GRADUATE ENGINEERING TRAINEE
PROGRAM / RECRUITMENT DRIVE OF 2011
“Excellence is an art that is won by training and habituation.”
This tenet was followed to the word at the recently concluded
Graduate Engineering Trainee Program / Recruitment Drive of 2011. It was
one of the principal events of the current year. The entire event itself was
based on a similar and successful event held in the year 2010, drawing from
the positives and learning from the negative points of the Graduate
Engineering Trainee Program / Recruitment Drive of 2010.
The aim of the program was to build a formidable work force
comprising of highly capable, motivated and skilled engineers to be deployed
across the various engineering teams in WSES. The event was organized on
the DD of MMMM, 2011. A pivotal decision taken by the management was to
focus the entire program on diploma graduates due to their practical
training. This enabled the WSES evaluators and interviewers to focus more
attention on one particular group of graduates at a time for coherent and
more effective screening procedures resulting in better graduates.
Experienced human resource vendors in collaboration with the HR
department of WSES were responsible for the pivotal task of getting the word
out there to diploma graduates and HR’s from top colleges to track and
short-list the prospective applicants. An elaborate and well-thought master
plan to carry out all the logistics of the event was drafted well ahead of time
by the Operations team and carried out accordingly at the crunch time. At
the end of this gargantuan task, around 200 aspirants were short-listed to
attend the Graduate Engineering Trainee Program / Recruitment Drive.
The clubhouse at Platinum City was exclusively booked by WSES to
host the event and effectively handle the large number of applicants in an
organized fashion. Volunteers for all the various engineering teams were
stationed at different posts to help, to guide and to resolve any issues the
applicants might have. A simple, yet effective, hierarchical order was
established between the management, the evaluators and the volunteers
which helped in providing and maintaining a sense of order throughout the
entire event. The entire area that was employed for the event was sub-
divided into different stations.

1. Reception or Waiting/Holding Section
2. Testing Section
3. Evaluation Section
4. Presentation & QA section
The holding section was that area that was cordoned of for the sole
purpose of providing a seating area for the applicants where they could
await their turn for the test; fill up their application forms etc. For the benefit
of the applicants, a presentation providing information on WMI, WSES and
their respective areas of interest was prepared and played as a continuous
loop throughout the event at the holding section.
A select group of experienced individuals were responsible for preparing
the mandatory test for all the applicants. The format of the test was decidedafter taking into account the views of the managers and the WSES HR team.
An objective based, 20-minute questionnaire that tested the applicant’s
engineering, drafting and aptitude was drafted and approved by the
concerned authorities. The testing section was the area reserved for the
conducting of the aforementioned test. The test itself was conducted in
manageable batches that helped in better management of the area and
improved monitoring of the test.
The evaluation section was an area that was kept off-bounds for the
applicants as the correction and evaluation of the test papers was performedhere. A select five volunteers were handpicked to be the evaluators of the
test. As the tests were completed in batches, so was the correction of the
papers resulting in lesser waiting time for the applicants, eagerly and
nervously, awaiting their results.
Snacks and lunch counter were set up where refreshments were provided
to all the applicants during the course of the event at no extra cost. Select
volunteers were responsible for dispensing of the food items and in
maintaining the cleanliness of the area and its surroundings.
Another section was reserved for the presentation of a detailed and
informative session where Mr. Hari held the presentation on WM for the
applicants, to show them a glimpse of what they would be part of, if they
were successful in their application. Any doubts and questions the applicants
had regarding WMI and their interests were clarified and/or answered.

The applicants who cleared the testing round were short-listed for the
next step – the personal interview, by the managers and the WSES HR. The
results were announced to the applicants and those who were short-listed
were called for the decisive final round – the personal interview. The
personal interviews were conducted within the WSES office. This interview
with the respective managers of the various sub-divisions at WSES was the
final hurdle for the applicants. After all the interviews were concluded, the
applicants were asked to leave and await their results within a short span of
time. The managers and the HR team then brainstormed about the best
possible choice for their respective teams as well as WSES, and had another
round of interviews with the prospective candidates to be absolutely certain
of their choice. This thorough filtering process yielded 17 candidates who
would add value to their respective teams.
The selected candidates are currently receiving training in Unigraphics®,
engineering basics and Weir products at WSES’s human resource and
training vendor - Concurrent Engineering Solutions Pvt. Ltd. They are also
being trained by the team leaders of the respective departments in handling
the day-to-day tasks and steadily building responsibility and accountability
towards the teams. Upon conclusion of the Graduate Engineering Trainee
Program, the candidates will be given a real-time live project to be
successfully completed with individual responsibility. This project will be
showcased in an exhibition cum induction that will be organized at WSES.
In conclusion, the Graduate Engineering Trainee Program / RecruitmentDrive of 2011 was a highly successful mega event organized by the WSES
core team, at the end of which 17 accomplished candidates will be inducted
into the WSES family. The entire event was planned and executed with
precision and panache. It was truly a red-letter day in the calendar of events
at WSES in 2011.
