Prep and Grade 6 Buddy Incursion - ‘Superhero in You’
Today the Preps and Grade 6s took part in the ‘Superhero In You’
incursion. The students explored different character strengths and
identified their own superpowers” (personal strengths).
The character strengths that we explored were the power of voice,
action, feeling, kindness, listening and thinking.
The Preps and their Grade 6 buddies enjoyed learning
alongside each other and strengthening their relationships.
Grade 1’s participated in a
series of team challenges,
experiments and games. We
focused on the importance of
being in the moment and
celebrating when we achieve
something so we came up with
a team handshake to
congratulate each other.
The preps explored what
achievement means by celebrating
the things that we used to not be
able to do but now we can! The
preps also set goals for themselves
that they would like to achieve by
the end of the year.
Gr2 students attempted to create
houses out of cards, an extremely
difficult challenge that at first seemed
impossible, however with a growth
mindset and perseverance they
eventually experienced success!
The Grade 6 students have explored the concept
of achievement through the lyrics of our
JumpStart song Champion by Carrie Underwood. We unpacked what it means to be a champion and how we can work together to achieve this.
In Grade 3 we believe ACHIEVEMENT
means working towards our personal
goals, completing tasks to the best of
our ability and using a growth mindset
when faced with challenges
"In Grade 4, while exploring the school
value achievement we worked on
giving and receiving constructive
feedback and applying it in order to
improve our work."
While focusing on the
school value of
achievement, Grade 5’s
explored a growth
mindset and the
importance of continuing
to learn and try while
attempting different
challenges individually
and in groups.
Morning specialist classes—Ready Set Learn Program
Staff here at Coatesville work very hard to ensure a differentiated curriculum for your
children. When classes have specialists at 9am, individual class teachers will be not be in
classrooms to greet your children as this valuable time is used for their planning and
preparation.
All 9am specialist classes will be greeted by specialist teachers at 8:50am in their learning
spaces. The specialist teachers will take the class to their specialist learning space after
8.57am so they are ready to begin learning at 9am.

Instrumental Lessons
Guitar, Drum Kit and Keyboard lessons have begun for the year. There is still a chance if you wish to book
your child in for any of these programs, even if you plan to begin them next term or next semester. The
instrumental program is a user pays series of group lessons delivered during school hours. Individual
lessons are also available. Enrolments for guitar and drum lessons can be made on a form stored in the
rack near the door at the front office. PMI keyboard lesson bookings can be made at
Choirs
Successful choir applicants will be informed this week. Those on the waiting list will also receive a notice
of recognition of their interest in the choir and will be included later in the year. The Senior Choir (Grades
3 – 6) will work with Ms. Ferguson and the Junior Choir (Grades 1 and 2) with Mrs. Rainford. Due to high
demand for places in the choirs, selection and ballot processes took place as planned. Congratulations
to all applicants for their enthusiasm!
Recorders
Recorder lessons in Grades 3 to 6 will begin next week. (Week 8 for Monday classes) Thank you to those
who participated in the school bulk order for recorders in Grade 3. Students who ordered and paid for
recorders have received them and have named their covers. Please ensure that recorders are also
named. Students who did not order a recorder and who do not have one at home will need to purchase
one elsewhere for use from week 7 and into Term 2.

This year's program is filled with MORE fun activities!
Recently, I took on Elizabeth's role as ArtSmart teacher and have already met some very keen and
talented students at Coatesville PS.
This term, I'm hoping to introduce students to the unusual techniques made famous by the 'Experimental
Workshop' artists of the 1930's. Students will be using tools other than the traditional brush to create
wonderful effects. Using paint containing flow medium, we will observe the flow and intermix of pour
painting, the effects of dragging and pulling string dipped in paint and create some interesting patterns
and prints with 'splatter' and 'marbling'...it will be messy but lots of fun!
Already this term, students have explored 'Optical Art' of the 60's and created an illusionary 'pop out'
hand drawing. They were also introduced to 'Spin Art' using a salad spinner to create some amazing
effects.
IMPORTANT
Parents must always sign off when picking up children after class. Children are not be permitted to leave
the art room if parent/assigned person is not present.
A little bit about myself... I am an exhibiting artist, member of the Bass Coast Artists Society and a
co-ordinator of community based and multicultural art events. I'm also a qualified children's health
professional (BA & Dip of App. Science) currently working with children in the education disability support
sector. I hold a Working With Children Chexk and also teach ArtSmart at Tucker Rd PS every
Wednesday.
