%ear 3ea"er,
#any people I have met these past few weeks tell me they e4pect the new year to be$much better than this one(. 5n" listening to their stories it seems to be true that they
ran into serious ba" luck an" trouble in the past year. 'o yes- if you ha" a ba" year, the
ne4t one must be better, right6 5s a personal note- I always prefer a horse to a snake.
'ofar, the lineup for this year is a mi4 of "ifferent services-
• consultancy training courses for pro8ect managers Vietnamese organi:ation;
• personal coaching management team members European multinational;
• public courses on 03# topics an" communication Vietnamese knowhow provi"er;
• tailorma"e management "evelopment programs for management teams European
multinational;

-an robots connect the +ots
Ahen my client asks for my opinion of a 8ob can"i"ate, I look at the resumC or cv, checking-
• what are past contributions6 verifiable results/ complete" pro8ects;
• is the e4perience relevant to the 8ob6
• what are the lengths of gaps in employment6
• "o I un"erstan" everything6 consistency;
*esi"e these points I look for something specific- is the can"i"ate a learner-for-life6 If a cv
shows that after gra"uation the person ha" no further formal learning, I have my "oubts.
=esDyou may argue the workplace is a learning e4perience- true. 'o what can "ecent formal
learning a"" to work e4perience6 <ne wor"- un"erstan"ing. To be successful in any activity,
knowing how is not sufficient. Even connecting the dots is not enough. !irst you nee" to
un"erstan" what "ots to connect, an" then fin" out what the connections mean. Toparaphrase 'teve obs- to"ay you can only connect the "ots of the past to"ay, not the
future "ots. *ut you&ll be far better in connecting "otsDpast and futureDwhen you
recogni:e an" un"erstan" both "ots connections. In other wor"s- what makes this know
how work. <nly then e4perience counts. “Length of emploment! tells me something about
loalt" not that he or she has learned anthing. ?ifelong learners are better connectors.
'ome employers tell me they woul" prefer robots over real people. 5s you will know, robots
are terrible learners. They nee" to be programme", an" speciali:e" technicians to repair
them. 'ure,
they "on&t

when these "o
not make any
sense. They

Ahen I worke" for a %utch bank, )M years ago, a particular work ethic ha" come to life.
#ain characteristic- "evotion to work is everything, private life is no priority. In my bank
the IT "epartment, le" by a "ynamic manager, was the first to a"opt this new work ethic.
Ahen you&" take your career seriously, you&" work overtime most evenings. Jnpai" of
course. =ou woul" come to work on your free 'atur"ays, an" spen" 'un"ay evening pre
paring for the coming week. =ou woul" take a minimal holi"ay leave. <f course most staff
were young single. They ha" a glare in their eyes as if they belonge" to a religious cult.
The manager ha" turne" them into blin" followers. 5fter some time the price of this new
business culture became evi"ent- some staffDin particular, those with familyDreali:e"
that this wasn&t the kin" of work they signe" up for. Two figures starte" to increase- N ofstressrelate" sick leave, an" N of staff turnover. lus- failing customer service. %vertime

me know if you "o. I plan a special on this sub8ect in the near future.
Vietnamese love to reunite
with ol" school bu""ies, former
colleagues an" of course, fami
ly. 5t we""ing parties I&m always surprise" to see O, 2 or
more tables with highschool,
college or university frien"s,
an" former colleagues often
from "ifferent companies;. 3e
unions are at least once a year.
Lot so in The Letherlan"s.
%utch reunite less freFuently,
an" with less people. 5t we"
"ings we may invite a few special frien"s or colleagues, but
that&s it. Ae consi"er M B
guests are enough. Thanks to
the internet it&s easy to trace ol" frien"s. Low then one of them shows up in 'aigon. It&s
great to compare notes after many years. *ram I were school bu""ies in 19771. ?ast
time we met was B years ago at a reunion the secon" one in 2 years;. *ram is a success
ful surgeon, who has become the spokesperson an" opinion lea"er in his specialty. 0e has
"onate" lots of time teaching "octors an" financing hospitals in less "evelope" countries.

Many populated areas around the world are locate" in river "eltas. The #ekong %elta

an" bio"iversity. ,oing nothing means floo"ing will become inevitable, as the #ekong %elta
is virtually unprotecte" against the rising of the sea level.
