Brother Matthew Mayher

Hello to all my fellow brothers and

alumni. This past semester was very busy

as usual, but amidst the tests and papers,

the fraternity was able to recruit guys,

conduct a philanthropy event, and enjoy

some brotherhood events. As you may

recall, the fraternity attended a recruitment

workshop at Case Western University

followed by a mini-brotherhood retreat

both headed by Dave Sirery, one of

Chapter Iota Iota’s founding fathers.

During these events, those of us who

attended expressed our concerns over

recruitment and how vital it is not only for

this year, but every year. I am glad to

announce that the chapter pulled together

and recruited ten fine young men. Over the

course of the eight weeks of pledge

education classes, the fraternity was able to

really get to know and welcome the new

members into our chapter.

In other news, the fraternity also

conducted a philanthropy event. A

volleyball tournament was organized and

put on with all the proceeds going to

Autism Speaks. This was the fraternity’s

first philanthropy event. We will be

continuing it in the years to come.

Lastly, as some of you have heard, I

was in the hospital over Thanksgiving

break. Prior to my hospital stay I had been

very ill. The virus I had caused a severe

reaction in my throat to occur, requiring

me to seek out medical attention. The

doctors told me I had developed severe

tonsillitis. Fortunately, I was let out of the

hospital the day before Thanksgiving so I

was able to enjoy my family’s traditional

Thanksgiving dinner. As of right now I

am doing quite well and was able to finish

off the semester without much difficulty.

Due to my bout of illness The Crescent

was only recently finished.

It has been a pleasure serving as the

interim secretary now that my term is

over. You will be hearing from the new

secretary Alex Wells in the next

newsletter. For now though, I wish all my

brothers and the alumni a Merry

Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Brother John Daily

Brothers, it is my great pleasure to announce to you that the Fifth Annual Iris Ball will be

held on Saturday April 21, 2012. Brother Owen Pella has replaced Brother Tyler Bond as the

chairmen for Founder’s Weekend, due to Tyler’s unexpected early graduation in December. With

this in mind, I know Mark has set up an alumni committee to aid Owen in organizing and planning

Founder’s Weekend. Those of you who are sitting on this committee, you can reach Owen

through e-mail at [email protected] or 724-494-4208.

As my final letter as president of the chapter to both current and past brothers I would like

to inform you on the chapters progress since my last publication earlier this past term. Through

the work of the whole chapter we were able to welcome eleven new members into our

brotherhood. Throughout the eight week pledge period, the new members have been able to learn

about what Delt is and they have begun to create lifelong relationships with fellow brothers. I am

also proud to announce that through both the work of Brother William Gerken and the new

members, we had yet another 100 percent pass rate on the exam. Our new brothers where initiated

on October 13, 2011. This new class brings our membership to 31 members.

On the philanthropy front, the chapter hosted its first volleyball tournament for Autism

Speaks U. We had a great showing from the local Greek community and Zeta chapter to have a

total of 16 teams compete. Although we did not make our found raising goals, we were able to

raise roughly $600.00. Also, the chapter partnered with the Residents Hall Association Tick-or-

Treat, to serve as an annual Adopt-A-School event every October. Also, the service committee is

in the process of setting up an official Adopt-A-School location. We have been working with the

Center for Service and Social Action all semester to do so. Currently we have narrowed our

options down to two programs, and hope to make a decision on which to partner with by the end

of November.

After many of hours and the development of gray hairs the 2011 FAAR was final

completed and mailed to Central Office on October 31, 2011. The document consisting of 240

pages was a major task. The approach taken in the preparation of the FAAR was to mimic last

years, but improve the areas that we lost ten or more points in. By doing it in this manner, I and

the rest of the executive board have high hopes to move up in the national rankings. Hopefully, in

February our hard work and dedication for this year will be rewarded with another Court of Honor

or better. If anyone wishes to view the 2011 FAAR please contact me at [email protected] and I

will be more than happy to send you a PDF copy of it.

Presidential Letter Continued:

Other aspects of chapter life since the last edition are as follows. The semester’s

brotherhood retreat was held at Thorn Acers on November 12, 2011. Both active and new

members alike were in attendance. Socially, we have had a couple mixers with the lovely sorority

women on campus and are begging to plan mixers and other social events for the spring term.

Finally, we have had a series of ROAD presentations in the past weeks. Both presented by campus

faculty and brothers alike.

The chapter will be holding elections on November 27, 2011. All indications point to a

young executive board. Due to this fact, Iota Iota and Zeta will be holding a cooperative executive

retreat facilitated by Doug Russell the chapter’s leadership consultant during his visit the week

following elections. It is my hope that by conducting transitions in this way, we will be able to

educate the new executive board more efficiently, and also continue to develop our relationship

with Zeta Chapter. By doing so, the new board will have additional resources to help aid them

during they adjustments as well as an outside prospective to bounce ideas off of to better the

chapter. Not only will this benefit chapter functions, but it will also hopefully increases brotherly

bonds between the two chapters.

Finally, the chapter had five members apply to Order of Omega this semester. Of those

five three were accepted. I would like to not only announce them to you all, but congratulate them

on their achievement. They are Brother Michael Baker, Richard Garrison, and myself.

Fraternally, and respectfully yours

John Daily

Over the past semester, 10 potential new members attended the 8 weeks of new

member education classes, where they learned all about the fraternity’s structure, history,

and its values. Big Brother ceremony was held and 5 families welcomed their new brothers.

Alpha family added 3 new brothers, Beta added 1new brother, Zeta family added 1 new

brother, Theta added 1 new brother, and Omega family added 4 new brothers. Delt

development week followed and the pledges experienced Values Night, Rights of Iris, and

Circle Walk. After some last minute studying Thursday, the pledges took the test on Friday

November 11th. On Saturday November 12th, majority of the fraternity brothers and all the

pledges went on the Brotherhood Retreat, where we had fun and learned a lot about each

other as individuals and as brothers of Delta Tau Delta. Finally, on Sunday November 13th

,

Kenny Farona, Anthony DeLeonibus, Austin Gray, Dan Burke, Aaron Graoa, Joseph

Hendricks, Kyle Kerman, Nick Pavio, Alex Wells, and Michael Younes were initiated as

new brothers into Chapter Iota Iota of Delta Tau Delta. I am very happy to welcome and

introduce the newly initiated brothers of Omicron Class.

The Volleyball Tournament

Brotherhood Events

Whirly Ball and Delt Dodgeball

One of the highlights this semester was enjoying a few good games of whirly ball!

Brotherhood Chair Kevin Rossignol, arranged a few games at the local whirly ball arena Saturday,

October 29th

, for the fraternity. About 20 brothers were found throwing wiffle balls at a basket,

while moving around in dodgem like cars. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the several games that

were played. On another note, the fraternity purchased new dodge balls instead of using the old

worn-out JCU balls. As many of the brothers found out, the new dodge balls had quite a bounce to

them. Delt Dodgeball was held consistently every week on Wednesday nights.

As had been planned, the Delt volleyball tournament was held on Saturday, October 12th

.

Those who partook in the tournament were in Greek life, but there were also 4 non-Greek teams.

There were even two teams from Case Western Reserve University including the Zeta Delta Tau

Delta Chapter. In total, 16 teams participated in the tournament. A decent amount of people came

to watch the games and root for their friends. The winner of the tournament was the Sigma Phi

Epsilon team PBR. They won 2 out of 3 games against Beta Theta Pi. Altogether the tournament

raised $600 dollars.

Brother Mark Johnson

My Brothers, being a Delt during my undergraduate years in JCU has

been valuable in preparing me for life after college. My time with the

fraternity not only fostered interpersonal skills which I have duly employed as

an Associate Chemist at Sherwin Williams, but it has also taught me time

management, project prioritization, and budgeting skills (thank you Jeff

Pelletier). These skills have proved useful when hosting meetings at work with

vendors and suppliers to managing product testing to meet deadlines.

Much effort was geared towards accomplishing objectives, never

forgetting the underlying principle of being prepared – which is always great

advice whether it be managing classwork to enjoying a social life. With this in

mind, I invite and encourage everyone to lead and succeed in doing so.

Remember that there are always opportunities in fostering the necessary skills

for leadership such as a leadership conference or a road presentation.

If you are a bit unsure of your abilities, I implore you to take on the

challenge because you never know what your limits are until you test them. My

experience provided me with the confidence to take on difficult challenges in

leading a group, but it also shaped me into a man of integrity that best convey

the meaning of living our ritual. Make the most of every opportunity to grow

and learn since being a Delt will provide you with scores of them, best wishes

during our upcoming holiday season!

Fraternally yours,

Mark Johnson
