Hello TCNJ Circle K! As this is the first newsletter of the 2014-2015 school year, I

would like to begin by welcoming the TCNJ Class of 2018 to the campus community. Specifically, I extend a warm welcome to all of the new and returning club members who have decided to make Circle K a part of their college experience. As a sophomore who still has a great deal to learn about the world inside and outside of our campus, I can say with the utmost certainty that joining Circle K was one of the best decisions I made last year. Through our organization I have gotten a chance to grow as a leader while using my time and my talents to help those in need. I have also made several strong and steadfast friendships that I am confident will remain with me well into my adulthood.

Whether you are just starting your collegiate journey or you are preparing for your final semesters before graduation, it is my sencerist wish that you take advantage of your time within our organization. Circle K is an amazing resource, not only for serving the community and for making new friends, but also for learning about the unique and utterly personal essence that makes up who you are. I encourage you to utilize this newsletter as a tool for learning about the inner workings of our club and as a means of gaining insight into the strong social bonds that are present in everything that we do.

Once again, I welcome all of our members, both old and new, to the Circle K family. I cannot wait to get to know you and I hope that your journey is a truly fulfilling one!

Yours in Caring and Service, Meg Beane-Fox, Editor

A Summer Reunion at Six Flags By: Kathleen Lok, Class of 2015

3

On Sunday, August 17th, we had our summer social at Six Flags Great Adventure! This was the perfect way to end the summer, while also kick starting the new academic year. After not seeing each other over three months, it felt great to be reunited! Last year at the social, we had some bad luck and could not get onto some of the rides because of the rain. We had to end the day early because it just kept on raining. However this year, everything worked in our favor! We started the day by going on the very thrilling wooden roller coaster, El Toro, without waiting in line at all! The rest of the morning we were able to get onto rides like Bizarro and Batman without much wait. Other rides like the SkyScreamer and Nitro had a bit of a wait, but it still was not a bad wait time.

After we had lunch, we had a special surprise waiting for us at the sea otter show, “You Otter Know.” Our International Godfather, Floyd Adams, works in the entertainment department, so he was working there.

During the show, he was able to allow us to take a group picture with Callie, an Asian small-clawed otter! She was absolutely adorable. The rest of the show was pretty entertaining since we got to see the new sea lion pup, Kona. He was pretty adorable as well.

After the show, we went on a few other rides. By the late afternoon, we were pretty exhausted from going on so many rides, so we left the park. Even though we didn’t spend the entire day, we had accomplished a lot. Overall, it was a fantastic day spent with awesome Circle K friends!

Welcome to Circle K…. Welcome new Circle K-ers! On behalf of all of our returning members,

we are thrilled to have you as part of our organization and we can’t wait to get to know you. However, we recognize that you probably have numerous questions

about our club and so, to help ease your transition into the Circle K family, we’ve created this handy article that dissects the three central tenants of our

organization: service, leadership and fellowship. Later in the month, you will be hearing a presentation from our member development chair, Lucía Menyou,

who will further explore several of the concepts introduced below. Until then, if you have any questions, feel free to ask an executive board member, a committee

chair or even a general member, and we will do our best to assist you!

.…..Welcome Home! We travel off-campus for service projects,

such as when we volunteer at a local animal shelter and

when we serve meals at the soup kitchen.

Service “We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and

forget about progress and prosperity for our community…Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for

their sakes and for our own.”- Ceasar Chavez

We participate in weekly service projects that vary

from wrapping utensils for a local soup kitchen to tutoring middle school

students.

We assist our sponsoring Kiwanis Club with their

fundraisers and their service projects. We serve meals at their

pasta dinners and we help to clean up after their yard sales.

We do fundraising for numerous charities, such as the March of Dimes, the American Red Cross and our central charity, the ELIMINATE Project, which focusses on eliminating Maternal Neonatal Tetanus from the world.

We join forces with other Circle K clubs,

such as when we participated in the District Large Scale Service Project in

Atlantic City with clubs like Stockton and

Rowan.

Leaders come in all shapes and sizes! Even without a

specific position, you can be a leader by

expressing the compassion and the kindness that helps

Circle K thrive.

5

Leadership “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn

more, do more and become more than you are a leader.”- John Quincy Adams

Fellowship “Each friend represents a world in us, a world not

born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.”- Anais Nin

You can serve as a leader in the club by serving on the executive board,

taking on a committee position or by chairing a service project.

You can serve as a leader in the district of New Jersey by running for

a board position, applying to be a committee chairperson or just getting involved in district events like District

Convention.

You can become a leader in the international board of Circle K

by serving on a committee or task force, attending

international events or even running for the international

executive board!

We implement the Buddy System, in which new members are paired with returning members to help

them better acclimate to the club.

We have numerous small-scale socials that help our members to come

together and relax: everything from apple picking sessions to movie nights

to board game marathons!

We have been known to venture off-campus for social events: our

fall trip to Grounds for Sculptures and our summer Six Flags trip are some of our more prominent ones.

We oftentimes meet up with other Circle K clubs for district-wide social events such as our Great Gatsby

themed Winter Social last year!

Service and Fellowship at the K-Family Picnic

The Cirkulation TCNJ Circle K’s Official Publication

By: Dawn Kreder, NJ District Governor, Class of 2015

This past July, 119 members of the K-Family joined together for the annual K-Family Picnic! Hosted by NJ Circle K at the Green Island Community Clubhouse in Toms River, New Jersey, Kiwanians, Key Club members, and Circle Kers partook in some service and fun games. Service for the day included cleaning up two nearby beaches and assembling coloring books for the NJ Ronald McDonald Houses.

After working hard, attendees had time to socialize and eat some delicious barbecue food. Then, came the games! With classics such as our water balloon toss and volleyball tournament, to new activities like Twister with colored powder on the board, smiles and laughter could be found wherever you looked. I can proudly say that after this event, the K-Family in New Jersey is ready for even more great things together!

Weekly Service Spotlight: Eickhoff Clean-Up An Interview with Danny Kaplan, President, Class of 2015

Question: When and where does your service project usually take place?

Answer: Eickhoff Clean-up takes place every Thursday night. We meet at 8:45pm at the left side of the salad bar in Eickhoff. You don’t even have to swipe in – just tell them you’re with Circle K for cleanup!

Question: What kind of service do you participate in during your project? What do you do?

Answer: The great thing about Eick Clean-up is that it’s a diverse project – some people clean tables, some fill napkin holders, and others clean granite. You really get to do whatever you want as long as it’s not illegal or destructive. Regardless of what task you take on, you get to mingle with your friends and Eick workers the whole time!

Question: How did you, personally, come to be involved with this service project?

Answer: I had seen other clubs doing it, which certainly piqued my interest. When I heard that Circle K was going to start doing Eick Clean-up as well, I dove in headfirst and decided to attend the first time we did it. Before I knew it, I was there every single week and chairing the project and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I can honestly say that it’s a part of my week that I look forward to.

Question: What would you consider to be the most exciting/fulfilling part of your project?

Answer: I would say there are a few, which I know is cheating. Sorry. I think the most fulfilling part for me is the fact that our work has a direct, visible pay-off. So many of us eat at Eickhoff every day and it’s nice to be able to sit down with your plate full of tasty food and know that you had a hand in making Eick as clean and pleasant as it is. Plus it’s super relaxing. Plus there’s usually free pizza and cookies at the end (definitely worth mentioning) Question: Do you have any future expectations for this service project? What kind of legacy do you hope that this project will leave with our club?

Answer: I’m extremely happy with what we have accomplished with the project and my biggest goal is for it to remain as a staple for Circle K. As far as legacy is concerned, I hope that it gives our members a sense of giving back to their campus. I would hope that it shows people the amazing sense of satisfaction that comes from helping your fellow students, leading to more on-campus projects being pursued!

Circle K Star Member: Whitney Hendrickson By: Meg Beane-Fox, Editor, Class of 2017

Two of the core characteristics that make up any valiant Circle K member are a passion for service and an enthusiasm for life. This month’s star member exhibits both of these qualities in spades, as she works tirelessly to promote our organization and to serve as a beneficial member of the TCNJ community. Whitney Hendrickson can easily be characterized as one of the most optimistic and caring members of our club. Her cheery disposition can brighten even the dreariest of circumstances, and her friendly, outgoing nature makes her a very easy individual to get to know. “Negativity” is simply not a word in Whitney’s dictionary! Likewise, Whitney’s calm and mellow nature makes her a handy person to have around during a stressful time period. When a problem

arises, Whitney keeps a level head by helping others to talk out their problems so that they may find an innovative solution to the troubles they face. Whitney’s reliable nature also means that she is more-than willing to help out Circle K in any and every way that she knows how. Whether it be serving as the anchor for our PB&J race team, or joining other members on a DLSSP trip to Atlantic City, Whitney is constantly donating her time and her talents to help our service projects come to fruition. All-in-all, Whitney’s hard-working nature means that she is a truly valuable asset, not only to Circle K, but the entirety of the college. By balancing her in-meeting service chair position, her E-Board position in an outside organization and her social life, Whitney is truly making use of every second of her college experience!

Alumni Update: Maintaining the Spirit of Circle K Taylor Dickerson, Past CKI Editor and Vice-President, Class of 2013

For ten days earlier this summer I volunteered at the National Youth Leadership Training Conference in the role of an Assistant Scout Master. Approximately eighty scouts came to learn about being a leader, developing a vision, organizing a team, and making ethical and moral decisions. They were taught and led by about thirty youth staff members and ten adult staff members. It was a fun experience for everyone involved, filled with presentations on effective leadership skills, activities designed to build

and promote teamwork, and campfires complete with songs and skits.

The photo below is of the staff with whom I had the pleasure of working. It was composed of high school students who volunteered countless hours of their time planning and preparing in order to ensure that the participants had a memorable and sometimes life-changing experience. In the picture, I am the last person on the right sitting in the middle row.
