WELCOME to . . . THE CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE

Dear Parishioners, Two weeks from now on October 9th, our parish will observe a very special Sunday, full of grace and splendor. Our parish is a host site for the visit of the historic international pilgrim statue of our Lady of Fatima. The statue will be escorted in a special Knights of Columbus Honor Guard procession into the church at 9:00 am and remain in the church sanctuary throughout the entire day until closing ceremonies at 7:00 pm. A schedule of hourly events during the visitation of the statue has been posted in the church. That same day we will have a Liturgy of Welcome to our parish for the new Archbishop of our Archdiocese. Archbishop Bernard Hebda will be principal celebrant for a Mass of Thanksgiving in the Centennial Year of the Church of St. George, at 9:15 am. During the Mass the Archbishop will bless the new confessional which was constructed due to a major donation from an anonymous and very generous benefactor. A public reception with anniversary cake follows in the community center. Closing ceremonies for the Statue at 7:00 pm will have Bishop Andrew Cozzens present as presider. He will lead evening prayer, speak on the meaning of the message of Fatima, offer benediction, and then process with the Statue of Our Lady of Fatima from the sanctuary to the awaiting van outside the front doors of the church. Bishop Cozzens will also bless the new outdoor shrine, with the figures of Our Lady and the three children of Fatima, which is located on the west side of the church. The recent project to renovate and relocate the figures of the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima with new landscaping was made possible through the generous labors of members of the Latino community within the parish. I sincerely thank the planners and the workers on this timely project which will now be in a prominent place on parish grounds, as the centennial year of Fatima is observed throughout 2017. Given all these special moments on the second Sunday of October, I sincerely hope that all of us will show a strong interest and an active, joyful participation in the ceremonies to be held throughout this very special day in the life of our parish, and also welcome with a gracious hospitality, the many visitors who are eager to join us at different times throughout the day. Gratefully in Christ, Fr. Mark Juettner, Pastor

Centennial Corner

Hello parishioners! I am excited to share what I have learned about the history of the Church of St. George. Please get in touch with me if you have any information or memories that would add to the story of our parish. My email is [email protected] and my phone number is 952-913-3136 . — Meg Flannery

St. George’s Fatima Prayer Garden

With the recent completion of St. George’s new Fatima Prayer Garden, I would like to briefly mention the history of the statues in the garden. The Fatima Prayer Garden includes statues of Our Lady of Fatima with the three young shepherd children she appeared to: Lucia dos Santos (later Sister Lucia of Fatima) and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto. St. George received these statues in 2011 from the International Community of Franciscan Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Angels as they were reorganizing their communities in the Twin Cities. Fr. Ralph and Barb O’Brien arranged for their donation to the parish. These statues are over 50 years old and thanks to recent efforts by Maria Ines Hitateguy and other volunteers, these statues have returned to their former glory and have found a new home in the center of our church. Additionally, we received statues of the archangel Raphael, found at the entrance of the church, and St. Bernadette with Our Lady of Lourdes, near the bell tower.

EMAIL CORRECTION: For some time, my email address in my column header has been incorrect. My email address is [email protected]. If you have sent me any emails about memories or corrections to my history of St. George, please resend them and I will respond promptly. Thank you for your time and responses! I look forward to hearing from you!

A Letter from the Pastor

Latino Community of St. George Completes Parenting Skills Workshop On Sunday September 11th, members of the Latino Community of St. George completed a Parenting Skills Workshop offered at our parish. Every Sunday after the Spanish Mass, several members of the community met at the library to learn principles and techniques how to build strong and effective relationships with their children. The workshop material is provided by the “Movimiento Familiar Cristiano” or “Christian (Catholic) Family Movement”, also known as “MFC”. The workshop had a duration of 7 intensive weeks, which included class sessions and home activities. Although the next workshop is scheduled for early 2017, the community is launching another program for family faith formation in Spanish, called “Ciclo Básico de Formación” (Basic Formation Cycle). Level 1 is already starting this month. Please contact Luis Rojas and Veronica Arenas for more information (763-218-1799 and 612-404-4058). Congratulations to all parents who completed the workshop: Jenny Quintana, Lucía Chavarría, Eduardo Rosales, Laura Cisneros, Pilar Sánchez, Ricardo Sánchez, María Elena González, Rafael Gómez, Felipe Ramón, Flavia Narvaez, Carmen Rodríguez, Elsa Rodríguez. We encourage you to continue building stronger families based on faith and Christian values. —- Luis Rojas & Verónica Arenas
