I ask your help in enabling the life of the Church to continue, in sharing the fun and responsibilities that affect all families. With GiveCentral, there is no need to carry checks or cash to church. It makes it possible for the parish to budget. Our society is very fluid and people often travel on weekends to see family or friends. Donations through Give Central make it possible for the ongoing work of Queen of Angels to continue no matter what. Donations to GiveCentral have proven a very popular and convenient way to support the financial needs of the church. AN APPEAL TO FIFTH, SIXTH AND SEVENTH GRADERS Don’t look away. Keep reading. This is for you, yes... you. You are needed if you are a student in sixth, seventh or eighth grade who has already received First Communion. Are you currently an altar server? If so, thank you very much. Your help is appreciated by Monsignor Jim, Father Harry, Father Dan and all members of the congregation. If not, don’t wrinkle your nose and look the other way. This is really meant for you. Your help is needed. Altar servers assist the priest and play an active role in Mass. If you like to be where the action is or if you are quiet and don’t like to speak in public, being a server is for you. Being a server can be for everyone. Because you are part of it all, Mass makes more sense. Being a server helps your faith become more real. Serving is an opportunity to pray in a different way. Weddings, funerals, Masses for the sacraments and Stations of the Cross all require the participation of good servers. We need a few more dedicated young people who will come to Mass when they are scheduled to serve, fully engage in the duties of a server, pay attention to their surroundings and help things go smoothly for the celebrating priest. There’s no need to get nervous: all training is provided, first by adults and then by your fellow altar servers who will help you get accustomed to your role. Take the leap to help your faith grow in ways you never imagined. Being a server is a gift to yourself and your parish. Interested? Call the Parish Center at 773-539-7510.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE! There is still time to contribute to the 2015 Easter Collection. If you were unable to attend Mass at Queen of Angels during the Easter Weekend, feel free to use the designated envelope in your packet, or an Easter envelope available at church or even a plain envelope with the word “Easter.” We need to meet our budget goal and your donation will be most appreciated.

HELPING THOSE IN NEED, NOW CATHOLIC CHARITIES ASKS FOR ASSISTANCE Helping people in need since 1917, Catholic Charities (CC) of the Archdiocese of Chicago is one of the largest private, not-for-profit social service agencies in the Midwest. Annually Catholic Charities assists more than 1 million people in Cook and Lake counties without regard to religious, ethnic or economic background. Catholic Charities strives to be efficient: 92 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to CC programs. Catholic Charities fulfills the Church’s role in the mission of charity by providing compassionate, competent, professional services that strengthen and support individuals, families and communities. By providing food, clothing, shelter, counseling and other services to those in need, Catholic Charities brings hope to the hopeless. Clients can access a comprehensive network of services that range from food pantries to mental health counseling, affordable housing, senior services and everything in between. The Catholic Charities goal is to help each client become as self-sufficient as possible. The staff of more than 3,000 is well-trained and dedicated to the mission. Catholic Charities also partners with 243 parishes in Cook and Lake counties to bring services into communities. Catholic Charities is also aided by more than 15,000 volunteers. Last year alone: More than a quarter of a million people received food, clothing, shelter, rent and utility assistance at the Emergency Assistance

sites in Chicago, Cicero, Des Plaines, Worth, South Holland, Waukegan and Summit.

Nearly 70,000 people were served a warm meal at the Evening Supper program.

Early care and education was provided to more than 1,500 children ages six weeks to 12 years at one of the agency’s Child Development Centers.

Catholic Charities helped others like Darla who had no income and lived with her children in a condemned building. Catholic Charities brought the family to one of their shelters. Counselors helped her find work and permanent housing. She and her children were among the 991 individuals sheltered last year by the service agency. There will be a special collection for Catholic Charities on Mother’s Day, May 10. Funds collected will go towards maintaining the high quality services provided since 1917. On Mother’s Day, why not make a donation in the name of someone who helped you in a time of need? Please give to Catholic Charities on Mother’s Day to help homeless families and others get back on their feet. Learn more at www.catholiccharities.net.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD This Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally referred to as “Good Shepherd Sunday.” Today we listen to the words of the Lord as he refers to himself as the “good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep.” It is sometimes so difficult for us to grasp the reality that anyone would lay down his or her own life for the sake of someone else. This is especially true in a society that places high value on power and personal advancement, often at the cost of “trampling” on other people in order to climb the ladder. Today’s scriptures point to the one we are called to emulate—the one who lays down his life for his sheep. Today’s scriptures challenge us to discover ways to bring life to those around us—to build up rather than to tear down. Copyright J.S. Paluch Co.

REMEMBERING A LOVED ONE AT MASS We remember the birthdays of those deceased and living, the wedding and death anniversaries of people important to us, even favorite saint days. Why not share those memories and love through a mass intention, the uniquely Catholic way for people to remember those who mean so much? Mass intentions are a comforting way to offer support to someone suffering a loss. There are no words to ease their grief but prayer always helps. A Mass intention is a way of asking our parish community to pray and remember with us, to share in the memories or hope of someone for whom we pray. Mass intentions may be offered in the name of friends or relatives, living or deceased, for special prayers or on the occasions of death anniversaries, birthdays, wedding anniversaries, illnesses or surgeries. Suggested donation is $10 per Mass. For more information, call 773-539-7510.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION FRIDAYS Queen of Angels offers Eucharistic Adoration in order to deepen our life of prayer. Exposition is from 9 to 10 a.m. in the adoration chapel each Friday after weekday Mass. At least two adorers must be present. Bring your thoughts and whatever helps you to pray quietly: your Rosary, favorite prayer cards, your Bible or other spiritual reading, or select from the adoration lending library.

JEWISH ROOTS OF CATHOLIC CHARITY Parishioner and Associate Judge Thomas More Donnelly will moderate the Jewish Roots of Catholic Charity at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 7 at Jenner and Block, 353 N. Clark St. Presenter Gary A. Anderson is the Hesburgh Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame and author of Charity: The Place of the Poor in Biblical Tradition. It has long been acknowledged that Jews and Christians distinguished themselves through charity to the poor. Though ancient Greeks and Romans were also generous, they funded theaters and baths rather than poorhouses and orphanages. How might we explain this difference? In this significant reappraisal of charity in the biblical tradition, Dr. Anderson argues that the poor constituted the privileged place where Jews and Christians met God. The event is free and open to the public but advanced registration is required. For more information or to register online, go to www.lumenchristi.org.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Many of our customs surrounding critical illness come from antiquity, and yet attitudes have certainly changed. Death was an all‑too-familiar presence then, and people tended to see it as a natural and unavoidable part of life, not a personal catastrophe. People tried to review their lives, settle their affairs, say farewell to their dear ones, and welcome the deathbed vigils and prayers that assured them of God’s love and forgiveness. What people most feared was sudden death. It was dreaded and never discussed. The faithful filled the catacombs with consoling images of the good shepherd carrying the sheep to safe pasture, or the faithful in glory seated at banquet tables. The prayer texts from the time are consoling and positive, and many inspired our modern prayers. The care of the dying flowed directly from Roman pagan practice; it was home‑based and family‑centered. Pagans didn’t especially fear death, but they were terrified by the dead. Christians, on the other hand, consoled their sick with psalms of joy and faith in the Resurrection. The goal was to assure the sick person of God’s love, and that the ties that bind the dead and the living would endure.

GOD’S WORD TODAY What does it mean to gather together in the name of Jesus? Today’s scriptures give us a hint. Saint Peter tells us that it was in the name of Jesus that the crippled man was healed. The psalm reminds us that Jesus is the stone rejected by the builders that has become the cornerstone. And Jesus himself reminds us in today’s Gospel that he is the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep. So today we gather in the name of the one who is healer, a rejected stone that became the cornerstone, a good shepherd, and ultimately the one who laid down his own life to save us from our sins. Let us absorb the richness of the Lord Jesus made present in the proclamation of today’s readings. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright © J. S. Paluch Company
