The Cleveland Orchestra Franz Welser-Möst, conductor
mOZART Symphony No. 41 (“Jupiter”)STRAUSS An Alpine Symphony
Richard Strauss was an avid outdoorsman, and An Alpine Symphony is the vivid musical depiction of a day spent climbing an Alpine mountain, replete with scenic meadows, a dazzling view from the summit, and a sudden, violent storm. It is one of the most spectacular – and spectacularly challenging to perform – orchestral tone poems ever written, and it employs a massive orchestra of some 125 musicians. [Popular culture note: in 1981, a recording of An Alpine Symphony made with the Berlin Philharmonic became the first compact disc pressing.]

This special concert marks the opening of the first phase of CWRU’s Maltz Performing Arts Center. Broadcast live on television from the newly renovated Silver Hall, the event is also the official opening performance of Violins of Hope Cleveland, a unique community collaboration of concerts, education programs, exhibitions, and learning events. This collaboration is centered around a group of Holocaust-era violins from around the world, some with the Star of David on the back and others with names and dates inscribed within the instrument. These extraordinary instruments serve as testaments to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of music to lift hearts in even the most horrific of circumstances.
This event is presented by Case Western Reserve University in collaboration with Violins of Hope Cleveland.
To learn more about this community collaboration and to see a complete list of related community and education events, including an exhibition of the instruments at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage from October 1, 2015 through January 3, 2016, visit violinsofhopecle.org or maltzmuseum.org.

mAhLER Symphony No. 3
Mahler insisted that a symphony “must be like the world, it must embrace everything!” With his Third Symphony, he did just that, creating a “great hymn to the glory of every aspect of creation.” Mahler wrote into music what the great outdoors had taught him in long summer hikes across mountains and meadows, what he’d learned of humanity on earth and angels in heaven. And it ends dramatically in one of the most beautiful slow movements ever written.

When Richard Strauss led the first performance of Also sprach Zarathustra in 1896, no one could have imagined that its opening fanfare would become known worldwide as the default music soundtrack for all things to do with space travel, thanks to its use in Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Inspired by the treatise by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, Strauss’s tone poem grapples with life’s big questions. Franz Welser-Möst explores the meaning of faith and belief by pairing two composers whose works, separated by nearly a century, provide very different perspectives. Messiaen was devout, and his music shines with his embrace of God and creation in a way that almost seems evangelistic. Verdi’s masterpiece of sacred music, while overtly religious, is more conflicted, more ambiguous. Sponsor: Squire Patton boggs (US) LLP

Richly orchestrated with melodies brimming with emotion, this work is made up of three movements, all in various dance styles. “Kavakos plays [Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1] like one born to it, with every technical challenge fearlessly met and the emotional trajectory unwaveringly delineated ... a real white-knuckle ride, thrilling in its precision and panache.” — The Guardian (UK)

One of Israel’s oldest and most influential cultural institutions, the Israel Philharmonic was founded on the eve of World War II, when the Polish star violinist Bronislaw Huberman auditioned leading Jewish musicians across Europe and procured them lifesaving jobs. When the nation of Israel was founded in 1948, the Palestine Symphony became the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the country’s national orchestra. Today, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra is an eloquent voice for peace as well as Israel’s powerful cultural ambassador. Its renowned Music Director, Zubin Mehta, leads the orchestra in this highly anticipated Severance Hall performance.

Perhaps his greatest tribute to Beethoven was his resolve to write a grand symphony with the breadth and profundity of his musical idol’s, and his Ninth Symphony was the result. Julien Brocal appears as part of Maria João Pires’s Partitura Project, a program designed to create opportunities for young musicians to share the concert platform with well-known artists, encouraging the transmission of knowledge from one generation of pianists to the next, and introducing audiences to these upcoming artists.
Acclaimed as one of the greatest pianists of our time, Maria João Pires is an artist who combines exquisite stylistic refinement with a remarkable ability to express the intellectual complexities and spiritual depths of music. As a performer, her vast, nuanced emotional range and tone encompass a dizzying variety of intensities, from an almost imperceptible lightness to an imposing monumentality. She makes a rare appearance in Cleveland for an all-Beethoven evening.
