From the Editor

In our struggle to “walking the walk” and “talking thetalk” of our Christian faith, we find ourselves constantlychallenging ourselves to live out our lives with thispicture that has been implanted in our heads by societyof how a Christians ought to behave and/or to act like.At times, we, ourselves, set ourselves up to fail whenwe don’t meet a certain standard of conduct that wehave set before us to follow.

What the Lord does require of us, however, is simply toseek justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humblywith our God. Time and time again, God reminds usthroughout the scriptures that we are the belovedtreasures made in the reflection of the being whocreated us to be witnesses to that unconditional lovegiven unto all of us.

The call to follow Jesus was never supposed to be aneasy stroll around the park. As individuals, however,some have taken things to another level by instilling insociety this idea that, in order to deserve God’s love,we have to meet a certain criteria - a criteria that isbased on the bias and/or ignorance of polluted andcorrupted ways which are used to see people’sdifferences rather than embracing their individualities.

In God’s eyes, we are all beloved children, and thedetailed love, care and devotion that was placed increating each and every one of our nuances shouldnever be questioned, but celebrated. I’ve heard it bestdescribed recently, that as a people and/or individuals,“We are not meant to be perfect, we are meant to bewhole.”

We find “wholeness” is laughter and tears, successesand tribulations. “Wholeness” is found in lovingunconditionally without the fear of rejection.“Wholeness” is found in loving your neighbor, yoursister, your brother, your mother, your father, andespecially, your “enemy.” “Wholeness” is in seeing andfeeling God in the wind, in the trees, in the flowers, inthe flowing force of the waters of the rivers and theoceans. More simply, “wholeness” is with you inopening and rubbing your eyes in the morning to therays of the sun, while being fully present and gratefulthat you have been given another chance to make yourlife a little bit more whole for yet another day.

En nuestra lucha por "caminar el camino" y "platicar laplatica" de nuestra fe cristiana, nos encontramosconstantemente desafiándonos a nosotros mismos avivir nuestras vidas con esta imagen que se haimplantado en nuestras cabezas por la sociedad decómo un cristiano debe comportarse y/o actuar. Aveces, nosotros mismos nos marcamos al fracasocuando no ajustamos a una determinada norma deconducta que hemos puesto delante de nosotros paraseguir.

Lo que el Señor requiere de nosotros, sin embargo, noes más que buscar la justicia, y amar misericordia, ycaminar humildemente con nuestro Dios. Una y otravez, Dios nos recuerda a través de las Escrituras quesomos los amados tesoros hechos en la reflexión delser que nos creó para ser testigos del amorincondicional dado a todos nosotros.

La llamada a seguir a Jesús no se suponía era unpaseo por el parque. Como individuos, sin embargo,algunos han tomado las cosas a otro nivel al inculcaren la sociedad la idea de que, para merecer el amor deDios, tenemos que cumplir con ciertos criterios - uncriterio que está basado en el prejuicio y/o la ignoranciade la contaminación y las corrompida formas que seutilizan para ver las diferencias de la gente en vez deabrazar a sus individualidades.

En los ojos de Dios, todos somos hijos amados, y elamor detallado, la atención y la devoción que fueronpuesto en la creación de todos y de cada uno denuestras sutilezas nunca debe ser cuestionada, sinocelebrada. He oído lo mejor descrito recientemente,que como un pueblo y/o individuos, "No estamosdestinados a ser perfecto, estamos destinados a sercompleto."

Encontramos "la totalidad" es la risa y las lágrimas, loséxitos y las tribulaciones. "La totalidad" se encuentra enel amor incondicional, sin el miedo al rechazo. "Latotalidad" se encuentra en el amor al prójimo, a tuhermana, tu hermano, tu madre, tu padre, y sobre todo,tu "enemigo." "La totalidad" está en ver y sentir a Diosen el viento, en los árboles, las flores, en la fuerza quefluye de las aguas de los ríos y los océanos. Mássimplemente, "la totalidad" está con ustedes en laapertura y frotar sus ojos por la mañana a los rayos delsol, mientras estar completamente presente yagradecido de que se le ha dado otra oportunidad parahacer su vida un poco más completa para otra día.

One of the ways Jesus sought to teach the disciplesabout the meaning of his call to repentance was to tellthem a parable about a barren fig tree and a gardenerwho came to give it another chance to bear fruit. (Luke13:6-9). For Jesus the message is not “Repent, for theend is near,” but, rather, “Repent, for the Kingdom ofGod is at hand.” “There is a new future ahead. Don’tmiss it because your back is turned toward God. Turnaround.”

Repentance has to do with the transformation of afruitless life into a fruitful one and the Kingdom is thatrealm in which all the fruits of creation and the fruits ofthe Spirit are shared.

We live in a world where human persons and thehuman community are caught up in terrible self-destructive cycles; cycles of violence, of injustice, ofgreed built upon greed and suffering piled uponsuffering, of prejudice rising out of fear and lonelinessborn out of mistrust. And the message of the Gospel is:“This does not have to be!” The message of the crossis: “This ends here! The cycle is broken. These patternsof hatred and cruelty, of division and exclusion, ofdestruction and repression, end here! Turn around.Repent. Return to the God of love. Reclaim your life.Embrace the you God created you to be. Let God’s lovebe planted in your soul. Let God’s grace water the seedand bring forth the fruits of the Spirit and let them beshared - the fruits of transformation, healing,reconciliation, gentleness, joy, justice and peace. Thetime is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand,repent and believe in the gospel.”

Una de las maneras en que Jesús trataron de enseñara los discípulos acerca del significado de su llamado alarrepentimiento fue a contarles una parábola sobre lahiguera estéril y un jardinero que vino a darle otraoportunidad de dar fruto. (Lucas 13:6-9). Para Jesús, elmensaje no es "Arrepentíos, porque el fin está cerca,"sino, más bien, "Arrepentíos, porque el Reino de Diosestá cerca." "Hay un nuevo futuro por delante. No te lopierdas, porque tu espalda se vuelve hacia Dios. Datela vuelta."

El arrepentimiento tiene que ver con la transformaciónde una vida inútil en una provechosa y, el Reino es esereino en el que todos los frutos de la creación y losfrutos del Espíritu son compartidos.

Vivimos en un mundo donde las personas humanas y lacomunidad humana se ven envueltos en terriblesauto-destructivos ciclos, los ciclos de violencia, deinjusticia, de la codicia basada en la codicia y elsufrimiento acumulado en el sufrimiento, de losprejuicios que surge de miedo y la soledad nacida de ladesconfianza. Y el mensaje del Evangelio es: "¡Esto notiene que ser!" El mensaje de la cruz es: "¡Esto terminaaquí! El ciclo está roto. ¡Estos patrones de odio ycrueldad, de división y exclusión, de destrucción yrepresión, terminan aquí! Date la vuelta. Arrepiéntete.Regrese al Dios del amor. Recupera tu vida. Abraza loque Dios te creó para ser. Que el amor de Dios seplanta en tu alma. Deje que la gracia de Dios reiga lasemilla y produce los frutos del Espíritu y deje que seancompartido - los frutos de la transformación, lasanación, la reconciliación, la dulzura, la alegría, lajusticia y la paz. El tiempo se ha cumplido y el Reino deDios se ha acercado, arrepentíos y creed en elevangelio."

We honor and give thanks for the life ofTILDA KING who lived to be 91 years oldand died on February 22. Our prayers arewith her daughter, NORA, son-in-law,DAVID, grandchildren, NICOLO, EMILYand HANNAH, and her entire extendedfamily. Tilda was quite a force here at EchoPark UMC throughout the years, active inthe Christian Education Program and aleader in the church’s involvement inCommunity Service and Social Justice. Shewas also a leading activist in the broadercommunity who touched the lives ofcountless persons, and was recognized bymany city leaders including Mayor Bradley.We are grateful for all she did to help makethis church what it is and to help make somany of us who we are.....

JESSE GILBERT is recuperating from a stroke that resultedin paralysis on her left side. She is undergoing rehabilitativetherapy . We pray for her total recovery and the return of allher strength.....

MILDRED MONTENEGRO is now undergoing regulardialysis. Our prayers continue to be with her.....

STEPHANIE KIMEC is away on a tripback east from February 27 throughMarch 18 to attend two mission relatedevents and spend some vacation timewith her family. Nosotros honramos y damos gracias por lavida de TILDA KING que vivió hasta los 91años de edad y murió el 22 de Febrero.Nuestras oraciones están con su hija, NORA,yerno, DAVID, nieto y nietas, NICOLO,EMILY y HANNAH, y su familia entera.Tilda era una fuerza aquí en la IMU de EchoPark, a lo largo de los años, activo en elPrograma de Educación Cristiana y un líderen la participación de la iglesia en Servicio ala Comunidad y la Justicia Social. Tambiénfue una activista líder en la comunidad másamplia que tocó las vidas de innumerablespersonas, y fue reconocido por líderes de laciudad como el Alcalde Bradley. Estamosmuy agradecidos por todo lo que ella hizopara ayudar a hacer de esta iglesia lo que es,y por ayudar a hacer de muchos de nosotroslo que somos.....

The garden on the Alvarado Street side of the church hasreceived many new plants, thanks to Doug, Christina andKenn Requa, with the help of Mark Phillips. They took onthis maintenance and landscaping job and the results lookreally good. When the new plants grow and flower, that sideof the church will really be the envy of the community. Manythanks for the plants and the hours of time given to plantthem!

Some of the boards became loose on two of our outdoorfurniture benches, probably through much use. Many thanksto Alex Bussing for installing support pieces and new deckscrews. With the new coat of paint and the above mentionedrepairs our furniture is holding up very well.

Climbing up to the church roof involves ladders and openingheavy trap doors. We had a leak on the west side of the mainsanctuary during the last rain so it became necessary to locateand patch the leak. Many thanks to Mark Phillips and AlexBussing for making this repair.

El jardín en el lado de la calle Alvarado de la iglesia harecibido nuevas plantas, gracias a Doug, Christina y KennRequa, con la ayuda de Mark Phillips. Ellos tomaron a estetrabajo de mantenimiento y jardinería y los resultados se venrealmente bien. Cuando las nuevas plantas crecen y florecen,ese lado de la iglesia verdaderamente será la envidia de lacomunidad. ¡Muchas gracias por las plantas y las horas detiempo en que se les plante!

Algunos de los tableros se aflojaron en dos de nuestrosbancos de muebles al aire libre, probablemente por muchautilidad. Muchas gracias a Alex Bussing por la instalación depiezas de soporte y los nuevos tornillos de la cubierta. Con lanueva capa de pintura y las reparaciones antes mencionadasnuestros muebles se sostiene muy bien.

Subir al techo de la iglesia consiste en escaleras y abrir lastrampa puertas pesadas. Tuvimos una fuga en el lado oestedel santuario principal durante la última lluvia por lo que fuenecesario a localizar y arreglar la fuga. Muchas gracias aMark Phillips y Alex Bussing por hacer esta reparación.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we go into this Lenten season, my thoughts are about whatwe can do as Children of God.

Some of the women from the UMW went to a conferencewhere we learned not only what the many needs are but whatis being done to meet these needs. This, however, challengesme to think about our own Los Angeles and what can we dofor those who (for whatever reason) do not have jobs, havebeen in drug rehab, or maybe, even jail, and with some, forreally no fault of their own. There is still so much humantrafficking in our back yard. As a UMW, I feel that we needto be aware of the challenges out there and of the needs ofour neighbors.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,

Al entrar en esta temporada de Cuaresma, mis pensamientosson acerca de lo que podemos hacer como hijos de Dios.

Algunas de las mujeres de las MMU fueron a una conferenciaen la que hemos aprendido no sólo lo que son las muchasnecesidades, sino lo que se está haciendo para responder aestas necesidades. Esto, sin embargo, me reta a pensar ennuestra propia Los Angeles y lo que podemos hacer poraquellos que (por cualquier razón) no tienen trabajo, haestado en rehabilitación de drogas, o tal vez, incluso la cárcel,y con algunos, realmente sin culpa propia. Todavía existetanto tráfico de personas en nuestro patio trasero. Como unaMMU, creo que tenemos que ser conscientes de los retos porahí y de las necesidades de nuestros vecinos.

Through our connections, we have an opportunity to helpmeet the needs of the people in Gulfport, Mississippi. Therewill be youth and adults from Echo Park UMC as well aspeople from Westwood UMC who will be working atrebuilding the homes of the Katrina victims. We have sixyouth who have signed up to go, as well as two adults. Weare asking for donations to help sponsor our youth. We willbe having fundraisers, such as selling food after coffee houron March 4 and at the Rummage Sale on March 10.Remember that part of the proceeds from the Rummage Salegoes towards “the Missions,” so please come and help asmuch as possible . Also, part of the proceeds from PastorDavid’s concert on March 11 will go to the “Youth Fund.”Since this is the Lenten season (and also a time of prayer andself-denial), we might want to donate a coin (of our choice)for every room in our house (for example, a quarter each forthe living room, the bedroom, the dining room, the kitchen,the bathroom, will amount to $1.25 daily, or $8,75 weekly, or$12.50 for 10 days). Checks should be made out to WestwoodUMC, with “Mission Project” in the Memo line. You mayhand in your donations to Carla Moreno or Lois Price. Weneed to have all your donations by Sunday, March 18.

Ladies, the Los Angeles District lost the Reading Banner tothe Pasadena District, so we really need to work hard to getit back.

God has given all of us many Blessings, and so, we must giveto those who need our help.
