- Martin Luther King, Jr. The state of our discord feels dramatically changed lately.The country feels like it’s ran to its perpetual corners wherethere is no discussion going on as how we can all cometogether and find common ground to move our communities,cities and country forward.

Feels like to me that as individuals due to the growingpopularity of social media and cable news channels thatservice only ones points of view we have forgotten the art ofcommunication along with listening to ideas and points ofview that might differ from our own.

What strikes me the most is that this division is happeningstrikingly within our communities of faith that should bechampioning and modeling the ideal that loving one anotherwas the last request that was given onto us as the finalcommandment by the one who came and dwelt among us sothat we might live.

Living with such discord, chaos and uncertainty makes us allbe jumpy and it gives us all the liberty to doubt one anotherand live in fear. If our families, neighbors, friends, the mediaand elected officials are all spewing ideas yet notcommunicating with anyone other than their own groupswhere there is common ideals how are we ever going to growas individuals and as a nation?

The story of this country was not written on the backs of justone set of individuals. The story of this country who thisyoung boy fell in love with from the moment that I crossedits borders it’s a story of Christians, Catholics, Jews,Muslims, Gay, Straight, Black, White . The Story of Americaas I see it through my rose colored glasses is in many waysthe story of Echo Park United Methodist Church thatalthough we come from distinct backgrounds and have strongindividual differences of opinions within our hallowed wallswe have decided to stick with love.

Everyone has the right to protest and speak out their mindhowever it’s time to come together as a nation and movebeyond this election. As a child of God and a citizens it’simperative however that we stay involved for we the peoplehas always been the driving force that moves this countryforward. As a young then Illinois Senator in 2003 once toldus "We remain more than collection of red states and bluestates. We are and forever will be the United States ofAmerica." Brothers and Sisters it’s about time the we remindourselves of that.

El estado de nuestra discordia se siente dramáticamentecambiado últimamente. El país se siente como si hubieracorrido a sus rincones perpetuos donde no hay discusión enmarcha como la forma en que todos podemos unirnos yencontrar un terreno común para mover nuestrascomunidades, ciudades y países hacia adelante.

Me parece que como individuos debido a la crecientepopularidad de los medios de comunicación social y loscanales de noticias por cable que sólo sirven de puntos devista, hemos olvidado el arte de la comunicación junto concomo escuchar las ideas y puntos de vista que pueden diferirde los nuestros.

Lo que más me impresiona es que esta división estáocurriendo de maneras orprendente dentro de nuestrascomunidades de fe, que deben defender y modelar el ideal deque amarnos unos a otros fue la última petición que nos fuedada como el mandamiento final por quien vino y habitóentre nosotros Para que podamos vivir.

Vivir con tal discordia, caos e incertidumbre nos hace estartodos nerviosos y nos da toda la libertad de dudar unos deotros y vivir con miedo. Si nuestras familias, vecinos,amigos, los medios de comunicación y los funcionarioselectos están arrojando ideas sin comunicarse con nadie másque con sus propios grupos donde hay ideales comunes,¿cómo vamos a crecer como individuos y como nación?

La historia de este país no estaba escrita en la espalda de unsolo grupo de individuos. La historia de este país al que estejovencito se enamoró desde el momento en que cruzo susfronteras es una historia de cristianos, católicos, judíos,musulmanes, negros, blancos. La Historia de América comolo veo a través de mis gafases en muchos sentidos la historiade la Iglesia Metodista Unida de Echo Park que aunqueprovengamos de distintos orígenes y tienen fuertesdiferencias individuales de opiniones dentro de nuestrasparedes santificadas hemos decidido aferrarse al amor.

Todo el mundotiene derecho a protestar y a expresar suopinión, sin embargo, es hora de unirse como nación ymoverse más allá de esta elección. Como hijo de Dios y delos ciudadanos, es imprescindible que permanezcamosinvolucrados para nosotros, el pueblo, siempre ha sido lafuerza motriz que mueve a este país hacia adelante. Como elsenador joven antes de Illinois en 2003 nos dijo una vez:"Seguimos siendo más que la colección de estados rojos yestados azules. Somos y siempre seremos los Estados Unidosde América." Hermanos y Hermanas, ya es hora derecordarnos de eso.

A CONFESSIONand a PROMISE

In response to questions from a friendly interviewer,United Methodist Bishop Elaine Stanovsky explainedher participation in the Women’s March in Eugene,Oregon in this way:

It’s really important that the church remind allthe people of the country that their voices areimportant, that they’re precious, created, belovedchildren of God, and that nothing can take awaytheir dignity and their voice…. You know, we’reall about fullness of life for people. And thatmeans education; it means health care; it meansjob opportunity. There’s just so much.Everything in the life of people matters toChristians.

I am proud that Bishop Stanovsky showed up for theWomen’s March, and I am thankful for her wordsreminding us of the need for the Church to be involvedin bettering the lives of people in the world.

I believe that the Women’s March will prove to be animportant moment in the history of this nation. TheMarch was not primarily intended to be an act of protestagainst the presidency of Donald Trump, although suchprotest clearly did happen. The March was conceivedinstead as a means for helping and encouraging womenand their supporters to realize that they didn’t have to bepassive in this nation’s political processes. They coulduse their voice, and demand their rights as women. Theycould march to make this nation more just and equitablefor all. They could be active participants in forging afuture with hope for children. And, by coming togetherin unity, they could transform the world for the better.

The historical power of the Women’s March lies in thefact that more than 3.5 million people came togetheracross this nation to abandon passivity and silence, andto renew their commitment to work diligently to makethis world a better place. If the energy of the Women’sMarch can be sustained, then there will always be hope,no matter who resides in the White House or whocontrols the Congress.

En respuesta a las preguntas de un entrevistador amable,la Obispo Metodista Unida Elaine Stanovsky explicó suparticipación en la Marcha de la Mujeres en Eugene,Oregon de este modo:

Es muy importante que la iglesia recuerda todala gente del país que sus voces son importantes,que ellos son hijos de Dios preciosos, creados yamados, y que nada puede quitarles la dignidady la voz…. Estoy orgulloso de que la Obispo Stanovsky participó enla Marcha de las Mujeres, y estoy agradecido por suspalabras recordándonos la necesidad de que la iglesiaesté involucrada en mejorar las vidas de la gentealrededor del mundo.

Pienso que la Marcha de las Mujeres será un momentoimportante en la historia de este país. La Marcha notenía la intención de ser un acto de protesta contra lapresidencia de Donald Trump, aunque tal protestaclaramente sucedió. I affirm Bishop Stanovsky’s words that everything in thelife of people matters to Christians. How could it beotherwise? We follow a Savior who preaches goodnews to the poor, proclaims release to the captives,offers recovery of sight to the blind, frees the oppressed,and proclaims the year of God’s favor. (Luke 4:18-19)As the scriptures tell us, Jesus came so that all of us – atall levels and stages of existence – might have life andhave it abundantly. (John 10:10) Jesus’ calling is ourown. As Jesus’ followers, we too commit ourselves tothe holy work of helping all people enter into theabundant life for which God has created them.

I am glad to have been part of the Women’s March inLos Angeles. It was an exciting and exhilaratingexperience. I hope that the energy of that march carriesover into the weeks and months ahead. After all, it’s notenough to march on just one day. We need to emergefrom the cocoons of apathy and despair within which wesometimes grow far too comfortable. And, we need toengage in the political processes of this nation with allof our hopes, dreams and values intact.

At a minimum, this means that we who are followers ofJesus must exercise our right to vote. More than that,however, we need to hold our elected and appointedpolitical leaders accountable, encouraging them whenthey do what is right and confronting them when they dowhat is wrong. We can write letters, make phone calls,and send emails. We can join political advocacy groups,attend constituent meetings, participate in NeighborhoodCouncils, or even run for political office ourselves.Sometimes, we may discover that the only way to makeour voice heart is to take part in a rallies or marches. Theimportant thing is to keep involved. Given the powerthat our government holds over the well-being of thevery people God loves, how can the followers of Jesusdo any differently? It is a key part of our Christiandiscipleship.

Let me call attention to two important opportunities inlocal governance that you might consider:

1. The Echo Park Neighborhood Council (EPNC)meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. All

Podemos unirnos a grupos dedefensa política, asistir a reuniones constituyentes,participar en Consejos Vecinales, o presentarnos comocandidatos para cargos politicos. A veces podamosdescubrir que la única manera de hacer oír nuestra vozes participar en concentraciones o marchas. Loimportante es mantenernos involucrados. 2. Each Thursday afternoon, Mitch O’Farrell, our CityCouncilperson for the 13th District, holds officehours at his Constituent Center at 1722 Sunset Blvd.(next to the Out of the Closet thrift store). If youhave any concerns about what is going on in our cityand you are resident in the 13th District, you areinvited to stop by and visit.

These are just two specific ideas out of manypossibilities. The important thing is to get involved, andto do so as a person of faith.

We thank all those from our church as well as thosefrom other organizations and groups who joined us inhosting the “ECHO PARK LOS ANGELESHOMELESS COUNT” organized by the City of LosAngeles last Thursday, January 26, 2017. The goal ofthis Project was to count as many homeless personsthere are in the City of Los Angeles in order for the CityCouncil to appropriate sufficient funds to help them risefrom the predicament they are in. We will not mentionnames as there were too many involved and we arelikely to forget some names, but you know who you areand we thank you and wish abundant blessings uponyou.

Gracias a todos de la iglesia como tambien los de otrasorganizaciones y grupos que reunieron con nosotros enanfitrionando el “CONTAR LOS SIN HOGARES DEECHO PARK EN LOS ANGELES, organizado por laCiudad de Los Angeles el pasado 26 de enero de 2017.El objetivo de este proyecto era contar el número depersonas sin hogar que hay en la ciudad de Los Ángelespara que el Concilio puede apropiarse de fondossuficientes para ayudarles a salir de la situación en laque están. No Vamos a mencionar nombres, ya quehabía demasiado involucrados y es probable queolvidemos algunos nombres, pero ustedes saben quiénesson y agradecemos y deseamos abundantes bendicionessobre todos.

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The outlet flexible line from the water heater to the sinkfaucet in the restrooms on the main floor began to leak.The line had to be replaced with a new flexible copperline. Sherman McClellan volunteered to replace the line.It was not a simple job as the flexible line had to betwisted into an almost impossible shape to be properlyconnected. Sherman had to take the new line to hishome workshop to use a clamp and vise to get theproper shape in the line. The new line is now connectedand hot water continues to be available in the restroomsinks. Many thanks to Sherman for a morning of workand the use of his knowledge and tools.

La línea tuvo que ser reemplazadapor una nueva línea de cobre flexible. ShermanMcClellan se ofreció para reemplazar la línea. Reservoir was badly in need of repair. Watering, dry rot,termites, and age caused some of the 2 x 6 lumber to rotaway. The box had to be rebuilt from the ground up. Ittook a lot of measuring and cutting wood at an anglealong with many deck screws to repair the box. The jobwas done by LaDell Stapp with assistance from DanielCrouse in about four hours of hard work. Many thanks,LaDell and Daniel, for making this area a lot nicer.Special thanks to LaDell for the use of his tools.

The Trustees have finally completed the list of Churchproperty as required by the Methodist Church Book ofDiscipline. This required the listing of all property inevery room of the church, a job that needed six hours tocomplete. Thanks to Lisa Palombi and Mark Phillips forgiving their MLK holiday to complete this list. Shouldour church suffer a major disaster, our insurancecompany would need this list to make replacements.

Thanks to an anonymous donor, our church has receivedninety five new white folding chairs and a baby-changing table. Mark Phillips unpacked forty of the newchairs and put them in our dining room. The rest of thenew chairs will be placed in other rooms as needed.

The baby-changing table is located in the handicappedbathroom on the main floor of the church. It islightweight, attached to east wall of the room, and caneasily be pulled down to use. Many thanks to LisaPalombi for ordering this changing table and having itinstalled (fastened to the wall) by a local handyman.

Both the new chairs and the baby-changing table weregifts to the church and did not have to be purchased ourof our Church General Fund. The Board of Trustees andthe congregation of our Church sincerely appreciatethese gifts. We thank the anonymous giver very muchfor them, and we want them to know that they will beappreciated for many, many years.

District UMW held its “Unit Officers TrainingProgram” on January 14 at Paramount United MethodistChurch, 16635 Paramount Boulevard, Paramount, CA90723. The California-Pacific UMW will hold its mid-winter event at Wilshire United Methodist Church, 4350Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90010, onFebruary 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Thetheme/topic of the event is “Welcoming the Stranger.”There will be a panel discussion after the presentationsand lectures regarding the theme/topic at which Rev.David Farley, Director of Justice and CompassionMinistries of the Cal-Pac Conference UMC, will be oneof the Panelists.

The United Methodist Women continually wanteveryone to be aware that “Super Bowl Sunday” is alsothe day when more women, youth and children aretrafficked than any other day of the year. We have beenasked to show our solidarity with those who fight humantrafficking by having our picture taken with boxesmarked “box human trafficking.” We will assemble inthe basement “Fellowship Room” for our picture-takingsession on February 5 after Fellowship Time.

We invite all ladies from age 7 to 107 to join us for ourmeetings on the second Sunday of every month. PastorFrank Wulf has volunteered to do a brief Bible Study ateach of our meetings.

We also have books that have been chosen by theNational Committee of United Methodist Women andlisted as “recommended reading” for all UMW units.Please sign out for the books you take, and sign themback in when you return them after reading them.

The All-Church Rummage Sale will be held onSaturday, March 4. As usual, we will need volunteerworkers on Friday, March 3, and on the day of the Sale.

The Echo Park UMW Unit will organize and lead theWorship Service on United Methodist Women Sunday,March 19. More details will be included in the Marchissue of the Echo.
