From the EditorEvents, dear readers, events, at the very least modify, if notchange, even the most carefully considered plans. I’m sureyou find this at home, work and play. It is certainly true forCrabline. Our plan to move to North Lodge Park in Cromer, announced in Issue 241, has not been realised and, for theforeseeable future, we will continue to operate fromMerchants’ Place; all contact details are unchanged. There have also been some changes to Team Crabline. I amdelighted to now have full editorial responsibility and mustthank colleagues Catherine and Paul for their work sinceJanuary.

Another key change is that Sue Southwell has joined theteam to take up responsibility for advertising. She hasalready met some of our advertising customers and ispreparing to meet you all as quickly as possible. I will leaveSue to introduce herself to you in person. Sue’s contactdetails are shown below.

Many readers will be aware of the mouse problem we seemto have here at the Crabline office. In the latest incident thecontents of the Crabline corporate hospitality biscuit drawerdisappeared in a single night. Consequently I have beenforced to revisit the option of recruiting an office cat. Recentletters to the Editor indicate cats in the area are, somewhatsurprisingly, seeking employment and an email from aninternational organisation based in Europe is an indication ofthe economic problems being faced on the Continent. However the Crabline readership has a range of opinionregarding employment of a cat and some correspondentshave offered interesting alternative solutions to solving themouse problem. There will now be a period of, wait for it,consultation, I know the word has become rather wornoutthese days, however I give readers a clear assurance thatthe future of h mouse rests with them – so do we get a cator don’t we? It’s your call.

Sometimes even the most upsetting events, I am referringto the mindless vandalism (see Crabline 241) of Steve andSteffi Askew’s generous donation of trees planted atWeybourne Community Field, result in something good. Inthis case Weybourne has demonstrated what real communityis about.

It’s a sure sign that spring has happened when the“Asparagus in the next layby” signs burst out. Lets hope Aprilshowers continue a little longer for the farmers and growersto bring all the other great local produce to its seasonal peak. With some easing of water supplies a long, warm summerseason will also be an event to look forward to.

Ctd from page 1Race Night’ at the Ship Inn Weybourne where the villagers took a 20p‘flutter’ on the dice driven ‘races’ and sponsorship of the whole event byKelling Heath Holiday Park, sponsorship of each race, each of the 36‘horses’ , the race cards, fences start and finish lines generated enoughmoney to replace the badly damaged young trees. No doubt strengthenedby the support of the village Neil must be admired for his resolve andgenerous spirit to plant the new trees with the help of of his son Joe.The new trees, all nativespecies including Oak,Poplar, Beech, Alder,Sycamore and Hornbeam, have been sourced fromthe original supplier andbefore being planted wereblessed by Philip Blamirethe Vicar of Weybourne.Keith Morley fromWeybourne CommunityFund said “This has been avery sad incident, thevandalism reflected badlyon the village and thesubsequent response fromthe overwhelming majorityshows how upset about iteveryone was”. The Askews have asked that a heartfelt thank-you isextended to all who generously donated or helped in any way towards therestoration and added that the response had gone a long way to restore theirfaith in human nature.Keith Morley said “The village now wants the trees to thrive and maturewithout further disturbance and for the Askews to recover from this ascompletely as they can”.

Norfolk LoreThe Manservant ofManningtree HallIn October 1879 Dr Augustus Jessop, staying at the hall, was working latein the evening in a room off thelibrary. Concentrating on the booksand papers spread across the table infront of him Jessop suddenly noticeda large white hand close to his elbow.Turning towards it he saw a largeman with his back to the fireapparently studying the books he hadbeen reading. Dr Jessop provides thisdescription of the figure:

The man’s face was turned awayfrom me but I saw his closely cutreddish-brown hair, his ear, shaved cheek, an eyebrow, thecorner of his right eye and hislarge, high cheek bone. Heappeared to be dressed in darkecclesiastical clothing.

When the doctor moved a book theman vanished but reappeared a fewminutes later. Eventually as DrJessop closed the books andprepared to go to bed the figuredisappeared completely.

In the early 1970s the steward ofMannington Hall revealed the ‘ghost’was in fact an Italian servant come toclear away the brandy decanter andglass. This appears to be supportedby members of the Purdy family ofAylsham; their grandfather was afriend of Lord Orford and the storyhanded down from him was that thatCarlo, the Italian servant, enjoyed aglass of brandy before retiring andbelieved Dr Jessop was concentratingon his work or asleep and wouldn’tnotice him taking some brandy. However this proved not to be so

after Carlo had made severalunsuccessful attempts to obtain hisnightcap.Variations of the story indicate DrJessop had perhaps enjoyed one ortwo glasses himself and a littleconfused about what he had seen.

However Dr Jessop firmly believed hehad seen an apparition andmaintained he had only been drinkingseltzer water that evening.

Gardening Rule:How to stop a dog from digging in a garden?

Start right! Never let the dog see you digging . . .Doggy see, doggy do.

hello. my name is mr h mouse.

i work the night shift at the

crabline newspaper and I need

to thank

everyone for their help.

you may remember that due to t

he chewed sparky cable problem

the crabline

big one got mad, but then my "dont buy the ca

and readers started to offer h

elp. actually he nearly bought

that cat again

when the biscuit drawer incide

be forgotten

now and the nibbling was only

very small. mind you i noticed

there has been

a change from custard creams t

o basic digestives so they may

be trying to

get at us that way. mrs w mous

e says that perhaps it might b

e good if they

stopped topping up the biscuit

drawer completely as she was

thinking of

going on a diet. i told her th

s fantastic

just as she was with her lovel

a note arrived the other day a

actually i think that might be

also among the replies there w

then there was the email from

i have to tell you that mrs w

she suggested that to stop the

The meetingwas toldhaving been told that a degree ofnimbyism had to be overcome. TheCommittee has a fundraising targetof £100,000 by the 31st October2012. However vital pledges of

financial support were received at themeeting from organisations andindividuals:

Tony Shipp, representing CromerCarnival Committee, whoattended Mondays meeting toldcheerful members that theplanning application fee of £204to apply for installation of a skatepark facility at the Meadow, wouldbe paid for by the Carnivalcommittee.Cat Plewman of Poppyland,Cromer Town Council and now amember of Cromer Skate ParkCommittee told members that the£400 donated by Cromer TownCouncil to part fund the annualone-day skate park event, willnow hopefully be transferred toour Cromer Skate Park fund.Because of the number of youngpeople involved in this campaign,it was pointed out that thecommittee will need eightenhanced CRB checks. Crabline Issue 243 reported on thesuccess of Mundesley Skate Park andmade the challenge C’mon Cromer. Now Cromer adults and young peoplehave been fighting for a skate park, literally for generations.  There hasalways been general support for apark, but seems to diminish when itgets down to detail!  However therehas been an unofficial temporarywheeled park operating successfullyon the hard standing at North LodgePark now for many weeks. The parkis very well attended and prompted arenewed efforts to establish apermanent site in the town.At a recent meeting Cromer TownCouncil received a passionaterepresentation from young peopleand their supporters which resultedin an unanimous vote of support fromthe council.  More recently theDistrict and County Council haveidentified and promised an idealcentral site pending planningpermission. All of which adds to themomentum developed by the SkatePark Committee. Details of theirinaugural meeting are reportedelsewhere in this issue. CP

Our JessOver the ten years that we lived inCromer we let out a room, or two, tolodgers working in the CromerSeaside Special. One young lady Lisand I always enjoyed having in thehouse was dancer Jessica Bedford. InJess’s own words “Iwas your bestlodger.” Please donot tell her, but Iagree. On Saturday April21st Jess marriedAdam Jenkins, another dancer inCromer’s SeasideSpecial, who alsolodged with us acouple of years ago.

The wedding washeld in her hometown of Chester, in the Red House, overlooking the river, with over 80very jolly guests, including manyperformers from past ‘End Of ThePier’ shows. We have always had very fondmemories ofJess stayingwith us. Irecall drivingher toCambridgeonce, to dropher at thestation there; Iwas heading toStanstead topick up family.I wonderedwhat we wouldtalk abouthoweverneither of usdrew breaththe whole way, much wasdiscussedabout mydriving, as atthe time she was learning to drive.

Her family are wonderful people aswell, so all in all it was an honour tobe guests at the best wedding wehave been to for a very, very longtime.Despite being one of those peoplewho always gets in the last word,Jess is a darling girl, who now works

training fellow dancers on cruiseliners, which Adam does too.Jess’s 3 little nieces were brilliantattendants with the eldest lookingvery like her lovely Auntie.

Both Lis and Ihave fondmemories ofJess and Adamas lodgers andwish thiswonderfulcouple all thevery, very bestfor a long andhappy marriage.

CRABBEAT

with PC Lorna LawThe Great Outdoors!

While walking the Crabbeat inCromer, I was stopped by a groupof young people. Gary, Bradley,Emily and Harmony, who wantedto know where they could find aSkate Park in Cromer. They live in North Walsham andhave great fun learning newskateboard skills, making new

friends and more important beingoutdoors. When I was young I wasoutdoors all day! They had visited Mundesley andSheringham, Skate Parks and werevery surprised not to find oneavailable in Cromer.

In 2004 the Chief Medical Officer inEngland recommended that:‘Children and young people should

achieve a total of at least 60minutes of moderate intensityphysical activity each day.’‘At least twice a week this shouldinclude activities to improve bonehealth, muscle strength andflexibility.’

The report also urged localauthorities to take steps tomake neighbourhoods andcommunities more ‘ActivityFriendly’ by facilitating pleasantand safe environments forwalking, cycling and playing. It is important to encourageoutdoor activities, which Ibelieve should include all Town’shaving their own Skateboardpark as well as an area for theyounger children to play.I would love to hear your viewson the subject.Bye for now PC Lorna [email protected]© Elva Gledhill 2012

You willnot be left totally onyour own, GirlguidingUK will provide a supportnetwork for you with resources, courses and a mentor. In return youget to have lots of fun, learn newthings and get paid withsmiles and happy faces.

Cod stocksbelowacceptablelevelCod stocks fell below an acceptablelevel in Crabline Issue 243. Readersfrom across the Crabline Cod Fisheryhave been contacting the office toask if the popular competition hadbeen raised to extreme difficultybecause they couldn’t Spot the Cod.One particularly determined groupgave a series of telephone reportsfrom a pub on their search for theelusive fish. Their despatches, recorded on the office answerphone, indicated tiredness was beginning toset in later in the evening!

So a sincere apology to all the keencod spotters. As compensation thereis a comparative shoal (well two, notincluding the one attached to thisarticle) for you to find in this edition.
