Copenhagen in 1970 and influenced by the two cultures of her Anglo-Danish parents, the designer studiedboth at the London College of Furniture and the Danish Design School. Her clients include Louis Poulsen, Zanotta, HAY, Royal Copenhagen, Holmegaard, Stelton, Muuto, In-terstop and the Danish Ministry of Culture.

"Das Haus" – half designer portrait, half visionary blueprint"Das Haus – Interiors on Stage" is the simulation of a home at the international interior design fair imm cologne. In the middle of the Pure Village hall, the trade fair will be erectinga big, open stage for the installation measuring around 240 m². Every year, the imm cologne nominates a new designer whose plans are then used for the layout and furnishings. Besides picking up on current interior design trends, the project also addresses the public’s aspirations and social change.

In 2012, Anglo-Indian designer team Nipa Doshi and Jona-than Levien were in charge of the new format's debut, staging what was effectively an organically evolved space that permits communicative interaction between occu-pants and cultures. In 2013, Italian product designer Luca Nichetto created the next instalment of the design event as an elegant ensemble open to nature on all sides. "Das Haus" is located within Pure Village; in 2014, the trade fair format will be moving into a spacious new home in Hall 2.2.

"Das Haus – Interiors on Stage" is the large-scale sceno-graphy of a living situation based on the very personalideas of an internationally influential designer who changesevery year. Following London design team Doshi Levien’ssuccessful launch of the imm cologne’s new design event (2012) and the subsequent edition by Luca Nichetto(2013), Koelnmesse has nominated Danish designerLouise Campbell to create "Das Haus – Interiors on Stage 2014".

At the international interior design fair imm cologne in January 2014, she will be building a low-tech house as an open space for flexible use in which the furniture merely serves to symbolise basic functions. For the Dane, flexibi-lity, comfort and scope for creativity are the most impor-tant requirements an ideal home should satisfy.

A "Haus" like something from "Alice in Wonderland"Louise Campbell wants to use "Das Haus" to tell stories. One of them pursues the theme of Alice in Wonderland, whose adventures take her to both miniature and giant-sized worlds. The dimensions in "Das Haus" seem to have been shifted slightly too, and ultra-long tables and beds produce some disconcerting effects. Visitors to "Das Haus" 2014 can thus look forward to a fascinating play with scale.

Louise Campbell has called her scenography and its play with scale and measurements "0-100. (Made to measure.)". Amongst other things, the many layers of meaning in this title allude to the search for the right balance between hectic activity and total relaxation. The tools and grids present throughout the house also serve to emphasise the major role measuring and weighing things up play in our modern lifestyle.

The basic form of the house speaks the simple, unclutter-ed language of Scandinavian design and echoes its prefer-ence for natural materials. Louise Campbell takes an open space structured by a post-and-beam grid and bathes it in warm, welcoming light. At the same time, she sees her "Haus" as a piece of design rather than architecture: "The house itself can be seen as a big piece of furniture. It's one big storage unit for people. Or you could say it's a shelf for life," says Louise Campbell pragmatically. And yet

Workshop interview with Louise Campbell:Spaces for experimenting

On life and living in DenmarkLouise Campbell: Because of the light and weather, Denmark is a country of extreme contrasts. In summer, when it never really gets dark at night, we forget we have a winter. We're open and friendly and spend the whole day outdoors: in the garden, in the country, in the streets. And then winter comes. Many people don't realise how far north Copenhagen really is: it gets dark at three in the after-noon. Then everybody moves back inside and we seem reserved and unapproachable, like completely different people. Our homes reflect that too. In winter, we turn them into cave-like places and use a lot of energy to create atmo-spheric lighting: we need it to make up for the lack of day-light. And we use a lot of natural materials as well. We al-ways have done and we still do, even though globalization is making its mark on us too, of course.

On Danish design cultureLouise Campbell: We have a completely conservative senseof quality and we're very sentimental about design. Danes are brought up to pay attention to quality and design. Two generations ago there was a very strong design move-ment here with a very democratic attitude, led by designerslike Arne Jacobsen. You could say we were force-fed with design. And that's obviously reflected in our homes. Even what young people buy is still very closely connected to what their grandparents bought. The Danes either buy new design (sometimes we pay a lot of money for it, sometimes we don't), buy it second-hand or inherit it. Nothing is lost. Longevity is also a form of sustainability.

On the aesthetics of decayLouise Campbell: I have a huge dilemma: Danes don’t like decay. Everything is perfectly renovated. But I have a very strong affection for the beauty of decay, for the kind of thing you could still find in Copenhagen back in the 1970s: back-yards full of atmosphere, dust and broken glass. For me, this almost frightening, rigid perfection is the shadow side of Denmark. But thanks to external influences, that's grad-ually changing – which is good, because an environment can become so perfect that it gets clinical and impersonal.

Louise Campbell is known for her beautiful lamps and accessories, filigree armchairs and decorative interiors. With her scenography for "Das Haus – Interiors on Stage"at the imm cologne 2014, she will be using an abundance of creative ideas to show the design world another side of herself. "Das Haus" will surprise visitors with shiftingscales, a lighting concept devised for big spaces and a conceptual approach that focuses on measurements and measuring instruments. But the Danish designer's "Haus" isn't just "made to measure"; it's about finding the right balance as well.

With her scenography for "Das Haus", Louise Campbell wants to tell several stories all at once – without the need for words. "I want the atmosphere alone to ensure people have a strong experience. But I'd like them to have a few codewords before they step inside." In this interview, she describes those codewords – "Alice", "Sense and Sensi-bility", "Scars" and "Wild Mood Swings" – with the same authenticity and unreserved openness she exhibits when talking about life and living in her native Denmark, variousaspects of feminine design, her sleeping habits and her survival strategy. As a conversation partner, she thus dis-plays the very same qualities she demands of her own work. She wants to create an honest "Haus" built of natural materials and simple forms – and with spatial structures that are just as open as the welcome it gives its visitors.

On the levels of meaning in "0-100. (Made to measure.)"Louise Campbell: "Das Haus" is about changing pace as well as scale. The title "0-100. (Made to measure.)" refers to the meticulousness with which we designers work, al-ways seeking to perfect even on millimetre-scale. It refersto my version of “Das Haus” being made to fit the slightly unusual dimensions of the given space exactly. It refers to measuring instruments. If you look closely you'll find measuring instruments in most rooms of a home – in kitchens, bathrooms, workspaces. But it also very much refers to measuring priorities – to weighing things up in order to find a balance in life in spite of daily shifts be-tween high levels of activity and absolute calm. Finally, "Das Haus" is a platform of precision and certainty, be-cause if you have a reliable base it gives you the freedom to do just about anything.

changing my mind and keep wanting to try something new. But most houses are surprisingly static: chairs and tables always have to be in the same place and it’s dif-ficult to move them around. And 99 percent of design proposals for a home are pretty fixed in terms of where the product is meant to be positioned and how it's sup-posed to be used. In "Das Haus", I want to try and break all these fixed ideas up a bit. It shows that spaces and furniture can serve as a basis rather than performing fixed functions.

A critical codeword about perfection: "Scars make your body more interesting" (Sherril Jaffe)Louise Campbell: This stands for my passion for decay, mistakes, accidents – for my scepticism towards perfec-tion. Because if everything is too perfect, I don’t feel com-fortable, I don’t feel at home. That's why there will be places with flaws and imperfections in "Das Haus" – so thatnobody is afraid to enter it and it becomes more per-sonal.

What does the romantic literary classic Sense and Sensibility (Jane Austen) have to do with "Das Haus"?Louise Campbell: It's meant to express the opposites in my work and in my design for "Das Haus". Because there is of course a strong level of logic in everything – some-thing of the northern, Scandinavian rationale, if you like. Although I'm very logical on the one hand, I'm all the op-posite things too. These two sides clash in my work – and they clash in "Das Haus" as well.

On feminine designLouise Campbell: Feminine design is not the Ferrari,it's the Morris Minor. It's less aggressive, it mothers you somehow, it looks after its users. But I think design in general has become more feminine in recent years. You're freer to express yourself in a more personal way and there are no taboos in that respect any more. Even minimalism can be feminine – it's all about attention to detail rather than the conceptual side of design. It's about being heartfelt and honest in what you do. It's about be-ing genuine.

On Berlin, England and the art of allowing decayLouise Campbell: I love Berlin. You can still find that at-mosphere of decay there, even though it's probably go-ing to change very quickly. But if you go to England, they know how to appreciate decay, they know how to bring out its beauty.

I've never succeeded in becoming the perfect Dane. May-be because of my personality, maybe because of my genes, who knows? In Denmark, you have to show a cer-tain degree of submissiveness if you want to fit in. Berlin is the exact opposite: whoever you are, you walk in and you have a space. So "Das Haus" might be Danish in the sense that it's simple, clear and honest: what you see is what you get, especially in terms of the materials. But I'm trying to get away from the stringency you find in Den-mark, which can be considered a sort of hierarchy. I want my "Das Haus" to make everybody feel welcome.

Associations with "Alice in Wonderland" (Lewis Carroll)Louise Campbell: The Alice codeword is my way of saying "Why not? Let's play a bit!" Go have a look in the drawers, look at the details. Think twice – because there might be a few surprises around. Alice allows me to play with scale. I think it's exciting to change perspective, switch-ing from being an ant to being a giant. It frees you from thinking in rigid patterns when it comes to things like the double bed. All of a sudden, it's possible to do things like have a twenty-metre long bed.

Why she thought of The Cure's album "Wild Mood Swings" Louise Campbell: I want a house where I can give into my moods – a place where it's great to be alone and where it's great to have 40 guests if you feel like it. A house that feels totally different during the day than it does at night.

On her desire for permanent change, flexible houses and less static designLouise Campbell: I can’t live in a static environment. I've lived in more than 30 houses in my life because I keep

The feminine side of "Das Haus"Louise Campbell: It’s a mother house that says "Please come in and make yourself comfortable". I like to think of my "Das Haus" as a big hug. It's also hysterical in some places, or even a bit insecure and wobbly, like walking on high heels. It will have fragile bits that seem to be saying "Please don’t touch, I've just spent two hours doing my hair." I imagine it all being accompanied by the smell of coffee and bacon and freshly baked cook-ies. I want people to feel so safe and comfortable in my "Haus" that they could just lay down and fall asleep.

Inspiration for visitorsLouise Campbell: What I like best about my "Haus" is the fact that there's so much bed space. Wherever I live, I keep moving bed: I’ll sleep here, I’ll sleep there, I’ll sleep everywhere, even in the studio. I love waking up to a new surprise in the morning. "Das Haus" is an invitation to sleep wherever you like. Even though a lot of things are built-in and fixed, it's precisely these radical decisions that are intended to encourage flexibility and prompt people to mix things up. Let's open up the territory! There is not a bedroom, there is not a kitchen, there isn't even an official bathroom, but there are lots of flexible spaces to experiment with so that you can broaden your horizons.

reflected in an exhibition within Pure Elegance, created by a renowned interior designer and entitled "The Suite".

Hall 11 is and will remain the traditional heart of Pure. In future too, it will serve as the starting point and backbone of the Cologne design itinerary. It is followed by Pure Editionsin Hall 3.2, the format for visionary furniture and interior design concepts that got off to a very successful start this year. Continuing along the design axis, visitors will come to Hall 2.2, the new home of Pure Elegance and Pure Village. Both formats will benefit from the generous size of the hall and its high air space - something Pure Village ex-hibitors were accustomed to from the first three years. An expressively designed transition, the facades of which are printed with motifs from classic Italian architecture that deliberately emphasise the contrast, serves as a caesura between these two design themes and their very different content.

At the opposite end of the design itinerary, in Hall 1 on the west side of the exhibition centre, a spacious area is devoted to young designers and their D3 Design Talents platform. Besides providing sufficient space for the pres-entations of the selected D3 Contest participants again, it also offers additional scope for other installations and formats dedicated to portraying the newcomer generation.

PureThe Pure design trail

Cologne, September 2013. Following the good perfor-mance of the imm cologne 2013, the international fur-niture and interior design fair is creating space for its continued qualitative and quantitative development. The Pure segment plays a key role in this. With Pure Ele-gance, the new format for the luxurious high-end sector, and the stronger focus on young creative design in Hall One, the trade fair is consistently continuing on its way towards an interiors show. "As a segment for the pres-entation of international high-end design, Pure has un-dergone the most dynamic development in recent years -partly due to new exhibitor interest and exhibitors who are returning to the Rhine, and partly due to new incen-tives from the trade fair in the form of new formats and themes," says Frank Haubold, Vice President Trade Fair Management.

With Pure Elegance, the imm cologne 2014 is creating an offering in the luxurious high-end segment. With its broad-based structures, the new format is designed to create generous spaces for brand worlds whose exclusiveproduct ranges will be staged in lavish booth designs that allow them to unfold their decorative and sometimes flam-boyant character. With big, themed entrances that temptvisitors to step inside, premium fittings and classic architec-ture, Pure Elegance provides a prestigious ambience for the presentation of this exclusive kind of interior design.

With this concept, the imm cologne aims to develop the potential of this product category whilst simultaneously heightening visitors' perception of details: "Nowadays, as a design theme, luxury isn't just apparent at the level of style, which is usually characterised by eclectic aesthetics. Pure Elegance will demonstrate that an exclusive lifestyle is also and above all expressed in the exceptional quality of processing techniques, finely crafted details, beautiful lac-quers and woods, exquisite fabrics and premium leather," says Creative Director Dick Spierenburg in anticipation of the event. Pure

Pure is a format for design quality. This segment of the international furnishing fair imm cologne brings to-gether high-quality products from all categories, createdby designers for internationally operating brand-name companies, curators of smaller editions or specialised design labels.

Pure is not so much an aesthetic style as an attitude. In this respect, the term "pure" does not stand for a pu-ristic style so much as for an uncompromising designorientation based on creative principles. Over the years, the Pure segment has evolved into a neighbourhood of brands and curators who, more so than others, take their orientation from social and aesthetic develop-ments in the way we live – and who play a more ac-centuated role in those developments. What they have in common is their continuing search for innovative design solutions to functional and formal design as-signments in the furnishing sector. United by the indi-vidual character of their design, a wide spectrum of very different brands come together here – and it is this diversity that determines the face of Pure.

This consistent attitude to design and diverse range of companies is reflected in the various Pure formats, which differ in terms of their architecture and space allocation, their supporting programmes, their assort-ment concepts and their target groups. Formats for large-scale presentations and newcomer débuts, for hip scenographies and artistic solo acts, for creative understatement or the quest for living contrasts – "Pure"is as varied and multifaceted as the design sector itself.

Pure Editions | Hall 3.2

Launched in 2013, Pure Editions is the imm cologne's new format for curators of visionary furniture and interiordesign concepts in Hall 3.2. The space is lined with dark surfaces like a stage and subdivided into booths measuring 50-150 m² by an open trade fair architec-ture that can be individually designed by the exhibitors –a showcase for design installations that point the way ahead. Featured Editions – ten selected installations created for the exhibitors by designers or architects – are a special highlight of Pure Editions and underline the gallery-like character of this hall.

Pure 11 | Hall 11.1, 11.2, 11.3

The arena that provides unfettered freedom for the regular cast of the imm cologne's design segment. With space spread over three levels and its community of like-minded companies, Hall 11 provides the classic setting for large-scale brand presentations and clus-ters together innovations, unusual product displays and lifestyle.

Please note: next event in 2015

Pure Textile| Hall 3.2 (imm cologne 2015)

Pure Textile is a special format within the Pure seg-ment where, every two years, top European curators of premium home textiles present their collections and new products in a distinctive and highly emotional am-biance.

Pure Village | Hall 2.2

Pure Village, launched in 2010, is a democratic design platform for established and up-and-coming brands and designers featuring an innovative mix of product ranges that cover the entire spectrum of interior design. The consistent architecture of Pure Village was inspired by urban structures and, together with design events and supporting programmes like "Das Haus" and "The Stage",gives rise to an exceptionally lively "neighbourhood".

Pure Elegance | Hall 2.2

The imm cologne's new Pure format provides the la-vishly dimensioned setting for stylish collections from the luxurious high-end segment. Staged in self-con-tained brand worlds, the interior designs showcased here represent an exclusive lifestyle that is expressed in the form of unusual, often eclectic aesthetics, sophis-tication and exceptionally high-quality materials and workmanship.

With its broad-based structures, the new format is designed to create generous spaces for brand worlds whose exclusive product ranges will be staged in lavish booth designs that allow them to unfold their decorative, modern and luxurious character in an ambience of timeless elegance. On the other hand, Pure Village – which is also located in Hall 2.2 – will again be providing the setting for unconventional brand and product scenographies. Here, premium providers from all areas relating to interior design who aspire to first-rate design quality will be showing a comprehensive mix of product ranges.

Since 2012, Pure Village has also been home to "Das Haus – Interiors on Stage". The spectacular design pro-ject is a walk-in simulation of a house – half visionary blueprint, half designer portrait. Based on the plans of the new designer who is nominated every year, "Das Haus" shows a structure consisting of architectural ele-ments, interior spaces and outdoor areas, as well as ar-rangements of furniture and furnishing elements for an individually configured interior design. This time round, the project is being implemented in collaboration with Louise Campbell. The Danish furniture and lighting designer with an English instinct for interior design is undoubtedly one of the leading protagonists in a new avant-garde generation of designers who are evolving the grand tradition of Scandinavian Modernism not only with respect but with new-found self-confidence as well.

In Hall 1 on the west side of the exhibition centre, anothernew segment by the name of Pure One will be dedi-cated entirely to the theme of young design. Cologne, September 2013. The imm cologne – the very first interior design show of the year – opens its doors on 13th January 2014. Thanks to the participation of major innovation drivers, market leaders and brands, it is not only the first choice for renowned international exhibi-tors but also for a broad spectrum of visitors, attracting well-informed decision-makers from all over the world. By showcasing inspiring interior design ideas for trend-setters, it provides markets with new impetus. The imm cologne is the meeting place for the entire interiors in-dustry and, in even-numbered years, is complemented by the trade show format LivingInteriors, which stands for holistic interior and furnishing concepts. At the imm cologne 2014 and the LivingInteriors fair that is held parallel to it, a total of more than 1,100 companies from 50 countries will be showing what they have to offer.

The imm cologne is continuously branching out in new directions with its numerous formats. With the aim of tar-geting visitors in the design sector, the trade show has developed new and specialised platforms such as Pure, Pure Village and Pure Editions, as well as the brand new Pure Elegance and PureOne-Design Injection formats that will be premiering next year. But in addition to that, the event is also modifying, expanding and strengthening other hall areas such as the Sleep segment or Hall 10. In fact, Hall 10 is a very good example of how important it is for even the most successful hall to be refined and adapted to changing interests on a regular basis. The new creative concept will enhance Hall 10 even further in order to ap-peal to new international target audiences.

Next year the area that focuses on design will include Halls 1, 2.2, 3.2 and 11. Hall 11 is and will remain the tra-ditional heart of Pure. In future too, it will serve as the starting point and backbone of the Cologne design trail. It is followed by Pure Editions in Hall 3.2, the format for visionary furniture and interior design concepts that got off to a very successful start this year. Continuing along

of the selected D3 Contest participants again, it also of-fers additional scope for other installations and formats dedicated to portraying the newcomer generation. Here visitors can experience idea labs that have a concrete in-fluence on the furniture industry.

The Smart segment in Halls 7 and 8 is already booked out: approx. 100 companies have registered to show their innovative interior concepts under the "Young Lifestyles" label here. Smart combines the practicality and versatil-ity expected of furniture for young lifestyles with up-to-the-minute design in the living room, self-assembly and bedroom categories. The Sleep segment in Hall 9, where our exhibitors showcase their wide-ranging spectrum of sleep-related furnishings, has grown continuously in recent years. Because our exhibitors' space requirement this year again far exceeds the capacity of Hall 9 where this segment has traditionally been accommodated, this segment is being expanded by assigning Hall 5.2 to it as well. This has enabled the imm cologne to attract two major players back to the trade fair: Tempur and Recticel, both of whom will be presenting their products in Hall 5.2.

In the Comfort segment in Halls 6 and 10.2, the imm cologne shows the entire spectrum of upholstered fur-niture: suites, armchairs, divans, stand-alone sofas, couches with special functions and sofa beds. The product ranges located in the Comfort segment combine quality with trend-conscious looks and a high degree of practi-cality. Both Halls are virtually booked out.

Taken as a whole, the imm cologne is the biggest and most international upholstery show in the world – across all quality and design categories.

Prime in Halls 5.1 and 10.1 interprets classic and fami-ly-oriented home furnishings with modern, stylish aes-thetics and consistently high quality for all range catego-ries based on tables, chairs and beds.

The Global Lifestyles segment that was launched in Halls 2.1, 3.1 and 4.1 this year is like a new world waiting to be discovered: here, individual exhibitors and group presentations from all over the world showcase a broad, sales-oriented spectrum ranging from self-assembly furniture and classic living room and bedroom furniture all the way to lighting, accessories and unusual, sculp-tural items.

LivingInteriors – the new highlight in JanuaryIn the furnishing sector, good sales are increasingly be-ing made with holistic interior concepts. Flooring, wall coverings and lighting complement furniture and thus help create interesting and attractive interior design con-

cepts. In the bathroom, individual areas of the home are merging – the bathroom is turning into a private spa. The imm cologne is responding to this interior ambience and market development with the LivingInteriors event in Hall 4.2. With their vivacious, varied and interactive presentations, national and international exhibitors will be showing holistically interpreted interior and furnish-ing concepts that create an appetite for interior design. Various event zones will be presenting variations on furnishing styles, solutions for modernising bathrooms, natural and highly functional flooring products, creative wall coverings and striking lighting scenarios. As well as trade visitors and consumers, this format also very spe-cifically targets planning professionals such as designers, architects and interior designers. The more than 120 ex-hibitors it has attracted – far more than at the premiere –underline the high level of acceptance LivingInteriors enjoys in the industry.

The next trade fair duoimm cologne // LivingInteriors will be held from13th to 19th January 2014

This is more an idea of a house than a real house. So you’ll quickly notice that there are no staircases leading up to the first floor and other basic functions are missing. But the main features are the ones I've concentrated on: what's really important in a house. I want it to be a place where the inhabitants genuinely feel at home. Where restlessness disappears and comfort takes its place. I want a feeling of a gentle, welcoming atmosphere, so that anybody invited into the house gets the feeling of this being a good place. And I want all the flexibility of in between. So it’s a place that’s good to be alone but it’s also good to fill. It can go from quiet contemplation to a great party. It’s open yet it’s private, it’s intimate yet it’s flexible. All these contrasts that I always work with have been taken into the house.

I have a theme, I have a number of secret titles to work from. One of them is "Alice in Wonderland". That’s be-cause I want to play with the adventure. I want the free-dom of her world, constantly being pulled down to earth by imm cologne: it is a commercial fair, but the conflict between Alice and imm keeps this exciting for me.

I'm playing with scale, as Alice would. So instead of mummy and daddy's double bed there are 20 metres of bed in “Das Haus”. There might even be 30 metres of bed – an awful lot of bed. And you don't just lie in the bed, you do whatever you want in the bed. You might eat in the bed, you might read in the bed, you are relaxed when you relax, not "pretend relaxed" like most of us are in most furniture. I've made a lot of furniture that's very interesting to look at, but not particularly comfortable. So I'm taking the most comfortable piece of furniture I know in the world – the bed – my favourite piece of furniture, and I'm using it as madly as I possibly can. My second favourite piece of furniture is the table. So I'm giving my-self – in “Das Haus” – endless amounts of table space.

I like tools - filling the house with tools. If you want to fix something, if you want to build something, if you want to cook something, if you want to invent something – the tools to do it are going to be there. Otherwise it's low-tech. So it's not a place for great surround sound. It's not a place for a big cinema or a flat screen television or a built in vacuum cleaner or an elevator. It's a place where you use your body to reach something.

Where you may have all your Mac products or your PC products, of course, but they're flexible, they come with you. They do not dominate the space. They are not built-in. Comfort is built into the house.
