ROCKAWAY FOOD CLOSET – Saint Cecilia’s continues to
support the ROCKAWAY FOOD CLOSET which is an ecu-
menical food pantry serving our community located at the First
Presbyterian Church, our neighbors across the street. Your do-
nation of food may be brought to Hayes Hall when you come to
church. Your generosity is a blessing to those who are unable to
adequately feed their families. May God bless you. VOTIVE CANDLES – The Saint Padre Pio votive candle
room has reopened after being closed since last March due to
the pandemic. You are once again able to enter and light a
candle for prayer. I ask that no more than 2 persons be in the
room at the same time so that we can maintain social distanc-
ing. Please do not sit in the votive candle room during Holy
Mass. – Father Zig

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE – Father Zig will serve as
the spiritual director for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land spon-
sored by 206 Tours, February 28 to March 9, 2022. There
are about 9 parishioners who have already registered for this
pilgrimage which will be made up of people from through-
out the United States. All information and registration must
be done through 206 Tours and not the parish office. Please
see the website at: www.pilgrimages.com/frpeplowski. This
10 day pilgrimage is entitled, “Explore the Holy Land From
Jerusalem” and is a Catholic tour with daily Mass and devo-
tions at the holy sites.
2022 LITURGICAL CALENDAR – Be sure to take a copy of
this year’s 2022 Liturgical Calendar for your home reference. I
am most grateful to Bob and Melissa Kanapaux (Kanapaux Fu-
neral Home in Rockaway) for once again providing the calen-

Two birthdays are being celebrated this week. Monday, De-
cember 27th is Deacon Angel Torres birthday and Saturday,
January 1st is Sister Marlene Weitzel’s birthday. We wish
both Deacon Angel and Sister Marlene a HAPPY BIRTH-
DAY filled with health, joy, peace and all the blessings
which come down from the Father of Lights!

YEAR END GIVING – As the end of the year approaches
many charitable organizations will send requests for a year
end donation. The benefit of these donations to the giver is,
in our case, the amount may be beneficial for income tax
reporting and having the joy of knowing that your gift is a
gift to the Lord. As you know, here at Saint Cecilia’s we
have a special Christmas Mass Offering which encourages
you to make a special end of the year donation to our parish
in honor of Our Lord’s Nativity. For some individuals the
best way to make a special donation may be to donate secu-
rities in lieu of cash. If you are in a position to contribute
securities, please contact the parish office for further infor-
mation to pass along to your broker to complete your dona-

Divine Mercy Academy in Rockaway is a Catholic elemen-
tary school offering a comprehensive Pre-K through 8th

Daily Life and the Scriptures group presents:
First Corinthians: The Church and the Christian
Community
The conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth are
in many ways similar to our struggles today as
Christians. They, too, witnessed division, scandal,
immorality, persecution and other trials. In First
Corinthians: The Church and the Christian Com-
munity, an eleven-part Bible study, learn how St.
Paul addressed these struggles by introducing the
Corinthians to God’s greatest gift–the Eucharist.
The Monday night “Daily Life and Scriptures” group
will begin the Bible study First Corinthians: The
Church and the Christian Community on Monday
January 10, 2022, at 7:30pm in Hayes Hall. Partici-
pants will meet for 11 weeks to view an engaging
video presentation followed by a time of lively group

WINTER POLICY - Now that we are in the midst of the
winter season please be aware of the following: In the event
of inclement weather and Divine Mercy Academy is closed,
the parish office will be closed and the church will be open
ONLY for the liturgical service scheduled. Also, all evening
events will be cancelled.
RCIA 2021-2022
(Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) RCIA is a program for adults that are interested in being
received into the Catholic Church via Baptism, Holy Com-
munion, or Confirmation. If you or someone you know has
for whatever reason never received one of these sacraments,
and would like to enter into the fullness of the Catholic
Church, please reach out! This is a small group that works
with each candidate to help prepare them for the reception of
the sacraments and the fullness of participation in the life of
the church. The program includes weekly classes on Sun-
day mornings from October through April. For more infor-

PADRE PIO PRAYER GROUP – The Saint Padre Pio
Prayer Group has resumed and will meet each month on the
first Wednesday of the month. The meetings will begin at 10
a.m. in the church with the praying of the Holy Rosary.
Meditation material is sent every month to us from the Inter-
national Padre Pio Prayer Center in San Giovanni Rotondo,
Italy. The monthly meditation material may be found in the
votive candle chapel (former baptistery) in our church. All
are welcome to attend. The next gathering is Wednesday,
January 5th
A GREAT NIGHT! – Join us for an outdoor night of Christ-
mas carols around a fire pit with hot chocolate and cookies too
on Tuesday, December 28th from 7 to 8 pm at the parish park-
ing lot (behind the rectory). A suggested donation of $5 per
family will benefit the Rockaway Food Pantry. What a great
way for us to come together as a family of faith to sing the
Lord’s praises and to enjoy one another’s company. I think the

My dear parishioners,
I know you were just in church yesterday but TODAY is Sunday, the Lord’s Day, which beckons us to return to the Lord’s
house to celebrate the Eucharist as we recall the weekly remembrance of Christ’s Holy Resurrection. On this Second Day of
Christmas the Church commemorates the Holy Family of Nazareth, the Household of Joseph, Mary and Jesus. In recalling the
Holy Family we are reminded of our own family and our call to holiness.
The Sacred Scriptures for this Sunday speak of our Father in Faith, ABRAHAM and his wife Sarah. This old couple’s longing
for a son would be fulfilled by the Lord, “for whom nothing is impossible.” From this couple would come innumerable de-
scendants, sharing in their belief in the One Lord God who made heaven and earth. This monotheistic family, born from them
is more numerous than the stars in the heavens or the gains of sand on the sea shore. This gigantic family is called to faith and
trust in the One God. This family is summoned to holiness by their love for God and by distinguishing themselves as brothers
and sisters. Unfortunately the history between Jews, Christians and Moslems has not been a stellar one but rather one of con-
flict. These three monotheistic religions claim Abraham and Sarah as their own and yet animosity exists between these family
members. Family division only leads to sorrow and pain. Mutual love and peace are the hallmarks of true family life.
In the Gospel we hear how the parents of the Christ Child “take Him to church” to perform the ritual which is required by
faith. They enter the Lord’s House and encounter the senior citizens Simeon and Anna who prophesy of the Lord’s coming
into the world. God’s Only Begotten Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, was sent to us as the expression of God’s love for us and He
revealed this “Good News” through His Suffering, Death and Resurrection.
In bringing the Child Jesus into the temple as prescribed by religious law, Joseph and Mary give us an example of parental
responsibility regarding the fulfillment of religious law. Parents of today must also take seriously their obligation to bring
their children up according to the laws of God. Failing to fulfill this obligation is failure to be a good parent!
Let us pray for all families today that our homes may be places of prayer, peace, love and service. May the Holy Family of
Nazareth be our inspiration and our model.

To the male children of two years and under that were killed in Bethlehem and its environs by order of King Herod, Sts. Irenaeus, Augustine, and other early Fathers give the title of Martyrs, and as such they have been commemorated from the lst century and honored in the liturgy of the Church. In the Western Church, the Mass of the Holy Innocents is celebrated like those of Advent and Lent, without festal chants.
These innocent victims gave testimony to the Messiah and Redeemer, not by words but by their blood. They triumphed over the world and won their crown without having experienced the evils of the world, the flesh, and the devil.
