People sometimes react to what they see as strict requirements for sponsors. Yet it is logical that one sponsoring someone into an organization be a fully initiated member of that organization (in this case, having received the Eucharist and been confirmed) and a fully participating member. Someone once noted that it seems harder to qualify to be a sponsor than a parent. A priest friend responded: “We don’t choose our parents, but we do choose sponsors.” Hopefully awareness of the requirements for baptismal sponsorship will encourage our young people to seek Confirmation and maintain their faith practice, so they can one day serve as sponsor for nieces and nephews and the children of friends. MISSION STATEMENT: As part of the living Body of Christ, Saint Cecilia parish on Bainbridge Island seeks to conform to the will of God through faith, works, teaching and stewardship of God’s creation as guided by the Holy Spirit, by the teachings of Christ, and the Grace of the Father. We celebrate this mission daily in prayer, liturgy, sacraments and life.

Dear Parishioners,

The Church calls for Catholic parents to have infant children baptized in the first weeks after birth. Meanwhile, pastors are asked to discern the likelihood that the child will be raised in the Catholic Faith. If there is some question, he may delay the baptism and work with parents to overcome issues of concern, such as: lack of regular participation in Mass, a marriage not recognized by the Church, and/or lack of participation of older children in faith formation classes.

The pastor also needs to make provisions for appropriate preparation of the child’s parents. Consequently parents are encouraged to contact the parish well before the birth of a child to allow time for appropriate preparation. At St. Cecilia, Terry Markuly in the Faith Formation office schedules the classes every several months, as needed. The Church states that there should be a sponsor, “insofar as possible” for the one baptized. The popular term godparent is often used. If there are two, one is male the other female. They are to help the child to live the Christian life. The Church specifies sponsorship requirements: The sponsor must be 16 and confirmed (written proof is required in the archdiocese of Seattle) and one who “leads a life of faith.” While the latter is not spelled out, most parishes require sponsors to affirm that they attend Mass regularly and if not single, are in a marriage recognized by the Church. A priest friend responded: “We don’t choose our parents, but we do choose sponsors.”

Hopefully awareness of the requirements for baptismal sponsorship will encourage our young people to seek Confirmation and maintain their faith practice, so they can one day serve as sponsor for nieces and nephews and the children of friends. Yours in Christ,

2015: This weekend

all 45 parish

ministries will be

offering information

about their activities

and service. This will

be a great opportunity to learn how to connect with

your parish family in a way that serves others, deepens

your faith, and is a good fit for you!

LIBRARY NEWS: Seeds of the Word by Fr. Robert

Barron. How do Superman, Gran Torino and The

Hobbit Illuminate the figure of Jesus? How does

Bob Dylan covey the prophetic overtones of

Jeremiah and Isaiah? Through a collection of

essays, Fr. Barron finds “seeds” in today’s most

popular films, books and current events.

Donations of gently used books always welcome.

APPEAL UPDATE: The Appeal is nearly over! But it’s

not too late to participate. If you have not yet made

your pledge, online donations can be made at

www.seattlearchdiocese.org/donate, or you can use

the Annual Catholic Appeal envelopes in the pews. If

you cannot make a financial commitment at this time,

Western Washington through the 2015 Annual

Catholic Appeal.

Angeles to hear this internationally acclaimed speaker

and author. Youth are encouraged. Tickets will be sold

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT

Island Volunteer Caregivers : "Ubi caritas est vera,

Deus ibi est … Where true charity is, there is God."

Over 160 volunteers (many from St. Cecilia’s) assist

their neighbors by providing services that help people

age in place safely and remain engaged in their

community. Volunteers do transportation for medical

appointments, social or recreational activities, grocery

shopping and errands, help with pet care, light

housekeeping or yard care, take people for walks or to

the museum, read to visually impaired persons;

provide companionship or respite care for family

caregivers

and more.

Longtime

volunteer, Ned Kiley, shares, “After my wife Ruth

passed away, I felt I had developed some skills as her

primary caregiver throughout her illness. I had taken

her to many medical appointments and had a good feel

for navigating medical facilities. I learned to

empathize with the physical and emotional effort it

takes to go to these appointments when one is not in

good health. When I heard about IVC through the

Ministry Fair, it sounded like the perfect place to put

these skills to use. IVC is a great way to practice the

corporal and spiritual works of mercy by visiting (and

actually assisting) the sick and comforting the afflicted

by your presence and empathy. I have met some

inspiring people showing great courage in the face of

great challenges.”

Noel Hanish says, “Volunteering for IVC has benefited

me as much as the people I help. I’ve been incredibly

blessed in my life and as a Catholic and a Christian I

feel called upon to do what I can for someone who is

struggling. And I meet some very interesting people!”

For more information, contact Rita or Robin at 842-

4441 or email to [email protected].
