Bush Regeneration Diary — Eurong 9 th to 18 th March 1 FIDO Volunteers Bush Regeneration Diary Eurong — 9 th to 18 th March 2017 The team and a new garden changing the Eurong landscape A week of accomplishments Established a new garden if native plants at Eurong Resort transforming area to produce a more natural landscape amongst the built environment. All of the 200 plants planted out in the garden and around the busiest hub on Fraser Island (Kgari) were raised in the QPWS Eurong Nursery with assistance of FIDO volunteers 500 plants were potted up in the nursery as FIDO volunteers progressively expand the nursery capacity and variety of stock on hand that are suitable for residential areas. Continued weeding east of the Eurong toilet block and removing Brazilian nightshade, Pangola grass and Siratro planting more plants to supress weeds. Thoroughly purged the declared Green zone inside the dingo fence from the back of the toilet block The group contributed 301 hours of on-ground voluntary work. This takes no account of travel preparatory or administrative time contributed.

• EstablishedanewgardenifnativeplantsatEurongResorttransformingareatoproduceamorenaturallandscapeamongstthebuiltenvironment.

TheadvancepartyofSuzanneWilson,SuDawsonandtheFearlessLeadermadeapleasantuneventfultripfromMtCoolumtoRainbowBeachforaearlylunchbeforerollingontotheferryandcatchingaperfectlowtidetotravelupthebeach.AtEurongthefirstportofcallwasthenurserywheresomeadditionalnurserysuppliesincludingperlite,potsandfertilizerwereunloadedandanassessmentmadeofthenurserystockbeforeheadingtotheResortandsettlingintoourthirdfloorapartmentwherewecouldlookacrosstothebackofTalinga.WewereabletoconsultwithGregHiltonaboutthesitingoftheproposednewgardenbetweentheTradewindsblockandtheadministrationRestaurantblock.Theoriginallyproposedgardencouldinterferewithalotofundergroundinfrastructureincludinglinesforthedisposaloftreatedsewageeffluent.ThealternativesitewastheotherendofTradewindswheretherearenoeffluentlinestoworryabout.Aninspectionsuggestedthatthesiteleantitselftoacrescentshapedgarden.AninspectionwasthenheldoftheGreenZoneareawherewelateridentifiedSu’smysteryplantasBreynia.TheSuwentweedingandSuzannewentseedcollectingwhileFLworkedonEmailsuntilawonderfuldinnerofsalmonriceandsalads.Hoursworked:10

Theformulaforthedaywasfairlysimple.From7to12Suworkedontheareafromthetenniscourttothedingogrideliminatingandemergentweedsandanystraysmissedinprevioussweepsofthearea.TheworkwasverysystematicandthoroughFLandSuzannewenttothenurseryandspentthemorningcleaningoutthepottedplantofweeds.Manyhadlargebegonias,orgrassesandotherweedsthathadtobecutout.FLsprayedthefloorofthehardeningupareawithglyphosatebeforesettingupapalletunderthetopbenchtoplaceasmanypandanusgerminantsaspossibletofreeupbenchspace.Theworkalsoidentifiedwaystocreatemorebenchspaceandtheneedforsomerepairstotheirrigationsystem.DuringthisperiodmanyplantswereremovedfromthenurserytobegivenanewhomeinEurongvillage.WhilemostwenttothesiteofthenewResortgarden,somethatweretoolargeaspeciesforthatgardensitewerefoundhomesroundthevillagesuchasbesidethedrainageline.AfterlunchandashortrecoverytimeinthehorizontalthetriowentbacktoworkwithFLandSuzanneundertakingsomeplantingneatthelaundryandadjacenttothetenniscourtanddrainageline.Somevolunteerplantsweresalvagedfromthebuswasareaincludingseveralcasuarinasandtakentothenursery

Itwashotanddry.UnsurprisinglySuundauntedandaloneworkedinherfavouritepatchofbushcontinuingonhermissionofeliminatingallweedsfromthewesternendofherdeclaredGreenZone.SuzannewenttotheNurseryandcontinuedsortingthroughthestockandtidyingitallup.FearlessLeaderwenttoworkontheshedconcentratingonreplacingrustynailswithgalvanizedscrews.Hehadthoughtthat100countersunkwoodscrewswouldfixalloftheloosepalings.Howeverthejobwillrequiretwicethatnumberofscrews.Hethensprayedtheareaoftheproposeddemonstrationgardentominimizetheemergenceofgrasswhenthegardenisestablished.

EastonStreetandLakeAllomItwasdeterminedthatthisdayhadthebesttideoftheweektogotoLakeAllom.Thereforeitwasresolvedtoworkasplitshift—takingoffaftermorningsmoko,havinglunchatHaroldCharlesBarracksandreturningonthelowtidetoputinacoupleofhoursworkinthecooloftheafternoon.ThemorningshiftbeganwithMareetakingthemainteamdownEastonStreettocleartheareabetweenTalingaandthetoiletblockofweeds.ThemainweedsfoundandtargetedwereBraziliannightshadeandSiratro.Itwasabusychattymorningwithlotsoflaughsasthegroupclearedoutabout60metresinawidestrippfbush.FearlessLeadertookSuzannebacktothenurserywhereshecontinuedthebigtidyupandbetweendodgingtheautomaticsprinklersandaverylightshowersheassessedthestateoftheirrigationsystemtodeterminewhichnozzleswereworking.

BackattheshedF.L.preparedmanydrumsofglyphosatewhilewaitingfortheconditionstodryout.WhenhethoughtitwasOKhediscoveredhehadtowaitalittlelonger.HestartedworkjustoutsidethedingofencegateoppositeWeeronaandworkedtosprayasmuchoftheareaoutsidethefenceashadbeenreachedbythetreatedeffluent.ThemaintargetspeciesherewerealsoSiratroandBrazilianNightshadethatwererunningamok.Hisworkwasstoppedthoughbyalightsprinkleofrainsoheturnedhisattentiontootherweedsandmanuallyweededinsidethefence.

JandealingwithCoralCreeperunderaCypress.

SusetouttoestablishsitesforplantingpandanusandotherplantsinopenareasbetweenTalingaandthedingofence.ThiswillhelputilizesomeofthelargespecimensfillingthenurseryandsupressingweedsandgrassintheTalingaprecinct.Shethenturnedtoweedingtheovergrowngardenwiththewoodypeartree.

AftersmokowhilelunchitemswerebeingsortedoutthethreemenwrestledtheheavydelverintothebackofTahkaandloadedthesuppliesandotherequipmenttogouptoLakeAllom.

TherunalongthebeachwaspleasantbutF.L.notedthatalloftherocksatPoyunganandYidneyhadbeenexposedbytheheavyseasinjustoneweek.Sevendaysearliertheywerecoveredinsandandhehadhedrivenrightoverthem.

AfterarelaxedlunchatLakeAllomthegroupmadeareturnonalowertidebutdecidedtolookinattheHappyValleydumptoassesshowsomeofthematuretreesatthenurserymight

beusedtoscreenofthedumpfromtheroad.Howeverbeforewecouldreachthedumpacarpulledup.GemmaCroninhadrecognizedFearlessLeader.Hercarwasfullwithdaughterson-in-lawandchildren.TherewasaveryfriendlyandsupportiveexchangeandGemmaandherfamilywouldliketobeinvolvedinfutureFIDOworkprogramsbecauseshenowlivesontheisland.ShewillbenotifiedinadvanceofanyworkpartiesFIDOissendingtotheisland.Itwasaveryfortuitousencounter.

Monday,13thMarchTheGreatGardenandSouthernLakes

Themorningsessionwastheresultofgreatplanningandpreparation.Itstartedat7.00amandfinishedat12.00.Inthattimeahugecooperativeeffortwithoutanyonebarkingordersorissueingdirectivesallcametogethertoproduceanamazingresult.Theplantswerelaidoutinageneralconcept;theedgeofthegardenwasdefinedandthesoilusedtobuildupthegarden.Whilethiswasgoingoncardboardwasbeingcollectedfromthekitchenandsoakedinbucketsandbins.

Layingoutthegardenbeforeplanting

Allofthetimeholeswerebeingdugforthe100plantsthathadbeenlaidout.Thiswasthoughtnottobedenseenoughsomorestockwasgatheredfromthenurserybringingupto120plantsaltogetherbasedonthenumberofpots.Suzanneadvisedthat18specieswereplantedinthenewgarden.Anothersevenspecieshavebeenplantedinotherplacesnearby.Itisalreadyanimpressivedisplaybecausesomuchofthestockisalreadyadvanced.

Allofthetimesomeonewaswateringtheholesandsoakingthesandtoovercomethewaterrepellenceresultingfromtheextremelydryconditions.Onlythenafterallofthesepreliminarypreparationsbeendoneanddidtheactualtheplantingbegin.

Onceworkbeganeveryonewasfullyengaged

Whilethewomensatontheirtailsestablishingeachplantintoitsallottedandbynowverywellwateredholewithwatercrystals,themaleswentonahuntforbrushmattingtocoverthecardboardblanket.TheyfoundoneusefulsourceinProblemCornerandtheprunings

fromthedemonstrationGardenbutthereisstillmuchmorecoverofthenewgardenisneededtosuppressweedsandtostopthecouchgrassfromcomingthrough.

ProudMareewiththetaskalmostcomplete

Itwasamostsatisfyingandrewardingmorningandisalreadydrawingveryfavourablecommentsfromstaffandvisitors.

Afternoontourwasarevelationoftheimpactoftheseveredryweather.NearbyMaryboroughhasrecorditsdriestyearyetfor2016buttheextremelydryJanuaryandFebruaryareseeinganumberoftreesdieinthebush.ThemostcommonofthesewasbrushboxandtoalesserextentMonotocca.HowevertherearealsoafewscribblygumsandBanksiaonthethresholdofdeathoralreadydead.

WhilewewereenjoyingtheSouthernLakesandtheDilliVillageswimmingholeSucontinuedwithherplancarryingonmoreweedingandalsosomesupplementaryplantingintheEastonStreetareaadjacenttoTalinga.

Tuesday,14thMarchVariousTasksinEurong

Varioustaskswereassignedtotheteamforthedaywhichwashothumidandenervatingturningtolightshowersinthelateafternoon.ItwassoenervatingthateveryonewashappytooptnottogoontheafternoonoutingthatwasproposedtobeawalkinandouttoWabbyLakes.

MareeandAshleighwentonasurveyoftheweedproblemsinSingaporeAlleyandResidentialValleyidentifyingtasksforthemorrow.

SuzannetookDorothyandJantoworkatthenursery.Theypottedupabout70BanskiaintotubestockandasimilarnumberofGlochidions(Cheesetrees)intotubesthatwereprickedoutoftraysandplantedintotubes.

Themalemembersoftheteamsetaboutplantinginfiveadditionallargerplantsontheterracebelowthenewcrescentgardenwheretheirheightwouldnotbeaproblem.TheyalsoplantedmoreplantsinthegardenbesidetheLaundry.AftersmokoMarkandJohnE.wentonrubbishrunsandgatheredmorebrushmattingmaterial.ThentheFearlessLeaderreturnedtodealingwiththeweedsoutsidetheDingofence.ThesprayingthreeweeksearlierhadknockedbackmanyweedsbuttheCoralcreeperhadn’tyetsuccumbedsoanothersprayingwastimely.Hepumpedout30litreoverabout60metresextendingwestofthepedestriangatebutbynoonhehadanother20litresandabout45metrestogowhenhefeltheneededabreakfromtheheavyworktoreturntoitonthemorrow.

Itrainedovernight.Therainwasmostwelcomebutthe11.6mmstillleavesanenormousrainfalldeficitinEurongandelsewhereontheisland.Itlookedominousinthemorningsoanythoughtoffinishingthesprayingwascancelledalthoughitdidn’trainatallduringthedaywhichremainedhotandhumid.

Itwasanotherdayofmultipletasks.Withthreegroupsworkingondifferentpartsofthevillage.TheNurseryteamofSuzanne,Ashleigh,andJohnE.setoffearlyworkeduntil12.30becauseintheflurryofactivitypickingthemupbyotherswasoverlooked.Suhadlodgedsomeplantordersovernightandthesewereloadedandtakenbacktostartfillinginsomeblankspacesonthelandscape.34plantswereloadedtobeplanted.

SuzanneandCo,alsomeasuredupthenurserytoseehowthebenchspaceinthehardeningupareamightbeexpanded.170cmofshadeclothshouldcoverthearea.Thereareatleastfivedownnipplesintheoverheadirrigationsystemthatneedreplacing.Thegalvanized25meshontheexistingbenchesisapprox93cmwide.Ifthebenchesaretobeextendedanother5.5metresinthreesectionsalreadycoveredbytheoverheadsprinklersystem.Theeasterntableintheshadehousecanbeextended1.5metresatoneendand1.2metres,whilethewesternbenchcanbeextended2.8metres.FourpiecesofpipeandsixBesserblockswereneededforeachextension—4of1.8metres,4of1.5metresand4of3.1metres.Anadditional3

piecesof90cmwereneededtositontheBesserblocksateachend.Atotalof27metresofpipeisneededcutintotherightlengthsandinadditiontotheshadeclothaminimumof18besserblocks.

Theythengotverybusywithpottingup320plantsfrom“thetunnel”intolargerpots.160Midyimswerepottedintotubes.ThesewerefromseedsplantedoutinOctober.160crinumlilieswerepottedupinto120mmpots.DuringthelongmorningtheyreceivedaverywelcomevisitfromandMarionAndersonwhoweresurprisedatthethroughputinthenursersincetheysawitwithFINIAlessthantwoweeksearlier.

BackintheResortValleytheFearlessLeaderdeliveredtheplantstoSuandwasthenengagedforthenextfivehoursinplantingoutthestockobtainedfromthenursery.About10plantswerelocatedinthebuswasharea.Thisisoneofthelargergapsinthetreelinesurroundingtheresort.Itwashotandhumidandalotofwaterhadtobecarriedbybucketstoensurethattheplantswerewellwatered.Thelargerplantswerepandanus,somecreepersandaQuinine.TheythenturnedtheirattentiontoareabetweentheshopandtheDingoFencewheretheFearlessLeaderremovedmanuallysomeoftheregeneratedGreenPanictomakespaceforthenewplantsthatincludedalargebanksiafivePandanus,amysteryunidentifiedplantthatturnedupinthenursery,somefanflowers,goatsfootcreeperandBluetongue.Itishopedtotransformthisentrancetothevillagetoamorenaturalareaastheygrowtaller.

Ithadrainedalittleovernightandtheweatherlookedominousbutluckilyitdidn’trainandthisallowedF.L.tofinishthedispersalofanother20litresofglyphosateontheCoralCreeperandotherweedsonthenorthernsideoftheDingoFencebringatotalof70litressprayedonthisareathathadbeenleftofftheradarfortoolongbutwhichhadstartedtogetawayasaresultofthetreatedeffluentdispersal.

Therosterchangedtoday.MarkfoundhimselfhelpingSuzanneattheNursery.Theyreceivedavisitfromthelocalstoday,DavidandMarionAndersonwhoweresurprisedtodiscoverhowmanyplantshadbeenshiftedoutofthenursery.

Suwasbusyaseverdoingacomprehensivejobofweeding.HowevershehadsomeassistancefromtheFearlessLeaderwhohelpedherdosomeplantinginthebuswasharea.Thisisoneoftheareaswherethetree-linedlandscapeisbrokenandwheresheaimstofillinwithnewplanting.TheotherareasheisworkingonisoppositeWeeronawherethePangolahasoutcompetedallofthepreviousattemptstoestablishplantsthere.

SuzanneandMarkworkedinthenurseryandcontinuedtopotupmoresmallplantsintotubesorlargerpotsandtotidyuptheareain

anticipationofthenexttripwhenitisproposedtoincreasethenurserybenchspace.Theymeasureduptherequirementstoextendtheareatotakefulladvantageoftheexistingoverheadsprinklersystem.

SuandAshlieghcontinuedweedremovalinthebuswashareauntilsmokoafterwhichtheyfocussedonplacingtheremainingplantsfromthepotsbroughtdownfromthenurseryintheground.

Outing:Therewasalotofproductiveworkdoneduringtheday’safternoonouting.WhilesomewaternymphsheldanimmersedD&MconferenceandanamelesspersonadmiredthestatuesquebackpackerstheF.L.didaroundofhismonitoringstationstakingphotosoftheLakeMcKenzie(Boorangoora)beachtoshowthevolumeofusageandthelowwaterlevels.

ItwasalongroughdrivetotheWabbyLakestopcar-park.HeretherewasahealthygrowthofAbrusintheroundaboutinthemiddleofthecarpark—theonlyknowoutbreakofAbrusoutsidetheHappyValley–Yidneyareabutfortunatelytherewerenoflowersorseeds.Thespraywasmissingbutthebaseofthelargerplantswerelocatedandtreatedbythecutthecutandpaintmethod.Theareawillneedtobetreatedagainonlynexttimethesmallemergentplantsneedtobesprayed.
