The Solemnity of the Epiphany & the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

Twelve days after Christmas comes the Solemnity of the Epiphany, the great feast of the Manifestation

of Christ to the Gentiles. Though this festival traditionally falls on January 6, in the United States and

Canada it is currently transferred to the Sunday between January 2 and 8. As a part of the Latin Rite,

the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter follows this liturgical norm of the Latin Rite dioceses of North

America.

More ancient than the celebration of Christmas, the observance of the Epiphany began in the Eastern

portion of the Church in the third century AD as a theologically rich and comprehensive commemora-

tion of the mystery of God’s revelation of His Incarnate Son. The word “Epiphany” means manifesta-

tion, and in the West the feast came to center on Christ’s appearance to the star-led Magi. The time

between Epiphany and Septuagesima (the third Sunday before Lent) commemorates three manifesta-

tions of Our Lord: (1) to the Gentiles in the persons of the Wise Men; (2) to the Jews at his Baptism in

the Jordan; and (3) to his disciples at the marriage feast in Cana of Galilee.

On the Epiphany, it is an ancient tradition to announce the date of Easter and to mark all the holy days

that take their dates from the timing of the Paschal Triduum. This proclamation, formally announced

by the Deacon at Mass on the Epiphany, arose long before calendars were widely available, but today it

still serves to connect Christmas and Easter and to orient the faithful in the sanctification of time to-

ward the mystery of the Resurrection.

The blessing of homes is another very old and popular Epiphany custom. Using blessed chalk, many

households mark the lintel over their entrance door with the year and with the inscription CMB, the

initials of Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, the traditional names of the Magi. The inscription also

stands for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, which means “Christ, bless this home.” The popular form of

the inscription incorporates the year as follows:

20+C+M+B+19

The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord both concludes Christmastide and draws out the celebration of the

Epiphany. Anciently, the Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan was a principal focus of Christ’s Epipha-

ny (as it remains today for the Eastern churches). In Western Christendom, the observance of Our

Lord’s Baptism came to follow the commemoration of His appearance to the Magi. Already, so soon

after Christmas, we approach with the Baptism of Jesus the mysteries of Lent and Easter. As the litur-

gical scholar Pius Parsch puts it, “In the symbolism of His baptism, Christ displayed beforehand His

redemptive death and resurrection. Himself immaculate, He assumes the sins of the world, descends

into the purifying waters, and raises mankind to divine sonship.” Dr. Clint Brand

Prayer at the Creche Jesu, sweetest Child, born in Bethlehem of the Virgin Mary, wrapped in swaddling-clothes, laid in the manger, heralded by angels, visited by shepherds, have mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, Child Jesus, have mercy upon us.

V. We have seen his star in the East.

R. And are come with gifts to worship the Lord.

Lord Jesus, our Master, go with us whilst we travel to the heavenly country; that, following thy star, we may not wander in the dark-ness of this world’s light, whilst thou, who art our Way, and Truth, and Life, dost shine within us to our journey’s end; who with the Father and the Holy Ghost, livest and reignest God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Epistle: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Brethren, I assume that you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for you, how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; that is, how the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

The Psalm: Psalm 72 [Deus, judicium] Chant, Thomas Norris (1741-1790)

The Lesson: Isaiah 60:1-6 Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,

and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you. And nations shall walk by your light, and kings in the brightness of your rising.

Lift up your eyes round about, and see; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far, and your daughters shall be carried in the arms. Then you shall see and be radiant, your heart shall thrill and rejoice; because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel: St. Matthew 2:1-12 V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

V. + A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, Wise Men from the East came to Jerusa-lem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judæa; for so it is written by the prophet: ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.’” Then Herod summoned the Wise Men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; and he sent them to Beth-lehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and wor-ship him.” When they had heard the king they went their way; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own coun-try by another way. V. The Gospel of the Lord. R. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Last Gospel: St. John 1:1-14 V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. V. + The Beginning of the Holy Gospel according to Saint John. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his Name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. [Genuflect] And the Word was made flesh, [Rise] and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. R. Thanks be to God.

An Act of Spiritual Communion for those who cannot now receive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament

My Jesus, I believe that thou art truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love thee above all things, and I desire to receive thee into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace thee as if thou wert already there and unite myself wholly to thee. Never permit me to be separated from thee. Amen.

Communion Anthem: “In the Bleak Midwinter” Harold Darke (1888-1976) In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,

Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,

In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.

In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day, Breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay; Enough for Him, whom angels fall before,

The ox and ass and camel which adore.

What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.
