The Thomas Nelson, Jr. Chapter held

its Regular Meeting at a new venue, Fiorello’s Restaurant at the Holiday Inn & Suites in Newport News. President Joe Shipes called the meeting to order at 7:00pm. After the Invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance, and SAR Pledge, members introduced themselves, their guests, and remarked on their Patriot Ancestors. The Chapter had the honor of inducting Compatriot James Norton and warmly welcomed him into the Society.

Our Guest Speaker, Williamsburg author and Historian Tony Williams, gave a lively and informative presentation on the Courage, Perseverance, and Virtue of the Founding. The Chapter was presented VASSAR awards, in the form of Streamers, for 2010 for History Day Support and Chapter Excellence. After Officer and Committee Reports, the meeting closed with the SAR Recessional and Benediction.

John Glover

The man Washington described as a “tough little terrier” remains one of the forgotten heroes of the Revolution. John Glover was born in 1732 in Salem, MA. At 21, Glover moved to the fishing community of Marblehead. There he began to save his money until he had enough to buy a small ship. As the captain of a merchant vessel, he earned enough to purchase more ships. In the years that led to the Revolution, Glover was active in the patriot cause. He formed a militia unit to oppose any British invasion. In addition to his militia unit, Glover offered his ships to the war. The Hannah, the first ship to sail in the service of the new United States, was Glover’s own schooner. During the long siege of Boston, the Hannah sailed the waters around Boston Harbor and harassed British transport ships. Glover was so successful that asked Glover to outfit two more ships and form what came to be known as “Washington’s Navy.” When the need for a well-trained crew of seamen arose after the defeat at Long Island, Washington immediately called Gl

Glover. That heroic effort was just the first of several events in late 1776 that made Glover one of Washington's most valuable officers. The event that made him most famous, however, occurred in December. One well-known image of the war is that of Washington crossing the icy Delaware River on December 30, 1776. Washington and his force crossed the river to surprise the Hessian troops camped at Trenton, NJ. Glover and his men were at the oars and the poles of the boats that carried Washington across the river. Once on land, the Men of Marblehead fought to defeat the Hessians. They then carried 900 captured prisoners back across the Delaware to the patriot prison camp. After the victory, Washington promoted Glover to general for his part in the battle. Glover died in 1798, a year before Washington.

VA Hospital, Hampton, Building 148 July 4th, 2011, 7:00pm *Still Need Help*

Meet at the Domiciliary at 6:30pm to set up for the games and refreshments. Bingo starts at 7:00pm and plays for one hour or until our money ($50) is gone, whichever comes first. We clean up and leave by 8:15pm. To do a respectable job takes a minimum crew of four, but the more volunteers, the higher our Stark score. If you can arrive earlier and/or stay later to visit with the long-term patients in Bldg. 146, that’s even better!

Recent Events, Etc. Activities since our last meeting

On April 20, Compatriot Walter Neville, his wife Lorene, and President Joe Shipes visited

Reverend William Livingston in his residence at Warwick Forest. Mrs. Livingston (Sarah) and Bill's daughter, Sally Brown, were present. Dr. Livingston was presented with a Certificate of

Appreciation for his service to the Society and to the Community.

President Joe Shipes (3rd from l.) represented the Thomas Nelson, Jr. Chapter at the James

Monroe Birthplace ceremonies in Westmoreland County on April 30th. In center is VASSAR

President Mark Brennan.

Vice-President Ken Wood presented the Chapter wreath at the 230th Anniversary of the Battle of

Guilford Courthouse on March 12th in Greensboro, NC.

In commemoration of the 235th Anniversary of the Halifax Resolves, Vice-President Ken Wood

attended ceremonies on April 12th in Halifax, NC.

New Officers of the Moore House Society, Children of the American Revolution were sworn in at the Yorktown Victory Monument on May 22nd. The ceremony followed a very informative meeting at the

Customs House in Yorktown. President Joe Shipes, Compatriot Jim Swords and his wife Christine were honored to be in attendance.

Dr. Corliss A. Tacosa Dr. Tacosa is a Visiting Assistant Professor/Lecturer at Old Dominion University with areas of expertise in Russian Politics, Intelligence, and Global Security. Previous positions held included teaching current Russian issues to American military officers at the Joint Forces Staff College, a Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science at Christopher Newport University, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Political Science at Thomas Nelson Community College. She is a recognized speaker on Russian issues in the Hampton Roads area and has taught specialized courses on Intelligence, Terrorism, Nuclear Weapons issues, and Black Sea Security issues to area organizations for retirees. She has also created, developed, and taught for Old Dominion University courses reflecting Intelligence issues, i.e. Espionage and Intelligence, Evolution of American Intelligence (1776-present), and Terrorism and Counterterrorism. Dr. Tacosa’s dissertation research was on the role of advanced technology on the acquiescence of the nuclear weapon states to sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. She has done field research in Russia and the former Soviet state of Georgia on politics, terrorism, and nuclear treaties, including an interview with former Soviet Foreign Minister and Georgian President Edward Shevardnadze. She has also published several articles and a book chapter on Russian issues and op-ed pieces in area newspapers.
