Rachmaninoff must have been an incredible romantic — when speaking of his unabashedly passionate Second Symphony, he wrote, “What I try to do when writing down my music is to make it say simply and directly what is in my heart.” Its soaring melodies have made it a perpetual hit since it was first composed. (Pop culture note: the theme from its famous third movement inspired the Eric Carmen hit “Never Gonna Fall In Love Again.”)

RAVEL Le Tombeau de Couperin SAINt-SAËNS Cello Concerto No. 1SChMItt Suite from La Tragédie de Salomé*RAVEL Boléro

It begins softly. A single snare drum. Then, a flute with a sensual melody. Gradually, each instrument joins in, one after another, until the entire orchestra is playing in unison through the work’s final dissonant climax. Boléro highlights a concert of music by French composers featuring Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No. 1, considered by many composers to be the greatest of all cello concertos.

Dvořák traveled to america in the 1890s, and this wild new country thrilled him. He admired the beauty of african american spirituals, and was fascinated by Native american traditions. When describing his “New World” symphony, he said, “i tried to write only in the spirit of those national american melodies,” but his Ninth is clearly an expression of both the Old World and the new.

BEEthOVEN Symphony No. 6 (“Pastoral”)StRAUSS Symphonia domestica

Beethoven was a lover of nature who delighted in frequent hikes in the countryside surrounding Vienna. in his “Pastoral,” his most programmatic symphony, you can hear the rolling of thunder, a joyous country dance, and the calling of a shepherd’s pipes. an amusing contrast in spirit is Strauss’s musical reflection on his comfortable domestic life, which harmoniously conveys daily events and family life.

MAy 27 — Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. MAy 30 — Saturday at 8:00 p.m.

For the first time, The Cleveland Orchestra presents Strauss’s captivating opera about the enchanting nymph who must choose between the love of men and her freedom. Composed during the politically perilous period after the Nazis came to power, Daphne had deep personal significance to the composer. Strauss was well aware that the myth of Daphne was the subject of the very first opera ever composed; his own version can be seen as a guarded demand for the integrity and continuity of creativity in the face of political and worldly hindrances.
