    A Letter from the Pastor

This column is PART 4 of a FOUR-PART SERIES. FROM THE DEPTHS OF OUR HEARTS

(Subtitle:) Priesthood, Celibacy, and the Crisis of the Catholic Church by Benedict XVI and Robert Cardinal Sarah*

Some years ago when I was serving in my first pastorate

in a small rural town, there was an active and friendly ecumenical group among the mostly Protestant clergy of that town. I attended many of its meetings. Topics of interest included the meaning of the Sacraments, for most denominations held both Baptism and Confirmation, and sometimes on the topic of what Communion meant. I was amazed at the variety of answers these Protestant clergy offered, giving me some insight into a domain that I really had never really explored or experienced much before then. One raised the issue of a married clergy and how to address the demands of ministry and marriage. He addressed me, the only single or celibate minister there who is a Catholic priest, about the demands of ministry in my life. I related my busy schedule on most days and weekends. At one point he spoke about the many advantages of the celibate minister who could not only do more with his time for the church, but also do it without the competition of other obligations, however important they were. He saw a freedom to serve and be a servant to others which priesthood of course usually provides. For a Catholic priest it is not simply, just a matter of ‘more time on the job’ but of being another Christ to the community of faith, without additional and necessary commitments to a spouse and children. While marriage is a great and noble sacrament in our tradition too and is viewed as another vocational sacrament like Holy Orders, it has its fullness of dedication that has its demands and requirements, as also does the fullness of dedication that priesthood possesses. At that time I could not see how both marriage and priesthood could come together satisfactorily in our Catholic tradition without one or the other compromised or

even injured. Without diminishing the importance and the significance of either, it seemed to me to be beyond reach to do both, in justice and in charity. At that meeting I learned from some of the Protestant ministers there and at later meetings with different ministers the various struggles they had, not only with the churches they served at, but also with their spouses and their children, who felt unattended and overlooked at times or even often. Not enough time and energy in a day for both vocations to function fully and well. Sometimes they would say that the expectations of their church communities upon their wives was way too high, not to mention the expectations of their children to measure up at every corner with exemplary conduct under the rays of a spotlight over them. I appreciated the ministers' ‘frank and candid’ remarks about the demands/requirements of church ministry and 'marriage and the family’ whenever our conversations went in that direction. I remember one who would smile at me and say that in the end, the Catholic Church appears to have come up with a better solution (to all these expectations and requirements) with a life of celibacy - to the pressing existential challenges for those like him in church ministry who are frequently at odds and exhausted in trying to serve a faith community well and yet remain healthy and happy at the same time, both at home and at work.

And so, in conclusion, it appears to me that in this insightful book, a previous Pope and a current Cardinal have aligned themselves very well together and in a timely manner, to speak to the universal church on the meritorious value of celibacy for its priests and bishops, from both a well-expressed theological understanding as well as a compassionate pastoral approach. The priests that I know value the gift of celibacy in their lives as a special Charism, given in vocational awakening stages,

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION What is Spiritual Communion? When a Catholic is unable to receive the Eucharist for one of several reasons —- breaking the one hour fast, being in a state of mortal sin, or homebound or unable to leave our home to attend Mass as in a time of pandemic —- the Church encourages us to make an act of “spiritual communion,” where we unite ourselves to God through prayer. It is a beautiful way to express to God our desire to be united with him when we are unable to complete that union in the reception of Holy Communion. Pray one of the following prayers as an Act of Spiritual Communion: My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

    LIVING JUSTLY

“You give that back right now!” How many of us have heard that line, probably more than once, as we were growing up? We come home with the trophy of what we thought was a really sweet deal, only to have our parents undo our profits by making us return the spoils. They had a different idea of what constituted a “fair trade agreement.” Justice in our dealings with others continues to be an important measure of our character, and like a good parent, God cares very much about how we treat each other and about how others treat us. God hears the cry of the poor, and answers the call of the oppressed. God’s beloved children are not to behave like bullies. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

(Fr. Juettner’s Column Continued from Page 1)

prior to Ordination and thereafter daily embraced and reinforced, which reveals the many dimensions of its power and value over the many years that celibacy is lived out generously, not selfishly. When clerical celibacy is embraced freely in the Divine Will, priests will come to know and treasure a deeper relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, whose supreme gift of the Holy Spirit will guide and sustain His priests at every moment in time. Fr. Mark Juettner Pastor

*Robert Cardinal Sarah is a Guinean prelate of the Catholic Church. A Cardinal since November 20, 2010, he was appointed the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments by Pope Francis on November 23, 2014. Born: June 15, 1945 (age 75 years) ** A final thought from the pastor addressing a future forecast: If you recall my last report on a previous book: The Next Pope, I would like now to venture a bold attempt to predict a possible and very likely candidate for the papacy, that is, when Pope Francis concludes his. Based on his performance, his distinguished appointments in the Roman Curia, and his current age, I suspect that Cardinal Robert Sarah (Guinea, West Africa) would be a strong candidate to watch closely at the next prayerful conclave of the cardinals for the election of the next Holy Father. Certainly, look for the next Pope to come from Africa! Given the context of

present clamorous times and the tremendous impact and voice of the universal Roman Catholic Church in the world, you might just be able to say today, along with Holy Mother Church: “Black Popes Matter!”

FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST COMMUNION We are happy to announce that our students who were preparing to receive their sacraments last year have completed their sacramental preparation. Congratulations to the children who made their First Reconciliation last Wednesday. We also congratulate

Congratulations and blessings to the children who are receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time on on Sunday, October 25th at a special Mass. May you always know how much Jesus loves you and may you come often to receive His precious gift!

Thank you to Lisa Mevissen, Patrick McCabe, Nuriel Abdenur, and Father Juettner who have done such a beautiful job preparing our students for this essential Sacrament. Thank you to everyone who helped with the retreat and preparations for the Mass!
