THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE FICTION FILM

Sci-Fi 1900’s to 1930’s• The genre has existed since the early 1900’s of silent film, when “Georges Melies” A Trip to the

Moon (1902) employed trick photography effects, which was the first real example of a scince-fiction film.

• The next major example in the genre was the 1927 film Metropolis - being the first feature length science fiction movie.

• Both films were the only two break through sci-fi films from 1900’s to 1900’s which shows how undeveloped technology was and how hard it was for the idea to be brought to life.

Sci-Fi 1940’s to 1970’s• From the 1930s to the 1950s, the genre consisted mainly of low-budget films that were not on

the same level as metropolis, none of them added anything impressive or new to the sci-fi genre.• Until 1968 when Stanley Kubrick created the landmark film 2001: A Space Odyssey. After that the

science fiction genre was taken more seriously and in the late 1970’s which lead to the creation of movies such as:

• Alien • Star wars• Close encounters of the third kind• These very successful films paved the way for the blockbuster hits of next decades.

Sci-Fi 1980’s to 1990’s• Throughout the 1980’s a whole variety of sci-fi films were made such as:• E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial • The Terminator• Back to the Future• Along with a Star wars sequel, the 1980’s was the decade that the sci-fi genre really announced

itself on the scene and was the time where numerous land mark films went down in history.• Following the 1980’s came the 1990’s where a wider variety of sci-fi was introduced including the

matrix and even dinosaurs were introduced to the genre (Jurassic park)

Sci-Fi 2000’s• Also through the 2000’s some new land mark films were created and new franchises were created

and old ones were continued. This was also the decade that superhero's first appeared on the scene.
