Dear Friends,
Most of our six Churches will be celebrating Harvest this month. We will enjoy Harvest suppers and give thanks for the fact that we have so much to eat. For once again, today, our country is a ‘green and pleasant land’ and it is easy to forget how yellow and dry it became earlier in the summer. Then, parts of our country had big problems with wild-fires that took a lot of putting out and that wrecked landscapes. Yet they were relatively minor compared with similar fires in California and Australia. Also as I write Tropical Storm Florence and Typhoon Mangkhut are battering the eastern coast of the United States and the Philippines respectively. And there are regular stories about the polar ice caps shrinking.
Now I am no expert, either about weather or about the history of such events (how frequent they have been in the past) but it does seem to me - even allowing for that fact that we hear much more about such events because of the ease of modern communication - that there is a pattern here. And given that a large part of the scientific community seems to believe that these events are related to human activity there is a strong case for saying that this is the global warming that is due to the CO2 that we produce by the way we generate and use energy.
We all know we should use our cars less and not leave our devices on stand by’ or ‘hibernate’ so much, etc. and we need to get better at doing those things. But this is a global problem and as such requires global solutions. Resolving it will need both new technology and political will from the leaders of the nations. In turn that probably means more of us putting more pressure on our elected politicians to encourage them to take action even if it is costly or unpopular. So as well as doing what we can individually to reduce our use of energy, we need to overcome our own inertia and encourage our leaders to overcome theirs. Otherwise the future of our harvests will be in doubt and we will have wasted the beautiful gift God gave us of this planet.

NEWS FROM THE PEWS!
The pattern of our church services generally follows
the church year with appropriate forms of worship
for the different seasons - advent, lent etc. We also
try to fit in some special services to celebrate two
important ceremonies that take place in church -
weddings and baptisms. Couples that have been married over the last
few years at Barford are invited to attend the marriage celebration and
there is a special moment in the service where all husbands and wives
present have an opportunity to renew their vows. Similarly, youngsters
who have been Christened in the church (and their parents!) are also
invited to attend the baptism celebration service.
Of course there is one other important ceremony that often takes place
in church and that is the funeral service. For close family and friends
this can sometimes pass by in a bit of a blur as they deal with their grief
and all the practical aspects of someone dying. We therefore hold
another special service each year to Commemorate the Departed.
This year it will take place on Sunday 4th November at 3:30pm in St.
Peter’s Church. It will be an occasion where we can remember our
loved ones who have died before God and give thanks for them. We
always read a list of names of those that people wish to have specially
remembered. If you want us to remember a particular person in that
way please e-mail Revd David Jessett ([email protected]) or
write to The Rectory, Church Lane, Barford, Warwick CV35 8ES. Please
PRINT the names. Note that there will be a similar service on the same
day in St Peter ad Vincula Church, Hampton Lucy at 6.00 pm
We are collecting as usual during the
Harvest season for the Salvation Army’s
Way Ahead project. Please see list in
church of the goods most urgently
required. They will be collected regularly.
Thank you.
Autumn Courses: A series of evening meetings will start on Monday,
8th October at 19 Dugard Place and Tuesday, 9th October at River
Keeper’s Cottage, Hampton Lucy, both starting at 7.45 p.m. The
theme is “Women in the Bible: their significance and influence”. For
more information, please contact Ann on 624371.

RECENT EVENTS
A huge thank you to all those who organised or who came along to support the Mini-Scarecrow Hunt on Monday August 27th. It was wonderful to see so many families and children putting their detective skills to work in the churchyard and on King George’s Field. There were 32 wild and wacky scarecrows and several people managed to find them all! A total of £705 was raised towards church funds.
The Jazz Concert on September 8th was well supported and we once again enjoyed a varied set of New Orleans jazz classics from the Coventry based Tierra Buena band. Thanks to those who made the arrangements and provided refreshments. £458 was raised
for church funds.

Regular Reports
St. Peter’s Club – The club meetings have now resumed after the
summer break. They continue to follow the same format, starting with
tea at 4.30pm for which there is no charge.
This is followed by stories, art work, puzzles and singing. Any child
who is at Primary School is most welcome. There is no requirement for
them or their families to be church members. Our aim is to explain the
Christian faith so that the children will have enough knowledge to
make important decisions in the future. The meetings close at 6.30pm.
For more information or to book a tea please contact Ann on 624371
Ladies Guild – Meetings of the Ladies Guild take place on the third
Wednesday of each month, usually at 10.30am. For more detailed
information please contact Ann on 624371. Anyone who is free at this
time is most welcome, why not come to a meeting and meet this
friendly group? Our meetings in the coming months are varied, from
trips out to coffee mornings to planning charity events. We meet
usually in members homes and the morning always involves coffee and
cake or biscuits and a lot of lively chatter.
Reminders and Forthcoming Events:
The next Lunch Club will be on Monday 22nd
October at 1:00pm in the Memorial Hall. All welcome.
If you wish to join, please phone 624371.
Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal: The House To
House Collections will start on Saturday 27th October
and finish on Saturday 10th November. If you would be
able to help with the collection in this very special year,
please call Ann on 624371. Many thanks.
The church is open every day during daylight hours.
On Saturdays between 10:00 and 12:00 refreshments are
available.
HARVEST DECORATING

Operation Christmas Child – Shoe Box collection
The collection times for Shoe Box donations will be weekdays from 1st to 18th November from 1.00 to 4.00pm, and volunteers to man the Church during this time to receive the boxes would be much appreciated. Leaflets giving helpful advice about what contents are recommended and allowed are now in the Village Shop and the Church. Please do not include any liquids, war toys, sharp objects or books with words in them. Ideally, each box should have a woolly hat, gloves, stationery, a cuddly toy as well as toys such as cars, balls, skipping ropes and sweets but not chocolate. Empty boxes to be filled can be obtained from Church on Saturday mornings during October between 10.00 and 12.00 or you could cover your own box as before.
Most of the boxes from this area go to the Middle East and the Refugee camps and the pleasure gained by the children who receive the gifts is heart-warming. Christine McBeath (624485)

Back to School!
At the end of the summer term the
children had all taken part in an
amazing ‘end of school year’
concert. Each class sang a song
chosen from their favourite
musical; it was extremely
entertaining! Well done pupils of
Barford School.
The pupils returned to school in
September, full of enthusiasm for
learning and glad to be reunited
with their friends after the summer
holidays. During assembly on the
first morning back, they all looked
very smart in their new uniforms,
stylish haircuts and shiny shoes.
Some pupils read out the post-
cards they had sent from various
places they had visited on holiday.
Reception class were individually
introduced to the rest of the
school before they returned to
their classroom to formally start
their education. They had already
attended some reading sessions in
school in the summer term so they
have become familiar with the
school routine and the older pupils
are always helpful in guiding them
through the first and somewhat
scary days of 'Big School'.
The whole school topic this half
term is 'Barford and Beyond’ and
we will be finding out as much as
possible about the village in the
past. We will be asking residents
who used to attend Barford
School, when it was on the nursery
site, to come and talk to us about
what education was like in the
past. ‘How different was it when
the pupils had to visit the toilets
outside in the cold and had to go
home for lunch?’ Most of the
pupils walked to school even from
neighbouring villages and on
sunny summer days pupils went
for nature walks over Sadler's
Fields. We are very excited about
the project and are looking
forward to gathering stories from
past pupils. The project will
conclude with an exhibition in the
school hall.
Best wishes from staff and pupils

WCC MINERALS PLAN – This went to WCC Cabinet on Tuesday July 24th where a modified version of the plan – excluding Site 5 Glebe Farm and also the Salford Priors site – was approved for further consideration and was subsequently approved by full council. This will now come out for a further round of consultation as the “Publication Plan” in September/October when ONLY the “legality and soundness” of the proposals will be considered before the plan goes for “submission” next Spring and then “Examination in Public” next Summer. The Inspector will then be expected to report on the plan in Autumn/Winter 2019 with the plan to be adopted in Spring 2020.
UPDATE: Apparently, due to staffing issues there may be some further delays in the above timetable – more news as we know it.
NB: This is not the final approval as this is only a “Land Allocation Plan”, identifying areas where minerals might be expected to be extracted. Before any site can be developed there must follow a Full Planning Permission process when terms and conditions of any actual “permission” will be agreed. In the event of an actual Planning Application coming forward it will be important that as many residents as possible muster their efforts to ensure
that the strictest conditions are imposed to control any adverse effects of such an application and to protect our communities from dust, noise and traffic in addition to limiting wider environmental damage.
At the September JPC we received an update from the Sand And Gravel Action Group detailing their activities to date and their proposals to continue to fight the cause into the future. We can expect more publicity and more liaison with nearby villages and schools along with direct approaches to our MP and St John’s College. A crowdfunding
campaign has also been launched to help fund the inevitable costs of specialist and legal support in challenging proposals (see pages 18/19)
KING GEORGE’S FIELD – The good weather largely continued and usage has been good and high – a great pleasure to see so many families enjoying our facilities. After a few clashes, parking in Church Lane seems to have settled leaving safe and easy access in most of Church Lane. Sadly a few regular users continue to exploit the far end of Church Lane and park fairly inconsiderately and irresponsibly over the pavements and blocking driveways to the properties behind the Glebe.
Joint Parish Council – Councillor Chatter! Commentary on activity related to our three parishes which may contain information, which has not yet passed before the full JPC, in which I believe electors may have an interest, all written from the perspective of the JPC, responsible to all three parishes.

What was once a quiet backwater – apart from lorries going to the Glebe – can now be quite busy with visitors having found the shortcut through the cemetery. We are watching that area and considering what may be possible to minimise the inconvenience for all…
PLANNING APPLICATION – Sheltered bungalows in Church Lane – The Listed Building Consent application has been approved by WDC as the proposal was not deemed by WDC Conservation Officers to have an adverse impact on the Listed Building. This now has to be followed by a Full Planning Application to determine whether these bungalows can be built on this site. The JPC will be considering this at its meeting on October 1st and if you wish to view the plans, and/or comment, the application number is W/18/1174, available at
https:planningdocuments.warwickdc.gov.uk/online-applications/
GYPSIES AND TRAVELLERS- Risks at Sherbourne – Recent encampments in the local area raised awareness for us again – particularly the relatively open land adjacent to the Sherbourne Roundabout which has suffered over the last year or two. Hardening of the site with soil mounds, extra fencing and large trailers seems to have paid off this time and no encampment arrived. There is good news from Highways England who actually own and control the site in that they have confirmed proposals to fence/enclose the farm track/Public Footpath through the site to further hinder any access onto the open parts of the site. Work is expected to be undertaken in November.
Next scheduled JPC meeting Monday October 8th 2018 at Sherbourne Village Hall 7.30pm - there is a session for “Public Participation” early in the agenda (4 minutes maximum per person) when we are happy to hear and note your concerns or questions. Alternatively, you may submit “your views” to [email protected] or email myself (see above) or the Chairman, Tony Merrygold, on 624295 or 07802455217 or [email protected] or the Clerk, James Johnson at [email protected] or contact any of the Parish Councillors about any matters you wish to bring to our attention.
John Murphy Vice-Chairman JPC - Tel 624421, 07710 033444 or email [email protected]
A very big thank you to all those who have sent cards and kind wishes to Michael for his speedy recovery. Michael and all the family are most grateful.

Youth and Community Project We now have a target of £300,000 for the new building. Everything is in place except the money – we desperately need help in applying for grants to meet our planned date (Summer 2019). If anyone has experience in this – or can just offer help with bid writing please get in touch. We are able to apply to local Charities to get started but the major funding will have to come from National Charities and there is a lot of competition for this money so we need to get the application right.

NOVEMBER CONCERT AT LOXLEY - Not to be missed!
The final concert in our series for 2018 will be at St. Nicholas' Church Loxley on Sunday 4th November at 3.00pm and will be given by Romany Pie, a folk group from Kenilworth who will be performing their anthology of songs, poems and readings to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.
John, Dave and Matthew have been together as a folk group for many decades and are joined for this show by reader Chris Carpenter from Kenilworth's Talisman Theatre. Featuring poems and letters from the trenches as well as more modern pieces, the anthology also offers folk songs reflecting on all aspects of life on the front line. The show is suitable for all ages and will last for 50 minutes. Admission is free with a retiring collection in aid of the Church Fabric Fund. We do hope that you will be able to join us on this very special occasion.

At the September meeting four Warwickshire Federation trustees arrived to discuss the ‘health’ of Barford WI. They included Lynn Stubbings, a member of Wishaw WI and the NATIONAL CHAIRMAN!
There was some lively discussion and various ideas were put forward to help to increase membership and to raise the profile of the WI in Barford. It was an interesting and thought provoking meeting.
At the October meeting on Thursday 4th, the advertised speaker is unable to attend so Clare Sawdon, who is currently the High Sheriff of Warwickshire, will be coming to talk about her work as a magistrate. The meeting starts at 7.45 pm in the Memorial Hall, Church Street.
Visitors are always welcome and we are a friendly bunch If you would like to try us out and do not want to walk in on your own, just give me a call.

STOP THE QUARRY AT BARFORD
For further information, please contact the Sand and Gravel Action Group (working on behalf of Barford, Wasperton and Sherbourne)
Barbara Moore 01926 620021
Malcolm Eykyn 01926 624772
THE VILLAGES OF BARFORD, WELLESBOURNE, CHARLECOTE, WASPERTON, SHERBOURNE & HAMPTON LUCY WILL ALL BE
SEVERELY AND IRREVERSIBLY DAMAGED. WE MUST JOIN TOGETHER TO STOP THE QUARRY.
Contrary to popular belief, no final decision has been made yet.
This is a live issue and we have everything to fight for but we must act very quickly to make a difference.
This is our FINAL chance to oppose the quarry before a potential public enquiry next year.
Quarry Key Points:
Situated on the A429 between Barford and Charlecote, the site is one and a half times the size of Barford. The quarry will be a massive 220 acre eyesore.
Plurality October 2018
19
Quarry dust will be released into our environment and spread by the lorries.
Quarry dust causes Silicosis, a serious lung disease that can kill. The A429 will be blocked by 60 extra lorries per day, plus slow water-
spraying trucks to try to dampen down the dust. It is likely that quarry lorries will use the Wellesbourne roundabout as a
turning point for the M40. Congestion will impact businesses and villagers.
The quarry will be operational for 14 years, maybe longer. Our beautiful green fields, environment and heritage will be destroyed. This land will never be restored to its current agricultural value. It is
likely that the land will then be used for rubbish tips, then housing.
In addition to reports already submitted to WCC, we need to fund input from Mineral Planning experts, plus a barrister to fight on our behalf. PLEASE donate in the following ways:

from residents. Ideas for a new magazine name have now been
whittled down to a shortlist and a final decision on this will be
announced next month.
The new magazine will contain all the usual details of events and news
from village organisations and we hope to have plenty of room for
other articles of interest. It will be printed in full colour so we will be
encouraging contributors to send us more images
and photos to make the content lively and engaging
for readers.
If you have further suggestions or items that you
think may be of interest, please get in touch with
the editors using the contact details inside the front cover.

Anyone for Coffee?
This month’s Coffee Morning is in the Village Hall from 10.30 until 12.30 on Thursday 11th October.
Did you know?
A small fact, probably not well known, about the spire of All Saints’: Gilbert Scott was commissioned to design the Church at the time that he was working on Salisbury Cathedral to stabilise its then swaying spire, which at 450 feet, is the tallest in England. The design of the spire of All Saints’ is based on that of the Cathedral but it is only 150 feet tall.

St John the Baptist Churchyard - Wildlife Update!
There is often about this time a spell of fine, dry weather This has received the name of St Luke’s little summer.
An Indian summer can occur in October or November.
This is one of the famous English weather sayings and is much believed by country folk but the figures tell a different story. The 18th of October is St Luke’s day and in tests for dry sunny weather the period from the 15th to 21st gave a 31 % chance of this happening. A 31 % chance is not too bad. We must wait and see.

Wildlife Update - continued
Overall how has the lovely summer suited our Churchyard? Well the first thing was that we didn’t have to cut the grass for seven weeks. We had a very happy team of mowers! The birds seemed to have managed well, especially the tits. They feed their young on caterpillars mostly, which must have been about given the number of leaves with holes. Not so many blackbirds though; they need worms and the ground was dry and hard. We’ve had lots of insects, flies, bees and latterly wasps. The flies have fed our house martins and a few swallows. No swifts I’m sad to say. The bats have loved this warm weather, I’m sure; we still have plenty.
Back to normal now with the cooler nights so I must make sure the bug boxes are restored. The birds have been pecking the stick tubes out. Getting bugs out? Who knows? Soon it will be bed time for hedgehogs and we have the “bed room” ready hidden away for them. Autumn is here and winter soon; get your woollies on and keep warm. Thanks for your interest and support.

Wellesbourne and District Lions
Club News
It can’t be possible!! It is!! Lions are preparing for our Christmas floats. Sleighs are starting to be built, Santa is sorting out gifts for the children in our district and some of us are trying to work out the timetable, taking account of all the new homes that have been built in the area. This year we will be out and about from Wednesday 5th December until Wednesday 19th December. We are hoping to publish full details of where we will be each evening, in next month’s news.
Lions will be holding a bucket collection at Sainsburys in Wellesbourne on Saturday 20th and
Sunday 21st October. Please come and say hello to us and if you can spare a bit of loose change then that would be great. All monies raised will be used to support local charities, local organisations or local people needing our help.
I would like to take this opportunity to make you all aware of a service that we offer at Lions. We have a number of wheelchairs available to borrow. If anybody in the community is in urgent need of a wheelchair then please contact Lion Paul Gibson on 01789 841730 to discuss your requirements.
