2020 Clothing Workshop

The Des Moines County Clothing Committee invites you to attend the 2020 Clothing Workshop open to all 4th - 12th graders on February 22, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Extension Office in West Burling-ton. The inclement weather date for this workshop is scheduled for the following Saturday, February 29th.

Lunch will be provided as well as some awesome door prizes.

The committee strongly encourages those interested to bring a friend, as well as a parent, leader, or adult mentor to this exciting opportunity sponsored by the Des Moines County Clothing Committee.

The workshop will explore what your “Pop Colors” are; if you are a Glamour Girl, a Movie Star, or a Rock Star; accessories that are right for you; and the latest skincare and make-up trends. Feel free to bring some spending money, as the group will take what is gained and learned, on field trips to Original Cyns, GYPSI, Hopefully Yours, and Myrtle Vera’s Hallmark located in downtown Burlington.

Registration is due by February 12, 2020, to attend the workshop. To register, contact the Des Moines County Ex-tension Office at 1-800-914-1914 and leave your name and your height. Non-4-H members must complete a medi-cal release form prior to participating in the workshop.

For more information on the 2020 Clothing Workshop, please call the Des Moines County Extension Office and ask for Mary.

We look forward to seeing you on the 22nd!

Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a 4-H leadership and civic engagement program for high school youth (completed grades 9-12 at the time of the trip). Each summer teens gather at the National 4-H Confer-ence Center to learn what it means to be a strong leader in their community, country, and world.

Objectives for the program are: to strengthen communication, leadership, and other citizenship skills on a na- tional level; to understand the importance of civic and social responsibilities as they relate to the development of better citizens and leaders; to exchange ideas, practice respect, and form friendships with other youth from di- verse backgrounds; and to experience hands-on learning using the historical backdrop or our nation’s capi-tal city, Washington D. C. These objectives are met through pre-trip education, speakers, workshops, daily ex-cursions to view national sites, a day at the Capitol with elected officials, and a delegate designed and imple-mented action plan. Plus Citizenship Washington Focus brings together 4-H members from across the coun-try.

CWF is scheduled for June 19-27, 2020. Deadline to register is Friday, January 17, 2020. Space is limited to the first 48 delegate registrations. Trip cost is $1850. This includes all lodging, travel, tours, and a majority of the meals. A $650 non-refundable deposit is due at time of registration. The remaining balance is two pay-ments of $600 each due by March 15 and April 15, 2020.

Contact the Des Moines County Extension Office if you are interested in this trip as financial assistance is availa-ble from the Des Moines County 4-H Foundation.

Registration can be found on the CWF webpage at: www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/cwf

Again, for the 2019-2020 4-H year...ALL youth exhibiting livestock, 4th -12th grade, must be YQCA (Youth for

the Quality Care of Animals) certified. This is an annual certification. Online classes open on January 1st and must

be completed by July 1st.

It is a requirement that all beef, bucket bottle, dairy cattle, dairy goat, meat goat, poultry, rabbit, sheep, and swine

exhibitors are YQCA certified annually to exhibit at the Des Moines County Fair and the Iowa State Fair.

Coupon Codes will be mailed to each family, to offset the $12.00 per member cost of the online course, thanks to

the generosity of F & M Bank & Trust. YQCA help sheets will be included in the mailing.

There are four (4) ways to obtain your coupon code and help sheet:

1. Stop by the Des Moines County Extension Office Monday - Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., or on Fri

day between 8:00 a.m. - noon.

2. Call Mary, at the Des Moines County Extension Office, at 1-800-914-1914.

3. Call Mary on her cell phone at 319-931-3259. If there is no answer, please leave a voicemail!

4. Email Mary at [email protected]

The Coupon Codes are not only for our Des Moines County 4-H members, but our Des Moines County FFA

members as well.

***New for the 2019-2020 4-H/FFA year...ALL youth are required to turn in a copy of their YQCA certifica-

tion certificates to the Des Moines County Extension Office. These can be emailed or sent by US postal service,

but there needs to be copy on file for every market livestock exhibitor. Without a copy of this certificate on file,

the 4-H and/or FFA member will not be allowed to participate in the 2020 Des Moines County Fair or Iowa State

Fair. No Questions Asked!

The winter months, snow days, early outs from school, etc. are perfect times to sit down in front of a computer

and to get this completed...sooner rather than later. All you need are your 4hOnline credentials to log in at

yqca.org to get this done.

On behalf of the Des Moines County 4-H and FFA programs, we would like to take this opportunity to thank

F & M Bank & Trust for their generous donation, in offsetting the cost of the YQCA requirement, and for their

continued support of the Des Moines County Fair and youth of our area!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO OUR CLOVER KIDS AND THEIR FAMILIES!!!

As the New Year begins, I can proudly say that the Clover Kids Program is growing by leaps and bounds!

As of the mailing of this newsletter, the Des Moines County Clover Kids are 79 members strong and still

growing. If you know of someone who has not re-enrolled for the 2019-2020 4-H year, please encourage

them to do so today. Our 4-H insurance does not go into effect until the youth are enrolled.

The winter months are a wonderful time to put those Christmas gifts into action or to experiment with

crafts, cooking, etc. Whatever it is you are doing to fill your time, lets think ahead to how we can turn

those projects into something we can exhibit as Clover Kids projects at the fair! Whether it’s painting a

picture, making a tie blanket, taking pictures, trying out a new recipe, whatever it is…we can make it into

a project!

The following Crunchy Apple Roll-Up is a recipe from the Kids in the Kitchen curriculum geared towards

Clover Kid aged youth. It is a recipe that has been used in several afterschool programs throughout Des

Moines County. If your son or daughter loves to help out in the kitchen and you are looking for a simple,

inexpensive recipe for them to try; this recipe is for you! For youth trying new recipes, of any age, we al-

ways recommend adult supervision.

Enjoy!!!
