the fresh fashion c o m p e t i t i o nw h a t i s i t ?The Fresh Fashion Competition is a creativity competition for G.C.S.E students. It is based around fashion and fashion influences, and each year has a different fashion theme. The competition will result in a exhibition show cases the top 50 entries.

The competition has been designed to give young people a chance to show off their talents to the whole world, in-stead of just in school. There are no restrictions as to how adventurous and creative your ideas and creations are, so you can do whatever you like!

We are looking for really talented and creative young peo-ple to show off their ideas and skills who really want to get noticed.

The competition is purely about creative talent, there’s no writing or tests involved! It’s a fun thing to do, and even if you don’t win, its great to put in your portfolio for when you apply to university.

who is it for?The Fresh Fashion Competition is for 15-16 year olds study-ing G.C.S.E Textiles, Art or Photography.

The three subject areas are judged separately and will have separate areas in the exhibition. This is the perfect opportu-nity for you if you want to create something really exciting and ambitious but don’t have the opportunity at school.

why take part?The competition is widely known through top educational establishments, especially those who specialize in art and design subjects. When you come to apply for courses at colleges and Universities or 6th form, they will be pretty im-pressed if you’ve taken part in the competition and showed off your creative talents.

Its a great extra to add onto your application forms, portfo-lios or cv’s, and even just to impress your friends and family.

w h a t ‘ s in i t f o r y o u ?You might get your work exhibited in the Design museum, a top London gallery space. The top 50 entries will be dis-played in an excited and experiential exhibition. There will be prizes for the winners and runner up, including art sup-plies vouchers, passes to London exhibitions and cash priz-es.

By taking part you will get you work noticed by industry pro-fessionals as the judges for the competition are lecturers from Universities you may want to go to in the future, and top people in the fashion industry.

t h i s y e a r s t h e m e Each year the Fresh Fashion Competition has a new theme, this year the theme is GALAXY. Think all things space! Remember all entries must be fashion related, so it really helps to research into sci fi fashion and what designers and photographers are using this kind of theme for their designs.

Get in the galactic mood with these nail paints from Topshop, they could also be useful for some of your creations not just for your nails!

We love to see a mix of different medias in your designs, so how about painting over photographs or onto fabric with these glittery nail paints to add texture and decoration to your ideas.

Glitter can create a starry effect, so don’t be afraid to make your designs sparkle. It’s important your ideas fit in with the Galaxy theme, but you can use anything you like to create this effect.

We want to see where you got your ideas, so add things to a mood board as you go along. Take you ideas from everywhere, the internet is a great source, but getting out and about is always very inspirational as well. If some of your friends are taking part in the competition, get together and go on trips to find things to inspire you.

Any fashion product is accepted, so don’t hold back if you have thought of something we haven’t mentioned.

Use as many techniques as you like to show off your talent, you can do anything from knitting to sublimation!

With every entry, an A3 colour mood board is required to show how you got your ideas and the process you have taken to create it.

Use images,materiels, fabric, sequins.. Anything you have used to get to your idea!

i n s p i r a t i o nA great place to start looking for inspiration for your design is to look at the work by top designers. Here are some images which would help inspire you to create an exciting galaxy garment!

These dresses are from C h r i s t o p h e r K a n e ’ s collection in 2008, the huge sequins and sheer fabrics make the designs look very futuristic and unique.

These Christopher Kane for Resort in 2011 feature exciting galaxy prints. You could try to re-create this look using a sublimation p r i n t e r , s e w i n g s e q u i n s onto

The outfits are from Balenciaga’s A/W 12 collection, the sci fi prints and shiney fabrics are just the inspiration you need. See if you can get your hands on some shiney fabrics like these to create your garment or accessory.

photographyw h a t t o p h o t o g r a p hWe are looking for really creative and original ideas, so don’t be afraid to really show off. We want to see unusual photographs with a really unique feel to them, so its really good to do lots of research and think up some exciting ideas.

As the competition is fashion based, it is important is has a fashion photography look to it. You may want to use a friend to model in your photographs or ask about to see if you can find someone who would look just right in your images.

Remember to carefully consider what the model is wearing, as this could be the key to making your photography have a spacey theme.

find the rights e t t i n gYou can get really creative with your location for this project, some places might look more like the moon than you think!

If you’re looking for a location rather than studio, think about going to the beach or in a woodland. The each is a great place for this type of photoshoot because its such a blank canvas, and you can add props round the model as there is plenty of space. A woodland is another good place because they can look quite mysterious and magical, and adding things like shiny fabrics or glitter to the setting can give it a real spooky feeling.

If you’re more keen on a studio setting, this is great for close ups and images focusing purely on the model.

u s e y o u r s k i l l sIf you re particularly good at something or want

to try out something new then now is the time to show everyone what you can do! Taking as many

pictures as possibly and choosing from the best one is a good way to get the perfect photo.

Photo shop is really good programme you can use on computers to create special

effects, you can do almost anything you like! If you don’t know how to use it,

ask your teacher or some of the older students for some tips or lessons. On

our website we show you some easy thing to do to get the hang of it,

and you can post any questions on our Facebook page if you need

to know how to do something in particular. Google what

you want to do, and there is usually a step by step

guide or a video tutorial on Youtube.

put your picturest o p a p e rWith every entry, an A3 mood board should be submitted. It must show how you got your idea and the development behind the photograph. Fill it with images that have inspired your photoshoot, and include any other images you have taken that you feel are relevant.

i n s p i r a t i o nLocation is a really important factor to consider for your photoshoot, and there are more options than you think! Although there is a galaxy theme this doesn’t mean you have to jet off into space! Think about locations around here you live, and if you can make them seem a little more spooky and galactic Woodlands are a great place to consider, think about lights you could use, the time of day and angle you’re taking the photo. Beaches are great too, they are a plain canvas and so you can add props to the scenery or just use an empty space to give the illusion of being on the moon. A studio setting is great for portrait shots and close ups, if you do this, you could concentrate more on what the model is wearing and make up to get the spacey feel.

Think about any props you can use too, look in magazines for some space inspiration, and you might find images like this one (left) to inspire you. You could paint rocks with glitter paint to get a spacey effect, or using a dark studio area and a variety of lights to get an every feel. If you’re not confident on photoshop, you can do great effects by holding up coloured film paper in front of the lense, or making your own backdrop and props.

illustration to i n s t a l l a t i o nHere are some examples of A level work by Alice White, she has gone on to study Art and Art History at Kingston University, London. It demonstrates how her illustrations inspired by images from Vogue Magazine evolved into a 3D structure.

This is a great way to inspire yourself to create something impressive, start off by sketching ideas and looking at different colours and textures you can use with a variety of paints and pencils.

Illustrator Natalie Lines is a great inspiration to look at. Her work is a collage of different medias, brought together using photoshop. She uses both pencil illustrations, photographs, Images of crumpled paper and sketches of patterns and textured.You could have a go at collaging for your entry, use lots of different materiels, even sequins, shiney paper and glitter can give a good spacey effect!

Below is an image from the Alexander McQueen shows for Spring/Summer 1999, where a model stood between two robot arms which dramatically sprayed her pristine white dress with thick dark paints. McQueen’s work has always been exceptionally inspirational, and this is just another example. e x h i b i t o n Have you work exhibited at The Design Museum

www.designmuseum.orgThe exhibition will be held at the Design Museum in London. It’s a popular exhibition space for contemporary art and design, and has a variety of work on display. If you’ve never been to an exhibition before see if there is any on your local area you can visit, or have a trip down to London to see some of the best exhibition in the U.K., the Textiles and Fashion museum is another great place to go for ideas and to get the feel of an exhibition space, its not far from the Design museum and you can get a combined ticket. It’s a great opportunity to get your work out into industry and for potential Universities and colleges to see.

Here are some visuals of what the exhibition will look like, above is an image of the art space, so if that’s you’re area think about what would look good positioned on the moon rocks or on the walls, anything is allowed and we will work around your design to make it fit in the exhibition space. In textiles mannequins will be suspended from the ceiling in flying positions, so think about how your spacey outfits would look from all angles. In photography (right) the images will be printed onto glass and suspended. Each room will have a live interactive section where visitors can see how your ideas were created, and maybe even have a go themselves. Good luck!
