December is the most popular time of the year to get engaged (about 16 per cent of all proposals happen this month), closely followed by

Valentine’s Day. So we have decided to launch our first ever wedding-themed issue.

Whether you are getting married in 2015 or 2016 (or even later, we know what you brides can be like for forward planning!) or a guest at a wedding, we have style news, venue news and fitness news in this issue.

This New Year’s Eve saw my fifth wedding anniversary to my beautiful wife Keeley. Our family has grown somewhat in size since that magical day at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, with the addition of two dogs and two babies.

This is one of my favourite times of the year (not just because it is my birthday in February!) but as the season changes into spring, the property market changes too. After the stress of Christmas, the winter colds of January, by February people are itching for a change and we have a surge in sales and lettings.

Happy reading and congratulations to those newly engaged!

A s a relatively newbie to Dorset living, entering the pastures beyond the chain ferry still feels like another world. To an urbanite, born and bred, like me, the heather-lined roads that adorn Studland are so picturesque

they still take my breathe away as I chundle over the 300 yard gap from Sandbanks.

As formentioned, I am not familiar as to what ‘once was’ before The Pig on the Beach, the inhibiting manor house owned by the Aristocratic Bankes family or the former, and from what I hear rather tired, Manor House Hotel.

However, I am familiar with The Pig ‘brand’ having spent a good number of lovely occasions at its sister hotel and kitchen in Brokenhurst. Therefore, The Pig on the Beach had a lot to live up to!

Despite its quirky yellow turreted presence, driving up to The Pig on the Beach doesn’t have quite the ‘wow’ factor as the New Forest location. However, this DOES NOT MATTER as the views from the hotel itself are incredible. Straight over the cliff top and out over Studland Bay, the bluest of sea surrounded by the unspoilt land surrounding. Happy guests where braving the chilly air to sit in the grounds with a drink, absorbing the magnificent views stretching across to the Isle of Wight and round to the chalk cliffs of Old Harry Rocks.

The Pig on the Beach has many similarities to its Brokenhurst outpost, shabby chic décor, wonky floorboards, roaring open fires, mismatched furnishings and staff that wouldn’t look out of place on a London Fashion Week catwalk. The restaurant set-up is similar too with dining taking place in a garden inspired conservatory with trade-mark terracotta tiled floor and potted kitchen herbs on each table.

The Pig’s signature “25 Mile Menu” changes daily to include ingredients from the in-house forager as well as the garden and local suppliers. The menu featured more seafood than expected (the Brockenhurst restaurant is quite ‘meat heavy’) however, looking around the dining room, the dish du jour appeared to be Bath chap, basically a cooked pigs head, teeth and all, served on a wooden chopping board.

I steered clear of the pigs head (despite its rave reviews) and opted for hake for my main, which I have eaten before at the Pig in the Forest, albeit dressed differently, yet just as delicious. It is basically impossible to leave The Pig, however stuffed you feel, without indulging in one of the homemade puddings. So I went for the ‘custard slice, served with poached pair’ and wow! Worth every single calorie!

Coffee and ‘piggy fours’ followed and I loved the special touch of putting a piggy shape in chocolate on the froth of the coffee.

The Pig on the Beach is indulgence at its best, the service is top rate and views out of this world, ideal for anyone looking to treat a loved one, or just get away from the rat race for some R&R.

Food – 5Service – 5Ambience – 5Would I recommend this to a friend – yes

Turning Cauliflower into couscous, without couscous? Yes it’s possible, a totally carb and grain free, light tabbouleh salad to accompany any spicy winter Middle Eastern dish.

We serve it with our aubergine & cumin hummus wraps every Thursday! Or why not try it at our winter pop-up salad bar at Zoukinis in Westbourne.

The clever bit is whizzing the raw cauli around in the magimix for 10 seconds so that it turns from cauli sized chunks into grain sized pieces, then you just treat it like couscous!

INGREDIENTS

One whole cauliflower Tsp of bouillon organic stock powderOne red onionOne large tomatoOne bunch of mintOne bunch of flat leaf parsley

Half a cucumberOne lemonGlug of olive oilPinch of good quality sea salt

DIRECTIONS

Take the outer leaves and the main stem off the cauli, cut into roughly three pieces, small enough to put into your blender. Set with the rotor blades at the base of the machine. Then blitz the cauli until you can see its grain size, take the lid off and feel the grains to make sure you are happy.

Bring half a pan of water to the boil (boiling the kettle first saves loads of time) Once simmering add a teaspoon of the stock powder to the pan and give a quick wisk as stock tends to clump together, then tip in your cauli grains. Because of the size of the tiny grains it shouldn’t take longer then three minutes. Drain with a fine gauze and leave to sit. Don’t rinse as it washes the

stock and flavour away.

Finely dice half a small red onion, whole tomato and half a cucumber, making sure you scoop the pips out first. Too much pulp could mean the salad is soggy, so keep it to the firmer parts of the veg, the smaller the dice the better. It should feel elegant and not too chunky.

Finally, finely chop four parts parsley to one part mint, which I find is a good ratio. I go hard on the parsley in this dish! Juice half the lemon. Then mix all your ingredients together, a small pinch of sea salt and drizzle with your best olive oil.

Tabbouleh is fantastic with all Middle Eastern dishes and just loves spicy flavours, it can even be eaten on it’s own with warm flat bread and a good dollop of hummus! Or try swapping the cauli for carrot and adding cooked beetroot for a pink & orange Tabbouleh base!

A wedding day is synonymous with all things romantic, fanciful, colourful and dreamy.. this ‘perfect day’ is marked by a celebration of family,

friends, hymns, food, drink, cheeky speeches, bad dance moves and of course the wedding dress.

So, generally speaking as this event is one of formality it is therefore a given that the appropriate attire is worn,

although guests eyes will be directed towards the bride, we shouldn’t dismiss our duty to uphold our

intentions to dress to impress. If you are one half of a couple then you should share some fun

with complementing each other’s outfit, if you are a single man then this occasion

is the ideal opportunity to shine when it comes to

preparing a striking ensemble. If that isn’t enough inspiration then

there’s always the ‘wedding photos’ to

contend with.

The safest option, if you find yourself in any doubt is a well-measured suit, a stylish and refined jacket and trousers teamed with an eloquent shirt/tie combination. Shoes to be in keeping with time honoured tradition.Depending on the season or indeed the location, the trend for most wedding attire would see a colour theme run throughout.. these colours are conventionally pastel shades such as yellows, dusty pinks and sky blues.. in more recent years we’ve seen a resurgence of vintage wedding themes where as we see shades of mint, wheat, blush and neutral greys.

If you know the bride and groom well, then complementing your outfit with their desired colour theme would make a seemingly admirable gesture.

It might be noted that trying too hard in this area may also result in looking like you wanted desperately to be one of the groomsmen without the invite! So a carefully planned balance should tick this box.

It is also important to mention that unless the wedding is black and white themed it’s perhaps best to stay clear of anything that resembles a tuxedo or indeed a pin/chalk stripe as this can verge on a more business-like occasion.

A great choice is a clean, slim silhouette, grey suit such as a wool Tiger Of Sweden ‘Nedvin’ a superb choice for most formal affairs.. the high crochet, slim lapels and jetted flap pockets along with Herris trousers featuring low waist and slim leg is a trendy alternative to the classic gents suit and will project you into the forefront of fashion. As grey is a neutral colour, it therefore becomes a lot easier to dress with colour. For example navy doesn’t sit well with a black suit and vice-versa, so grey is a blank canvas ready for whatever palette you decide to add to it.

A first option could be a crisp white shirt, this will enhance the suit and complement an array of tie choices.. if your chosen preference is to take it one step further and wear a French cuff, this will allow you to include cuff links.

WEDDING FASHION By Poole based image consultant Xanthe Grace

This issue of The Green we are focusing on the upcoming wedding season so I thought I would start my first 2015 fashion column with a bang

and feature this amazing Julian Macdonald creation. This (1) was showcased at last autumn’s London Fashion Week. It is covered in diamonds and pearls and has an equally breathtaking £4 million price tag.

Back in the real world, bridal fashion has moved away from the strapless cream dress style that has been in vogue for more than a decade. Last years crop of celebrity brides showed a diverging array of styles.

This beautiful Alice Temperely (2) dress as worn by Millie Mackintosh at her wedding to rap singer Professor Green was whimsical and romantic and complimented her slim frame.

American socialite Olivia Palermo wore this very unusual Caroline Herrera outfit (3) for her wedding day. For some it may be too casual and the blue shoes were an odd choice, but it was a very striking look overall.

The two most high-profile unions of 2014 were the weddings of George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin (4) and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (5).

Brad and Angelina chose to get married in secret but once they revealed they had tied the knot Angelina’s dress was scutinised by the world’s media. Her Versace dress featured some unusual details that had been designed by her children.

Amal’s dress was designed by Givenchy and the lace detailing and the voluminous train certainly gave it the wow factor.

So New Year, new you? Hummm, me neither. My devotion to the gym is year round, I’m not embarking upon a fad diet and there’s no way I’m going dry for January. I am useless with resolutions and I think that is one of the reasons I love fashion so much. I would rather the fashion industry think of ways to reinvent itself, to save me bothering.

Browsing high street ranges and perusing January fashion magazines is always exciting and it’s clear there

are lots of trends to embrace in the coming months.

The big colour trend for spring is white (6). It is cool and crisp as well as being high maintenance, however it does always have a sophisticated south of France vibe about it.

Sheer fabrics are going to be everywhere this spring. At first this trend seems rather daunting, but clever layering can make it work in your everyday wardrobe.

Here (7) is Marc Jacob’s take on the trend.

The high street has plenty of versions on offer. This sheer long white silk blouse is from Massimo Dutti (8) (£64.95).

This striking ASOS metallic pink skirt (9) is £60.00.

This sheer top by Pop CPH (10) (£32.00) is more likely to come in handy once the weather has warmed.

Pleats are also going to be in vogue this spring, however if you aren’t brave enough to go for a pleated skirt then a pleated shirt is a way of embracing the trend without going over the top. This pretty powder blue top is from Warehouse (11) (£12).

This elegant white top (12) is from ASOS at £32.00.

The 1970’s influence is prevalent this season and one fabric that always springs to mind from that era is suede. Derek Lam featured this stunning patchwork skirt (13).

On the high street this purple suede skirt (14) is from H&M (£40).

This brown suede skirt (15) is from ASOS (£45).

Another trend that is a nod to the 1970’s is fringe detailing. Olivia Palermo sums this up 70’s suede (16), fringing look perfectly in this outfit.

These ASOS shoes (17) are £35.00

Zara features a gorgeous fringe jacket (18) (£79.00).

Newborn photography is now a popular lifestyle choice for many new parents. As the genre has become more popular in the

UK in recent years, after first becoming en vogue in America, families throughout the country are now generating an unprecedented demand, which has in turn led to an increasing number of photographers offering a newborn photography service.

Yet, when parents come to select a newborn photographer – someone in whom they are to trust handling and manoeuvring their precious just-born baby – it can undoubtedly prove difficult to decide who to choose. Should they select solely on price? Or are there other factors to consider?

Since there is currently no official qualification that a photographer offering a newborn photography service needs to achieve, unfortunately the industry is, in effect, unregulated. To put it bluntly, anyone with a camera could potentially claim to be a newborn photography professional, and I can say for certain that there are many very unprofessional, unexperienced people doing just that!

It genuinely frightens me to think of how these so-called ‘professional’ newborn photographers must be handling the newborn babies presented to them. Without any professional training whatsoever, and therefore without having learnt the essential skills of how to safely handle babies, photographers are out there trying out baby poses and positioning these young children in potentially dangerous ways.

And all the while, the unwitting parents are none the wiser to the danger that they have put their babies in since they’ve probably never had newborn photos taken before, and they’ve trusted and believed the claims of the ‘professional’ photographer without question.

I believe there’s also huge concern about those newborn photographers who are promising a photo session and photos for just £20! In my view, such a price can only reflect the fact that the photographer is sub-standard and potentially unsafe.

Ideally all newborn photographers would adhere to a professional code of conduct that is designed to safeguard babies and their parents. My hope is that in time, organisations such as the Baby and Newborn Photography Association (BANPAS) will be able to make this a reality.

I’ll undoubtedly blog about this topic again in the future as this subject is one very close to my heart and there is so much more to say. In the mean time I’d love to hear your opinions, and to learn what factors made you choose your newborn photographer, whether you used me or someone else. Please comment and I look forward to reading your responses.

Until next time,

A client recently remarked to me that she didn’t realise what a mess her back was in until she starting having massage treatment. My first

thought was that this kind of reaction from a client doesn’t sound too positive! However, as I found through discussing the issue there is more to this comment that I initially thought.

Sometimes we experience pain as sharp and intense following a fall or a sporting injury for instance. More often though pain can gradually creep up over a longer period of time and our bodies get used to the feeling. The busy pace of life can mean that we simply don’t have time to address the pain so we try to ignore it or mask it with pain killers. This type of chronic pain can be due to the overuse of muscles related to our occupation or other repetitive activities such as carrying children. Stress is another factor which can cause muscles to tighten up or to make an existing problem worse.

The client with the ‘messed up’ back has now stopped having to take painkillers and her pain levels have significantly reduced. She also now has an increased body awareness and so is able to identify when her back is starting to tighten up and what might be causing this, ultimately giving her more control over the situation.

If you would like to discuss how massage treatment may benefit you please call Juliet Miller on 07946608093.

Get in Shape for your Wedding DayWith Alex Chisnall’s Not in The Gym Personal Training

Do you want to look back at your wedding day and think how amazing you looked, or hide the photos down the back of the sofa?

Unsurprisingly, weddings are a big trigger for getting in shape.

According to Brides.com, 80% of budding brides will change their exercise or eating habits for the big day. But when you’re going it alone, drumming up the motivation can seem impossible.

If you hire a personal trainer or get involved in a group fitness camp, however, you’re far more likely to succeed. Why? Because having the added accountability and encouragement increases your motivation tenfold. All for one and one for all!

Alex Chisnall’s Not In The Gym Fitness Camp on Ashley Cross Green is right on your doorstep. With each session focused on fun, upbeat exercise that burns fat, tones muscles and heightens confidence, even the most reluctant bride-to-be will see the benefit.

And for those who need one-on-one support, you can opt for Not In The Gym Personal Training, which means no wriggling out of sessions. Your goal is their goal!

If you’re serious about looking and feeling amazing on your wedding day, there’s no point in procrastinating – a month from now you’ll wish you had started today. So get booking!

In the meantime, here are a few tips from Alex himself…

Keep eatingNot eating enough can sabotage your weight loss efforts just as much as overeating. That’s because your body goes into starvation mode, holding onto all the calories you consume and turning them into fat. So eat, just eat well!

Think about the dressThe upper arms, upper back and shoulders command the most attention when it comes to wedding dresses. For a strapless dress, work the shoulders, biceps and triceps. For a backless dress, work the core and back muscles.

Get the look that lastsStrengthening your core helps you stand taller and straighter, giving your neck and shoulders that nice lean look. For the quickest overall wedding workout, you just need dumbbells and a stability ball. They’ll give your core a really effective workout and tone all your basic muscle groups.

Train with a friendFor a ‘we’re in it together’ attitude, train with one of your bridesmaids or even your husband-to-be. It’s a great way to spend quality time together and you can share the cost. Plus, it adds extra encouragement and a splash of (friendly!) competition.

Wedding approaching! In the last few days before your wedding, relax. It’s too late to change your shape now, so just make sure you drink plenty of water and eat well.

Alongside his Not In The Gym Fitness Camp and Personal Training, Alex Chisnall’s Body Clinics at the Sandbanks Yacht Co. and Littledown Centre offer Sports Massage and Injury Therapy to balance the body and ease tension. So after a hard training session, you can surrender yourself to healing hands. Bliss!

It’s competition time! Are you getting married in 2015? Not In The Gym would like to offer 2015 brides-to-be the chance to win a 12-Week Body Transformation

When Fred and I got married nearly 4 years ago we strongly agreed on one

thing. Lets try and keep the wedding stress free. In our eyes this meant as few logistical problems as possible. So when I found Kingston Country Courtyard over near Corfe I knew that it was the venue that ticked that box. Not only is it a beautiful farm conversion set in the most stunning of countryside but we could also have everything under one roof. Service, catering, booze, accommodation and party all in one place orchestrated by fantastic wedding and events Director Bobbie Brown and her team. No coaches to book, no booze licences to sort and no portaloos to worry about. You can have up to 120 seated for the meal and then invite

even more to party in the evening if you choose, which we did with the help of Jim Etherington and his band. We took over the entire venue for the weekend, which was wonderful. Having friends and family around us to enjoy the Dorset countryside and who also mucked in with decorating really made the wedding. They also have recommended suppliers for flowers and even vintage décor so all you really have to sort out is who is going to sit next to Great Aunt Ethel and who’s going to keep tabs on that certain family member from causing a scene, we all have one!

Getting married on the beach, barefoot, in gorgeous sunshine, with stunning views…is a dream

for many brides and grooms. However, for most there is also a long haul flight and the logistics of getting family and friends to a far-flung location to contend with.

Funnily enough, Dorset doesn’t spring to mind when one dreams of ocean-side nuptials. But, Bournemouth beach is the only place in England and Wales that you can legally take your vows right on the sand.

Unsurprisingly, since launching in October 2011, Beach Weddings Bournemouth, the company behind holding weddings on Bournemouth beach, has enjoyed unrivalled success and has scooped a plethora of national and regional awards.

Beach Weddings Bournemouth offers a range of services to suit most weddings from small and intimate service only affairs to full wedding breakfast and receptions. The ceremonies themselves take place in a quintessentially English beach hut on the sand. With 800 square meters of space surrounding the hut available, a large marquee can be erected, catering for the reception too. Quirky extras include a vintage ice cream stall and parasols to shield guests from the blazing sun or the odd shower.

The pièce de résistance is the bride arriving via the West Cliff Lift, offering breathtaking views over the sea, Isle of Wight and out to

the Purbecks, the ideal start to the big day.

Dave Price from Murakami Photography, who has been working with Beach Weddings Bournemouth to capture some of the most beautiful wedding scenes, says:

“We love Beach Weddings Bournemouth and as one of its recommended photographers we get to photograph so many stunning beach weddings.

“Each wedding has it's own unique flair and couples put so much thought into the details and how the venue will look for their big day. Directly on the beach in such a beautiful location and it always brings a smile to guests faces, which helps set the scene for informal, fun and relaxed weddings. Just the type of weddings we love to photograph!”

Dave and Teri are the multi-award winning Dorset photographers behind Murakami Photography and photograph weddings throughout Dorset and Hampshire.

For further information please visit: http://www.murakamiphotography.com or call Dave or Teri on: 01202 519659.

Readers that subscribe to The Green’s weekly e-newsletter will know that just before Christmas I was invited

to test drive Nissan’s electrical family car, the Leaf. Whilst pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed driving the Leaf, I cheekily mentioned that I would have preferred to be driving the 370Z. Well, it appears the Westover Group have kindly indulged me and provided me with the stunning sports car to test drive.

I was shown around the car by Paul Rockwell who put me through my paces. This generally involved me being told to be careful a lot. As I lowered myself in I knew what he meant though as even before I fired up the engine I felt like I was in a Fast & Furious movie. This was only amplified once you could hear the engine. I just had to remind myself that I wasn’t on a movie set.. or an autobahn… unfortunately.

Before I tell you how much I love the car, and I did love it, I’ll try and be objective and list a few negatives. The car is impossible to get in and out of in a dignified fashion unless you take at least three yoga classes a week, the visibility isn’t fantastic and the storage is almost non-existent. The boot is really more like a shelf - and a shallow one at that. Having two young children and a wife yet only one passenger seat posed a little bit of a problem so I managed to palm off the twins to my parents (though sadly not the wife). Although to be honest this is probably more of a positive as the twins have been driving us both mad recently!

My wife and I made the most of not having the children and went on a date night in the new wheels. She was sure everyone was staring at her whilst I admit that she is a stunner I think it was the car grabbing the attention. It’s hardly a subtle car but I like that. Lowered, huge alloys and roaring exhaust… the car really has the feel good factor. For me it had the perfect mix of looking like an aggressive sports car whilst providing a refined and sophisticated drive. Clearly the car is monstrously quick and driving it legally proved a real challenge. 40mph felt slow, 30mph felt like you were going backwards. Despite the refinement if you give it some welly it can transform itself into the uncouth, tail-happy hooligan you expect it to be. Thankfully there was a little lady’s voice emitting from the centre console to warn me of any impending speed cameras!

It changes direction very well, the steering provided

plenty of feedback through the alacantra-trimmed wheel, and despite Paul’s warning to be careful whilst cornering I felt like there was plenty of grip. Internally, the Recaro seats keep you firmly in position when you’re racing through the gears and I found the driving position decent. The dashboard felt a little 80’s with the illuminated orange against the black but I quite liked it. It created an ambience that made me feel I was in a cockpit of a jet which was quite apt given the power of this car.

Overall the car was immense fun. So much so I can feel the grin returning to my face as I write this review. I just wonder what car I’ll be given next… A Jaguar XF Sportbrake or perhaps the brand new Land Rover Discovery Sport? To be honest though I’m not sure if either will be as enjoyable as the Zed.

Burger Shop, Bournemouth’s first on trend gourmet Burger restaurant that launched amid

much hype in December 2013 on Old Christchurch Road, has opened its doors in Ashley Cross, at the site formerly known as Surf&Turf.

Offering a small selection of well-crafted Burgers, Hot Dogs, Wings, Salads and sides made with love, Burger Shop knows what it is, and does what it says, delivering high quality casual dining with a trendy troupe of staff, whom complement the industrial surroundings and unique soundtrack.

The Liquor Store, Burger Shop’s bar brand, delivers a tasty selection of American Beers, Shakes, Liquor, Cocktails and Craft Lagers. Here visitors can enjoy a social booze before or after their meal, or when waiting for a takeaway.

Executive Chef, Glen Dillon-Lee, has recently taken control of the kitchen for both shops, after serving Café Shore Sandbanks as senior Sous for 8 years. Glen’s talent and eye for detail has already seen a marked development in presentation, ingredients and direction across the board. February sees a new menu launching, with a simplified approach on main menu items, and a focus on regular Burger specials.

Desserts including a classic Banana Split, with a twist, will also be featured. Glen comments: “I’m excited to be leading the Burger revolution at Burger Shop in Bournemouth and Poole. The restaurants have developed a fantastic reputation and I aim to continue to improve all aspects of the food offer ongoing”.

Josh Simons, marketing director, adds: “We are delighted the shop has been

so well received in Ashley Cross so far, and would like to take this opportunity to thank all the locals for their support. We have listened intently to every piece of feedback and have made adjustments accordingly. The team

are excited as we continue with our expansion plans in 2015”.

Cherished as one of Britain’s favourite singers, The Green caught up with Welsh mezzo soprano Katherine Jenkins ahead of her UK-wide arena

tour with a date at the Bournemouth Pavillion on Saturday 21st February . Katherine has achieved meteoric success as the world’s most prolific classical crossover artist having sold in excess of eight million copies of her albums and has gone platinum all around the world.

She has received numerous accolades for her recordings, including two Classical BRITs for the coveted Album of the Year Award and headlined the Queen’s Coronation Festival at Buckingham Palace. Katherine has also cemented her position as one of the UK’s greatest exports touring South Africa, the US, China, Abu Dhabi and Europe.

Yet, the former schoolteacher, from Neath, has remained remarkably grounded.

It has been an extraordinarily exceptional year for Katherine, who was awarded an OBE for her services to music and charity, got married in a whirlwind romance to American film director Andrew Levitas and released her 10th solo studio album, Home Sweet Home.

It is not only her career that is stratospheric, physically, too, the marathon-runner is in the best shape of her life. Particularly since she appeared on America’s take on Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing With The Stars in 2012 (she came second), Katherine has been in peak fitness and despite being on a grueling, 21-day tour of the nation, fitness is a priority.

She told The Green; “It's really important that when your away from home and tired from touring, to look after yourself and eat well. We have an amazing chef who cooks delicious fish and veggies for me. I also don't drink alcohol when I'm on tour as it affects my voice.“I am an avid runner and last time I was in Bournemouth I did some marathon training along the sea front. Such a beautiful run... And of course, then you've earned the delicious fish and chips afterwards!”

“If you’re strong, because your voice is your instrument, it’s only going to help you. So being fit helps my mind and it helps my body.”

Katherine was signed by record company Decca aged 23 but took a short break from the partnership to release her ninth album. However, the latest release, Home Sweet Home has seen her return to Decca and revert to the traditional classical sound that she is famed for.

“It's been lovely going back to Decca, they really understand classical music. I have a great team behind me - some of which were there when I was previously was with Decca! This album feels like full circle for me, going back to the label I was originally signed by and

going back to my roots musically. I can't believe this is my tenth year and tenth album - I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity to make so many! And this album has certainly been a reflection of that.

“I wanted this album to be rooted with classical repertoire, which had an anthemic experience to it. Songs you would associate with big national events whether that be sporting, musical or royal.

Although passionate about her music and career, it is clear that Katherine is a family-girl at heart. Following her recent marriage, it is understandably hard for her to embark on a tour without her husband.

“In between tour dates, I spend as much time as possible with my husband and my family. I love to spend time at home, cooking for everyone and catching up. I would choose that over a celeb party any day!”

Proud of her Welsh roots, Katherine’s tour culminates at a huge show in her homeland on Saturday 14th March. “I've finally recorded Land of My Fathers (the Welsh national anthem) after 10 years...I can't believe this hadn't been done sooner!”

With a figure to die for, Katherine also has a wardrobe that most women would be envious of. “For each show on the tour I tend to have four to five dresses. Usually they are designed and made especially for me. Suzanne Neville has created many of my stage gowns - she always does such a beautiful job.”

We finish the interview asking Katherine, who states Judy Garland, Mozart, Barbra Streisand and Shirley Bassey as her inspirations, to offer some advice to any readers wishing to embark on a career in music, as gracefully as ever, she says: “I always advise young singers to immerse themselves in as much music as possible. Join choirs, take singing lessons, enter competitions, become a member of your local amateur operatic society...all these will give you a wealth of good experience so that you are prepared for that lucky break!

Katherine Jenkins OBE will be performing with special guest John Owen-Jones at the Bournemouth International Centre on Saturday 21 February.

Does your child express an interest in Ballet or Performing Arts?

Well it's been all over the news recently like a well-endowed seductress on an animal print chaise lounge. The debate on the forever polarizing issue of topless

images on Page 3 reached a crescendo on Monday when it was announced by The Sun's sister paper, the Times, it was to be no more. The polemic that followed threw up a whole range of reactionary presupposition on both sides of the divide, equally as assured in their own notions of the rights and wrongs of a national newspaper using images of bare breasts.

In principle, I am, by default, a ‘feminist’; it would be rather contrary not to be so. But I'm increasingly getting enraged by this new wave of 'uber feminist' mantra that has spawned from a once much more considered, and less reactionary movement. The main protagonists (by and large well-educated, well-heeled and nearly always media-basking women ) feel it is incumbent on them to speak on behalf of all of us, a 'voice' for the gender, and in so doing run the risk of infuriating those of us who set our own 'feminist' agendas, on our own terms.

Personally speaking, I am not in the least bit offended by the sight of the female form, in a sexualised context or not. I do not hold to the belief that the viewing of purposefully titillating imagery necessarily objectifies or degrades. In a sense, we ALL objectify each other; we subconsciously assess the attractiveness of fellow human beings every day of our lives. Without such inherent instincts we cease to be a species. The anti - Page 3 voices often slip into emotive terminology in this context, frequently using disparaging words like 'leering' and 'ogling'. Simply put, if you are a man who likes to glance at a semi-naked female, you are, by default, profligate, a deviant. Well I for one hold men in much greater esteem than that, I sincerely believe that the male of the species can 'appreciate' without objectifying.

The crux of the whole debate really boils down to context, and whether such imagery should be included in a 'family' newspaper. A fair discussion to have, but since when has any newspaper been a 'family' publication? And are not children surrounded by sexualised images of both men and women everywhere anyway? If you are going to argue that topless images should be consigned to history, then you must argue that equivalent imagery be banned from every billboard, computer game and television advert in existence. And if you do argue for that, the end result would be to restrict the choices and freedoms that women themselves have fought long and hard for. Ultimately, the only real issue for me is that of consent, of freedom of expression and of choice. My feminist doctrine holds fast to the view that women should be free to choose what they wish to do, whether that be high court judge, professional footballer, stay at home mum or topless model.

The Sun has subsequently announced that Page 3 is to continue. From a personal standpoint I am wholly phlegmatic as to whether it continues or not, but my indifference does not extend to the vociferous 'anti' voices who would be far better placed banging very loud drums regarding such issues as sex trafficking, 'honour' killings, domestic violence and the horrors of female genital mutilation. Every moment spent campaigning against the beginning is time not spent facing down the malignancy of the genuine subjugation of women. We need to reassess our priorities and instead of championing populist causes, focus on the real issues for women today.

Humphries Kirk, based on Church Road, Ashley Cross can help with legal matters both personal to you and for your business. In this

issue of The Green, the Commercial Property team offers advice for those thinking of taking a lease on a shop or buying a freehold unit.

How do you decide whether to lease or buy? This will depend on the type of premises you want. A ground floor shop or an office suite in a building is likely to be let by the freeholder and you will agree terms for a new lease or take an assignment of an existing Lease, often for a relatively short time, say six years, but with the ability to renew at the end of the term. With whole units or buildings, often the freehold or a long leasehold is available to purchase.

What do we do for you?Whether it’s a letting or a purchase, we submit various

searches for you, to ascertain as much information about the property as possible, such as current and historic planning permissions, services and the environmental history of the property. We deal with enquiries which need to be raised with the seller and negotiate the written terms of any contract, lease or transfer. We will also check the seller’s title to the property and advise you of any covenants or rights affecting it.

Should you have a survey?A survey is always important to ensure you know what condition the property is in and to identify any areas which are in need of repair, even for a short term lease as there will be repairing obligations in it. Any major repairs should be dealt with by the seller before you complete your purchase or lease. If you are buying with the aid of a mortgage, your lender will have the property valued but generally the buyer cannot rely on that and it is not as detailed as a survey.

Do you need to insure the property?Yes, generally from exchange of contracts, unless you are taking a lease and the lease provides for the Landlord to insure the property.

Is Stamp Duty payable?Like residential properties, any transfer or lease of a commercial property may require a payment of Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) on the purchase price or the annual rent paid under the lease. The last budget did not change the SDLT rates on commercial properties and on a freehold purchase, the rate starts at one per cent for purchases over £150,000 and increases to four per cent on purchases over £500,000. For a lease, SDLT is calculated on the annual rent and varies with every transaction depending on the rent and the length of term; however, for most leases granted for a short term and at a low rent, no SDLT is payable.

While here at Buckholme Towers we relish the prospect of a new year, bringing new opportunities and a certain anticipation, the rest of the world of

education is not feeling quite so optimistic.

Following the recent publication of school league tables, it appears that the majority of parents take little or no notice of them. According to a recent review reported on by the BBC, only around 20% of parents rate them as important. In my mind, there is no doubt that league tables are a wholly negative experience for most schools.

So, what do parents rate as important when choosing a school? Well, number one is the quality of the staff, i.e. are they fully qualified, supportive, friendly, engaging and focussed on the individual child?

Buckholme Towers is a small school with a big heart. Although it is no longer a legal requirement for teaching staff to be qualified, all of our teachers are professionally qualified, and, because class numbers are small (currently averaging 13 in a class), they know their pupils extremely well; they identify strengths and weaknesses and ensure individuals are motivated and inspired. Those teachers are supported by a high number of qualified Teaching Assistants, who also know the children very well and who support the teachers in helping the children to achieve their potential. In short, qualified adults are there for the pupils every step of the way.

What else are parents looking for? Only 40% of them put their faith in inspection reports, while a similar number look for a good track record in dealing with bullying and bad behaviour. In a small school like ours, unsociable behaviour is much more noticeable meaning it can be nipped in the bud quickly and easily and the spotlight shines brightly on individuals, and in every sense. In the classroom there is nowhere to ‘hide’, no opportunity to switch off and certainly nowhere to misbehave. High performance is encouraged at every opportunity, whether on the sports field, on the stage, or in the classroom. With regard to inspections, while they may be flawed by the ‘one size fits all approach’, there is no doubt in my mind that they force schools to scrutinise practice, and this can only be a positive thing.

As for the New Year at Buckholme, I am really pleased to say that despite the challenges of league tables and inspection reports, we are feeling very optimistic about the prospect of providing an even better educational experience for every single one of our pupils.

Mark Masters is owner of Ashley Cross content marketing consultancy The ID Group.

His new book, The Content Revolution, looks at the opportunity for businesses to adopt an owned media mindset.

Control is now well and truly with the business owner.Until recently, businesses have been at the whim of the media. The media has controlled dialogue with its audience by setting pricing structures that companies have had to engage in. Budget gave you rented space to target an audience that belonged to someone else.

Throughout the 20th and part of the 21st century, we (businesses) have had to rely on others to distribute our messages and collateral. However, the law has now changed.

Affordable technology is now letting businesses shape what we say and whom we say it to, but more importantly we can become more creative than ever before with less money. Creating engaging content is changing the landscape for both businesses and individuals looking to build credibility, influence, and trust. The key is the movement from interruption to becoming useful, and the transition from paid-for media to having control of the platforms you use and ownership of what is yours.

It’s not only the platforms that represent the opportunity but also the infrastructure that now gives us freedom. According to Start-Up Britain, an initiative of the CFE (Centre For Entrepreneurs), there were 581,173 new

businesses started by British entrepreneurs in 2014 (as of 31st December 2014). This is up from 526, 446 in 2013 and 484, 224 in 2012.

More businesses entering our respective marketplaces highlights the freedom and ease to make that decision to discover new spaces, build new audiences, and generate a customer base.

What was once a vision and a desire to break free from the responsibilities of working for someone else is now a reality. People are now looking to control their own journeys by starting their own businesses.

The vision can now be realized at a more cost-effective level where we can build our platform online and offline, have a dialogue with an audience, and stand up and be noticed.

The barriers to begin a business are now lower than they have ever been. Although the majority of small and medium businesses account for 99.9% of all private-sector businesses in the UK, according to Business Population Estimates (BPE), the majority of businesses think and act the same. To build a successful business you need to stand out from the crowd.

The Content Revolution is now available to pre-order from Amazon. Scheduled for release this [email protected]@heyidgroupwww.theidgroup.co.uk
