Future of Learning and Development in 10 years time in …..
But what are we talking about here?
Private sector?
Social housing sector?
Not for profit sector?
Public sector?
We must mean
social housing surely!
But does it matter?
Let’s assume it is 2020 ………
What will our society be
like?
What will have changed?
What will the social
Housing sector look
and feel like?
Will there be a sector?
Question for you
What do you think
are the top 3 things
that will change in
our society by
2020?
Let’s assume it is 2020 ………
Orbit needed a new vision because
doing nothing is not an option.
Orbit commissioned six of the country’s leading experts to tell us
how they thought the world would look in the year 2020.
Why?
We face the most radical changes
to our operating environment
for decades.
A long-term housing crisis sees current
demand for new homes at 250,000 a year
against delivery of just 110,000.
We must therefore evolve our
business to ensure that we can
continue to help people access
high-quality, affordable homes,
create thriving communities and
enable people to achieve their
aspirations.
Let’s assume it is 2020 ………
Inequality will have got worse and we will
face challenges in finding new ways to
support, enable and encourage customers
to take control of their own lives and thrive
in the tough times ahead
The experts talked of a harsher world in 2020 where housing is in short
supply, inequality has increased and public funding has diminished
The housing crisis will be worse than it
is today with growing demand for homes
to rent and buy in the areas where we
work. People will find it harder to access
housing they can afford.
Government investment in housing
will not recover to historic levels and
we will need to respond to a housing
market which has changed
Let’s assume it is 2020 ………
Fuel poverty will increase and we will face
challenges in cutting carbon emissions
and enabling our residents to afford ever-
increasing fuel bills
Demand for our services will increase as
local authorities are forced to scale back
their activities; our role in communities in
2020 is likely to be broader and deeper
than it is today.
There will be a huge increase in internet
usage and mobile technology, people will
demand a greater say in what services
they access and how, as well as more
ethical corporate culture

What is the Orbit 2020 vision?
What could the Orbit 2020 vision
mean for the future of Learning and
Development in the Social Housing Sector?
Let’s look at two possibilities…..
Create the New World
Very little (more of the
same with a bit of change)
Possibility 1 … Very little
(more of the same with a bit of change)
Learning and Development in 2020 would look and feel roughly the
same with some changes at the edges - the traditional Social
Housing Sector response to change!
X Still basically inward looking
X L and D Strategy not directly
linked to business vision and
outcomes
X L and D training ‘output based’ not
‘outcome focussed’
X Traditional training approaches
remain the basic building blocks
X E learning widespread
X Mostly isolated – but some
sharing and consolidation
But …..
is this good enough given …..
Need to change our culture ……
What does ‘Commercial with a social purpose’ mean for our people?
Relentless focus on achieving results. . Targets will be met
and rewarded
Making a profit comes first in order for us to meet our
future aspirations. It is everyone’s responsibility.
Innovation is a natural part of what we do. It is at the heart of
our thinking and decision making
People work consistently to agreed outcomes and
frameworks underpinned by disciplined thought and action.
Performance management is a natural part of how we think and
what we do and directly linked to what we want to achieve in
our people, our services and our assets.
Profit

Innovation
& Change
Lean thinking is embedded in the approach of our people and
organisation
Calculated risks are taken and encouraged.

Need to change our culture ……
‘People first’. A core business principle is to maximise the
‘happiness’ of its people.
Close, formal partnerships with external providers are created and
maintained. Internal partnerships are strong, vibrant and lasting .
Orbit people are ‘facilitators’ that empower communities to take
responsibility; and customers to gain relevant skills, advising
on strategies, providing the link to Orbit and external services.
The organisation and its people continually look to improve through
the knowledge and experience of others, whether internal/external. Learning

Possibility 2 … Create the New World
How do we get the right people with the right skills
in 2020 given that….
Our culture is different…’Commercial with a social purpose’
Our leadership and management are different…transformational rather
than strategic or operational
Our people are different…facilitators of change and services
Our business is different…profit for a purpose with a relentless
focus on delivery
….through a different Leadership and Development approach
Possibility 2 … Create the New World
….through a different Leadership and Development approach
1. How will we ensure our
people have the right skills
for 2020?
Recruiting and developing the
‘Right people’ (Jim Collins): Housing professional qualifications
no longer relevant
Self motivated and self driven
Business minded and results driven
Innovator
Relationship builder
Facilitator
Socially driven
Recruiting and developing the
‘Right leaders’ (Jim Collins): Relentless focus on delivering results
Change managers
Able to conceive and create the future
Emotional intelligence
Coaches
Concept of ‘leadership’ and ‘leadership
development’ no longer relevant
Possibility 2 … Create the New World
….through a different Leadership and Development approach
2. What will the 2020
Leadership and Development
Strategy be like to develop our
leaders and people?
Not as we know it!
Bottom up not top down
Driven by the needs of individuals, not
the manager or organisation
No formal strategy – individual’s
responsibility to know business vision.
values, goals and results to be
achieved
Individual accountable for their own
development
Organisation to provide learning and
knowledge base for learning
Possibility 2 … Create the New World
4. How will the function be
resourced – people and
organisation?
….through a different Leadership and Development approach
3. What tools and services
will be provided?
Digital access for individuals through
variety of channels to development
tools and learning
Organisation provides ‘gateway’ into
internal and external information,
knowledge and assessment tools
Individual works in partnership with
the organisation to update knowledge
and development and create new areas
Expertise in digital technology and
E-learning
Learning and Development expertise
outsourced to external providers
Key messages from today
Individuals to take accountability
and responsibility for their own
knowledge and development
Look to the future
and start changing
Different expertise needed with
Learning and Development
resource outsourced
The ‘world is changing’
do not be left behind Do not bury your
head in old thinking
Learning and Development
needs to adapt and change
to meet the ‘new world’
Organisation to act as the
gateway to knowledge and tools
Recruit the right people
with the right skills and
right behaviours
