It’s cer- tainly no one’s idea of a pocket pistol. Magnum Research also makes “Baby” Desert Eagle Pistols, in 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP cal- ibers that run from about 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 pounds. The newest Desert Eagle, how- ever, is the “Micro,” an ultra-compact .380 that weighs a tad less than 14 ounces unloaded. Thanks to some really effective defense loads in recent years, the .380 ACP cartridge has come into its own as a personal protection round. Granted, it’s no .45. But how many .45s can be easily concealed in a pocket or purse? The .380 ACP is a perfectly adequate defense cartridge, particularly at con- versational dis- tances. And, peo- ple are buying a lot of pocket .380s, made by Kel-Tec, North American Arms, Ruger and Seecamp, to name a few. With today’s uncertainty about what tomorrow’s gun laws might bring, and an increased emphasis on concealed carry, there will be a lot more .380s out there. Unlike most newly hatched firearms, which make their debut at the SHOT Show, the Micro Desert Eagle came to my attention through an ad in one of the gun publications. I contacted Magnum Research on-line to get a sample to test and evalu- ate. The package arrived by FedEx the next day. My first impression of the Micro Desert Eagle was: This was exactly the kind of very small pistol that I would expect from a company known for its very large pistols. Small as it is, there is a definite feeling of solidity to this pistol; it feels like you could use it as a skull crusher if you ran out of ammo! And it is indeed a bit heavier than the competi- tion. Fully loaded, the Micro runs 15.8 ounces. The Seecamp LWS380 is 13.8 ounces, and the Ruger LCP is 11.8 ounces. The Micro Desert Eagle is a Double-Action- Only pistol. The trigger pull was ini- tially very heavy, but got quite a bit lighter with use. Even so, it was off the 8-pound scale on my RCBS trigger pull gauge; I’d esti- mate 10-12 pound pull, similar to my Seecamp LWS380, which is also a DAO. The Ruger LCP has about a 7- 1/2-pound pull, but it’s not a conven- tional DAO, but a pre-cocked trigger like the Glock. Like most DAO pocket pistols, there is no safety per se; the long, heavy trigger pull is the safety. At the range, I set up a silhouette target at seven yards, a realistic distance for a class of pistol whose nor- mal employment is “stick it in their ear and pull the trig- ger.” It took about three or four magazine loads to get accustomed to the long DAO trigger, and then I was pleasantly surprised to get some very nice offhand groups…seven shots in two to three inches. I was using Remington 88-grain JHPs, Winchester 85- grain Silvertip HPs and Federal 90-grain Hydra- Shoks. The more expensive Hydra-Shoks delivered the groups closer to two inches, not that group size is that critical in the type of situation where THE EAGLET HAS LANDED: The Ruger LCP weighs 11.8 ounces when loaded. Fully loaded, the Micro Desert Eagle runs 15.8 ounces. The Seecamp LWS380 is 13.8 ounces, loaded. March 10 Blue Press Section 1 1/13/10 11:55 AM Page 10
