FFFAAARRREEEWWWEEELLLLLL FFFAAATTTHHHEEERRR DDDAAANNN … yes, this time he really is leaving!!

Father Dan, The parish family of St. Cecilia’s wishes you well as you ‘officially’ retire! We thank you for all you have done for us and want you to know how much you will be missed. You have touched us spiritually, helped us grow closer to Jesus and brought us closer together as the Catholic Community of St. Cecilia’s. We pray that you enjoy this special time in your life and that God may continue to bless you as you begin this new journey.

Well my time as your pastor has come to an end … I was asked recently what I had accomplished in my last five plus years here, so the things that came to mind right away – (always the accountant) all the bills are paid. When I came to St. Cecilia’s I inherited a debt of $880,000. $520,000 has been paid off – of that $425,000 paid the bank loan in full. Additional payments have been made monthly to reduce the debt to the Diocese. The balance owed to the Diocese of Metuchen is $360,000. Currently, as of June 30, 2013, there is $365,000 in savings & checking. Secondly I thought, what does one see when they initially come to St. Cecilia Church? A newly paved parking lot, landscaping around the church, refurbished stucco, new cement walkways, the front doors were refurbished, repairs to the leaking roof in the church, replating of our chalices and ciborium broken stain glass windows have been repaired, more efficient lighting has been installed and the parish hall stairwells and classrooms have been painted. A new hot water heater and a new more efficient furnace has been installed, new bookcases for the Religious Ed. library, tables and chairs for the parish hall, two A/C units for the chapel and classrooms, two A/C units for the parish office and Religious Ed. Rooms. There have been new vestments purchased over the years with matching sanctuary banners as well as new altar linens for all liturgical seasons. All of this and more was accomplished because of your generosity to the parish. While on the topic of your generosity, we can’t forget your generosity to our brothers and sisters who were affected by the earthquake in Haiti, the tsunami in Japan, and of course our own very Hurricanes Irene & Sandy. What good and generous people you are! Of course there is more to this parish then money, just look at how many Scripture programs we have we had! Every Tuesday night and Friday mornings we have had Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament; there have been parish missions and evenings of reflection for men and women. We also added a New Life Retreat and an adapted New Life Retreat for our Confirmation candidates, a new Family Catechesis program for our Religious Education Program and parish healing masses. The Knights of Columbus has grown into a strong organization of Catholic men who make their presence known not only in the parish but also in the local community. There is the Knitting Niche, Coffee Time, L.I.F.T., Evangelization, the Columbiettes, and ongoing donations to South Brunswick’s Social Services thru food collections. How about the Prayer Garden or the Last Supper Table on Holy Thursday, The Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday, and the addition of Christmas trees to the sanctuary during Christmas? Did you remember the original corner stone of the church has been relocated as the base for the statue of St. Cecilia? All of the above are facts. What has had the most meaning to me are your comments confirming that I helped bring Jesus to you. Be it by my homilies, confession, or being there when you needed someone - I was happy to hear you say, “You challenged me!” “You brought me out of the pew to be a person who has gotten involved.” “I’ll miss you.” Or the parishioner, who while visiting an upset relative in the hospital, placed their hand on the head of the sick relative and prayed “Come Holy Spirit” and calmness came over the patient. My coming to St. Cecilia’s revitalized my ministry, Thank you! To my parish staff, I thank you! I know if I listed your names you would have edited them out. (He’s right, we would have.) My Irish mother always said never say goodbye, it is too final – instead I’ll see you soon.

Father Dan Finally I say to all of you...

Pope John Paul II to be canonized! Pope Francis cleared John Paul II for sainthood on Friday, approving miracles attributed to the late pontiff. Pope John Paul II's first approved miracle was the healing of a French nun, Sister Marie Simon-Pierre. Her recovery from Parkinson’s disease after Pope John Paul II's first approved miracle was the healing of a French nun, Sister Marie Simon-Pierre. Her recovery from Parkinson’s disease after praying for the late pontiff's intersession offered no medical explanation, according to the Vatican. The healing was confirmed as a miracle just six months after the pope's death in 2005. The second miracle is said to have occurred on May 1, 2011 – the night of John Paul’s beatification ceremony in St. Peter’s Square – and was the healing of a Costa Rican woman.

Pope Francis issues his first encyclical!

Pope Francis has completed the encyclical begun by Pope Benedict entitled:

LUMEN FIDEI - Light of Faith

Pope Francis, in reference to it begun by Pope Benedict said it was a “four-handed project”

A significant excerpt:

“ In the family, faith accompanies every age of life, beginning with childhood: children learn to trust in the love of their parents. This is why it is so important that within their families parents encourage shared expressions of faith which can help children gradually to mature in their own faith. Young people in particular, who are going through a period in their lives which is so complex, rich and important for their faith, ought to feel the constant closeness and support of their families and the Church in their journey of faith.”

Preparations speed up as World Youth Day nears – July 23-July 28

“Go and make disciples of all nations!” (cf. Mt 28:19)

Greeting of Pope Francis: “Dear young friends, I greet all of you with great joy and affection. I am sure that many of you returned from World Youth Day in Madrid all the more “planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith” (cf. Col 2:7). This year in our Dioceses we celebrated the joy of being Christians, taking as our theme: “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Phil 4:4). And now we are preparing for the next World Youth Day, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in July 2013. Before all else, I invite you once more to take part in this important event. The celebrated statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooking that beautiful Brazilian city will be an eloquent symbol for us. Christ’s open arms are a sign of his willingness to embrace all those who come to him, and his heart represents his immense love for everyone and for each of you. Let yourselves be drawn to Christ! Experience this encounter along with all the other young people who will converge on Rio for the next World Youth Day! Accept Christ’s love and you will be the witnesses so needed by our world.”

Camp St. Cecilia

Becoming Disciples –“Fientes Discupli” How awesome was God’s Word to us during Camp St. Cecilia - “Becoming Disciples”, has been repeated over and over again – in this “Year of Faith”. We, the campers and team members have re-committed our lives to the Lord seeking to follow Jesus as we journey toward heaven. This year’s Camp included 86 Campers, 100 junior counselors, and 15 Moms/Adults Leaders. Thank you to all who donated time, prayers and items

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading 1 Dt 30:10-14

Moses said to the people: “If only you would heed the voice of the LORD, your God, and keep his commandments and statutes that are written in this book of the law, when you return to the LORD, your God, with all your heart and all your soul. “For this command that I enjoin on you today is not too mysterious and remote for you. It is not up in the sky, that you should say, ‘Who will go up in the sky to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?’ Nor is it across the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will cross the sea to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?’ No, it is something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out.” Responsorial Psalm Ps 69:14, 17, 30-31, 33-34, 36, 37

R. Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live. I pray to you, O LORD, for the time of your favor, O God! In your great kindness answer me with your constant help. Answer me, O LORD, for bounteous is your kindness: in your great mercy turn toward me. R. Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live. I am afflicted and in pain; let your saving help, O God, protect me. I will praise the name of God in song, and I will glorify him with thanksgiving. R. Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live. “See, you lowly ones, and be glad;; you who seek God, may your hearts revive! For the LORD hears the poor, and his own who are in bonds he spurns not.” R. Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live. For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. The descendants of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall inhabit it. R. Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live.

Reading 2 Col 1:15-20

Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him.

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he himself might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven.

Gospel Lk 10:25-37

There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” He replied to him, “You have answered correctly;; do this and you will live.” But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn, and cared for him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’ Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

July 14, 2013 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time “…go and do likewise.” LUKE 10:37

This was Jesus’ simple command to all of us at the end of the Good Samaritan story. How do we do “likewise?” By sharing our skills…By reaching into our pockets when financial help is needed…By taking the time to help when we are needed, not when it’s convenient for us.

Stewardship Prayer

Fill Our Hearts Dear Heavenly Father, We ask you to grant to us compassionate hearts; hearts rich with your love, embraced by your compassion. Grant us generous hearts: Hearts that never count the cost; hearts that seek to serve and not be served. Grant us hearts that love peace: Hearts that promote truth and justice, transform hatred and anger, and seek unity and reconciliation. Grant us hearts of a steward: Hearts that are filled with gratitude, eager to share, and long to give back to you. Grant us hearts filled with your Spirit: Hearts open to conversion, filled with hope, and on fire with your Word. We pray this in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Human Life Is Sacred

Science and Ethics

Pope Benedict XVI has stated, “I feel the duty to affirm yet again that not all that is scientifically possible is also ethically licit.

Technology, when it reduces the human being to an object of experimentation, results in abandoning the weak subject to the arbitration of the stronger. To blindly entrust oneself to technology as the only guarantee of progress, without offering at the same time an ethical code that penetrates its roots in that same reality under study and development, would be equal to doing violence to human nature with devastating consequences for all.

The contribution of scientists is of primary importance. Together with the progress of our capacity to dominate nature, scientists must also contribute to help understand the depth of our responsibility for man and for nature entrusted to him” (February 12, 2007 – Address to the International Congress on Natural Moral Law).

St. Cecilia’s Youth Ministry Open to all 9th- 12th grade high school students. Newcomers are always welcome. We meet the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month

from 7-9pm in the church basement. The youth ministry of St. Cecilia’s thrives on the celebration of

Jesus Christ, strives to serve our community both within the parish and out, encourages others to establish a relationship with Jesus

Christ and desires to create a family in Christ with our members so all will grow in their Catholic faith.

K of C St. Cecilia’s Council Raises $4,800 Through Pancake Breakfast

to Help Families Affected by May 31 Plane Crash

On Sunday, June 30, 2013, Knights of Columbus St. Cecilia’s Council #7046 hosted a pancake breakfast in the Parish Hall of St. Cecilia’s Church in Monmouth Junction, NJ, in an effort to garner donations to help offset the medical costs incurred by the Monticchio Family and the sudden costs sustained by the MacCallum Family after the death of their husband and father Craig as a result of plane crash on May 31. The Council collected over $4,800.00 in donations from the friends, neighbors, local residents, and complete strangers who took part in the event. A number of members of Boy Scout Troop 10 were on hand to help out with the serving at the event. They were there in recognition of fellow Scout Tim Monticchio, an Eagle Scout, who in 2011 was named the New Jersey American Legion Scout of the Year for 2011. Tim was on the flight that crashed on the railroad tracks in Linden, NJ, shortly after takeoff. The pilot of the airplane, Craig MacCallum was an instructor with over 30 years’ flying experience. He was credited with maneuvering the plane away from a number of dangerous industrial sites around the area. “We are very pleased with the outcome of this event. Over 350 people took part by having a tasty meal and donating as they were able to help two families who were impacted by a sudden and tragic accident,” said Grand Knight Manny Vitone.
