This month we welcome the return of Castle Management to Buena Vida. During

the past month we've been working closely with them to make this transition as

smooth as possible. As we announced earlier, our entire staff is remaining at Buena

Vida so the staff we're accustomed to will still be here taking care of our great

community.

Shortly, you will receive communication from Castle, which will include your NEW

Account Number, our new lockbox address and instructions for all payment options.

For those of you currently on ACH Payments (recommended) you will need to

re-enroll for this feature, and if you make automatic payments directly from your

bank, you will need to change the mailing address for those payments to our new

Lock Box.

Our Painting Committee has presented their recommendations to the Board and the

community. Thanks to their hard work and diligence, the cost for painting our

homes will remain very close to what it was 7-8 years ago. The Board will consider

their recommendation at the meeting on June 12th at 7pm in the Ballroom.

Many of our residents will be travelling on vacation this summer and we hope you

will bring back pictures and great stories to share with your friends and neighbors

when you return. Safe travels to all.

For those of us staying home for the summer, please join us for our July 4th Party and

watch for those emails announcing our Cabaret series and other activities planned

for this summer. You can also enjoy our Dining Pavilion when the temperatures

start to climb.

MESSAGE FROM THE gatehouse

By: John Brandofino Recently there have been some new unfamiliar faces at the Gatehouse. Unfortunately

from time to time we experience turnover of new SOS Security employees. Please be

patient and understanding as they are new to this site and also unfamiliar with the

Buena Vida residents, guests, visitors, vendors and contractors. In order for the

Gatehouse staff to perform their job properly, all individuals entering the property on

the guest / visitor side entrance are required to present valid photo government

identification. Buena Vida residents may use their Buena Vida I.D. card provided it

has a photo. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated. Happy Father’s

Day to all the terrific Dads in our community.

Trivia News

By: Marsha Feldman

Who Knew...No One Knew!

Trivia on May 4 was fun, thought-provoking and difficult, but the snacks were great!

Six teams tried their best, but the final scores did not reflect the hard mental work in-

volved. Here are some of the questions which gave the players the most trouble.

Under the category of Inventions, the question was “What is the only patented uni-

form in the US?”

Fans of horror movies were the target of the halftime question, “Name the 6 horror

movies to ever have been nominated for an Oscar Best Picture award?” One team

guessed 4 of the 6 films while all others struggled to guess even one! The trick was to

choose from past films and present ones, too.

“What has a heart, but no other organs?” was a perplexing Riddle question. Most

teams went for the vegetarian answer, and Nicole allowed it! Her answer was a sur-

prise to all.

The last question before the Final was troublesome as well. “What was the first sport

that women were allowed to compete in during the Olympics?” A big fat zero was

registered for each team.

Understandably off their game, everyone missed the answer to the final question (the

question didn’t help either!), “Name each of the 7 Chakras?” The evening’s winning

team won by wagering zero, as all others bet 20 and lost their points! How’s that for

strategy? Congratulations to Team Friday Friends for their 1st place finish!

The next Friday Trivia will begin

at 7PM, in the Ballroom on June

Movies & more - “Tully”

By: Bruce Maltzman

When I first thought about reviewing this movie about post-partum depression, I asked Sue if she thought it was a good idea. After all, I do have a sensitive side despite the fact that all things Nicholas Sparks are forbidden in this house. After her laughing/near hysteria subsided, I admittedly felt that the gauntlet had been thrown at my feet. So here goes………

Academy award winning writer Diablo Cody (Juno) has written a thought provoking film about the difficulty of giving birth in the midst of chaos. Post birth chaos becomes magnified tenfold with the additional responsibilities of being a new mom as Marlo (Cherlize Theron) attempts to juggle the lives of her two other children (one autistic) and one video obsessed father. Marlo becomes overwhelmed with the circumstances and turns for help to a night nanny at the suggestion and generosity of her wealthy and perhaps a bit too smug brother.

When Tully (Mackenzie Davis) first appears, she seems a little odd, but her nanny talents more than offset any quirkiness. In fact, with Tully’s assistance in comforting the new baby as well as her expertise in baking cupcakes for an entire class, Marlo assumes Super-mom status clicking on all cylinders.

The film can actually be broken up into two parts, the pre-Tully segment and the Tully segment. The first part of the film is extremely tedious as we follow Marlo through all the trials and tribulations of an expectant mom trying to deal with other family issues besides the major issue of the imminent birth. This part of the movie moved painfully slow and could have been cut significantly, further eating into a film that is only 94 minutes in its present form.

From the moment that Tully appears at the door, the film improves drastically. The interplay of the characters is fascinating, even uncomfortable at times. It almost seems that Tully is a younger free spirited Marlo who has been lost under the burden of familyhood.

For a while things go exceedingly well; and then out of the clear blue, Tully announces that she has to leave. Marlo is devastated, and they agree to do one night on the town as their farewell to each other. Of course there is too much drinking, and then the accident.

It would not be fair to tell you anymore except that the ending has a major twist that I found tremendously satisfying. Had the first part of this movie been shortened and the scenes with Marlo and Tully extended, an adequate movie could have been a pretty good movie. The acting was very good and the direction by Academy Award nominee Jason Reitman was also very solid.

Overall, I must admit that I did enjoy Tully. The next thing you know, I am going to start watching the Hallmark channel! Have a great summer!

Hadassah highlights

By: Dee Klein

Our meeting in May was fun for everyone. We learned new Israeli dances and cele-

brated the 70th Birthday of Israel. Photos of this event will be in the next newsletter.

There will be no regular Hadassah Meeting or Book Club Meeting during June, July

or August.

We do, though , have a few special programs planned for July and August. Please

mark your calendars and plan to join us for the following events--

Men’s club

By: John Barletta & Dennis Hart

The BV Men’s Club began its May 6th breakfast by welcoming about 70 attendees in the

Buena Vida ballroom. President Dennis Hart announced that Men’s Club member and

resident Chef Irwin Wolf will be performing his culinary arts and cook a special hot

breakfast for our members at our June 10th breakfast meeting. In addition, Irwin will be

our guest speaker and lead us in our annual Trivia contest. Dennis also wished all

moms a Happy Mothers’ Day on May 13th.

Our guest speakers were members of the Volunteers Against Scams Team (VAST)

from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, whose role is educating the public

against scam and identity theft. Herb Rind began the presentation by letting us know

the team was established several years ago by the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office to help

the Sheriff’s Office to follow up on all scam and identity theft cases reported.

Unfortunately, Palm Beach County has led the State five years in a row in scam and

identity theft cases and VAST follows up on all reported cases. Herb provided us

with 2 examples of the latest scams. One involved women having their wallets

removed from their handbags while they were busy choosing their lottery numbers.

The thief would use the credit cards before the woman realized her wallet was stolen.

In another scam, you receive a phone call from someone posing as a bank

representative who offers to come to your home to provide you with a new bank card.

The person is well dressed, has an envelope with new cards and asks for your old card

and PIN. The person would then proceed to an ATM and withdraw cash.

Our next speaker was Laurie Wolf and Laurie provided us with information on

financial crimes and telephone scams. Laurie reminded us our new Medicare cards are

coming in the mail and to be aware of anyone calling to say they are sending out the

new cards and need us to provide us with our current Medicare Card number which is

our social security number. The new cards will no longer contain our social security

numbers. Laurie also advised us to use our Bank Cards as credit cards instead of debit

cards and not to reply to emails if we do not know the sender, especially if they ask to

click on a link they have included.

A very special thanks to VAST for taking their time to present us with a wealth of

knowledge on how to protect ourselves from scams and identity theft.

Our two raffle winners were Jules Nettis and Ed Leefer.

Our next Men’s Club Breakfast meeting is Sunday, June 10th at 10:00 AM in the

ballroom.

The next Men’s Club Lunch Bunch will be June 18th at Rollatini’s.

We are always looking for fresh ideas, interesting programs, as well as new

members, so please spread the word.

Women’s Club

By: Sharon Burgess-Hackett and Robyn Spigler

The Buena Vida Women’s Club, with some of the club’s spouses and friends, took a

wonderful cruise on the Lady Delray, Thursday, May 10th. A shining bright sun

surrounded us even though some of us might have felt uncomfortable by the heat of

the day. While entering the vessel, which provided protection from the elements, we

finally were able to feel comfort from the breeze emanating from the waterway. Upon

our embarking, many of the women were noticed to be “decked out” in their sun hats,

boat shoes and yacht clothes to cruise along the intracoastal waters.

Upon speaking with us briefly as we settled down with our “cool drinks”, the tour

captain offered us a fabulous tour of the multi-million dollar homes that lined the

Intracoastal waters. Each property was unique, whether it was a mansion or high-rise

building. The captain pointed out that a home had been raised in order for the owners

to build a $4 million play area for their children on the adjacent property. Given the

homes on the waterway were massive, the yachts were equally impressive also. One

in particular was noted to accommodate as many as 100 people. That must be quite a

private water party! It was pointed out that many of these homes are seasonal and

some are used less than a couple of weeks a year. As we visualized the beautiful

surroundings, the 20 men and women were in awe during the two-hour presentation.

Many of us thought that it was not that much different than our Buena Vida!

Stimulated by the cruise, many of us left to go and partake of the shopping and the

restaurants that the quaint town had to offer. It was quite evident that all had a fun

time.

The BVWC would like to welcome to its board Arlene Klein and Dee Klein.

The Buena Vida Women’s Club Board is still looking for volunteers, either to be on the

Board itself or to assist at our in-house meetings. Should you be interested, please

contact Robyn at [email protected] or 561-660-5933. In line with this, should you have

ideas for events, please contact us so that we may investigate them further.

Christian Heritage Club

By: Jane Giannattasio

Every month we try to bring new and exciting events to our members, but the merry

month of May has to be noted for several reasons.

After recovering from the abundance of food at Peggy and Lloyd Rice’s barbecue at

their home on April 29 it was time to shift gears for our next get-together.

May 5 the Kentucky Derby was right here in Buena Vida, complete with Kentucky

bourbon, our “horses” and real wagering. Lunch in the Ballroom was followed by the

reason we came: we placed our bets, and with a quick toss of the dice we watched the

“ponies run”. We played seven games. It was hard to find a more exciting event.

On Sunday, June 10, our members are planning a pool party at the Buena Vida pool. It

will include food, fun, friends and fellowship.

CHC member and Buena Vida resident, Chet McCarthy, received the “Captain of the

Year Award” from Sheriff Ric L. Bradshaw at the PBSO Annual Awards Luncheon on

April 18. Chet is Captain of the Volunteer Emergency Response Team. VERT is a vol-

unteer unit of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Dept. Chet describes it: “There are

twenty members in the unit. We are on call 24/7. We get called out for POTUS Escort

Detail assignments by the Secret Service. The PBSO calls us out for traffic fatalities,

floods, gas leaks, major power outages, etc. When we arrive on the scene we relieve the

deputies, set up road blocks and control traffic.”

Chet, your fellow CHC members and all of Buena Vida thanks you for your dedication

and hard work.

(Thanks to Dorothy Moore for her assistance.)

Musings From The Bald Wimp

“Another Look at Training” (Part 3 of 5)

By: Neil Goldman Hello Buena Vidans:

In the first two articles in this series, two key points were stated:

1. – USE THE BODY THE WAY IT WAS DESIGNED

2 – EXERCISE MACHINES PREDOMINANTLY CREATE STRENGTH IN LIMITED

MUSCLES

In order to get the best payback for our investment of time and energy while training,

our program must include a well rounded approach regarding the usage and stressing

of our musculature. Last month we reviewed the SEATED LEG PRESS, SEATED LEG

CURL and SEATED LEG EXTENSION and in each case strength could be created in

the specific muscles for each machine. It was also noted that each of the actions

performed on each machine do not reflect the way we would actually use our body.

The most natural movement for our bodies is to walk. EVERY muscle in your lower

body is stressed when walking. In addition, the core muscles and upper back muscles

must be stimulated to maintain proper postural alignment and balance as we move.

Plagiarizing from this natural movement, a program that includes squats, lunges and

forward folds (dead lifts) uses the body’s natural coordination of these muscles in

order to perform these movements. Of course there are many modifications to these

types of movements but most importantly, it is the form when doing these movements

that is paramount.

As most of my students have heard: 1. HEAD UP 2. SHOULDERS BACK 3. TUMMY

TIGHT

If these simple rules are followed you will have the proper alignment of your spine,

your knees and that all important slight arch of the lower back as you move the way

you were built. You will maintain the muscular coordination to sustain balance and

use all of your muscles simultaneously at the level that each muscle was designed to be

used. A 1,000 pound leg press with strong quadriceps is useless if you can’t bend down

to pick up your grandchild. Ergo, do calisthenics with the appropriate resistance in co-

ordination with your strength building machines.

Next month we will look at the upper body machines.
